Winter fashion 2026 for men

The runways went back to the classics: the overcoat, the suit, the sweater. This time they come looser, more textured and far more colourful. Here is what that means for your wardrobe, and how to make it work in an Indian winter.

Heritage, with a twist.

01

The classics are back

Heritage tailoring, Fair Isle knits, wool overcoats and leather bombers led the shows. Designers looked to the 1970s and '80s, not to streetwear.

02

Proportion is everything

Jackets are either long or cropped. Trousers go wide while tops sit closer. Slim fit still exists, but it is no longer the default.

03

Texture and colour return

Fuzzy mohair, corduroy and tweed, in brown, merlot and forest green, with a surprise accent: pink.

+44%market adoption of classic-fit suits
+28%interest in leather bombers vs last year
+12%pointed shoulders on jackets
+4%double-breasted jackets

The fit report

Looser, but on purpose.

After 15 years of slim everything, the pendulum has swung. But oversized no longer means shapeless. The 2026 rule: volume in one place, structure in another.

Long + wideA shin-length coat over wide trousers. The most dramatic shape of the season.
Cropped + wideA short, hip-length jacket over wide trousers. Easy to wear and very 2026.
The slim revivalNarrow, sharp tailoring is back as a choice. Prada and Saint Laurent both showed it.
Rule 1Long or short, nothing in between

Outerwear lives at the extremes: shin-length coats or cropped jackets. Mid-thigh is the "dead middle" this year. Own one of each if you can.

Rule 2Wide bottom, closer top

Wide trousers look best with a closer-fitting top. Balance the volume instead of doubling it.

Rule 3The waist is coming back

Belted coats, straight fits and higher-rise trousers give shape to the new volume.

The trouser leg-opening guide

Lay the trousers flat, measure straight across the hem and double it. That is your leg opening.

Under 6.5″Skinny · out
7.5″ to 9″Best for most men
9″ and upWide · needs the right shoes

Straight leg has replaced slim as the everyday default, and pleated trousers are the big tailoring comeback.

Make it work for your build

Pick a higher rise and a cropped jacket so your legs look longer, and keep colours tonal from top to bottom. Avoid long coats that swallow you; a knee-length one is your maximum.

02
The colour report

Brown is the new black.

The usual black, navy and grey winter uniform now comes with rich browns, berry reds and jewel tones, plus soft pastels and pink as the surprise.

The palette, in real clothes

The new neutrals

Chocolate brown#4A2E22

The anchor of the season. Use it wherever you would normally reach for black.

Muted clay#B07A5E

A soft, dusty earth tone that Pantone flagged for AW26. Lovely in knits and suede.

Burnt olive#6B6A2E

An earthy green that behaves like a neutral. Try it on cardigans, overshirts and cargos.

Cream and almond#EFE6D6

Lifts a dark outfit instantly. Think cream knits and ecru denim.

The rich darks

Merlot and cherry#6B1E2E

Berry reds are the easy step up from brown. Start with a knit or a scarf.

Forest green#2F4A35

Gets noticed without the risk of a bright. Best in corduroy or wool.

Deep navy#1F2A44

As easy as black, but warmer on the eye.

Black#141414

Still useful. Pair it with one rich colour so it doesn't look flat.

The accents

Dusty pink#E3A1B0

The curveball. Big houses showed pink coats and knits this season.

Electric blue#2747C9

A jewel-toned pop. One piece is enough.

Ice blue#A8C4D8

A gentle winter pastel for shirts and fine knits.

True red#B3261E

Best in small doses: a beanie, socks or one statement knit.

Build your winter palette

Use the 60-30-10 rule: 60% neutral, 30% rich dark, 10% accent. Tap a colour in each row to see the outfit change.

60% neutral · coat and trousers
30% rich dark · the knit
10% accent · scarf and beanie

Three combinations that always work

Brown coat · cream knit · navy trousers

Merlot knit · grey trousers · black boots

Forest cord · clay overshirt · cream tee

India tip

Indian labels already treat ochre, wine and indigo as staples, so this palette is easy to find locally. Merlot, olive and dusty pink also flatter warm, wheatish and dusky skin tones better than icy greys do.

03
Outerwear I · the statement piece

The long wool overcoat.

Go big or go home: shin-length topcoats in textured wool that make anything underneath look intentional.

A man in a shin-length camel herringbone overcoat over a grey hoodie with wide trousers and loafers
The look

Why it's trending

Heritage tailoring led the runways. Louis Vuitton built its collection on houndstooth, herringbone and check, and the classic overcoat is one of the most searched pieces of the season.

Fit check

  • Length at or below the knee. Mid-thigh looks dated this year.
  • Raglan sleeves give an easy, relaxed shoulder.
  • Size it for a knit underneath, not just a shirt.
  • Sleeves end just past the wrist bone.

Wear it with

A roll-neck, wide wool trousers and loafers or leather boots. For the 2026 twist, wear it over a hoodie.

Colours to pick

CamelChocolateCharcoalHerringbone
Also rising: the utility trench. Trench coats came back in seasonal colours, often with fur details. Choose one if you want the length without the weight of wool.
India tip

A full wool overcoat earns its place in Delhi NCR, Punjab, the hills and on winter trips abroad. In milder cities like Kolkata, Jamshedpur or Mumbai, pick an unlined wool-blend topcoat or a long shacket instead: the same silhouette with half the heat.

04
Outerwear II · the cropped camp

Leather bomber & shearling aviator.

The other extreme: short, cropped jackets. The leather bomber is the most wearable trend jacket of the year.

A man in a cropped dark brown leather bomber with a cream shearling collar, a crew-neck knit and boots
The look

Why it's trending

Leather bombers, utility trenches and puffers returned on runways such as Acne Studios, often with fur trims. Cropped jackets ran through the whole season.

+28%leather bomber interest vs last year (Trendalytics)

Fit check

  • The hem hits at the belt or high hip, finished with a rib or strap.
  • The shoulder seam sits right on your shoulder bone.
  • Boxy through the body, but no wider than your shoulders.
  • Pair it with straight or wide trousers for the long-short balance.

Wear it with

A hoodie or crew-neck knit, wide trousers and boots. Or dress it up over an Oxford shirt and pleated trousers.

Colours to pick

Dark brownBlackTanCream shearling
The puffer is back too. Puffers returned with fur-trimmed hoods. A cropped, matte puffer fits the short-jacket trend and looks more grown-up than a glossy one.
India tip

Comfortable from roughly 10 to 18°C, which covers most Indian winters. Faux-leather and faux-shearling versions are everywhere: check the stitching, lining and collar pile before you buy, because cheap PU peels within a season.

05
Knitwear · the hero category

Knit happens.

Knitwear had a landmark season. Brunello Cucinelli, Polo Ralph Lauren and Paul Smith made it the centrepiece of the outfit, not just a layer.

A man in a fuzzy Fair Isle sweater in cream, brown and forest green with tailored trousers
The look

Patterned knits

Fair Isle, argyle and alpine motifs. Paul Smith reworked archive Fair Isle in alpaca.

How to wear it: Make it your only pattern. Plain trousers, a plain coat, and let the knit do the talking.

The fuzzy sweater

Shaggy mohair blends, alpaca and teddy-bear textures. The fluffier the better.

How to wear it: Choose forest, merlot or cream, and wear it with tailored trousers for a high-low look.

Crew-neck cardigan

Buttoned right up to the neck for an off-beat look. Padded cardigans even appeared as outerwear.

How to wear it: Open over a tee, or buttoned like a sweater under a cropped jacket.

Know your yarn

Merino

Light and warm. The best choice for most Indian winters.

Lambswool

Classic texture with real warmth.

Mohair / alpaca

The fuzzy look. Hand-wash only.

Cashmere

The investment buy. Softest of all.

Acrylic blend

Budget-friendly, but pills quickly.

  • The hem sits at the hip. Longer reads sloppy, not relaxed.
  • A slightly boxy body is on trend.
  • Sleeves can stack a little at the wrist. That's fine.
06
Layering · sport meets prep

Messy prep.

Preppy got sportier: blazers over hoodies, polos tucked into jeans, Oxford shirts under track tops. "Sports prep" tops Trendalytics' list of FW26 runway trends.

A man in a navy blazer over a grey hoodie with dark jeans and white sneakers
The look

Blazer + hoodie

The signature messy-prep move: formal tailoring over a sporty base layer.

How to wear it: A thin grey or cream hoodie under a navy or brown blazer, with jeans or wide trousers and clean sneakers.

The rugby shirt

Ralph Lauren paired rugby shirts with baggy trousers: part ski lodge, part off-duty student.

How to wear it: Bold stripes with plain wide chinos, under a cropped jacket or a long coat.

Oxford & flannel shirts

Heavyweight cotton gives the button-down real texture. It is the fashion crowd's shirt of choice.

How to wear it: Under a chunky knit with the collar out, or under a track top for the sport-prep mix.

The three-layer formula

  • Mix one formal piece with one sporty piece. That tension is the whole trend.
  • Vary textures: a smooth Oxford, a fuzzy knit, leather or wool on top.
  • Make each layer a little longer or shorter than the one beneath it.
  • Statement collars and cuffs are trending, so let the shirt collar show.
OuterBlazer · bomber · overcoat · shacket

BaseTee · Oxford · polo · roll-neck
India tip

Layering is the smartest strategy for Indian cities, where mornings are cold and afternoons are warm. Take the blazer off at noon and the hoodie-and-Oxford base still looks complete.

07
Tailoring · backtrack to the classics

The suit is back.

Menswear is reclaiming the elegance it lost to streetwear: classic-fit suits, double-breasted jackets and pointed shoulders, with a relaxed, wide-lapel 1970s mood.

A man in a brown double-breasted suit with wide lapels at an evening wedding reception
The look

Why it's trending

Classic-fit suiting dominated, with double-breasted cuts and pointed shoulders as the key details. Louis Vuitton revisited '80s suiting, and Dolce & Gabbana brought back velvet blazers and pinstripes.

+44%market adoption of classic-fit suits (Trendalytics)

Fit check

  • The jacket covers your seat. Very short jackets are out.
  • A structured shoulder with a slight point, but no boxy padding.
  • Trousers are straight or pleated, with a gentle break on the shoe.
  • Keep a double-breasted jacket buttoned when you stand.

Wear it with

A fine roll-neck instead of a shirt for evenings, or a crisp white Oxford for the day. Fabrics to look for: Prince of Wales check, pinstripe, tweed, herringbone, and velvet for evenings.

Colours to pick

NavyBrownCharcoalBottle green velvet
India tip

Wedding season is suit season. A navy or brown double-breasted suit in a wool blend covers sangeets and receptions, and the jacket works alone with jeans. A velvet blazer over a kurta is a strong fusion move for the festive calendar.

08
Bottoms · the silhouette shift

Go wide, not sloppy.

The slim-trouser era is over. Think relaxed shapes with real drape. Wide-leg trousers have officially gone mainstream.

A man in wide-leg pleated grey wool trousers with a tucked-in merlot roll-neck and loafers
The look

Wide pleated wool

Pleats are back, with a higher rise and soft wool or flannel.

How to wear it: A roll-neck or tucked-in knit, plus loafers or boots.

Raw & straight denim

Winter is the best time to break in raw denim, which moulds and fades to your body.

How to wear it: Sturdy boots and a wool coat for a workwear look.

Corduroy

Textured and warm. Thick ribs read bold; fine ribs read subtle.

How to wear it: A cream knit and a brown suede jacket, all in one colour family.

Wide-leg rules

  • Hem: it should just brush the top of the shoe. No puddling on the floor.
  • Rise: mid to high, so the volume starts at the waist, not the hips.
  • Top: closer-fitting or cropped, like a tucked knit or a short jacket.
  • Shoes: wide hems need some weight: boots, loafers or chunkier sneakers.
Not sure? Go straight.

Straight leg flatters almost everyone and has replaced slim as the default. Aim for a 7.5″ to 9″ leg opening: modern without trying too hard.

Skip

Super-skinny jeans (under 6.5″) and extreme balloon cuts, unless you love styling them.

09
Footwear & accessories

From the ground up.

Two shoe stories pull in opposite directions: rugged leather boots and sleek, slim sneakers. Up top, the scarf comes out from under the coat to become the hero.

Brown leather hiking boots with raw denim turn-ups and a plaid wool scarf
The look

Leather hiking boots

Old-school rather than technical: rich weatherproof leather, grippy lug soles and metal hooks.

How to wear it: With raw denim and a coat, or against tailoring for contrast.

Slim sneakers

After years of chunky "dad" trainers, low-profile minimal sneakers are back.

How to wear it: Use them to ground bulky winter layers, with wide trousers or raw denim.

The hero scarf

This season the scarf moves out from under the coat and becomes the main event.

How to wear it: Oversized, draped over the coat or loosely knotted. Fair Isle or plaid.

Small accessories that update everything

  • A brooch to brighten a one-colour suit.
  • Metal-frame sunglasses, worn year-round.
  • A beanie in an accent colour like merlot, pink or forest.
  • Brown leather gloves that match your boots.
The "eclectic grandpa" kit

Nostalgia plus comfort: argyle knits, big checked coats and loafers, mixed with baseball caps, bold-framed glasses and sneakers. Ivy League prep meets streetwear, with a little workwear.

India tip

Brown leather boots and white slim sneakers cover almost every Indian winter outfit. A plaid or Fair Isle scarf is the cheapest way to look current: it updates last year's jacket instantly.

The Indian winter edit · runway to real life

What works where you live.

Quick answers

Winter 2026 FAQ.

What are the biggest men's winter fashion trends for 2026?

The big stories are long wool overcoats, cropped leather bombers, patterned and fuzzy knitwear, "messy prep" layering (blazers over hoodies), the return of classic-fit and double-breasted suits, wide-leg trousers, rugged leather boots, slim sneakers and the oversized scarf.

Are slim-fit trousers out of style in 2026?

Skinny trousers are out, but slim is not dead. Straight leg is the new everyday default, wide-leg trousers have gone mainstream, and sharp slim tailoring is back as a deliberate choice. For most men, a leg opening of 7.5 to 9 inches is the sweet spot.

What colours should men wear in winter 2026?

Chocolate brown is the new black. Pair it with clay, olive and cream as neutrals, merlot, forest green and navy as rich darks, and a small accent of dusty pink, electric blue or red. Follow the 60-30-10 rule: 60% neutral, 30% rich dark, 10% accent.

How do I dress for winter in a mild city like Mumbai or Bengaluru?

Skip the heavy coats. Wear an unlined blazer, a fine-knit polo or a cardigan over a tee, with wide cotton or wool-blend trousers. Add colour through a scarf or knit, and save leather jackets for cool evenings.

Is a leather bomber worth buying for Indian winters?

Yes. It is the most wearable trend jacket for India, comfortable from roughly 10 to 18°C. Faux leather is fine if the stitching, lining and finish are good. Avoid cheap PU, which tends to peel within a season.

What is "messy prep" or sports prep?

It is preppy dressing made sporty: a blazer over a hoodie, a polo tucked into jeans, or an Oxford shirt under a track top. The trick is mixing one formal piece with one sporty piece.

How should wide-leg trousers fit?

Choose a mid to high rise so the volume starts at the waist. The hem should just brush the top of your shoe without pooling, the top half should be closer-fitting, and the shoes should have some weight, like boots, loafers or chunkier sneakers.
