Guerlain Brand Audit: LVMH’s 1828 Paris Perfume House

Guerlain was family-run for 166 years before LVMH bought it in 1994. No Indian company was found, Nykaa Luxe sells it, and the Rouge G refill costs ₹4,500.
Guerlain brand audit by FashionAudit: Guerlain logo and the headline “LVMH's 1828 Paris Perfume House” over a faceted glass perfume bottle with golden liquid

Guerlain is a Paris perfume and beauty house founded in 1828 and run by the founding family for 166 years before LVMH bought it. Its Indian retail footprint is narrow. We found no Guerlain company, shop or Indian website, and Sephora India, whose pages print an importer’s name for other brands, does not stock it. This audit sets out what that means for a buyer.

The short answer

Guerlain was founded in Paris in 1828 and stayed in the family until LVMH acquired it in 1994. In India, Nykaa Luxe listed 127 items on 2 September 2026 and Sephora India none. The Indian listings we read do not show the importer. Prices sit within 7% of American list either way, and the ₹4,500 Rouge G is a refill — the complete lipstick is ₹8,500.

How it started

Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain opened his first boutique in the heart of Paris, at 42 rue de Rivoli, in 1828. In 1853 he created the Eau de Cologne Impériale for the marriage of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, and the bee that decorates that bottle became the house emblem — a detail that matters more than usual, because bees now carry a good deal of the brand’s public argument. Shalimar followed in 1925. LVMH’s own page counts 1,100 fragrances since the founding.

The family owned and managed the house from 1828 until 1994, when LVMH acquired it — 166 years, and then a sale. A published LVMH timeline is the source for that year; LVMH’s own Guerlain page does not carry it. The in-house perfumer, Thierry Wasser, is described by LVMH as the heir to an olfactory legacy; he is not a member of the founding family.

Everything Guerlain does commercially today is done inside a group, and that group is one of the largest in the world.

LVMH reported revenue of €80.8 billion for 2025, with net profit of €10.9 billion. Perfumes and Cosmetics — the division Guerlain sits in — brought in €8,174 million at an 8.9% operating margin, which is roughly a tenth of the group at a margin well below its luxury average. Above LVMH sits the listed holding company Christian Dior SE with a 41% stake, and above that the Arnault family group, which reported crossing 50% of the capital and 65.94% of the voting rights in a February 2026 filing. LVMH publishes no Guerlain revenue, no Guerlain margin and no country split. Its entire brand-level comment for the year was that Guerlain was buoyed by the latest additions to two of its fragrance lines.

What they actually make

Fragrance is the core — Shalimar, Mon Guerlain, L’Heure Bleue, L’Homme Idéal and Vetiver. Skincare runs through Abeille Royale, the honey and bee franchise, and Orchidée Impériale at the top of the range. Makeup covers Rouge G, the refillable jewel-case lipstick, KissKiss, Terracotta bronzer, Météorites pearls and Ombre G eyeshadow. LVMH claims one Terracotta powder sold every thirty seconds.

On substantiation Guerlain sits on the better side of the counter, because it footnotes its numbers. Every claim we checked names a test type and a panel size on Guerlain’s own global product pages. KissKiss’s “24-hour hold” cites a clinical test on 25 volunteers and its “24-hour hydration” an instrumental test on 30. The Abeille Royale serum’s “+124% hydration” cites 40 women. Panels of 25 to 40 are the industry’s normal size; no laboratory is named and no report is linked, so these are in-house panels rather than published trials.

Three details in those footnotes change what the numbers mean, and Guerlain prints all three itself. The serum’s “−25% wrinkles” is qualified as measured after one application. Its “+99% smoother, +99% radiant” is a satisfaction test on 104 women, which is what users said rather than what an instrument measured — as is KissKiss’s “12 hours of comfort”, a self-scoring exercise on 30 people. And the three Black Bee honey figures, including the striking claim that one honey increases the skin cells’ natural hyaluronic acid production by 96%, are each footnoted as in-vitro tests on the ingredient. Those results describe the ingredient, not the finished serum on skin.

What Guerlain costs in India

Indian prices below are from Nykaa Luxe and Guerlain’s own American and French sites, all read on 2 September 2026, converted at ₹95.38 to the dollar and ₹110.62 to the euro on Federal Reserve rates for 28 August 2026.

Abeille Royale Youth Watery Oil Serum, 50 ml₹15,7003% over US, 1% under France

India from Nykaa Luxe; US and French list prices from guerlain.com. All read 2 September 2026. The Indian case priced is the Double Mirror Jewel Case and the overseas one is Le Croco, so that row compares bands rather than the identical design.

Strip the tax and the picture tilts further. Indian prices include 18% GST, French prices include 20% VAT, and American shelf prices exclude sales tax entirely. Before tax the four products sit 9%, 17%, 9% and 13% below their American prices, and level with Paris. That is a narrow band, close to parity.

It is not what an Indian buyer expects from an imported French house, and the reason is arithmetic. Tariff databases put basic customs duty on imported perfumes and lip preparations at 20%, plus a 10% surcharge on the duty and 18% IGST. But duty is charged on the value declared at the border, not on an American shelf price, so an Indian price is built from wholesale value plus a chosen margin. The exchange rate does the rest: at ₹95.38 to the dollar, a $50 lipstick converts to ₹4,769.

Now the single most useful thing in this audit for anyone about to buy a Rouge G. The ₹4,500 on the Indian listing is not a lipstick. It is a refill, and it has no case. Guerlain’s own page says so: for a first Rouge G purchase you choose a shade and a case to create your complete lipstick. The case is a separate purchase at ₹4,000 to ₹4,500.

₹4,000
What a first purchase actually costs
₹8,500 — 89% more than the listed price
Checked on

Two further points, both from Guerlain’s own pages. In India the refill costs more than the case — ₹4,500 against ₹4,000 — which inverts the usual intuition that the reusable part is the expensive half. In France it runs the other way, €42 against €36. And the system has had a generational break: Guerlain states that the new Rouge G cases are compatible only with the new-generation refills, and the reverse. A refillable case you already own may not take the refill you are about to buy.

Per unit, one product stands apart. KissKiss holds 1.85 g and costs ₹5,100, which is ₹2,757 a gram — the dearest thing per gram we have weighed on this counter, and dearer not because the price is high but because the pack is small.

ProductPack and pricePer gram or millilitre
KissKiss Honey-Infused lipstick1.85 g at ₹5,100₹2,757 a gram
Rouge G Satin refill3.5 g at ₹4,500₹1,286 a gram
Abeille Royale Youth Watery Oil Serum50 ml at ₹15,700₹314 a millilitre
Mon Guerlain Eau de Parfum100 ml at ₹17,400₹174 a millilitre

Nykaa Luxe, 2 September 2026. Net quantities are stated on these four listings and on very few others, so no per-unit figure is offered for the rest of the range. Working the unit price out before you pay is the same discipline we apply to price gaps in our Liberty audit.

Who Guerlain is actually for

The prices place it at the top of the Indian counter. Every priced makeup listing except a ₹3,500 lip pencil and a ₹3,600 eye pen sits above ₹4,000 — foundation at ₹6,400, Météorites at ₹7,300, eyeshadow at ₹8,900, loose powder at ₹9,100. Fragrance runs from ₹12,850 to ₹20,400 and skincare to ₹19,600.

It suits a buyer who wants a two-century French perfume house at roughly what a Parisian pays, and who reads footnotes — because Guerlain’s footnotes are unusually informative once you look at them. It suits a buyer who already knows which shade and which case they want, since there is no counter here to try them at. It suits less well a buyer who wants an Indian Guerlain company to deal with, since none was found.

On 2 September 2026 one Indian retailer carried priced Guerlain stock, and we found no Indian Guerlain company, shop or website.

Reputation and controversies

No Indian judgment naming Guerlain appears in the public judgment record as at 2 September 2026.

The Advertising Standards Council of India’s complaint-outcomes database carries no outcome for Guerlain or for LVMH on the same date, and no LVMH-group advertiser appears in it.

Guerlain’s Women for Bees programme with UNESCO is funded and renewed for three more years, according to both organisations’ pages. Its published figures differ from page to page.

Bees repopulated125 millionLVMH’s Guerlain page — not in Guerlain’s own report

All five read on 2 September 2026. The pages may count different periods or groups; no conclusion is drawn here.

The 125 million figure is published by LVMH. It does not appear in Guerlain’s Sustainable Development Report or on its commitment page, and no counting method is published beside it.

On emissions, Guerlain’s headline is a 79% cut in scopes 1 and 2 against a 2019 baseline, which is the company’s own operations and electricity. Its own report also prints the figure across all three scopes, including the supply chain that dominates a cosmetics footprint, and that number is 9% against a target of 20% by 2030. Guerlain’s report prints both figures.

On animal testing, PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies directory, checked 2 September 2026, lists Guerlain as not cruelty-free; that is PETA’s listing. Guerlain makes no cruelty-free claim, and we found no animal-testing statement on the pages read or in its 2024 sustainability report. Note also that testing cosmetics on animals has been illegal in India since 21 May 2014, so the question concerns the brand’s other markets.

Buying it in India

This is where Guerlain differs most from its group siblings, and a buyer should know it before ordering. A name search of an Indian company register on 2 September 2026 returned no Guerlain company. We found no Guerlain boutique in India, and no India-facing guerlain.com storefront; the storefronts we used were American, French, Singaporean and Austrian.

Nykaa Luxe listed 127 Guerlain items on 2 September 2026, the only Indian retailer we found with priced Guerlain stock. Tira has a Guerlain brand page with no products priced on the day. Sephora India — itself an LVMH banner, and stocking 214 Dior items and 117 Givenchy — carries no Guerlain at all.

Who answers for a Guerlain product bought in India
  1. Guerlain, ParisA Maison of LVMH’s Perfumes & Cosmetics division
  2. No Indian company foundNone in a register name search
  3. No shop, no Indian websiteNeither was found on any source read
  4. Nykaa E-Retail LimitedThe seller named on every Indian listing read

For an Indian buyer, the seller of record is the retailer. Every Nykaa listing we opened carries the line “100% Authentic, directly purchased from Guerlain”, which is the retailer’s statement about its stock. The importer’s details are printed on the carton.

We read four Guerlain product pages in full plus the brand listings, and none showed the importer, the country of origin, the manufacturer or the marketer. Sephora India’s pages do print that block for other brands — it is how the importer behind Givenchy in India can be named — but Sephora India does not stock Guerlain. A brand sold here entirely through companies other than its own is a structure Indian shoppers know from footwear; our Bata audit sets out the best-known case, and our Campus audit the opposite one, where the brand owns the factory.

Worth knowing

No Indian listing we read names the importer or the country of origin; both appear on the carton. Ask the seller for those details before paying, and check the box on delivery.

Check 01

Ask whether the price is a refill or a lipstick

Rouge G is sold as two purchases. The ₹4,500 buys the shade; the case is another ₹4,000 to ₹4,500. Budget ₹8,500 for a first complete lipstick.

Check 02

Check which generation of case you own

Guerlain states that the new Rouge G cases fit only new-generation refills, and the reverse. An older case in your drawer may not save you the ₹4,000 you think it will.

Check 03

Divide the price by the net quantity

KissKiss at ₹5,100 for 1.85 g is ₹2,757 a gram. A 100 ml Mon Guerlain at ₹17,400 is ₹174 a millilitre. The small pack is what lifts the per-gram rate.

Check 04

Read the footnote, not the number

Guerlain prints its test types. A satisfaction test is what users said; an in-vitro test on an ingredient is a result in a dish, not on your face. Both appear on the same page as the headline figures.

Check 05

Read the carton, since the listing will not tell you

The importer’s name and address and the country of origin are mandatory on the pack. No Indian listing we read showed them, so the box is the only place to check.

Common questions

Is Guerlain still family-owned?

No. The Guerlain family owned and ran the house from 1828 until 1994, when LVMH acquired it — 166 years. It is now a Maison of LVMH’s Perfumes and Cosmetics division. The “since 1828” line describes the founding, not the ownership.

Why does a Guerlain lipstick cost ₹4,500 on one page and ₹8,500 elsewhere?

Because ₹4,500 buys a Rouge G refill only. Guerlain’s own page says a first purchase means choosing a shade and a case, and the case costs ₹4,000 to ₹4,500 separately. The complete lipstick is ₹8,500.

Who imports Guerlain into India?

We could not establish it. The four Indian product pages we read in full, plus the brand listings, show the seller but not the importer, the manufacturer or the country of origin. Those details are printed on the carton itself.

Can I buy Guerlain at Sephora India?

Not on 2 September 2026. Sephora India’s Guerlain brand page listed nothing at all, while the same retailer listed 214 Dior items and 117 Givenchy. Nykaa Luxe, with 127 items, is the Indian shelf.

Is Guerlain cheaper in India?

It is close to level. On four products priced on 2 September 2026, Indian prices ran 2% to 7% above American list and 1% to 8% below the French. Strip out 18% GST and India sits 9% to 17% under the American pre-tax price.

Is Guerlain cruelty-free?

Guerlain makes no cruelty-free claim. PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies directory, checked 2 September 2026, lists it as not cruelty-free; that is PETA’s listing. We found no animal-testing statement from Guerlain on the pages read or in its 2024 sustainability report.

The FA take

On price, Guerlain does well in India. Four products priced on one day sat within 7% of American list either way and level with Paris after tax is stripped out, which is notable for an imported Paris house. Its claims footnotes are better than most of the counter’s, and its own sustainability report prints the unflattering 9% all-scopes figure next to the flattering 79%.

Access is the weaker side. Nykaa Luxe was the one Indian retailer we found with priced stock, we found no Indian Guerlain company, shop or website, and the listings we read do not show the importer or country of origin, so the carton and the retailer are the buyer’s reference points.

Buy the fragrance, where ₹174 a millilitre is defensible, and go in knowing that the ₹4,500 Rouge G is half a lipstick — ₹8,500 is the real number, and an old case may not fit the refill.
