Louis Philippe Brand Audit: A British Mark, Bought in 2000

Louis Philippe's name came from Taunton, Somerset, and the Aditya Birla group bought the mark outright with effect from 16 February 2000. On 6 September 2026, 73 of 74 listings sold below MRP — and the brand's own store was the dearest of the three places to buy the same shirt.

Louis Philippe sells formal shirts in every Indian mall under a name that sounds like a French king. It was not invented in Bangalore, and it is not rented. It was filed in India by a company in Somerset, and the Aditya Birla group bought it outright.

The other half is on the price tag. Across 74 listings read on 6 September 2026, in three shops, 73 sold below MRP on a Saturday with no sale running.

The short answer

Louis Philippe is Indian-owned today, and the mark behind it was created by a British company — The British Van Heusen Company of Taunton, Somerset — then assigned to the Aditya Birla group with effect from 16 February 2000. The company answerable for it now is Aditya Birla Lifestyle Brands Limited, listed since 23 June 2025. On 6 September 2026 the brand’s own store was the dearest of three places to buy the same shirt, at a median 25% off MRP against Myntra’s 52%.

Where the name came from

The register carries application 505557, “Louis Philippe Elysee”, in class 25. It was filed on 17 February 1989 by “The British Van Heusen Company, Victoria Street, Taunton, Somerset, England, U.K.” The same entry records Indian Rayon and Industries Ltd — the Aditya Birla company later renamed Aditya Birla Nuvo — as subsequent proprietor from 16 February 2000, by virtue of an assignment deed dated 21 January 2000. The mark runs to 17 February 2030.

An assignment is a sale, not a licence: the proprietor changes outright and nothing reverts. These details come from a mirror of the Controller General’s record rather than the registry itself, so read them as what the register carries.

One mark, four names
  1. The British Van Heusen Company, TauntonFiled in class 25 on 17 February 1989
  2. Indian Rayon and Industries LtdProprietor from 16 February 2000, on a deed dated 21 January 2000
  3. Aditya Birla Nuvo Limited, Madura GarmentsFiled the class-25 device mark on 10 March 2010, as an Indian company
  4. Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail LimitedProprietor of record on 6 September 2026, renewed to 10 March 2030

One date is worth flagging. The Delhi High Court, deciding a Peter England matter on 9 January 2025, recorded an assignment deed of that same date, 21 January 2000, from a different English company. Two deeds carrying one date are on the record. Nobody has read either instrument, and this page does not say they are one.

The group’s own annual report is looser than the register. It says the 1999 purchase of Madura Garments brought “ownership or exclusive licensing rights” for four brands together, without saying which brand fell into which bucket. For Louis Philippe the register answers it, and the answers next door differ sharply: Van Heusen‘s Indian clothing marks stand in a New York company’s name, and Arrow is licensed, with the filings saying so in terms.

Which company answers for the shirt today

Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail demerged its four lifestyle brands into a new company. The National Company Law Tribunal in Mumbai sanctioned the scheme on 27 March 2025, with an effective date of 1 May 2025 and a record date of 22 May 2025, one new share for each old. Aditya Birla Lifestyle Brands Limited listed on 23 June 2025.

For the year to 31 March 2026, reported on 7 May 2026, it had revenue of ₹8,396 crore, EBITDA of ₹1,429 crore at a 17.0% margin and normalised profit of ₹209 crore. Its lifestyle portfolio brought in ₹7,154 crore. Louis Philippe’s own share is in none of it: the annual report says each key lifestyle brand has passed ₹1,000 crore and two have passed ₹2,000 crore, without saying which two.

What the label actually says

Under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, notified as G.S.R. 202(E) on 7 March 2011, a pre-packed garment must declare a manufacturer or packer with an address, the net quantity, the country of origin and a retail sale price inclusive of all taxes. Worth saying once, plainly: that declaration names who is legally answerable for the goods, not who sewed the garment.

The name varies style by style, inside a single shop. Of 40 Louis Philippe shirt listings on Tata CLiQ on 6 September 2026, 30 named Aditya Birla Lifestyle Brands across thirteen addresses, four named Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail with its Madura Fashion & Lifestyle division, and six carried no manufacturer field. Of 20 Myntra styles that day, 18 named Aditya Birla Lifestyle Brands, one its wholly owned subsidiary Aditya Birla Garments Limited, and one an outside company, Aditree Apparels Manufacturing Private Limited. All 15 declarations on the brand’s own store named Aditya Birla Lifestyle Brands.

Country of origin read India on all 69 declarations carrying the field, and the importer field read “NA” wherever it appeared. The garments are declared made in India, so no customs duty sits inside these prices. Fibre composition was published on all 74 listings — 35 of the 40 on Tata CLiQ were 100% cotton — and fabric weight in GSM on none of them. Judge the cloth by its composition and by feeling it in the shop.

What Louis Philippe costs in India

Every price below was read on 6 September 2026, as a logged-out shopper sees it, before coupons.

Where Listings read Median discount to MRP
Myntra 19 52%
Tata CLiQ 40 30%
Louis Philippe’s own store 15 25%

The brand’s own shop is the dearest of the three. Follow one MRP around: a shirt priced at ₹2,625 sold at ₹1,260 on Myntra, between ₹1,811 and ₹2,336 on Tata CLiQ, and between ₹1,968 and ₹2,336 on the brand’s own site — a spread of ₹1,076 on the same day. At ₹2,499 MRP it ran ₹1,274, ₹1,474 to ₹1,774, and ₹1,724 to ₹1,874, in the same order.

Of the 74 listings, 73 sold below MRP; the exception was a new-season casual shirt at ₹2,599. The discounts cluster on a few steps — 11%, 25%, 31% and 41% on Tata CLiQ, 49% or 52% on Myntra — rather than on scattered numbers. How those steps are set is published nowhere.

The MRP on a Louis Philippe shirt is not a price. It is the number the discount is measured from.

It is tempting to read that as how Indian apparel works. On the same day, every Westside listing checked — ten on Tata CLiQ, eleven on its own site — sold at MRP, the selling price equal to the printed one. Westside’s sale collections were built and empty that day rather than absent, so that is one day’s reading and not a permanent policy. Even so, a standing discount is a choice somebody makes.

What the record holds

Under the group’s own names, the advertising council’s file holds nothing relevant, because the apparel business files as “Madura Fashion & Lifestyle”. Under that name the record holds two matters — one on a Louis Philippe Jeans advertisement, brought by a member of the public, and one on Van Heusen innerwear. Both were not upheld, which is to say both went the advertiser’s way.

Those outcomes were on two advertisements as they then stood. They are not rulings about the brand generally, not a standing ban on any form of words, and nobody has ruled on a Louis Philippe advertisement as it runs today. The council is a self-regulatory industry body rather than a statutory regulator. Nothing adverse sits on that record against this brand.

Buying it in India

Check 01

Start from the MRP, not the percentage

“41% off” tells you nothing until you know what it is off. Two shirts at the same percentage can sit ₹300 apart.

Check 02

Open all three shops before you pay

On one shirt price on one day, the gap between cheapest and dearest was ₹1,076, and the brand’s own store was the dearest.

Check 03

Read the declaration, not the marketing copy

Open “More Product Information” on the listing, or turn the pack over in the shop. Manufacturer, address, origin, net quantity and MRP inclusive of taxes are there.

Check 04

Know who answers if it goes wrong

Most labels name Aditya Birla Lifestyle Brands; a few name Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail. The brand’s declaration carries a customer-care line, 8105060501, and a Bengaluru address.

Common questions

Is Louis Philippe a French brand?

No. The mark was filed in India in 1989 by a British company in Taunton, Somerset, and assigned to the Aditya Birla group from 16 February 2000. It is Indian-owned, and the garments are declared made in India.

Which company owns Louis Philippe now?

Aditya Birla Lifestyle Brands Limited, listed since 23 June 2025 after a demerger. The register read on 6 September 2026 showed the older company, Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail, as proprietor; the demerger document says the intellectual property is in the process of being assigned across.

Why do listings name different manufacturers?

The declaration names who is legally answerable for the goods, not who sewed the garment, and it is made style by style. On 6 September 2026, three companies and more than a dozen addresses appeared across three shops.

Where is Louis Philippe cheapest?

On 6 September 2026, Myntra, at a median 52% off MRP against 30% on Tata CLiQ and 25% on the brand’s own store. That is one day’s reading, so check all three yourself.

The FA take

The ownership story is cleaner than most brands with a European-sounding name can claim. The mark was made in England, sold in 2000, and has been Indian since, with a renewal running to 2030. The clothes are declared made in India, so no import duty is buried in the price, and fibre composition is printed on every listing.

The price is where a buyer should be sceptical. An MRP that 73 of 74 listings sold below, on a day with no sale on, is a reference number rather than a price — and the brand’s own shop was the dearest of the three. Fabric weight is published nowhere, and no filing gives this brand’s revenue.

Worth its ₹1,300 to ₹1,900 street price for a cotton formal shirt, and almost none of its printed MRP.
