Lancôme Brand Audit: L’Oréal-Owned, Near US Prices, 15 Shades

Lancôme, owned by L'Oréal since 1964, cost 11% below to 5% above US list in India on 2 September 2026, with 15 foundation shades against 55 in America.

Lancôme is sold in India by L’Oréal India, the same Mumbai company that sells L’Oréal Paris and Maybelline. On three like-for-like products checked on 2 September 2026, its Indian prices ran from 11% below to 5% above the American list.

This audit checks the prices, reads the numbers printed beside the serum claims, and counts what actually reaches the Indian shelf.

The short answer

Lancôme was founded in France in 1935 and sold to L’Oréal in 1964. On three like-for-like heroes checked on 2 September 2026, Indian prices ran 11% below to 5% above US list, and 11% to 25% below once 18% GST is stripped out, while sitting 26% to 30% under the French list. The Indian shade range is narrower: 15 foundation shades against 55 in America, and four lipstick shades against nineteen.

How it started

Armand Petitjean founded Lancôme in France in 1935. He had worked for François Coty, was already past fifty, and showed his first five perfumes at the Brussels Universal Expo that year. During the war he set up the École Lancôme to train women in cosmetology and selling.

Then, in 1964, Petitjean’s son sold the company to L’Oréal. It has belonged to that group for 62 years — more than twice as long as it was independent. L’Oréal’s own Lancôme brand page calls it “the first luxury beauty brand”; the 1964 acquisition is set out in a separate L’Oréal article and on the French luxury federation’s members page.

Sixty-two years inside L’Oréal, against twenty-nine as an independent house.

The Indian chapter is short and it has a gap in the middle. Lancôme was here, was withdrawn — the trade press at the time reported the reason as weak demand for high-end luxury products — and came back on 28 June 2022, sold only through Sephora’s seventeen Indian stores and website. Reporters put the absence at roughly five years; no exit date has ever been published, so treat that duration as their estimate.

The parent is worth sizing. L’Oréal Luxe took €15,595.1 million of revenue in 2025 at a 22.4% operating margin — 35% of L’Oréal’s sales and the group’s largest division by operating profit, on a year that was flat in reported terms. L’Oréal India, the company that actually imports and sells here, reported ₹5,979.2 crore of revenue and ₹597.5 crore of net profit for the year to March 2025, across a stated 26 brands.

What they actually make

Skincare, makeup and fragrance. In India the readable line runs from Advanced Génifique and Rénergie in skincare, through Teint Idole foundations, L’Absolu Rouge and Lip Idôle lipsticks and balms, Hypnôse and Lash Idôle mascaras, to the Idôle and La Vie Est Belle fragrances.

For Advanced Génifique, the brand’s American and French websites each publish figures for the serum. Both pages were read on 2 September 2026.

Génifique claimAmerican pageFrench page
Radiance+27%+52%
Smoothness+21%+43%
Evenness+42%+42%
Fine lines−42%−42%
Wrinkles−46%−46%

Read on lancome-usa.com and lancome.fr, 2 September 2026.

Three figures are the same on both pages and two are not, and each page footnotes its figures to a different study. The American page runs its eight figures under a header reading “proven on 8 clinical skin parameters after 8 weeks”, and the asterisk refers to “multi-ethnic self-assessment results in a 4-week consumer study of 1,127 women”. The French page footnotes its five figures to a clinical study of 34 women over eight weeks.

Both statements are the brand’s, and this page reports them as published. The French page separately claims that 99% of women who tried the serum recommend it; no base is published beside that figure.

On 2 September 2026 a Teint Idole foundation cost ₹4,500 in India, 11% under the American list and 26% under the French.

The makeup claims are footnoted in different ways. Teint Idole’s “99% found their shade” is footnoted to a consumer test of 252 people, while “flexes with up to 10,000 daily facial movements” is footnoted to Lancôme’s own calculation based on typical speech. Hypnôse Drama Waterproof claims 14 times more volume in America and 17 times in France, with 48-hour hold claimed only on the French page and no panel size published for any mascara claim in either market. L’Absolu Rouge Drama Matte carries “97.9% agree full coverage” with no base stated.

The shade count is the larger difference for an Indian buyer. Teint Idole runs 55 shades in America, 48 in France and 15 in India. L’Absolu Rouge Drama Matte runs 19 shades in America and 19 in France — and four in India. An Indian buyer gets 27% of the American foundation range and 21% of the lipstick range, at roughly the American price.

Worth knowing

None of the four Indian Lancôme listings read on 2 September 2026 showed an importer, a manufacturer or a country of origin. Read the declaration on the carton before you pay.

What Lancôme costs in India

Every Indian figure below is a retailer’s, read on 2 September 2026 from Tira and Nykaa Luxe. American prices come from lancome-usa.com and French ones from lancome.fr the same day, converted at ₹95.38 to the dollar and ₹110.62 to the euro on Federal Reserve rates for 28 August 2026.

Strip the tax and the picture sharpens. Indian MRPs include 18% GST, French prices include 20% value-added tax, and American shelf prices exclude sales tax altogether. Before tax, the three products sit 25%, 11% and 11% below their American prices. Lancôme is cheaper in India than in the United States on every hero we could compare properly.

Imports are not lightly taxed: tariff databases put basic customs duty on imported foundations, lipsticks and mascaras at 20%, plus a 10% social welfare surcharge on the duty and 18% IGST — around 44% of the value declared at the border, of which the IGST part is creditable. Duty is charged on that declared value, not on an American shelf price, so an Indian MRP is struck off wholesale value plus a chosen margin. Currency does some of the work too, at ₹95.38 to the dollar.

Per unit, the lip products are the most expensive buy. The Drama Matte lipstick is ₹1,029 a gram and the Lip Idôle Butterglow balm ₹1,167 to ₹1,250 a gram, against ₹19.50 a millilitre for a 200 ml cleansing foam — a factor of sixty. One genuine saving exists on the line and it is worth naming: the 100 ml Idôle fragrance refill at ₹7,395 works out to ₹74 a millilitre against ₹89 for the bottle, a real 17% cut for buying the pouch. Reading the unit price rather than the sticker is the same habit we apply to the MRP gap in our Liberty audit.

One product cannot be compared like for like. Advanced Génifique sells in India as a 30 ml pack at ₹6,300, while the only American and French packs on sale are 100 ml, and larger packs are normally cheaper per millilitre. The serum stays out of the range above for that reason.

Who Lancôme is actually for

On its makeup, this is a premium line rather than a luxury one by Indian pricing. The nine makeup products we could price cluster between ₹2,150 for a lip gloss and ₹3,900 for a blush, with only the ₹4,500 foundation crossing ₹4,000. The skincare and fragrance are a different matter — ₹6,300 for the serum, ₹9,700 for a night cream, ₹12,000 for the Rénergie triple serum.

It suits a buyer who wants a French luxury name at close to what an American pays, and who does not need the shade range. It does not suit a deep or a very fair complexion, because the Indian foundation assortment is 15 shades wide and the lipstick assortment four. And it does not suit anyone who wants to read the pack before buying online, because no Indian listing we saw carried the declaration. A global brand fronted here by a separate Indian company is a structure shoppers already know from footwear; our Bata audit covers the best-known example, and our Campus audit the opposite case, where the brand owns its factory.

Reputation and controversies

Lancôme’s Indian court record includes decisions both for and against it. It won three decided trade mark matters: the Delhi High Court decreed its suit on 27 January 2015 against a manufacturer selling “LANCOM” lipsticks, granting a permanent injunction, ₹1 lakh in damages and delivery-up of the goods; a Delhi district court decreed a second suit on 16 March 2018 with ₹50,000 in damages, after a court-appointed commissioner recovered counterfeit product from a shop in Indore; and a third on 11 December 2019 against a Delhi retailer who could not document where his stock came from, again with ₹50,000 in damages.

It also lost one, and that belongs here too. On 24 August 2015 a Delhi district court dismissed Lancôme’s suit over the mark POEME, holding that infringement had not been proved. The court listed defects in the evidence, including incomplete witness testimony, electronic documents filed without the certificate the Evidence Act requires and a French certificate with no English translation. No injunction, damages or costs were awarded.

On advertising, the record is exactly one item and it needs stating precisely. ASCI’s published complaint-outcomes database carries one Lancôme outcome, read on 2 September 2026: upheld, 19 July 2023, concerning an Instagram post by an influencer promoting the brand’s range without the disclosure label that marks a paid partnership. That is a labelling failure. It is not a finding that any Lancôme product claim was false, and it should never be reported as one. ASCI is the advertising industry’s own self-regulatory body rather than a statutory regulator, the decision went to one post in the form it then carried, and nobody has ruled on what the brand publishes today.

On animal testing, PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies directory carries a Lancôme entry reading that Lancôme “does test on animals”. L’Oréal’s own statement is that since 1989 it has not tested the safety of its products on animals, 14 years before regulations required it. Animal testing of cosmetics has been illegal in India since 2014.

Buying it in India

The authorised footprint is narrow. Nykaa Luxe listed 51 Lancôme products on 2 September 2026 and Tira carried the brand with individual product pages; Nykaa publishes three physical counters, at Churchgate in Mumbai and at Chanakya Mall and DLF Saket in Delhi, offering short shade-finder and skin-check services. Myntra and Tata CLiQ Luxury also index the brand. Sephora India’s Lancôme page carried no products at all on the day we looked — which may be a stock-out rather than an exit, so read it as an observation with a date on it, not a departure.

Check 01

Read the importer line on the carton

Every one of these is imported, and the pack must carry the importer’s name and address and the country of origin. No listing we read showed them, so the box in your hand is the only place to check.

Check 02

Compare the footnote, not the percentage

Serum and makeup claims carry footnotes that name the kind of study behind them, such as a consumer self-assessment or a clinical study, and the panel size. Read the footnote alongside the figure.

Check 03

Match the shade in person if you can

Fifteen foundation shades reach India against 55 in America. If your depth or undertone is at either end of the range, the Indian assortment may simply not contain it — and three published counters is a short list.

Check 04

Buy the refill on fragrance

The 100 ml Idôle refill at ₹7,395 is ₹74 a millilitre against ₹89 for the bottle. That is a genuine 17% saving, and it is the only real per-unit discount in the Indian range.

Check 05

Treat a deep discount as a warning

Courts have decreed Lancôme’s suits over counterfeit product. If a price sits far below the authorised retailers’, ask where the goods came from.

Common questions

Who owns Lancôme?

L’Oréal S.A. has owned it since 1964, when Armand Petitjean’s son sold the company. It is a brand inside the L’Oréal Luxe division, not a company of its own.

Is Lancôme cheaper in India?

On the three products we priced like-for-like on 2 September 2026, yes against France — 26% to 30% cheaper — and roughly level with America, running from 11% below to 5% above. Strip out 18% GST and India is 11% to 25% below the American price.

How many Lancôme shades reach India?

Fewer than abroad. On 2 September 2026 Teint Idole Ultra Wear ran 15 shades in India against 55 in America and 48 in France, and L’Absolu Rouge Drama Matte ran four in India against 19 in each of the other two markets.

Has Lancôme been pulled up for false claims in India?

No. The single ASCI outcome on the record, upheld on 19 July 2023, concerns an influencer’s Instagram post that lacked a paid-partnership disclosure. It is a labelling finding against the advertising, not a ruling that a product claim was untrue.

Is Lancôme cruelty-free?

PETA’s directory lists it among companies that do test on animals, checked 2 September 2026. L’Oréal states that it has not tested the safety of its products on animals since 1989. Animal testing of cosmetics has been illegal in India since 2014.

How long has Lancôme been in India?

Not continuously. It was withdrawn, was absent for about five years by the trade press’s reckoning, and was relaunched on 28 June 2022 through Sephora alone.

The FA take

On the products compared, Lancôme costs an Indian buyer about what an American pays, or less. A foundation at ₹4,500 is 11% under the American list and 26% under the French one, and 25% under America before tax.

The trade-off is choice. Fifteen foundation shades reach India against 55 in America, and four lipstick shades against nineteen — you may simply not find your colour. On skincare, the price is the bigger question: the serum sells here only as a 30 ml pack at ₹6,300, so it cannot be set against the 100 ml packs abroad.

Worth buying at ₹4,500 if the shade exists for you — and weigh the ₹6,300 for 30 ml of serum against the per-millilitre price before you pay.
