NARS Brand Audit: Japanese Owner, Shoppers Stop Importer

NARS has been Japanese-owned since 2000 and is imported into India by a Shoppers Stop subsidiary. Its hero products run 8% to 12% below United States list price.

A French make-up artist put his surname on twelve lipsticks at Barneys New York in 1994. Thirty-two years later, the company that owns those lipsticks is listed in Tokyo, and the company that brings them into India is a wholly owned subsidiary of Shoppers Stop.

NARS is one of the few imported prestige brands that costs less here than in the United States. It is also the rare counter brand that prints the panel size next to the number it is claiming.

The short answer

NARS was founded in New York in 1994 and has been wholly owned by Shiseido, the Tokyo-listed Japanese group, since 2000. In India it is imported by Global SS Beauty Brands Limited, a wholly owned Shoppers Stop subsidiary. Its four hero products run 8% to 12% below United States list price, and 22% to 25% below once GST is stripped out. Prices checked 2 September 2026.

How it started

François Nars, a French make-up artist working in New York, launched the brand in 1994 with twelve lipsticks on one counter at Barneys. It grew into a colour house rather than a skincare one, and that is still what it is.

In 2000, Shiseido bought the brand from Agora Cosmetics Inc. Women’s Wear Daily reported the deal at the time and recorded the price as an undisclosed sum. The same report puts the scale of what changed hands: 240 colour products, 106 doors in 16 countries, and wholesale sales of $10 million in 1999.

That $10 million figure matters, because a much larger number circulates online. A price of $1.3 billion is repeated on secondary sites with nothing primary behind it, and it sits badly against a brand doing $10 million of wholesale sales the year before it sold. This audit prints no price.

Whose company NARS is
  1. François NarsFounds the brand in New York, 1994
  2. Agora Cosmetics IncHolds the brand until 2000
  3. Shiseido Company, LimitedBuys it in 2000 for an undisclosed sum; owns it outright today

The founder sold the company twenty-six years ago and holds no stake in it. Shiseido described him as founder and creative director in November 2016, when he received France’s Légion d’Honneur. No later company statement we could find repeats the title, so this audit does not put it in the present tense.

The owner is a 154-year-old Tokyo house that began as Japan’s first Western-style pharmacy in 1872. In the year ended 31 December 2025 it reported net sales of ¥970.0 billion and a net loss of ¥40.7 billion attributable to owners. NARS grew 3% like-for-like across that year. The brand is one of the healthier things in the portfolio, not a passenger on a healthy one — though Shiseido discloses no revenue figure for NARS itself, so nobody outside the company can size it.

What they actually make

NARS is a complexion and colour brand: foundation, concealer, blush, bronzer, tinted moisturiser, eyeshadow and the cream stick called The Multiple. Counted on the brand’s own pages on 2 September 2026, the Radiant Creamy Concealer runs to 30 shades, Sheer Glow Foundation to 40 and the Light Reflecting Advanced Skincare Foundation to 50. One foundation shade is named Punjab, and both Sephora India and Tira merchandise it on their Indian brand pages.

The interesting part is how the brand talks about its products. Where most of this counter prints a wear-time number and offers nothing behind it, NARS publishes the basis and the panel size beside almost every claim. The concealer’s five agreement figures — 97% lightweight, 95% smoother skin, 93% brighter eye area, 92% less visible fatigue, 90% creaseless — all rest on a stated United States perception study of 60 women over two weeks. Sheer Glow’s four figures rest on 24 women over four weeks. The Light Reflecting foundation’s “+93% more even skin tone” is stated as immediate results on 31 women.

That is genuinely better disclosure than the rest of the counter offers, and it deserves saying. It also invites the obvious arithmetic.

A “96% agree” from a panel of 24 people means twenty-three people said yes.

These are perception studies — people answering a questionnaire — except the two labelled clinical on the Light Reflecting foundation, for which no laboratory or report is published. “Dermatologist tested” on Sheer Glow means a test happened; it does not mean it passed, and it is not a doctor’s recommendation.

Nobody’s name appears as the manufacturer. The Indian statutory block read on 2 September 2026 carries importer, marketer and country of origin only — no factory, no licence number. That is normal for imported prestige makeup, but it is a real difference from a brand like Campus, whose audit can name the plants because the company owns them.

Worth knowing

The Indian listing for the tinted moisturiser reads SPF 30 PA+++. The brand’s own page for the same product claims Broad Spectrum SPF 30 only, with no PA rating and no published test report. Treat the PA number as the retailer’s copy until the box in your hand says otherwise.

What NARS costs in India

Every conversion below uses one rate: ₹95.3800 to the US dollar, from the Federal Reserve H.10 release of 31 August 2026 carrying rates for 28 August 2026. Indian prices come from Sephora India and Tira, both read on 2 September 2026, against list prices on the brand’s United States site the same day.

The other three land in the same place: the concealer ₹3,100 against $36, the Light Reflecting foundation ₹4,800 against $55, the tinted moisturiser ₹4,300 against a $50 list — 10%, 8% and 10% cheaper here.

Strip the tax and the gap widens. Indian MRPs include 18% GST while American shelf prices exclude sales tax, so the four pre-tax Indian prices sit 22% to 25% below the American pre-tax price. Tariff databases carry 20% basic customs duty on cosmetics under this heading, plus a 10% surcharge on that duty and 18% IGST. Indian prices here are set off transfer values and a chosen margin, not by stacking duty on an American retail price.

The sharper lesson is inside the range, not across the border.

The mini concealer costs almost twice per millilitre what the full size costs. The same brand runs from ₹86 a millilitre to ₹1,867 a gram depending on which box you pick up, a spread of more than twenty times. Minis are the expensive way to buy NARS, and the low ticket price is what hides that — the same MRP-against-real-cost trap our Metro and Bata audits describe on the footwear side.

Who NARS is actually for

NARS is for a buyer willing to spend ₹3,000 to ₹4,800 on a single base product. On the makeup bands used across this site, the core line at its typical Indian selling price of about ₹3,500 lands in the premium tier, with the 30 ml foundations pushing into luxury pricing.

Two things make it a defensible buy at that money. Indian pricing is genuinely below American list rather than above it, which is unusual here. And the shade ranges are deep enough — 40 and 50 on the two foundations — that a mid-to-deep Indian skin tone is not asked to make do.

Two things count against it. The claims are substantiated by panels of two dozen to five dozen people, which is thin evidence dressed in a confident percentage. And if animal testing decides your purchases, this brand does not clear that bar, by its own account.

Three years, three boutiques and four retail partners is a careful entry, not a land grab.

Reputation and controversies

The brand marketed itself as cruelty-free until June 2017. On 27 June 2017, entering mainland China, it published a statement saying it does not test on animals or ask others to do so on its behalf, “except where required by law”, and that it had decided to make NARS available in China. Trade coverage recorded that it could no longer claim universal cruelty-free status, and a consumer boycott followed.

The customer-service page carried the same wording on 2 September 2026, and PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies directory lists NARS under Companies to Avoid with the line “Nars Cosmetics does test on animals” — a category that covers selling in regions where testing is legally required. Animal testing of cosmetics has been illegal in India since 21 May 2014, so the point is what the brand does elsewhere.

Buying it in India

Check 01

Read the importer line on the box

An Indian-channel NARS product carries an importer’s name and address — on the listing read for this audit, Global SS Beauty Brands Limited, Umang Tower, Malad West, Mumbai. No importer line means the box did not come through an Indian import channel.

Check 02

Compare the MRP across two authorised shelves

Sheer Glow was ₹4,200 and Light Reflecting ₹4,800 on both Sephora India and Tira on 2 September 2026. A foundation offered far below ₹4,200 is priced outside every authorised listing we read.

Check 03

Do the per-millilitre sum before you pick the mini

Divide the price by the net quantity on the pack. The 1.4 ml concealer works out at ₹1,000 per ml against ₹517 for the 6 ml. Buy the mini to test a shade, not to save money.

Check 04

Look for the panel size beside the percentage

NARS prints it, which most of this counter does not. When you see “97% agree”, find the line saying how many people and for how long. Sixty women for two weeks is not a clinical trial.

Check 05

Trust the pack over the listing

One Sephora India page for the concealer headlined 6 ml while its own declaration block said 15 gram. Retailer declarations are typed by the retailer; the net quantity on the carton is the one to go by.

Common questions

Is NARS a French brand?

No. François Nars is French, but he founded the brand in New York in 1994 and Shiseido of Japan has owned it since 2000. The declaration on its Indian listing gives the country of origin as the United States.

Who imports NARS into India?

Global SS Beauty Brands Limited, CIN U52100MH1995PLC095115, of Umang Tower, Malad West, Mumbai — a wholly owned subsidiary of Shoppers Stop, not of Shiseido. A Shiseido India Private Limited exists, but the register classifies it under technical testing and analysis with ₹1.21 crore paid up.

Is NARS cruelty-free?

No. It was marketed that way until June 2017, when it entered China and said in its own statement that it complies with local law where testing is required. PETA lists it under Companies to Avoid.

Is NARS cheaper in India than in the United States?

Yes, on the four hero products checked on 2 September 2026. Indian MRPs ran 8% to 12% below United States list at ₹95.3800 to the dollar, and 22% to 25% below once the 18% GST is stripped out.

Did Shiseido pay $1.3 billion for NARS?

There is no primary source for it. The trade report of the 2000 deal says the sum was undisclosed and puts the brand’s 1999 wholesale sales at $10 million, which makes $1.3 billion implausible.

The FA take

NARS is the honest end of the imported prestige counter. Indian MRPs run 8% to 12% under United States list and 22% to 25% under it pre-tax, the two big foundations carry 40 and 50 shades, and the brand publishes the panel size beside its percentages when almost nobody else on this shelf does. At ₹4,200 for 30 ml you are paying ₹140 a millilitre for claims you can at least audit.

What deserves scepticism is the weight those claims can carry. Sixty women, twenty-four women, thirty-one women — perception panels, not efficacy trials, with no report published for the two studies labelled clinical. And the minis are a trap: ₹1,400 for 1.4 ml is ₹1,000 a millilitre, twice the full size, for the same concealer.

Buy the 30 ml foundation, skip the mini, and treat “97% agree” as sixty people in a questionnaire.
