A Hublot in India starts at ₹8,85,500, and the twenty-lakh watches are the ones people actually buy. The received wisdom says Indian duty makes them dear. It does not. On six references checked 31 August 2026, the Indian shelf price sits well below the American one, ex-tax. The interesting part is why — and why one Delhi shop sells the same watch for 6% less.
Hublot’s Indian MRP is its Swiss franc list price multiplied by exactly ₹115, GST included — thirty of thirty prices at one authorised retailer divide cleanly by 115. That puts India 15.6% below the United States and 11.8% below Switzerland, ex-tax, checked 31 August 2026. Buy here, not abroad, and quote two dealers: one prices at ₹108 per franc.

How it started
Carlo Crocco, an Italian who had left the family Binda Group, launched the first Hublot in 1980 as MDM Genève. Hublot is French for porthole, after that first bezel. The watch was a gold case held by twelve titanium screws on a black rubber strap — the pairing Hublot still calls its founding idea, and screws that sit on every Big Bang bezel today.
Jean-Claude Biver took over in 2004, on turnover of CHF 24–25 million. The Big Bang chronograph launched at Baselworld in April 2005, and trade accounts say it took the design prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève that year.

Biver did not found Hublot, which is the most repeated error about this brand — he arrived twenty-four years after Crocco. He changed the volume, the size and the marketing, not the recipe. Sales went from CHF 24 million in 2004 to roughly CHF 100 million by the end of 2006, and about CHF 200 million by 2008. LVMH bought the company at a price reported around CHF 500 million, and never disclosed terms.
What they actually make
- 1980Classic Original — gold, twelve screws, rubber
- 2005Big Bang — the sandwich-case chronograph, still the best seller
- 2008Classic Fusion — the slimmer, cheaper entry line
- 2010UNICO calibre, HUB1240 — the first in-house chronograph
- 2013Big Bang Unico — the watch that carries it
Hublot dates the Unico to 2013 and the trade to 2010; one is the watch, the other the calibre.
The in-house chronograph is the HUB1280 of 2018: 354 components, 43 jewels, a column wheel, a flyback function, a 72-hour power reserve and four patents. Nobody in the trade disputes that Hublot makes it. The Spirit of Big Bang adds the HUB4700, beating at 5 Hz — Hublot calls it the successor to the El Primero, the 1969 calibre belonging to sister brand Zenith.
The materials claims are the part enthusiasts under-credit. Magic Gold, unveiled in 2011, is boron carbide ceramic compressed at 2,000 MPa, sintered, then infiltrated with molten 24-carat gold. It measures 1,000 Vickers against 400 for ordinary 18K gold and 600 for hardened steel. The work was done with Professor Andreas Mortensen at EPFL, and the Swiss Central Office for Precious Metals Control certifies the result as 18K.
Not every claim is that clean. “Magic Ceramic”, launched in February 2025 as the world’s first multicoloured ceramic, is a first to market rather than a first to invent — Hublot has applied for a patent on the process rather than holding one, and Audemars Piguet already holds a polychrome ceramic patent. On sapphire Hublot words it correctly: it “did not invent the sapphire watch, it was the first to master its industrialisation.”
What Hublot costs in India
Hublot publishes no Indian prices at all, so every price below is an authorised Indian retailer’s, checked 31 August 2026. The grid is arithmetic: take the Swiss franc list price, multiply by 115, and you have the Indian MRP to the rupee.
| Reference | Hublot CHF list | Indian MRP |
|---|---|---|
| 431.NX.1370.RX Big Bang Original Unico Titanium 43 | CHF 16,900 | ₹19,43,500 |

That holds on all six references we compared: 15.5% to 15.7% below the US, and 11.8% below Switzerland. The mechanism is dull but worth knowing. Duty is levied on landed transfer value, not on retail, so a headline rate near 49% adds a single-digit percentage to the tag, and the importer reclaims the IGST. It is pricing to a global grid, not up from cost.
Which is why the India–EFTA agreement, in force since 1 October 2025 and phasing Swiss watch duty to zero over seven years, will not cut Hublot’s Indian prices. It cannot move a number never set by landed cost, and GST is untouched. Ethos Watches founder Yashovardhan Saboo made the same point: Indian prices are already globally aligned.
The sibling brand under the same roof works differently. TAG Heuer’s Indian MRP is its US dollar price grossed up for GST, landing within a fraction of a percent of parity. Apply that formula to Hublot and it overshoots by 15.5% to 15.7% every time. Global parity is a TAG Heuer policy, not an LVMH one.
And Hublot is discounted here, systematically. Johnson & Co., an authorised retailer in Connaught Place, prices its whole Hublot list at ₹108 per franc — all twenty-four references divide cleanly by 108. Two references appear on both sellers’ lists at ₹11,84,500 and ₹11,12,400, the same watch 6.09% apart. On the ₹19,43,500 Big Bang Original Unico that is ₹1,18,400.
Hublot’s engineering is better than its reputation, and its entry line is worse than its price implies.
Who Hublot is actually for
The buying rule is the movement split. The Big Bang Unico runs the HUB1280, which is genuinely Hublot’s own. The Classic Fusion that gets most Indian buyers into the brand at ₹8,85,500 runs the HUB1110 — a Sellita SW300-1 with a Hublot-branded rotor and a calendar module.
The SW300-1 is a clone of the ETA 2892: reliable, long-established, rated at 42 hours against the Unico’s 72. Hublot writes “Manufacture” on the spec sheets of movements it makes, and neither it nor its dealers print “Sellita” anywhere. That absence is the tell. If the sheet does not say Manufacture, you are looking at a Swiss ébauche and should price it accordingly.
SJX, reviewing the Classic Fusion Original in January 2023, put the fair criticism on the record: the Sellita is acceptable in the titanium and ceramic versions, though the watch would have been more compelling with a better calibre, and competitors offer in-house movements in the same bracket.
So Hublot suits a buyer who wants the Unico, the case work or the materials, at ₹19 lakh and up. Anyone looking further down the market will get more from our watch brand coverage — brands like Sonata sit orders of magnitude below this, and the analog versus digital comparison is a better start if you are still deciding.
Reputation and controversies
Hublot takes more criticism from enthusiasts than any Swiss brand of its size, and some of it is misplaced. Magic Gold survives testing: a named university partner, published comparators, and an assay certification that had to be argued for by separating the gold from the ceramic and weighing it. That is materials science, whatever you think of the design.
The commercial picture is less flattering. Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult’s February 2026 report says TAG Heuer, Hublot and Zenith all declined inside LVMH in 2025 while Bulgari, Louis Vuitton and Dior grew. LVMH’s own 2025 results give Hublot a mention for limited editions and no commercial claim.
One retail note: as at 31 August 2026, Ethos Watches, India’s largest luxury watch chain, shows Hublot as unavailable online and lists no products. That is the state of one catalogue on one date, and nothing more.
Buying it in India
Hublot lists two Indian boutiques of its own, in Mumbai and Bangalore, both run with Luxury Time India. Beyond them, prices come from Kapoor Watch Company, Johnson & Co. and Swiss Paradise.
The warranty is the fact most Indian buyers do not know. On 14 April 2026 Hublot announced a five-year international warranty, extendable to ten through its Hublotista owner programme. It covers selected watches bought from 1 January 2026 and excludes connected and pre-owned models. An authorised Indian retailer confirms it applies here — the longest cover in mainstream Swiss luxury.
Do the franc arithmetic
Divide the asking price by 115. A whole hundred Swiss francs means the standard Indian grid. At one Delhi retailer the divisor is 108.
Quote the same reference twice
Two authorised sellers price 6.09% apart on identical references — ₹1,18,400 on a ₹19,43,500 watch.
Use the price floor
The cheapest Hublot an authorised Indian retailer publishes is ₹7,45,200. Anything well below the grid is grey, damaged or fake.
Insist on registration, not the card
The proof that counts is a Hublotista registration against the serial number, which only an authorised purchase produces.
Do not carry one in
The baggage allowance is ₹75,000, so any Hublot must be declared and duty paid — and India is already 15.6% under the US price.
Hublot recommends a complete check-up every three to five years, a shorter interval than several peers and so a dearer ownership pattern. It publishes no service price for any market and no authentication guide either, so the defence against a fake is channel and arithmetic, not a bezel-screw count.
No Hublot service price list exists for India or anywhere else. Get a written overhaul quote for your specific movement from the boutique before you buy, and treat it as part of the price.
Common questions
Is Hublot cheaper in India than abroad?
Yes. On six references checked 31 August 2026, the Indian price is 15.6% below the US list and 11.8% below Swiss retail, ex-tax. Carrying one in also means duty on declaration, since the baggage allowance is only ₹75,000.
Did Jean-Claude Biver found Hublot?
No. Carlo Crocco founded it in 1980 as MDM Genève. Biver took over in 2004, launched the Big Bang in 2005, and sold to LVMH with Crocco in 2008.
Are all Hublot movements in-house?
No. The HUB1280 Unico is Hublot’s own, with 354 components and four patents. The Classic Fusion 38, 42 and 45 run calibres based on the Sellita SW300-1, an ETA 2892 clone.
Is Magic Gold real or marketing?
Real. It is boron carbide infiltrated with molten 24-carat gold, developed with Professor Andreas Mortensen at EPFL, measured at 1,000 Vickers against 400 for ordinary 18K gold, and still certified 18K by the Swiss assay authority.

Buy the Unico or buy something else. The HUB1280 is a real in-house chronograph with a column wheel, a flyback, a 72-hour reserve and four patents, and Magic Gold is genuine materials science. At ₹19,43,500 for the Big Bang Original Unico Titanium you are paying for engineering that exists, in the cheapest major market for it.
At the other end, the ₹8,85,500 Classic Fusion runs a Sellita SW300-1 with a Hublot rotor, and the spec sheet will not tell you so. The five-year warranty is the best in mainstream Swiss luxury, but no service price is published anywhere, so ownership cost is a number you must extract from a boutique in writing.
If the spec sheet does not say Manufacture, you are paying Hublot money for a Sellita — and if it does, quote two authorised dealers, because 6.09% on a ₹19 lakh watch is ₹1,18,400.
