KIKO Milano Brand Audit: Owners and India vs Italy Prices

KIKO Milano, the Bergamo makeup brand, is majority-owned by L Catterton and sold in India by Reliance Retail. Where it is made and how Tira prices compare.

An imported Italian makeup brand is supposed to cost more here than at home. KIKO Milano does not. On 2 September 2026 its 3D Hydra Lipgloss carried an Indian MRP of ₹1,290 to ₹1,390, while the brand’s own Italian site listed the same 6.5 ml gloss at €13.99 — about ₹1,566. The gloss is cheaper in India than in Italy, and cheaper than in America too. This audit prices the counter and reads the record behind the label.

The short answer

KIKO Milano is a real Italian brand, founded in Bergamo in 1997 by Antonio and Stefano Percassi. Since August 2024 the majority owner has been L Catterton, a private-equity firm, with the Percassi family keeping a significant minority. Its Indian business belongs to Reliance Retail, which bought it in August 2024 and sells the brand on Tira. On the two products we could match like for like, Indian prices run 11% to 18% below the brand’s own Italian list — checked 2 September 2026.

How it started

Antonio and Stefano Percassi founded KIKO in 1997 and built it out of Bergamo, in Lombardy. The model was fast fashion applied to a makeup counter: deep shade ranges, own-brand stores rather than department-store concessions, and new drops at short intervals. By April 2024 the company reported about €800 million of net revenue for 2023, growth of nearly 20%, and more than 1,100 stores in 66 countries.

The name is the first thing to get right. KIKO is not from Milan. Its own release places the headquarters in Bergamo, roughly 50 kilometres away, and names two founding brothers. Tira’s Indian brand page, read on 2 September 2026, gives Milan as the founding city and names one founder; the company’s own release is the source used here.

One brand, two owners
  1. Antonio and Stefano PercassiFound KIKO in Bergamo, 1997
  2. The Percassi familySole owners to 2024; 1,100-plus stores in 66 countries
  3. L CattertonMajority stake agreed 26 April 2024, completed that August

Since August 2024, then, the majority owner has been a private-equity firm, with the family as the minority partner.

L Catterton is a consumer-focused private-equity firm, not an operating group, and LVMH holds a 40% stake in the firm itself. That is the whole basis of the “LVMH-backed” shorthand in headlines; LVMH does not own KIKO. The companies’ own release said only that L Catterton was taking a majority and the Percassi family retaining “a significant minority stake”. Italian trade press put the stake at 70% and the valuation above $1.5 billion — neither number appears in either company’s statement. Antonio Percassi stayed on as President and Simone Dominici, chief executive since March 2022, kept the job. Italian reports of the August 2024 completion also record a €500 million bond placed to finance the deal.

What they actually make

The Indian range on Tira ran to 1,101 items on 2 September 2026: lipsticks, glosses and lip markers, fluid and stick foundations, concealers, primers, setting mists, bronzing drops, eye pencils and brushes. Both hero products we read on the brand’s own site declare their origin plainly — “Made in Italy” on the 3D Hydra Lipgloss, “Prodotto in Italia” on the Smart Fusion Lipstick. That is two of two pages checked.

The brand also publishes full ingredient lists on those pages, which several Indian direct-to-consumer labels still do not. What no Indian listing we read carries is the other half of the declaration: the importer’s name and address, and the country of origin printed for the Indian buyer. Our Campus audit shows why that line matters even when a brand is open about where it manufactures — the pack is the document, not the web page.

Worth knowing

KIKO’s own pages declare Made in Italy on both heroes we read, but no Indian listing we read names the importer or the country of origin. Ask the shop to show you the declaration on the box before you assume the Indian stock matches.

The claims deserve their own reading. The 3D Hydra Lipgloss page says one is “sold every second worldwide”, footnoted on the same page as “based on units sold in 2024” — a statistic the company calculated about itself, with no auditor named. The same page promises hydration “that lasts up to 10 hours” and lip volume that “appears amplified after 28 days of use”, footnoted only as a “clinical and instrumental test”, with no panel size, no laboratory and no report published. “Dermatologically tested” appears with no tester named. A lip marker and the Unlimited Stylo lipstick carry 10-hour wear claims on the Italian category page, which does not cite a test method for them.

What KIKO Milano costs in India

Here is the finding that upends the usual assumption. Every figure below was checked on 2 September 2026, converting euros at the European Central Bank reference rate of ₹111.9595 shown for 21 August 2026, and dollars at ₹95.38 for 28 August 2026.

Italy list, 3D Hydra Lipgloss 6.5 ml
€13.99, about ₹1,566
Indian MRP, same gloss
₹1,290 to ₹1,390
Gap
11% to 18% cheaper in India
Checked on
2 September 2026

The lipstick tells the same story. Smart Fusion, 3 g, lists at €4.99 in Italy — about ₹559 — and carries an Indian MRP of ₹490, selling at ₹441 on several shades. That is 12% under the Italian list at MRP and 21% under it at the price actually charged. The gloss also undercuts the American price: $14.00 on KIKO’s own US site works out to ₹1,335, so the ₹1,290 Indian MRP sits about 3% below that too.

An Italian gloss listed at €13.99 in Italy sells for ₹1,290 in India — the import premium everyone assumes is simply not there.

Read that gap honestly. Italian shelf prices include 22% value-added tax and Indian MRPs include 18% GST, so before tax the difference narrows, though on these two products the direction holds. The sample is two products matched like for like plus one American cross-check, not a catalogue, and KIKO Italy runs frequent multi-buy offers that can push the effective Italian price below list. What the numbers do rule out is the assumption that a European brand automatically charges Indians a premium for the same tube.

Per gram and per millilitre, the counter rearranges itself again.

ProductPrice, 2 September 2026Per gram or ml
Highlighting Effect Fluid Concealer 02, 2 ml₹950 MRP₹475 per ml
3D Hydra Lipgloss, 6.5 ml₹1,290–1,390 MRP₹198–214 per ml
Smart Fusion Lipstick, 3 g₹490 MRP, ₹441 selling₹163 per g, ₹147 at selling price
Power Shake Bronze Bliss Drops, 30 ml₹1,690 selling₹56 per ml
Matte Face Base, 30 ml₹1,290 MRP, ₹967 selling₹43 per ml
Prime & Fix Refreshing Mist Primer, 70 ml₹1,490 MRP₹21 per ml

The concealer costs eleven times the face base per millilitre, because it comes in a 2 ml tube. Small packs carry the steepest rates on every beauty counter, and this one is no exception. Note also that Tira showed roughly 10% off many products on the day we checked, so MRP is not what you pay — the same MRP-versus-real-price gap our Sparx audit documents in footwear.

Who KIKO Milano is actually for

This counter suits the buyer who wants Italian-made makeup without prestige pricing and is willing to work in millilitres. A 3 g lipstick made in Italy at ₹490 is priced against Indian budget brands, not imported ones, and that is the most surprising number here.

It suits the shade-hunter too, since deep ranges are the point of the fast-fashion model. It suits nobody looking for a certified cruelty-free label, because there is not one. And the buyer chasing value should skip the 2 ml concealer at ₹475 per millilitre and put the money into a 30 ml base at ₹43.

Reputation and controversies

On animal testing, read the certifier rather than any badge. PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies directory carries a company page for KIKO Milano stating that the brand “may not be cruelty-free” and that the company “hasn’t signed PETA’s statement of assurance to join the gold standard for cruelty-free certifications and be listed in our database”. That is the absence of a certification, which is not the same as PETA’s affirmative “does test on animals” listing given to some other brands. Round-ups placing KIKO among cruelty-free labels are not supported by the certifier’s own database. Animal testing of cosmetics has been illegal in India since 2014 in any case.

Outside Europe, BeautyMatter reported in October 2025 that the brand had three stores in the United States and was expanding there.

Buying it in India

KIKO entered India in 2016 through a joint venture between Italy’s Percassi Group and the Delhi company DLF Brands. By mid-2024 it had about ten stores across New Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Lucknow. In August 2024 Reliance Retail acquired the India business, kept those stores and put the brand on Tira, its beauty platform. Press reports put the deal at roughly ₹100 crore, a figure neither company has confirmed. Nothing on the record says KIKO ever left India, so this was a change of hands rather than a re-entry, and the legal form of the transaction is not public.

KIKO in India
  • 2016Enters through a Percassi–DLF Brands joint venture
  • Mid-2024About ten stores across seven cities
  • August 2024Reliance Retail buys the India business; launch on Tira
  • January 2026South India debut at Forum Mall, Kochi
  • April 2026Hyderabad store, operated by Reliance Retail Ventures

The Italian brand is owned globally by a private-equity firm and sold here by India’s largest retailer.

Buying it means buying from Reliance, one way or another: the brand is sold exclusively through Tira and its own outlets. That is a narrow channel, which is useful — a KIKO product on a marketplace stall at an implausible price has no obvious route to that stall. Our Bata audit covers the same structure in footwear, where the global name and the Indian operating company are two different things with two different balance sheets.

Check 01

Read the declaration on the box

An imported cosmetic pack carries the importer’s name and address and the country of origin. The online listings we read did not show them, so the carton in your hand is the place to check.

Check 02

Divide by the millilitres

The 2 ml concealer at ₹950 costs ₹475 per millilitre; the 30 ml base at ₹1,290 costs ₹43. The small tube is always the expensive one, whatever the sticker says.

Check 03

Compare against the Italian site, not the American one

KIKO publishes its Italian list prices openly. On the two products we matched, the Indian MRP was 11% to 18% below them — so a “special import price” pitch is worth questioning.

Check 04

Buy through the official channel

The brand is sold in India through Tira and its own stores. Stock appearing well outside that channel has no documented route to it, and no declaration you can verify.

Check 05

Read the footnote behind wear hours

The 10-hour hydration and 28-day volume claims are footnoted on the brand’s page as a “clinical and instrumental test”; the page does not publish a panel size or laboratory. Try a tester where you can.

Common questions

Is KIKO Milano actually from Milan?

No. The company’s own release says it was founded in 1997 by Antonio and Stefano Percassi and is headquartered in Bergamo, about 50 kilometres from Milan. “Milano” is part of the brand name.

Who owns KIKO Milano?

L Catterton, a consumer private-equity firm, has held the majority since the deal completed in August 2024; the Percassi family retains a significant minority. LVMH holds 40% of L Catterton itself, which is where “LVMH-backed” comes from — LVMH does not own KIKO.

Is KIKO Milano cheaper in India than in Europe?

On the two products we matched like for like on 2 September 2026, yes. The 3D Hydra Lipgloss carried an Indian MRP of ₹1,290–1,390 against €13.99 in Italy, about ₹1,566, and the Smart Fusion Lipstick ₹490 against €4.99, about ₹559.

Is KIKO Milano cruelty-free?

It holds no PETA certification. PETA’s own directory states that the brand “may not be cruelty-free” and has not signed its statement of assurance. Animal testing of cosmetics has been illegal in India since 2014, so Indian-sold stock is covered by that law regardless.

Where is KIKO Milano sold in India?

Through Tira, Reliance Retail’s beauty platform, and the brand’s own stores in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Kochi and Hyderabad. Reliance Retail bought the India business in August 2024, and no current total store count is published.

Are KIKO products made in Italy?

Both product pages we read on the brand’s own site declare it — “Made in Italy” on the lipgloss, “Prodotto in Italia” on the lipstick. No Indian listing we read names a country of origin, so for your specific unit the printed pack is the answer.

The FA take

KIKO Milano is the rare imported brand that does not make Indian buyers pay for the passport. On the two products we could match like for like on 2 September 2026, Indian MRPs sat 11% to 18% below the brand’s own Italian list, and the gloss undercut the American price by about 3%. A 3 g lipstick made in Italy, at ₹490, is priced where Indian budget brands live. Full ingredient lists and a plain origin declaration on both heroes we read are more disclosure than much of this counter offers.

A few things are worth knowing first. Since August 2024 the majority owner has been L Catterton, with the Percassi family in the minority. The hour numbers and the 28-day volume claim are footnoted to a “clinical and instrumental test” whose panel and laboratory the page does not publish. There is no PETA cruelty-free certification. And the 2 ml concealer, at ₹475 per millilitre, is the poorest value on the counter by unit price.

Buy the ₹490 lipstick and the 30 ml base on their per-millilitre maths, ignore the small tubes, and stop assuming an Italian label costs more here — on this counter it costs less.
