Breitling Brand Audit: India Prices 19.5% Below Switzerland

Breitling audit: on 31 August 2026 its Indian MRP was the Swiss franc price times 105, 19.51% below Switzerland after tax. Owners, movements and buying checks.
Breitling brand audit by FashionAudit: Breitling logo over a large stainless steel aviation chronograph watch with a slide-rule bezel

On 31 August 2026 Breitling listed a chronograph in India at ₹9,03,000. Strip the tax off, and the same watch was 19.51% cheaper here than in Zurich — not a rounding difference, a fifth of the price. This audit covers who owns Breitling, which of its watches use its own movement and which use a bought-in ETA base, and what to check before buying in India.

The short answer

Breitling’s Indian MRP is its Swiss franc list price multiplied by exactly 105 — checked across more than eighty references on 31 August 2026, with no exception. Remove 18% GST here and 8.1% VAT there, and India lands 19.51% below Switzerland on every watch and about 19.7% below the United States on steel. On these figures, import duty does not lift Breitling’s Indian prices above Swiss ones.

How it started

Léon Breitling opened his workshop in the Swiss Jura in 1884, and three generations of the family ran it. The Navitimer arrived in 1952 for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, with a circular slide rule on the bezel for in-flight sums. The Chronomat line as sold today came later, in 1983. Ownership has changed hands several times since the family era.

  2. The Schneider familyOwners until April 2017; Théodore Schneider was chief executive
  3. CVC Capital PartnersBuys 80% on 29 April 2017, reportedly near €800 million
  4. Partners Group25% in 2021, then control in 2022 at a $4.5 billion valuation
  5. House of BrandsFrom 17 April 2026: Breitling, Universal Genève and Gallet

Breitling is often described as one of the last independent Swiss watchmakers. CVC used the same phrase when it announced its purchase of 80% of the company in April 2017.

CVC will work to help shape the future of one of Switzerland’s last independent watch manufacturers.

“Independent” here means one thing only: not owned by Richemont, LVMH or the Swatch Group. It does not mean family-owned or self-financed: Breitling is owned by private-equity investors.

In April 2026 the company reorganised as House of Brands, holding Breitling, Universal Genève and Gallet. Georges Kern, who arrived from IWC in 2017, moved up to run the group; Jean-Marc Pontroué, Panerai’s chief executive until March 2026, now runs Breitling.

What they actually make

Breitling’s first movement of its own arrived in 2009 — the calibre it calls the Manufacture Caliber 01 and everyone else calls the B01. It is an automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch, good for about 70 hours off a full wind. The B19 perpetual calendar sits on the same base and holds 96 hours.

Not every Breitling has one. The cheaper mechanical watches run bought-in Swiss bases, and in India that is the biggest single step in the price list.

B01Breitling’s own chronograph, 70-hour reserveFive years

Calibre 32An ETA 2893-2 GMT base, 42 hoursTwo years
Calibre 17An ETA 2824-2 three-hander, 38 hoursTwo years

The accuracy claim is borne out at the cheap end. Breitling says every movement it sells is COSC-certified to −4/+6 seconds a day. The watch specialist SJX, examining the Navitimer Automatic GMT 41, records a COSC-certified Calibre 32 that is “actually an ETA 2893-2”. COSC is the standard chronometer test; Breitling does not publish a stricter in-house standard.

One fact undoes the idea that Swiss brands are sealed rivals. In April 2017 Breitling and Tudor swapped movements publicly, both ways. Tudor reworked Breitling’s B01 into its MT5813; Breitling took Tudor’s MT5612, badged it B20 and fitted it to the Superocean Heritage II.

What Breitling costs in India

Breitling publishes rupee prices on its own India-English site, which most Swiss brands at this level do not. Every Indian price divides by 105 to a whole franc figure, and that figure is its Swiss list price. Take the Chronomat B01 Chronograph 42, at CHF 8,600 in Switzerland and $9,900 in the United States, converted at Federal Reserve rates for 21 August 2026.

That is not a special offer. Because the Indian grid is a fixed multiple of the Swiss one, the figure repeats to two decimal places on every reference. The gap against the United States wanders, because Breitling’s dollar price is not a fixed multiple of its franc.

Read the last row against the rest. Steel and titanium run 17% to 24% under the American price. Gold nearly closes to parity, because Breitling charges roughly the same number in dollars as in francs on gold while adding a 15% to 22% dollar premium on steel. If you want the Indian advantage, buy the steel one.

What about import duty? Swiss watches enter India under a headline rate that has been falling since the India–EFTA trade agreement took effect on 1 October 2025, but the rate is the wrong thing to watch. Duty is charged on the landed transfer value, not the price on the tag, so a mid-teens rate adds a few percentage points to the shelf price, not its face value. On Breitling’s own price lists, duty does not make the Indian price higher than the Swiss one.

Kapoor Watch Company quotes MRP to the rupee; Swiss Paradise in Mumbai, an authorised retailer, is about 1.9% under it.

Who Breitling is actually for

The range starts at ₹3,36,000 with the Endurance Pro 38, a SuperQuartz sports watch — a battery watch, not a mechanical one. If the appeal of a Swiss watch is the mechanism, that is not the door to walk through, and our comparison of analogue and digital watches explains why the distinction matters.

The mechanical entry is the Avenger Automatic 42 at about ₹4,62,000, on the Calibre 17 — an ETA 2824-2 with two years of cover. The Avenger B01 Chronograph 44 is ₹6,93,000, with Breitling’s own 70-hour chronograph and five years. That gap is ₹2.31 lakh, and the movement is most of what it buys.

For anyone stepping up from a quartz Fastrack or Sonata, the Swiss name and the Swiss brand’s own movement are two separate purchases. Our watch coverage sets out the rungs in between. And do not buy the Navitimer for its slide rule alone: it multiplies and divides, and it times nothing.

Reputation and controversies

We found no court judgment, regulator’s order, penalty or concluded settlement against Breitling on the public record as at 31 August 2026. The owners’ reported results are set out, with dates, under How it started above.

Buying it in India

Breitling runs an India-English store quoting rupee prices, and names Kapoor Watch Company and Mumbai’s Swiss Paradise among its authorised retailers. It publishes no Indian office, service centre or phone number.

Check 01

Read the warranty length as a movement test

Five years on the card means a B01 or B19, Breitling’s own calibre. Two years means a Calibre 17 or 32, an ETA base. You can read the movement off the guarantee.

Check 02

Make sure the card is activated

Breitling’s terms exclude claims on unactivated warranties, and activation happens on purchase in store or on shipment of an online order. An inactive card is the tell, whatever the seller promises about international cover.

Check 03

Know the discount floor

MRP is the Swiss franc list times 105, and the best authorised price we found is 1.9% under it. A much bigger discount from a seller you cannot check is a warning, not a bargain.

Check 04

Do not bother carrying one in

The baggage allowance is ₹75,000 and the cheapest Breitling here is ₹3,36,000, so nothing clears it. With India already 19.5% below Switzerland, declaring one on arrival costs more than buying it in Delhi.

Check 05

Budget the running cost

Breitling recommends maintenance every two years and a complete service every four to six, averaging four weeks. Budget for it alongside the purchase price.

Worth knowing

Breitling publishes a service price list with a serial-number lookup, but no rupee figure appears in its Indian catalogue. Ask an authorised retailer to quote the complete service in writing before you commit.

Common questions

Is Breitling an independent watch company?

It depends on the definition. Partners Group holds over 50% and CVC Capital Partners 23.6%, as reported in February 2026, and both are listed private-equity managers. Breitling sits outside Richemont, LVMH and the Swatch Group, which is the sense in which it is called independent.

Are Breitling watches actually cheaper in India?

Yes, on 31 August 2026. The Indian MRP was the Swiss franc list times 105. Strip 18% GST here and 8.1% VAT there, and India was 19.51% below Switzerland on every reference and about 19.7% below the United States on steel. Prices and exchange rates change, so recheck before you buy.

Does every Breitling have an in-house movement?

No. The B01 and B19 are Breitling’s own. The Calibre 17 is an ETA 2824-2 and the Calibre 32 an ETA 2893-2, and they run the Avenger Automatic, the Avenger GMT and the Navitimer Automatic GMT. Five years of warranty applies only to the manufacture calibres.

Is every Breitling COSC-certified?

The mechanical range is, including the ETA-based watches — independent reporting confirms certification on the Calibre 32. COSC guarantees −4/+6 seconds a day, which is a chronometer’s standard rather than a stricter house rule.

The FA take

On price, Breitling is the best deal in Swiss luxury watchmaking in India, and it is not close. A 19.51% discount to Switzerland on every reference, and about 19.7% to the United States on steel, is the deepest India advantage we have measured on a Swiss brand. It also settles an argument: Breitling has no luxury-group parent, prices India the way group-owned brands do, and prices it lower.

Two things to weigh. “Independent” here means outside the big luxury groups; the company is owned by private-equity investors. And the entry point is the weakest value in the range, in our view: at ₹4,62,000 the Avenger Automatic 42 pairs an ETA 2824-2 base with 38 hours of reserve and two years of cover, against Breitling’s own movement and five years on the B01 models.

Stretch to a B01 if you can — the ₹2.31 lakh step up buys Breitling’s own 70-hour movement and five years of cover.
