Montblanc Brand Audit: A Pen House That Sells Watches

Montblanc is a German pen house with Swiss-made watches, reported by Richemont with its fashion brands, not its watchmakers. What it means for Indian buyers.
Montblanc brand audit by FashionAudit: Montblanc logo over a luxury black-and-gold fountain pen with a gold nib

Montblanc is a Hamburg pen company. It started in 1906, sold its first watch in 1997, and bought the 1858-founded Minerva manufacture in 2006. Richemont, which owns it, does not file it among its watchmakers. It reports it with Chloé, dunhill and Purdey in its “Other” segment, the Fashion & Accessories Maisons.

The short answer

Montblanc is a German pen house whose watches are Swiss made, at Le Locle and Villeret. Richemont reports it in Fashion & Accessories, not among its eight specialist watchmakers. Indian prices run about ₹3.4 lakh to ₹43 lakh, and on the one matched reference India is 10.5% below Switzerland before tax. Checked 31 August 2026.

How it started

Three Germans started the business in Hamburg in 1906 — a stationer, a banker and a Berlin engineer. It became the Simplo Filler Pen Company in 1908 and Montblanc-Simplo GmbH in 1932, still the legal name that files its lawsuits. The Meisterstück arrived in 1924. Montblanc made pens for ninety-one years before it made a watch.

How a pen company ended up in a watch group
  1. Montblanc-Simplo GmbHHamburg, 1906 — pens, and nothing else, for ninety-one years
  2. Alfred Dunhill LtdBuys Montblanc in 1977, twenty years before the first watch
  3. Vendôme Luxury GroupDunhill merged with Cartier in 1993
  4. Compagnie Financière Richemont SABuys out the minorities in 1998 for full ownership

Montblanc was never bought as a watch brand. It arrived as a pen company, and the pens are why it is here.

What they actually make

There are two Swiss sites and they are not the same business. Le Locle makes tens of thousands of watches a year, the ones you can walk in and buy. Villeret is the old Minerva manufacture, where thirty watchmakers build two hundred to three hundred a year by hand.

Le Locle’s entry watches run Sellita-based movements. Above them sit ValFleurier calibres, and ValFleurier is a branch of Richemont International SA supplying the whole group, not a Montblanc asset. Only the Villeret calibres are Montblanc’s own end to end.

The Minerva half, 1858 to 2026
  • 1858Charles and Hyppolite Robert found the firm at Villeret
  • 1887The Minerva brand is registered
  • 2006Richemont buys Fabrique d’Horlogerie Minerva SA
  • 2007Minerva is assigned to Montblanc as its haute horlogerie institute
  • April 2026Minerva becomes a distinct entity; the Montblanc name comes off the dial

The 1858 collection is named after Minerva’s founding year, not Montblanc’s.

Montblanc’s own words for April 2026: Minerva becomes “a distinct entity within the Montblanc Maison”. Europa Star had called it “nonsense” to melt two identities together while keeping both names, and Montblanc has since separated them.

For a buyer, the calibre is the practical question. Montblanc’s product pages do not state it — a ₹3.4 lakh diver carries a case size, a water-resistance rating and the words “automatic movement”. The watch press names it as MB 24.17, a Sellita SW200-1, and that matters, because a mechanical movement changes what you own.

Until April 2026 the same name sat on a Sellita-powered diver and on a hand-built chronograph costing twenty-one times as much.

What Montblanc costs in India

The cleanest comparison is the Bohème Automatic Date 30 mm, reference MB133306, priced by Montblanc itself in Switzerland and the United States against an Indian trade-press figure.

Swiss shelf price CHF 3,100, VAT stripped
₹3,42,708
US list $3,770, sales tax excluded
₹3,60,789
Indian price ₹3,62,000, GST stripped
₹3,06,780
Gap
10.5% cheaper in India than Switzerland

India is also 15.0% below the American figure, but the Swiss one is the fair test. The United States imposed a 39% tariff on Swiss goods from 7 August 2025, and Montblanc’s American list prices moved up afterwards.

Worth knowing

Montblanc publishes no Indian price list, and no authorised dealer we could reach prints one. The rupee figures here come from Indian trade press marked approximate, so treat the 10.5% gap as the best available comparison and confirm the MRP in the boutique.

That runs against the line many articles about Swiss watches in India repeat. Wristwatches do attract 20% basic customs duty, a 4% cess, a surcharge and 18% IGST — about ₹49 on every ₹100 of assessable value. But duty falls on landed transfer value, not on retail, and the IGST is input tax credit for the importer. The unrecoverable slice is 26.4% of a much smaller number, and the rest is a pricing decision.

Minerva The Unveiled ChronographM17.26, VilleretEUR 84,000, about ₹93.9 lakh

European retail is tax-inclusive; the rupee figures are conversions at Federal Reserve rates, not Indian prices.

EUR 84,000 against EUR 4,000 is twenty-one times, inside one brand. Everything above ₹40 lakh here is Minerva work.

Who Montblanc is actually for

Take the entry point honestly. About ₹3.4 lakh buys an Iced Sea with a 300 m case, a ceramic bezel insert, ISO 6425 conformity and a Sellita SW200-1 inside. A Tissot from ₹39,500 runs a base of the same industrial class. You pay eight and a half times as much for the case, the finishing and the name.

That can be a defensible purchase. It is a poor one if you think you are buying in-house watchmaking: only the MB 29.29 in the Iced Sea Deep 4810 is chronometer-certified. Longines, at ₹1,52,000 to ₹5,23,000, publishes its calibres, its certifications and its Indian service prices. Montblanc publishes none of the three, and gives two years of warranty against Cartier’s eight.

So it suits someone who wants the object and the shop and knows what is inside. For a watch you will wear every day, our watch coverage starts in more sensible places, including Indian brands under ₹3,000.

Reputation and controversies

Montblanc-Simplo GmbH was the second claimant in the case that created the UK’s power to block trade-mark-infringing websites. Mr Justice Arnold gave judgment on 17 October 2014, ordering the main British internet providers to block six sites selling counterfeits bearing the Cartier, Montblanc and IWC marks. One was a fake Montblanc pen shop.

The brand-owners lost the sequel. On 13 June 2018 the UK Supreme Court unanimously allowed the providers’ appeal on costs, holding that the rights-holders must indemnify them for the cost of putting the blocks in place. The blocking order stood; the cost of implementing it sits with the rights-holders.

On the commercial side, Richemont’s whole “Other” segment, of which Montblanc is one Maison, turned over €2,732 million in the year to 31 March 2026 with a loss of €96 million; Richemont does not publish a Montblanc-only result. Montblanc is not in the published top twenty of the industry’s annual Swiss watch ranking. Describing Montblanc’s year, Richemont credits “writing instruments and high-visibility brand initiatives”.

Buying it in India

Montblanc is unusually present here, and it got there on pens. As at December 2022 it had eleven boutiques across six cities and about fifty points of sale, and a boutique opened at Bengaluru airport on 29 August 2024. Some are run by the retailer Art of Time, which makes them authorised through a partner rather than unauthorised.

Watches are the odd category out. Montblanc’s stated Indian online routes, Tata CLiQ Luxury and William Penn, carry pens and leather. For a watch you must walk into a boutique or an authorised retailer.

Check 01

Use a named channel

A Montblanc boutique or a named authorised watch retailer. The online routes the brand points customers to sell pens and leather.

Check 02

Find the guarantee certificate

It is printed on the back of the Service Guide in the box, and a claim needs it. Without it the watch has no warranty.

Check 03

Treat ₹3.4 lakh as the floor

That is about the cheapest genuine Montblanc automatic sold here. A “Montblanc” watch offered at a small fraction of that is not one to buy as genuine.

Check 04

Ask which calibre, and what it is based on

An authorised dealer should be able to name it, for example “MB 24.17, a Sellita SW200-1 base”. The product page does not.

Check 05

Get the service answer in writing

Montblanc publishes no service prices or interval in any market. Ask what an overhaul costs and where the watch goes, before you pay.

Buying abroad does not work on the watches. The duty-free allowance and rate for a returning resident are set by the Baggage Rules 2026 — ₹75,000 on the summary read, so check the current figure with customs — and no Montblanc watch comes near it, so anything you carry in is declarable. Most pens do fit: a Meisterstück Classique at ₹69,300 sits under it, a 149 at ₹1,04,400 does not.

The warranty answer is clean. Montblanc’s guarantee is international by its own terms, so an authorised foreign purchase with a completed certificate is covered here. A missing certificate, the normal condition of grey-market stock, is what kills it. One point in the brand’s favour: the SW200-1 is among the world’s most widely serviced automatics, so parts are easy to get.

Common questions

Is Montblanc a Swiss watch brand?

No. Montblanc is a German company, founded in Hamburg in 1906 and still headquartered there. Its watches are Swiss made, at Le Locle and Villeret. It is a German brand with a Swiss watch.

Does the 1858 collection date from 1858?

Not Montblanc’s. The Minerva manufacture at Villeret was founded that year. Montblanc dates from 1906 and bought Minerva in 2006, so the collection carries somebody else’s founding year.

Are Montblanc movements in-house?

The volume watches run Sellita SW200-1 bases, sold as calibre MB 24.17. Above them sit ValFleurier movements, and ValFleurier is a Richemont branch serving the whole group. Only the Minerva calibres are Montblanc’s own.

Is a Montblanc cheaper in India than abroad?

On the one fully matched reference, yes — India is 10.5% below Switzerland and 15.0% below American list once tax is stripped. The American gap is inflated by the 39% tariff on Swiss goods from 7 August 2025.

The FA take

The price finding is real and in Montblanc’s favour. On the matched Bohème reference India is 10.5% below Switzerland and 15.0% below American list once tax is stripped, and the American figure is inflated by a tariff rather than by anything Indian. Whatever you have been told about import duty is not visible in these numbers.

The middle of the range is where to look hardest. About ₹3.4 lakh buys a Sellita SW200-1 base that the product page does not name, under two years of warranty against Cartier’s eight, with no published service price anywhere. The 1858 heritage belongs to Minerva, bought in 2006 and now sold under its own name, so the Montblanc-branded catalogue is the Le Locle catalogue.

Buy the Iced Sea only if you want that object and know a Sellita is inside; for mechanical credentials at the money Longines publishes its calibres, its certifications and its Indian service prices, and Montblanc publishes none of the three — and if what you love is the brand itself, the ₹69,300 pen is what it is genuinely best at.
