The pitch for essence in India writes itself: Europe’s best-selling makeup brand, German, vegan, and cheap. Two of those are straightforwardly true. The third is the one to test, because “cheap in Germany” and “cheap in India” are different sentences.
Run the brand’s Indian prices through the test this site applies to every kajal — rupees per gram — and the answer arrives quickly. essence is not an Indian budget brand. It sits at the top of that band and partly above it.
essence is owned by cosnova GmbH, the private German family company that also owns Catrice, and it is the only one of the two that reached India properly — Reliance Retail Limited has been its exclusive distributor since 17 November 2025, with 167 items live on Tira. Indian MRPs run ₹275 to ₹600. Its 0.28 g eye pencil works out at ₹932 per gram against Blue Heaven’s ₹333 and Insight’s ₹97. It wins on exactly one thing: mascara, at ₹18 to ₹24 per millilitre. Prices checked 3 September 2026.

How it started
Christina Oster-Daum and Javier González met working at Coty and left to start a German cosmetics company that sold well-made products cheaply. essence was the result, and it was the first thing they launched. cosnova’s own timeline opens in 2002 with the line “With cosnova and essence, our journey into the world of beauty begins”, records “#1 in Germany” in 2007, and puts European market leadership at 2013.
The founding year wobbles inside the company’s own materials — its corporate profile and its German sustainability filing both say 2001, while the timeline and homepage date everything from 2002. The likeliest reading is that the company was incorporated in 2001 and the brand launched in 2002. Catrice came two years later, in 2004, as the dearer sibling. Neither brand is the other’s rival; they are two price ladders built on one supply chain.
One date matters more than the founding one. cosnova’s own timeline dates the move to 100 per cent vegan formulations to 2020. Anything implying essence was always vegan is wrong, and the company does not claim it was.
What they actually make
cosnova owns no factory. Its German Sustainability Code declaration states plainly that the company “does not have its own production site” and that its products “are manufactured in Europe and Asia on a contract basis”, with 90 per cent made in Europe — a 2018 filing covering the 2017 financial year. The November 2025 Reliance announcement gives an essence-specific figure of “over 80% of products manufactured in Europe”. Different years, different scopes; take each with its date.
The Indian listings say something more concrete, and more useful. Four essence declarations were read across two retailers on 3 September 2026, and they name a country and an importer every time.
| Product | Country of origin | Manufacturer named |
|---|---|---|
| Call Me Queen Dramatic False Lash Effect Mascara, 11.5 ml | Italy | None |
| Lash Without Limits mascara 01, 13 ml | Italy | None |
| Call Me Queen mascara, waterproof | Italy | None |
| Lash Princess False Lash Effect Mascara, 12 ml | Luxembourg | None |
Declarations shown on Tira and Amazon.in listings for these products, 3 September 2026. Importer and marketer on all four: Reliance Retail Ltd, 3rd Floor, Court House, Lokmanya Tilak Marg, Dhobi Talao, Mumbai 400002.
Two things follow. First, “Made in Germany” is not what the pack says. essence is a German brand with a German owner, and these mascaras were made in Italy and Luxembourg. It is a multi-origin contract portfolio, exactly as cosnova’s own statement implies.
You learn which country the mascara came from and which Indian company brought it in. You never learn who made it.
Second, four listings are four listings. This audit will not tell you essence never names its manufacturer in India, because four packs cannot carry that weight. What it will say is that on the four read, the field was empty every time. The maker’s name is the one line of a cosmetic label that marketing has no reason to print, and Indian law requires it on the carton — which is why our Campus audit stands out: a brand that runs its own plants tends to say so.
- cosnova GmbH, SulzbachOwns the brand, owns no factory
- A contract manufacturer in Italy or LuxembourgNamed on no listing read
- Reliance Retail Limited, MumbaiExclusive Indian distributor since 17 November 2025; importer and marketer of record
- Tira167 essence items listed on 3 September 2026
Note which Reliance company that is. Reliance Retail Limited signed the distribution deal and appears on the packs. It is not Reliance Beauty & Personal Care, which runs Sephora India — and Sephora India carries zero essence products. The exclusive arrangement shows up precisely where you would expect it, on the group’s own beauty platform, and not on its other one.
What Essence costs in India
Fifteen listings were read on Tira on 3 September 2026, with net quantities shown in the product names. The MRP band is ₹275 to ₹600 and the selling band that day was ₹175 to ₹480.
| Product and pack size | Selling price | Per gram or millilitre |
|---|---|---|
| Long-Lasting Eye Pencil, 0.28 g | ₹261 | ₹932 per g |
| Eyeliner Pen Extra Long-Lasting, 1.1 ml | ₹261 | ₹237 per ml |
| 24 Ever Ink Liner, 1 ml | ₹206 | ₹206 per ml |
| Conceal Like A Pro Colour Correcting Palette, 4 g | ₹360 | ₹90 per g |
| Blush Crush, 5 g | ₹175 | ₹35 per g |
| Fix & Last Make-Up Fixing Spray, 50 ml | ₹475 | ₹9.50 per ml |
| Call Me Queen mascara, 11.5 ml | ₹280 | ₹24.30 per ml |
| Lash Without Limits mascara, 13 ml | ₹240 | ₹18.50 per ml |
Tira, read 3 September 2026. Selling prices are that day’s discounted prices, not MRP.
The eye pencil is the number that answers the reader’s real question. It is a 0.28 g pencil at ₹261, which is ₹932 a gram, and the tiny pack is what does it.
- essence Long-Lasting Eye Pencil, 0.28 g
- ₹932 per gram
- Blue Heaven kajal
- ₹333 per gram
- Insight Cosmetics kajal, 1.7 g
- ₹97 per gram
- Gap against Insight
- 9.6 times dearer
- Checked on
- 3 September 2026
So a German budget import costs roughly 2.8 times Blue Heaven’s kajal per gram and about nine and a half times Insight’s. On whole-product prices the picture is gentler but points the same way: Swiss Beauty sells at ₹99 to ₹324, Blue Heaven keeps its entire range under ₹500, and essence starts at ₹275 MRP and reaches ₹600. Treat a printed MRP as a reference number rather than a price anyone pays — the conclusion our Sparx and Liberty audits reached about footwear stickers applies here too.
There is one clear win, and it deserves its own sentence. essence mascara costs ₹240 to ₹280 for 11.5 to 13 ml, or ₹18 to ₹24 per millilitre. On volume that is competitive with anything Indian at that price, and it is the product the brand is actually famous for.
Those are one day’s discounted prices on Tira. At the printed MRP of ₹400 the mascara works out at ₹31 to ₹35 per millilitre and the advantage narrows sharply, so check the discount before treating essence as cheap.
Who Essence is actually for
The honest buyer for essence in India is someone who wants European packaging, a vegan formulation and a named importer, and is willing to pay a little more per gram than an Indian budget brand charges. That is a real customer and there is nothing wrong with being one. It is simply not the customer the “cheap German makeup” framing describes.
It is also the cheaper half of its own family by a wide margin. Both brands run their own American storefronts, so they can be compared on the same country’s list prices on the same day.
| Category | essence, US list | Catrice, US list |
|---|---|---|
| Mascara | $4.99 | $8.00 |
| Foundation | $5.99 | $10.00 |
| Lip gloss or oil | $3.99 | $6.00 |
| Core range | $3.99 to $6.99 | $5.00 to $10.00 |
Both storefronts read 3 September 2026. Neither publishes net quantities on its listing pages, so this is product for product, not per gram.
Catrice runs 1.5 to 1.7 times essence on the products that matter most, and that is the design rather than an accident: one company, one supply chain, two ladders. It is also academic for an Indian shopper, because Catrice was left out of the Reliance deal and has no Indian importer at all. Between the two cosnova brands, the cheaper one is the one you can actually buy here with an Indian company’s name on the box.
Reputation and controversies
The headline claim on every Indian announcement is “Europe’s No. 1 cosmetics brand”, and the qualifier is the whole story. The release itself says number one by units sold. cosnova’s own annual results rank the group sixth in the world in decorative cosmetics by value and second by volume. A cheap brand outselling expensive ones by unit count is close to a definition rather than an achievement, and no auditor, panel or market-research house is named beside it. The claim is fine; print it with its basis attached.
“Award-winning” appears on the brand’s own site with no award named, so this audit does not repeat it. The 100 per cent vegan claim is a dated self-declaration from 2020 with no certifier behind it. The “over 80% manufactured in Europe” figure is unaudited and sits beside the company’s own 90 per cent from a different year.
The cruelty-free claim is the one that holds up independently. PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies directory carries an entry headed “essence is Cruelty-Free”, stating that neither ingredients nor finished products are tested on animals and that suppliers and third parties follow the same standard. Its sibling Catrice has the same entry. That is the directory rather than the badge, and it is worth crediting — though animal testing of cosmetics has been illegal in India since 21 May 2014, so cruelty-free is the legal floor here rather than a premium feature.
The reassuring part of this audit is structural. essence has an exclusive distributor, a named Indian importer and a first-party platform that renders the statutory block. A buyer with a problem has an Indian company to take it to. That is the opposite of its sibling’s position, and the contrast between two brands of one German owner is the most useful thing either page can show you.
Buying it in India
Tira is the established home for the brand, with 167 items listed on 3 September 2026. Sephora India shows zero essence products despite being a Reliance banner. Marketplace listings exist and carry Reliance Retail as the importer contact, but nothing was established about individual sellers there and nothing is asserted.
Divide by the pack weight before you buy
essence prints net quantity in the product name, which is more than most. A 0.28 g pencil at ₹261 is ₹932 a gram. A 5 g blush at ₹175 is ₹35. The same brand can be excellent and terrible value on one page.
Read the importer block on the carton
It should say Reliance Retail Ltd, Dhobi Talao, Mumbai 400002. That is the company the exclusive distribution deal names, and the company you would deal with if something is wrong.
Expect the country of origin to vary
Italy on three of the four listings read, Luxembourg on the fourth. A different country on your box is not a warning sign for this brand; it is how a contract portfolio works.
Compare the mascara, not the pencil
Mascara is where essence is genuinely cheap in India at ₹18 to ₹24 per millilitre. Eye pencils and liners are where it is dearest per gram. Buy accordingly.
Check whether you are paying MRP
The discounts observed ran from 5 per cent to 50 per cent on the same page. The MRP band is ₹275 to ₹600; the value case rests almost entirely on the discount holding.
On the wider question of which company actually stands behind a famous name in India, our Bata audit makes the point from the other direction: the brand on the box and the Indian company answerable for it are often two different things. essence is one of the cleaner examples, because both are printed.
Common questions
Is essence cheaper than Indian budget makeup?
Not on the per-gram test. Its 0.28 g eye pencil is ₹932 per gram against Blue Heaven’s ₹333 and Insight’s ₹97. Its MRPs start at ₹275 and reach ₹600, while Blue Heaven keeps everything under ₹500. Mascara is the exception, at ₹18 to ₹24 per millilitre.
Who owns essence?
cosnova GmbH, a private German family company at Sulzbach am Taunus, registered as HRB 54730 at the Frankfurt district court. It also owns Catrice, and turned over €991 million in FY2025.
Where can I buy essence in India?
Reliance Retail Limited has held exclusive Indian distribution since 17 November 2025, and 167 items were listed on Tira on 3 September 2026. Sephora India carries none, despite also being a Reliance beauty banner.
Is essence made in Germany?
No. cosnova states it has no production site of its own and manufactures on contract in Europe and Asia. The Indian listings read declare Italy on three products and Luxembourg on a fourth, and none of them names the manufacturer.
What does “Europe’s No. 1” actually mean?
It is a ranking by units sold, stated as such in the announcement. cosnova separately ranks its group sixth in the world in decorative cosmetics by value and second by volume. Volume leadership for a low-priced brand is close to a tautology.
Is essence the same company as Catrice?
Yes. Both are cosnova brands — essence launched in 2002, Catrice in 2004 — made by the same contract manufacturers. Catrice lists at 1.5 to 1.7 times essence on the same US storefronts, and has no Indian importer at all.

essence does the hard parts properly. It has an exclusive Indian distributor, an importer of record printed on the pack, a country of origin on every listing read, a directory-backed cruelty-free entry and a vegan claim with a date on it. Against most imports in this price range that is a strong record, and it is the reason this is the cosnova brand worth buying here.
What it does not do is undercut Indian budget makeup, and the marketing implies otherwise. A 0.28 g eye pencil at ₹932 a gram is nearly three times Blue Heaven and nine and a half times Insight; ₹600 MRPs sit above a band Blue Heaven keeps entirely under ₹500. The “Europe’s No. 1” line is a unit-count ranking, and not one of the four packs read tells you who made the thing.
Buy the mascara at ₹18 to ₹24 a millilitre and leave the eye pencils on the shelf — that single product is most of the case for this brand in India.
