Bobbi Brown Brand Audit: Estée Lauder Owner, India vs US Prices

Bobbi Brown has been owned by Estée Lauder since 1995 and is imported to India by ELCA Cosmetics. Indian prices against the US, and what its listings publish.
Bobbi Brown brand audit by FashionAudit: Bobbi Brown logo and the headline “Estée Lauder Owner, India vs US Prices” over foundation bottles

Bobbi Brown, the makeup brand, has been owned by The Estée Lauder Companies since 1995. Its founder left in 2016 and now runs a separate brand, Jones Road Beauty, whose About page says she is “no longer affiliated or associated with the Bobbi Brown Cosmetics company”.

This audit reads the ownership of the name, the Indian shelf price against the American one, and what the brand publishes behind its numbers.

The short answer

The Estée Lauder Companies has owned Bobbi Brown since 1995, and the founder has had no role in the brand since December 2016. The BOBBI BROWN trademarks are registered to Bobbi Brown Professional Cosmetics, Inc., which Estée Lauder’s annual filing lists as a subsidiary, and the Indian listings read name ELCA Cosmetics Private Limited, New Delhi, as importer. On the four best-known products, checked 2 September 2026, Indian prices ran from 28% below American list to 12% above — and cheaper than America on all four before tax.

How it started

Bobbi Brown was a working makeup artist when she launched ten brown-based lipsticks in New York in 1991, under the name Bobbi Brown Essentials, at Bergdorf Goodman. The brand’s own About page still tells that part: “It began with 10 lipsticks”, under the banner “EFFORTLESS BEAUTY SINCE 1991”.

The Estée Lauder Companies bought the company in 1995 — for a reported $74.5 million, according to Inc. — and kept her on as its creative head. She stayed 21 more years. Her departure was announced on 20 December 2016, in her own words a decision that the brand’s 25th anniversary “made me realize it was time to start a new chapter”.

She launched Jones Road Beauty on 26 October 2020.

  2. The Estée Lauder CompaniesBuys the company in 1995; she stays until December 2016
  3. Bobbi Brown Professional Cosmetics, Inc.Delaware. The BOBBI BROWN trademarks are filed in this company’s name
  4. An Estée Lauder subsidiaryNamed as one in the group’s annual filing of 19 August 2026

The name went with the business. The founder told Inc. in September 2024: “I sold the name Bobbi Brown to Estee Lauder.”

The brand’s About page tells the 1991 founding story, and Jones Road’s About page carries the disclaimer quoted above.

What they actually make

Makeup, weighted to complexion: the Vitamin Enriched Face Base primer, Weightless Skin Foundation, the Skin Foundation Stick, Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, Luxe Lipstick and the Crushed lip range. On the brand’s American site the Weightless Skin Foundation runs to 53 shades and the foundation stick to 42. The Indian assortment is a subset — Tira lists 312 items, Sephora India 194 and Nykaa Luxe 73, three different selections read on the same day.

None of it is made here. On twelve Sephora India product pages read on 2 September 2026, all twelve named ELCA Cosmetics Private Limited, Tolstoy House, New Delhi as the importer — the same address as the company’s own registry filing. An Indian tax tribunal described that company’s business in its order of 11 August 2026: it “purchases various branded products from its AEs such as MAC, Clinique, Bobbi Brown etc. in bulk (as a wholesaler)”. It is an importer and a wholesaler, not a factory. Readers who have followed the same brand-versus-manufacturer split in footwear will know the shape from our Bata audit.

The declared country of origin varies. Eight of the twelve declared the United States, two declared Canada, one Belgium and one answered with a menu of thirteen countries joined by slashes. Of the foundations read, the Weightless Skin Foundation declared Canada and the Mini Skin Long-Wear foundation Belgium.

Worth knowing

Two of twelve listings carried an importer line that differed from the registered address — one with a different Delhi PIN code, one giving a New York address. Trust the declaration printed on the box in your hand over the one typed into a listing.

What Bobbi Brown costs in India

Four hero products, priced on 2 September 2026: Indian maximum retail prices from Sephora India and Nykaa Luxe against the brand’s own American list prices, converted at ₹95.38 to the dollar, the Federal Reserve rate for 28 August 2026. The American site was running a sitewide discount that day; the list prices are used.

ProductIndia MRPAgainst US list
Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, 3 g₹2,55028% cheaper
Crushed Lip Color, 3.4 g₹2,85015% cheaper
Skin Foundation Stick, 9 g₹5,9009% dearer
Vitamin Enriched Face Base, 50 ml₹7,50012% dearer

Strip out 18% GST and the picture changes completely: before tax, all four are cheaper here than on an American shelf, by 5% to 39%. That happens despite roughly 20% basic customs duty on imported makeup per tariff databases, plus a 10% social welfare surcharge on the duty and 18% IGST — around 44% of the assessed import value, of which the IGST part is creditable. Duty is charged on the value declared at the border, not on the American retail price.

The sharpest single number is the 24-Hour Waterproof Kajal Liner: 1.2 g for ₹1,200 here against $28, or ₹2,671, in America. That is 55% less, as read on 2 September 2026.

The 7 ml Vitamin Enriched Face Base costs ₹200 a millilitre against ₹150 for the 50 ml jar, a 33% penalty for the small pot. Only the Crushed Lip Colour mini runs the other way, at ₹756 a gram against ₹838 for the full size. Reading the unit price rather than the sticker is the same discipline our Campus audit applies to footwear.

Who Bobbi Brown is actually for

Across the eleven full-size products readable on Indian shelves the median price is ₹4,200, and six of the eleven sit at or above ₹4,000. That puts the core line in the luxury band on our makeup scale, above Clinique and well above the mass counter.

It suits a buyer who wants a wide complexion range and will pay counter prices for a foundation with a stated shade depth. It suits someone who cares about where a product is made and is willing to check, because these listings do carry the declaration.

It does not suit a buyer looking for products the founder works on today. Anyone hunting a marketplace discount should note that the brand’s Indian site now refers shoppers to third-party sellers it says it does not operate or control, so compare their prices against MRP, as our Liberty audit does in footwear.

Reputation and controversies

The owner’s own results releases comment on the brand. Estée Lauder’s annual results for fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026 both named Bobbi Brown among brands with lower sales. In August 2025: declines “from the face subcategory from Bobbi Brown, reflecting retail softness for the brands”. In August 2026: “Bobbi Brown net sales decreased, primarily reflecting continued declines in the lip and eye sub-categories”. No brand-level revenue figure is published.

On claims, four products carry a 24-hour figure: “24-hour makeup priming” on the Face Base, “24-hour hydrating matte foundation” on the Weightless Skin Foundation, a “24-hour cream eyeshadow stick”, and 24 hours in the kajal’s own name. The four pages read do not cite a panel, protocol or laboratory for those figures. A fifth product, the Mini Skin Long-Wear foundation, claims 16-hour wear on its Indian listing.

The Indian listing for the Weightless Skin Foundation mini carries “96% say it leaves skin looking balanced” and “91% say it leaves bare skin looking healthier”. The listing, as read on 2 September 2026, does not state a sample size, duration or method for those figures.

Credit where the brand does better. The Vitamin Enriched Soothing Serum’s Indian listing publishes its substantiation: “Clinical testing on 51 women, after using product for 4 weeks”. That gives a panel size and a duration; the listing does not name the laboratory or give the result. And the Weightless Skin Foundation’s Indian listing declares its UV filters by percentage — Octinoxate 6.7%, Titanium Dioxide 1.6% — which is uncommon on an Indian makeup page. The listing does not name the test method or standard for the SPF 15.

Before 18% GST, all four Bobbi Brown hero products read on 2 September 2026 cost less in India than at American list price.

On animal testing, PETA’s directory lists Bobbi Brown under “Companies to Avoid” as a brand that tests. Its parent publishes a list of the brands in its portfolio holding cruelty-free certifications, and Bobbi Brown is not on it. The brand makes no cruelty-free claim of its own, as at 2 September 2026.

The court record is thin and what exists went the company’s way. A United States federal court in Illinois dismissed a class action on 12 January 2024 over virtual try-on tools, brought under an Illinois biometric privacy statute; Bobbi Brown Professional Cosmetics was one of the named defendants, and the court dismissed the claim. In India, the case databases carry nothing with the brand as a party, as at 2 September 2026. India’s advertising council, searched the same day by brand name and by the advertiser’s corporate name, holds no complaint outcome for Bobbi Brown. That is what the record contains as at that date, not a clearance — a council rules on what is put in front of it.

Buying it in India

On 15 December 2025 bobbibrown.in “permanently discontinued accepting orders” and now says it “does not facilitate any online sales” — the same wording, the same date and the same Shoppers Stop hand-off that appeared on the group’s other Indian sites. Shoppers Stop still handles warranty and returns on earlier purchases, and had opened a Bobbi Brown boutique at Vasant Kunj’s Promenade Mall as recently as 8 November 2024.

The Indian channel, in four dates
  • July 2005The group enters India with a MAC store in Mumbai
  • 8 November 2024A new Bobbi Brown boutique opens in New Delhi
  • 15 December 2025bobbibrown.in permanently stops taking orders
  • 24 February 2026Shoppers Stop counts 79 specialty beauty stores, Bobbi Brown among the brands

The counters stayed open; only the brand’s own checkout closed.

The site now points to ten standalone stores across eight cities — more than the group’s other Indian brand sites name — and otherwise to “authorized third-party online and offline stores, which are neither operated nor controlled by us”. Online that means Sephora India, Tira and Nykaa Luxe.

Check 01

Read the importer block on the box

Importer name and address, country of origin, net quantity and month of manufacture are required on an imported cosmetic. Two of twelve listings we read showed a different address; the pack is the version that counts.

Check 02

Do not assume American-made

A third of the listings read declared Canada, Belgium or a thirteen-country menu. If the origin matters to you, check the specific product rather than the brand’s address.

Check 03

Skip the mini unless you want the size

The 13 ml foundation costs 16% more per millilitre than the 30 ml, and the 7 ml primer 33% more than the 50 ml jar. Small packs here are a convenience purchase, not a saving.

Check 04

Look for a panel size beside a percentage

One product in this range publishes a panel size and duration — 51 women, four weeks. The “24-hour” and “96% say” listings read do not cite a panel, duration or method.

Check 05

Check the importer line on a deep discount

bobbibrown.in has not taken orders since 15 December 2025. On any heavily discounted imported cosmetic, look for the importer declaration on the listing and the box before you buy.

Common questions

Does Bobbi Brown still run Bobbi Brown Cosmetics?

No. She left in December 2016 and has had no role since. She now runs Jones Road Beauty, whose About page carries a disclaimer that she is “no longer affiliated or associated with the Bobbi Brown Cosmetics company or the Bobbi Brown branded products”.

Who owns the name Bobbi Brown?

Estée Lauder, through a Delaware company called Bobbi Brown Professional Cosmetics, Inc., which holds the trademarks and is listed as a subsidiary in the group’s annual filing. The name was sold with the business in 1995.

Can I buy Jones Road in India?

Not from the brand. Its shipping page lists the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and the European Union. India is not on that list, and no Indian retail partner was found.

Is Bobbi Brown cheaper in India than in America?

On two of the four hero products, yes — the eyeliner by 28% and the lip colour by 15%. The primer and the foundation stick cost more here. Strip out 18% GST and all four are cheaper in India before tax.

Can I still buy from the Indian website?

No. bobbibrown.in stopped accepting orders permanently on 15 December 2025 and says it does not facilitate online sales. It now lists ten stores in eight cities and refers shoppers to third-party sellers it says it does not control.

The FA take

The complexion range is the reason to buy this brand, and India is not a bad place to buy it — pre-tax, all four heroes cost less here than in America, and the eyeliner is 28% cheaper even at MRP. The importer declaration is on the listing, and one product publishes a panel size and duration beside its claim.

The ₹4,200 median puts it in the luxury band, so weigh what you get for that. Four products carry 24-hour figures and a foundation mini a “96% say” line, and the listings read do not cite the testing behind them. The minis cost more per millilitre than the full sizes.

Buy the 30 ml foundation over the 13 ml mini, and the ₹1,200 kajal is the best value in the range; judge wear claims by your own experience until the brand publishes its test method.
