A Panthère de Cartier at ₹69,50,000 has a battery inside it. So does every other Panthère in the Indian catalogue, and every Tank Must except the extra-large. The cheapest mechanical Cartier sold here costs ₹5,90,000. The movement type is printed on the specification line, and it is worth reading before you buy.

How it started
Louis-François Cartier took over Adolphe Picard’s workshop on Rue Montorgueil, Paris, in 1847; watchmaking came much later. The Santos was designed in 1904 for the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont and sold only from 1911; the Tank was conceived in 1917 and released in 1919. India enters early too: Jacques Cartier came here in 1911 hunting pearls, and the house built the Patiala necklace of 1928.
You will read that the Santos was the first wristwatch. It was not. Breguet’s own archive records watch number 2639, made for the wrist on a commission of 8 June 1810 — 94 years earlier. Cartier did not invent the wristwatch. It invented the reason a man would wear one.

- Compagnie Financière Richemont SA1998 — buys out the minorities; Cartier is wholly its own
Cartier has been entirely Swiss-owned for 28 years. The French part is the name.
What they actually make
Richemont is listed on the Swiss exchange, and in voting terms it is controlled by one shareholder. Its two share classes carry one vote each: 537,582,089 ‘A’ shares of CHF 1.00 par value, and as many ‘B’ shares of CHF 0.10 — a tenth of the money, half the votes.
Every B share sits with Compagnie Financière Rupert, a Geneva partnership run by Richemont’s chairman, Johann Rupert. With its 6,418,850 A shares, that vehicle controlled 50.60% of the votes on 10.18% of the capital at 31 March 2026. No other shareholder held even 3%.
Every other shareholder in the world put together owns 89.8% of the money and 49.4% of the votes.
- Jewellery Maisons€16,539m of sales at a 30.5% margin — Cartier is filed here
- Specialist Watchmakers€3,149m at 3.4% — eight dedicated watch brands
- Fashion and accessories€2,732m, and a €96m operating loss
Cartier’s division earned €5,037m of operating profit against a group total of €4,492m.
Richemont files Cartier under jewellery and never publishes what Cartier alone earns. Yet Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult, on 20 February 2026, ranked Cartier second in the world by watch turnover at CHF 3,488 million — more than all eight Specialist Watchmakers combined, at roughly CHF 2,946 million. One is a modelled wholesale estimate and the other reported sales, so they are not like for like. Both halves hold: Cartier is the world’s second-largest watch brand and it is not a watch company.
The watches are properly Swiss, built at La Chaux-de-Fonds. The automatic is calibre 1847 MC — 28,800 vibrations an hour, 40-hour reserve, introduced in 2015. Call it a Richemont calibre rather than an in-house one: it was designed inside the group that owns Cartier, and shares its dimensions with the ETA 2892-A2 it replaced.
| Model and reference | Indian MRP | Movement |
|---|---|---|
| Tank Must Small, WSTA0110 | ₹3,85,000 | Quartz |
| Tank Must Large, WSTA0106 | ₹4,54,000 | Quartz |
| Tank Française Medium, WSTA0074 | ₹5,90,000 | Quartz |
| Tank Must XL, WSTA0040 | ₹5,90,000 | Automatic |
| Panthère, all 25 references listed | up to ₹69,50,000 | Quartz |
Below about ₹5.9 lakh, almost everything Cartier sells here runs on a battery. A ₹4,23,000 Tank Must and a ₹69,50,000 gold Panthère carry the same category of movement as an ordinary quartz watch costing a few thousand rupees. You pay for the case, the finishing and the name, so check the movement line first.
What Cartier costs in India
Cartier puts rupee prices on its own website, from ₹3.45 lakh to ₹1.87 crore. In a category built on price opacity that is rare — only Longines does the same here. The figures below are a long-established Indian luxury watch retailer’s published MRPs.
- US list, sales tax excluded
- ₹8,80,440
- Swiss shelf price, VAT stripped
- ₹8,51,242
- Indian MRP ₹9,55,000, GST stripped
- ₹8,09,322
- Gap
- 8.1% cheaper in India

That is the steel Santos large model, WSSA0018, at ₹95.70 to the dollar. Two more references agree: the Santos Medium at ₹8,70,000 is 8.3% below US list pre-tax, the rose-gold Tank Louis Cartier at ₹16,30,000 is 8.6% below. Half a point of spread across a range that nearly doubles in price is a rule, not luck.
The import stack looks brutal — 20% basic customs duty, a cess, a surcharge and 18% IGST, about 49% of assessable value. But duty is charged on the landed transfer value, not on retail, and a watch selling at ₹9,55,000 does not land at ₹9,55,000. The IGST portion is input credit the importer recovers. What is left works out near 7% of the shelf price.
Cartier prices the shelf, not the cost: sticker against sticker, the Indian tag is 3.8% above Switzerland’s and 5.1% below Germany’s. On this brand, “you pay a duty premium in India” does not hold on these references — a pattern that runs through our watch coverage.
Ownership cost is the weaker half. Cartier’s published service list is American: about $60 for a battery, from $430 for a complete service. We could find no Indian list, so get a written estimate from the boutique before you buy. On a quartz Tank Must the recurring cost is a battery, not an overhaul.
Who Cartier is actually for
Not for anyone comparing it with an Indian watch brand: Titan’s ceiling is ₹77,995 and Cartier’s floor is ₹3,45,000. The comparison that works is Omega — ₹9,55,000 for the steel Santos against ₹9,29,300 for Omega’s steel flagship at Indian dealers, both about 8% below US list pre-tax.
The uncomfortable comparison is the movement. A Fastrack under ₹3,000, a ₹52,795 Titan Raga and a ₹4,23,000 Tank Must are all quartz. Eight times the Raga’s price buys a sapphire crystal, a steel case, Swiss assembly and the name — and the Tank is one of the few watch cases that changed how watches look. That is a fair thing to want. If you want a mechanical movement, your entry price is ₹5,90,000.
Reputation and controversies
India has its own decided Cartier case. On 4 January 2016 the Delhi High Court, in a suit brought by Cartier International AG (neutral citation 2016:DHC:26), found that a website sold counterfeit goods bearing the Cartier, Panerai, Vacheron Constantin and Jaeger-LeCoultre marks. It granted a permanent injunction and awarded ₹1 crore in punitive damages. All four brands belong to Richemont.
Cartier has also lost. On 13 June 2018 the UK Supreme Court unanimously allowed an appeal by British Telecommunications, holding that rights-holders must indemnify internet providers for the cost of obeying site-blocking orders. Under that ruling the rights-holder, not the internet provider, carries the cost of a blocking order.
Cartier itself confirmed a customer data breach and warned of targeted approaches, reported on 3 June 2025. We found no regulator’s order, penalty or concluded settlement against Cartier or Richemont with a stated outcome and date.
Buying it in India
Cartier’s store locator returns two locations here: Emporio Mall at Vasant Kunj in New Delhi, and Jio World Plaza at Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai, opened in 2023. That is the entire official network for 1.4 billion people, against 1,393 directly operated boutiques worldwide. Behind them sits Richemont India Private Limited, whose ₹673.07 crore of FY2025 revenue covers Cartier, IWC, Panerai and Montblanc together.
Cartier’s India locator names only those two boutiques and no authorised retailers at all. Buying anywhere else, confirm authorised status with Cartier first — outside its own network it will not even authenticate the watch.
The warranty is genuinely good: two years international, eight once you register for Cartier Care. The condition is that the watch came from a Cartier boutique, cartier.com or an official retailer, with the card stamped. Where an Indian repair is carried out is not published, so if you live outside Delhi or Mumbai, ask before you pay.
Carrying one home from abroad does not help either. The duty-free allowance and duty rate for travellers are set by the Baggage Rules 2026; check the current figures with customs before counting on a saving. India is already 8.1% to 8.6% below American list pre-tax, so foreign sales tax or Indian duty wipes out the saving before you reach the warranty.
Cartier publishes no authentication guide — no serial checker, no case-back tells. It says only that it cannot authenticate anything bought outside its boutiques and authorised retailers. So the checks below are about channel and paperwork, not the watch.
Buy in the network, or confirm it
Vasant Kunj and Bandra Kurla Complex are the two boutiques Cartier lists. Anywhere else, confirm with Cartier that the seller is authorised.
Get the card stamped, then register it
The card must carry the seller’s stamp, and registering for Cartier Care takes cover to eight years. An unstamped card is the clearest warning sign.
Treat ₹3,45,000 as the floor
That is where Cartier’s own Indian site starts. A current-catalogue Cartier offered well below it is not a bargain, it is a different object.
Ask what is inside it
Ask the seller whether that Tank is the quartz Large or the automatic XL, and check the answer against the specification line.
Common questions
Is Cartier owned by LVMH?
No. Cartier is a Maison of Compagnie Financière Richemont SA of Geneva, wholly Richemont’s since 1998. LVMH owns TAG Heuer, Hublot and Bulgari; the two groups compete.
Are Cartier watches quartz or mechanical?
Mostly quartz at the accessible end. Every Panthère in the Indian catalogue is quartz, and every Tank Must except the XL, which at ₹5,90,000 is the cheapest mechanical Cartier sold here. Checked 31 August 2026.
Is a Cartier cheaper abroad than in India?
No. Across three references India is 8.1% to 8.6% below American list pre-tax, and 4.9% below Switzerland. Add foreign sales tax or Indian duty and buying abroad costs more.
Was the Santos the first wristwatch?
No. Breguet’s archive records a wrist-worn watch, number 2639, commissioned on 8 June 1810 — 94 years before the Santos, which was designed in 1904 and sold from 1911.

Cartier does two things its rivals do not. It puts rupee prices on its own website, and sets them 8.1% to 8.6% below American list before tax, taking Indian duty out of its own margin instead of yours. On price transparency it stands out among the luxury watch brands selling here.
The bottom of the range needs a closer look. At ₹3,85,000 to ₹4,54,000 you are buying a quartz watch, which the specification line states. Two boutiques for the whole country is thin, and no Indian service price is published.
Buy the Tank Must XL at ₹5,90,000 or the Santos at ₹9,55,000 and you have a real watch at a fair Indian price; at ₹4,23,000 you are paying for the case and the name around a quartz movement, so if you want a mechanical watch, find the extra ₹1.67 lakh or wait.
