Winter fashion 2026 for women

This winter is about drama you can actually wear: funnel-neck coats and capes, plush faux fur, big-shouldered knits and the skirt suit, all in deep brown, burgundy and purple. Here is what matters, and how to make it work in an Indian winter.

The season in 60 seconds

Drama, made wearable.

01

Outerwear is the outfit

Funnel necks, capes, military jackets and plush fur led the shows. The coat is no longer something you take off at the door; it is the look.

02

Shape comes back

Big shoulders on knits and jackets, belted waists, the skirt suit and balloon trousers. Volume, but always balanced by structure somewhere else.

03

Rich colour and texture

Deep brown is the new base, with burgundy and purple for depth. Fabrics are tactile: faux fur, bouclé, velvet, silk and lace.

The shape report

Big shoulders, defined waist.

The shapeless oversized look is fading. This winter's silhouettes are bold but built: strong shoulders, a waist you can see, and volume placed in one spot at a time.

Cape + slimA sweeping cape coat over slim trousers and pointed boots. The runway's favourite outline.
Cropped + balloonA short, plush jacket over full balloon trousers. Fun, warm and very 2026.
The skirt suitA short, structured jacket with a midi skirt. Chanel, Jil Sander and Tom Ford all showed it.
Rule 1Shoulders are back

Tory Burch and Carolina Herrera showed knits with broad, puffy shoulders. A strong shoulder makes the waist look smaller and any outfit look sharper.

Rule 2Find the waist

Belts over coats, belted jackets and skirt suits. Belted jackets were one of the big street-style risers of the season.

Rule 3Volume in one place

A cape with slim trousers, or a fitted knit with balloon trousers. Never big on top and bottom at once.

The coat-length guide

Stand straight in your shoes and check where the hem lands. That decides what you wear underneath.

Mid-thighThe least current length
Calf to ankleThe statement · slim below
CroppedAt the waist · wide below

Long coats look best over slim trousers, midi skirts or a sweater dress. Cropped jackets want wide or balloon trousers.

Make it work for your body

Cropped jackets, a belted waist and one colour from top to bottom make you look taller. If you want a long coat, choose a slim one that ends at mid-calf, not the ankle, and skip heavy capes.

02
The colour report

Brown, burgundy and a hint of purple.

Deep brown has become the season's neutral, burgundy and regal purple add richness, and a few soft brights like teal and butter yellow keep it from feeling heavy.

The palette, in real clothes

The grounded neutrals

Deep brown#4A2E22

The base of the season, with searches up 50% on last year. Wear it where you would normally wear black.

Camel#C19A6B

The classic coat colour. Softer than black against Indian skin tones.

Muted clay#B07A5E

A dusty earth tone that Pantone flagged for AW26. Lovely in knits and suede.

Cream#EFE6D6

Lifts a dark outfit instantly. Think cream knits, trousers and stoles.

The rich darks

Burgundy#6B1E2E

Searches up 46%. The easiest "statement" colour: try a knit, a bag or velvet trousers.

Regal purple#5B2A5E

The surprise of the season, with searches up 60%. Plum and aubergine are the wearable shades.

Forest green#2F4A35

Gets noticed without the risk of a bright. Beautiful in velvet and wool.

Black#141414

Still useful. Pair it with one rich colour so it doesn't look flat.

The accents

Electric teal#0F7C80

The pop colour fashion insiders picked up. One piece is enough.

Butter yellow#F2D98B

A soft bright that showed up against the deep tones. Great near the face.

Ice blue#A8C4D8

A gentle winter pastel for knits and silk shirts.

Silver#BFC3C9

For evenings: a metallic bag, shoe or knit thread.

Build your winter palette

Use the 60-30-10 rule: 60% neutral, 30% rich dark, 10% accent. Tap a colour in each row to see the outfit change.

60% neutral · coat and trousers
30% rich dark · the knit
10% accent · scarf and beret

Three combinations that always work

Brown coat · cream knit · burgundy bag

Purple knit · camel trousers · brown boots

Forest velvet · cream silk · teal scarf

India tip

This palette is already at home in Indian wardrobes: wine, maroon, bottle green and rust are wedding-season staples. Deep brown, burgundy and plum also flatter warm, wheatish and dusky skin tones better than icy greys do.

03
Outerwear I · the statement coat

Funnel necks & capes.

The two coat stories of the season: a high, stand-up funnel collar that frames the face, and the cape, which swaps sleeves for a sweep of fabric.

A woman in a camel wool cape coat with a high funnel neck, slim black trousers and pointed boots
The look

Why it's trending

Funnel necks ran through the runways, from Balenciaga to Altuzarra, and capes appeared at Givenchy, Khaite, Altuzarra and Balenciaga. On the street, searches for funnel-neck jackets jumped.

+875%searches for funnel-neck jackets vs last year (Trendalytics)

Fit check

  • The collar stands on its own and sits close to the jaw, not flopping over.
  • Capes end at the hip or the knee. Longer needs a tall frame.
  • With a cape, keep everything underneath slim.
  • Size a funnel-neck coat for a knit underneath, not just a shirt.

Wear it with

Slim trousers or a midi skirt, a fine knit and pointed boots. A wide belt over a cape gives it a waist.

Colours to pick

CamelDeep brownBlackBurgundy
Also rising: the military jacket. Khaite and Ann Demeulemeester showed sharp military jackets. Belted, structured jackets were one of the big street-style risers too.
India tip

A full wool coat earns its place in Delhi NCR, Punjab, the hills and on winter trips abroad. In milder cities, a funnel-neck jacket in a wool blend or a light cape over a kurta gives the same look with half the heat.

04
Outerwear II · plush and cosy

Faux fur, cropped or maxi.

The most talked-about texture of the season. Plush coats came in two lengths: short and boxy, or all the way to the ankle. We recommend faux, which looks just as good.

The look

Why it's trending

Statement fur looks came from Gucci, Chanel, Schiaparelli and Valentino. Trendalytics says fur dominated street style, with fur trim a top mover on jackets, gloves and shoes, and structured faux fur up 22% in market adoption.

+29%market adoption of plush fur coats (Trendalytics)

Fit check

  • Cropped jackets end at the waist or high hip.
  • The shoulder seam sits on your shoulder; plush adds width on its own.
  • Choose a dense, soft pile that springs back when you brush it.
  • Balance the bulk with slim or straight trousers.

Wear it with

A fine knit, straight jeans and tall boots for the day. Over a slip dress or a velvet suit for a wedding evening.

Colours to pick

ChocolateCreamCamelBlack
Fur-look textures count too. Shaggy mohair, bouclé (up 18% in market adoption) and teddy fabrics give the same cosy look in a lighter, easier package.
India tip

Faux fur is warm, so save the full coat for the north and hill stations. Elsewhere, a fur collar, fur-trimmed gloves or a fuzzy cropped jacket for evenings is enough. Check the lining and the seams: cheap pile sheds within a season.

05
Knitwear · the cosy hero

Knits with attitude.

Knitwear grew up this season: sculpted shoulders, preppy argyle and the long, easy sweater dress that works as a full outfit.

A woman in a long burgundy sweater dress with broad shoulders, an argyle scarf and knee-high brown boots
The look

Big-shoulder knits

Tory Burch showed boxy knits with defined shoulders; Carolina Herrera went for balloon shapes.

How to wear it: Tuck it into a high-waisted skirt or trousers so the shoulders do the talking.

Argyle

Zankov layered argyle on argyle, and Khaite paired chunky argyle with opera gloves. Argyle rose 24% among key influencers.

How to wear it: One argyle piece with plain everything else, or a sweater over a collared shirt.

The sweater dress

Proenza Schouler showed long, slouchy knit dresses; Isabel Marant went mini.

How to wear it: Midi length with knee-high boots, or a mini with thick tights and a long coat.

Know your yarn

Merino

Light and warm. The best choice for most Indian winters.

Lambswool

Classic texture with real warmth.

Mohair / alpaca

The fuzzy look. Hand-wash only.

Cashmere

The investment buy. Softest of all.

Acrylic blend

Budget-friendly, but pills quickly.

  • A sweater dress should skim the body, not cling. Size up if it pulls across the hips.
  • Broad-shoulder knits look best tucked into high-waisted trousers or skirts.
  • Wear thick tights or boots with a knit dress so it reads winter, not lounge.
06
Prints · checks and florals

Tartan, roses and stripes.

Prints came back with confidence: heritage checks, oversized flowers pinned to coats and dresses, and bold animal stripes.

A woman in a red and green tartan wool coat over a black roll-neck and a pleated midi skirt
The look

Tartan & checks

Plaid, tartan and checkerboard at Chloé, Acne Studios and Burberry. Classic tartan rose 40% year on year.

How to wear it: A tartan coat or skirt with black or cream basics, nothing else patterned.

Rosettes & florals

Khaite, Simone Rocha, Dior and Chanel pinned big rosettes and floral appliqués onto clothes. Artistic florals were the season's biggest print riser.

How to wear it: A rosette brooch on a coat lapel or a black dress. One is enough.

Animal stripes

Zebra and tiger stripes rose 49% among key influencers.

How to wear it: As an accent: a bag, a belt, a scarf or a pair of flats.

The one-print rule

  • Let one print lead. Pick the rest of the outfit from the colours in it.
  • Tartan works best on big, simple shapes: a coat, a cape, a pleated skirt.
  • Florals this season are oversized: one big rosette or appliqué beats a busy print.
  • Animal stripes look newest in one small dose, like a bag, shoe or scarf.
The "dark romance" mood

Saint Laurent, Ann Demeulemeester and McQueen leaned gothic and romantic: black lace, velvet, deep burgundy and ruffles. Try one piece, like a lace blouse under a tailored jacket.

India tip

Checks are easy to find locally and cheap to try. A tartan shawl or stole over a plain coat or kurta is the quickest way to wear the trend, and it doubles as a warm layer.

07
Tailoring · the new suit

The skirt suit is back.

The trouser suit had its decade. This winter the skirt suit returns: a short, structured jacket with a pencil or midi skirt, often in tweed or bouclé.

A woman in a fitted deep brown tweed skirt suit with a short jacket and a midi pencil skirt
The look

Why it's trending

Coveteur named the skirt suit "the new suit", with versions at Chanel, Jil Sander, Ferragamo and Tom Ford. Jil Sander and Alaïa also showed shrunken lapels, and slim, structured tailoring returned across the season.

Fit check

  • The jacket ends at the waist or high hip and fits close.
  • Small, neat lapels look newer than wide ones this year.
  • Skirts sit at the waist and end at the knee or mid-calf.
  • Wear it as a set, or split it: the jacket with jeans, the skirt with a knit.

Wear it with

A fine roll-neck or silk blouse, sheer tights and pointed heels or knee boots. Fabrics to look for: tweed, bouclé, wool flannel, and velvet for evenings.

Colours to pick

Deep brownCream boucléBurgundyBlack
India tip

A skirt suit or co-ord set in a wool blend works for the office all winter. For weddings, a velvet jacket over a silk saree or a kurta set is a strong fusion move, and the jacket earns its keep long after the season.

08
Trousers & fabrics · touch and drape

Balloon, velvet and silk.

The texture story reaches the lower half too: full balloon trousers, sleek velvet and shimmering silk that layers under winter knits.

A woman, seen from behind, in wide plum velvet trousers, a tucked-in cream knit and pointed heels
The look

Balloon trousers

Full through the leg and gathered at the ankle, they were one of the most talked-about street-style shapes.

How to wear it: A tucked fine knit or a cropped jacket on top, plus pointed shoes.

Velvet

Velvet returns in a smoother, sleeker finish than old crushed velvet, in burgundy, forest green and mustard tones.

How to wear it: Velvet trousers with a cream knit, or a velvet blazer over a silk top for evenings.

Silk & lace

Shimmering silk rose 26% year on year, and sheer lace climbed among key influencers.

How to wear it: A silk shirt or lace top under a chunky knit or a tailored jacket.

Balloon and wide-leg rules

  • Rise: high, so the volume starts at the waist.
  • Top: fitted or tucked in, like a fine knit or a cropped jacket.
  • Hem: balloon trousers gather at the ankle; wide legs just brush the shoe.
  • Shoes: pointed heels or boots keep the shape sharp.
Not sure? Go straight.

Straight-leg trousers and jeans flatter almost everyone and pair with every coat in this guide.

Skip

Super-skinny jeans and very low rises. They fight with this season's longer, fuller coats.

09
Footwear & accessories

From the ground up.

Riding boots and sharp pointed toes are the two shoe stories, and the neck scarf is back as the finishing touch.

Brown leather knee-high riding boots and black pointed heels with a silk scarf and a small bowler bag
The look

Riding boots

Tall equestrian boots were a street-style favourite, with interest up 115% on last year.

How to wear it: Over slim jeans, under a midi skirt, or with a sweater dress.

Pointed toes

Pointed-toe heels rose 73% in market adoption. Flats with a point count too.

How to wear it: With balloon trousers, a skirt suit or straight jeans to sharpen the outline.

The triangle scarf

Folded into a triangle and knotted at the neck or over the hair, it rose 149% on last year.

How to wear it: Silk in a print over a plain coat, or wool tied under the chin.

Small accessories that update everything

  • A bowler bag: structured, rounded and up 109% in market adoption.
  • Leather gloves, plain or with a fur trim.
  • A hat with presence: a beret, a fur-look hat or a neat pillbox.
  • An open tote, carried by Chanel, Loewe, Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton.
The equestrian kit

Tall riding boots, a belted jacket, a triangle scarf and leather gloves. It is the easiest way to look polished this winter, and every piece lasts for years.

India tip

Knee-high brown boots and pointed-toe flats or heels cover almost every Indian winter outfit, from jeans to a skirt suit to a kurta. A silk triangle scarf is the cheapest way to look current.

The Indian winter edit · runway to real life

What works where you live.

Most of this season's runway was built for European cold. Here is how to translate it to an Indian winter, including with the kurtas, sarees and shawls already in your wardrobe.

A smiling young woman in a forest-green cardigan over a white kurta with a light wool stole by the sea in Mumbai at sunset
Mild-city winter

Delhi NCR, Punjab, Lucknow, Jaipur, hill stations

Lean into

A long wool or funnel-neck coat, a faux fur jacket, sweater dresses with tights and tall boots, velvet suits for weddings, a pashmina over everything.

Go easy on

Very little. This is your season to go full runway.

Shawl over the coat

Drape a pashmina or wool stole over a plain coat instead of a scarf. It is warmer and very current next to the cape trend.

Knit over the saree

A fitted fine-knit or a cropped cardigan over a saree, belted at the waist, is the smartest office-to-dinner winter move.

Cape over the kurta

A short wool cape or poncho over a straight kurta and trousers gives the runway outline with Indian ease.

Quick answers

Winter 2026 FAQ.

What are the biggest women's winter fashion trends for 2026?

The big stories are funnel-neck coats and capes, plush faux fur, big-shoulder knits, argyle and sweater dresses, tartan and oversized florals, the skirt suit, balloon trousers, velvet, tall riding boots, pointed toes and the triangle scarf.

What colours are in for winter 2026?

Deep brown is the new neutral, with camel, clay and cream alongside. Burgundy, regal purple and forest green add richness, and small accents of electric teal, butter yellow, ice blue or silver keep it fresh. Try the 60-30-10 rule: 60% neutral, 30% rich dark, 10% accent.

Is faux fur in style for winter 2026?

Yes. Plush coats and fur trims were among the biggest stories of the season, in cropped and maxi lengths. Faux fur gives the same look; choose a dense pile, a proper lining and neat seams so it does not shed.

How do I wear winter trends with Indian clothes?

Drape a pashmina or wool stole over a plain coat, wear a fitted knit or cropped cardigan over a saree, or put a short cape over a straight kurta. Velvet blazers over silk sarees or kurta sets work beautifully for weddings.

What should I wear in winter in a mild city like Mumbai or Bengaluru?

Skip faux fur and heavy wool. Wear fine knits, silk shirts, a light stole and cotton-silk co-ords, and bring in the season through colour, velvet for evenings and pointed flats.

Are skirt suits in fashion in 2026?

Yes. The skirt suit was one of the main tailoring stories, with a short, structured jacket and a pencil or midi skirt, often in tweed or bouclé. Wear it as a set or split the pieces.

Which boots should I buy for winter 2026?

Tall riding boots in brown leather are the most useful buy: they go with jeans, midi skirts, sweater dresses and kurtas. Pointed-toe heels or flats are the second shoe to own.
