Erling Persson founded H&M in Västerås, Sweden, in 1947 as Hennes, a shop selling only women's clothing. It became Hennes & Mauritz in 1968 after buying the Stockholm hunting apparel retailer Mauritz Widforss, which added menswear. The company is listed in Stockholm, and it opened its first Indian store at Select Citywalk in New Delhi in 2015.
