Longines Brand Audit: India Undercuts Switzerland And The US

Longines is one of the very few watch brands that publishes both Indian prices and Indian service costs in rupees. We check them against the US and Swiss lists, and settle the in-house movement question.

A Longines starts at ₹1,52,000 in India, and the brand publishes that figure itself, in rupees, on its own site. It also publishes what the watch will cost to keep: ₹28,000 for a mechanical full service, ₹1,500 for a battery. Almost nothing at this price does either. This audit checks those numbers against the American and Swiss lists.

The short answer

Longines is the High Range brand of Switzerland’s Swatch Group, sold in India from ₹1,52,000 to ₹5,23,000 on its own published price list, checked 30 August 2026. On the Legend Diver, the Indian pre-tax price is 11.1% below the United States and 8.7% below Switzerland, so the duty-premium story is wrong. The calibres are exclusive to Longines, but built by ETA, a sister company, not by Longines.

How it started

Auguste Agassiz set up a watchmaking workshop in Saint-Imier in 1832. His nephew Ernest Francillon took over in 1852 and in 1866 bought two plots in a meadow the locals called les longines, the long meadows. The factory opened there in 1867, and the field gave the company its name.

Longines, 1832 to 1900
  • 1832Auguste Agassiz’s watchmaking workshop opens in Saint-Imier
  • 1867Factory inaugurated in the long meadows; calibre 20A follows
  • 1889Francillon registers the name and the winged hourglass
  • 1893The mark is filed internationally under the Madrid Agreement
  • 1900The company is officially called Longines from 20 April

The name came from a field, and it came 35 years after the workshop did.

Indian coverage routinely calls Longines the world’s oldest watch brand. It has never made that claim. Its actual claim is narrower and verifiable: the 1889 Swiss mark was filed under the Madrid Agreement in 1893, the fourteenth application ever entered in the international register, and all thirteen before it have lapsed. So the Longines mark is the oldest one still valid and still used in its original form. That is a trademark record, not a founding record.

By the 1980s Longines had also stopped making its own movements. The company was folded into the Swiss groupings that became Swatch Group, and manufacture went first to Ebauches SA and then to ETA. It never came back. A brand with more than 51 million watches on one unbroken serial-number series since 1832 is not a manufacture today, and does not say it is.

What they actually make

Six collections carry the Indian range. Conquest and HydroConquest are the sports lines and the entry point, Elegance and DolceVita the dress side, Master Collection the volume line. Legend Diver reissues a 1959 dual-crown compressor diver, and Spirit, from 2020, is the aviation line that made chronometer certification normal here.

The movements are where this brand is most misdescribed, in both directions. Longines never calls its calibres in-house. It calls them “exclusive Longines calibres”, and that phrase is doing precise work.

Where a Longines calibre comes from
  1. Longines, Saint-ImierMade its own movements from 1867; calibre 20A was the first
  2. Ebauches SAMovement work moves out after the group absorption
  3. ETA SAGroup movement maker; by the 1980s Longines makes none
  4. ETA builds, Longines specifiesExclusive calibres today: L888, L844, L688, L788

ETA is not an outside supplier. It sits under “Production” in Swatch Group’s own organisation chart, beside Nivarox-FAR, which makes hairsprings.

So here is the accurate sentence. The L888 in a Legend Diver derives from the ETA A31.L11, the L844.4 in a Spirit Zulu Time from the A31.L411. Both are built by a sister company, and both are materially upgraded over the catalogue part: a longer barrel giving 72 hours instead of roughly 42, a silicon balance spring that shrugs off magnetism, and on many references a COSC chronometer certificate. No other brand can buy one, because the supplier and the buyer share a parent.

Ninety places to buy a Longines in India. Two places to service one.

Worth knowing

Not every Longines is a chronometer. Spirit, Spirit Zulu Time and Record are certified; the Legend Diver’s own product page names none. Check the specific reference before paying for one.

One further correction. Longines has no METAS Master Chronometer watches — that is a separate, higher certification used by Omega and Tudor. If a listing calls a Longines a Master Chronometer, the listing is wrong.

What Longines costs in India

Start with the fact that makes this section possible. Longines runs a full Indian locale on its own site, with a rupee price on every product page, labelled a recommended retail price for India. Very few watch brands do this. Every Indian figure below is Longines’ own number, not a dealer’s quote.

The Legend Diver reference L3.774.4.90.2 is listed in three markets. Indian prices include 18% GST, Swiss prices 8.1% VAT, and American list prices no sales tax at all, so an honest comparison strips tax from each. Converted at Federal Reserve rates for 21 August 2026:

India, ex-GST
₹2,42,373
United States, ex-tax
₹2,72,745
Switzerland, ex-VAT
₹2,65,323
Gap
11.1% cheaper in India than the US, 8.7% cheaper than Switzerland
Checked on
30 August 2026

The Spirit Zulu Time gives the same answer: 10.7% below the US, 8.0% below Switzerland. Across the 57-piece HydroConquest range, the cheapest and dearest pieces both land 12.6% under the American price. Tax-inclusive, that Legend Diver is ₹2,86,000 in India against a Swiss shelf worth ₹2,86,813 — a gap of 0.3%.

The mechanism kills a myth. Watches land in India carrying 20% basic customs duty, a cess and a surcharge, plus 18% IGST — an indicative 49.15% on ₹100 of assessable value. But duty is charged on the landed transfer value, the invoice the Swiss company raises on its own Indian subsidiary, not on the ₹2,86,000 shelf tag. The IGST portion is credit the importer recovers. What remains is roughly a quarter of a much smaller number, and the importer is pricing to global parity anyway. Because Indian GST is more than double Swiss VAT, that arithmetic forces the Indian pre-tax price down.

“Indian duty makes Swiss watches expensive” is false on every reference checked here. What is left is a margin decision, not a customs story.

Collection Indian price range References
Conquest ₹1,52,000 – ₹2,07,000 83
HydroConquest ₹1,56,000 – ₹2,37,000 57
Elegance, incl. DolceVita ₹1,70,000 – ₹2,85,000 294
Master Collection ₹2,37,000 – ₹5,19,000 101
Legend Diver ₹2,67,000 – ₹4,12,000 18
Spirit Zulu Time ₹3,48,000 – ₹5,23,000

Longines’ own India price list, checked 30 August 2026. An authorised dealer lists a Presence at ₹94,000, below the published floor.

Two authorised dealers were checked reference by reference against that list, and both sell at it: a Conquest at ₹1,52,000, a Legend Diver Terracotta at ₹3,88,000. No strike-through, no percentage off. That is unusual in Indian watch retail, where 20% to 30% off is close to permanent on domestic catalogues. If someone offers a quarter off a new Longines, that is information about the seller.

Then the part almost nobody publishes. Longines gives its Indian maintenance prices in rupees, inclusive of tax, and recommends a full service every six to eight years.

Procedure Partial Full
Quartz, hands and calendar ₹8,300 ₹19,000
Quartz chronograph ₹10,150 ₹26,700
Mechanical, hands and complications ₹8,300 ₹28,000
Mechanical chronograph ₹10,150 ₹36,800
Battery change, and polishing ₹1,500 ₹9,250

Longines India maintenance prices, checked 30 August 2026. Parts are charged separately. Demagnetisation and rate control are free.

Work that through. A ₹2,86,000 Legend Diver needs ₹28,000 of servicing every six to eight years, just under a tenth of its purchase price. A quartz Conquest needs ₹19,000, or ₹1,500 for a battery. Against that, a Fastrack under ₹3,000 is serviced for a few hundred rupees in most towns. The running cost, not the sticker, is the real difference here.

Who Longines is actually for

Swatch Group publishes its own ladder, and Longines and Omega stand on different rungs of it. Omega is filed under Prestige and Luxury; Longines is High Range, with Rado. That is the group’s organisation chart, not an opinion, and it runs through our watch brand coverage.

Industry estimates published in February 2026 by Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult put Longines seventh among Swiss brands at roughly CHF 920 million on about 780,000 watches, against Omega at CHF 2.21 billion on about 460,000. Longines sells around 1.7 times the units for 42% of the revenue. These are financial models rather than reported accounts, and Swatch Group has contested the report — but the shape is right.

So a buyer at ₹1.5 to ₹2 lakh is not choosing between Longines and Omega. At that budget Omega has no product at all: its cheapest Indian watch runs past ₹6.9 lakh. Xylys stops near ₹75,900, Longines starts at ₹1,52,000, Omega at ₹6,90,300. Very little in that band offers a Swiss automatic and a chronometer certificate, which is the whole reason Longines sells here. If your budget sits below it, an honest Sonata or Titan piece does the job without a courier to Delhi every six years.

One filter before you commit. Much of Conquest and DolceVita is quartz — a battery watch in a Swiss case, a fine thing but a different thing, and it carries two years of warranty rather than five. Our comparison of watch movement types sets out what changes.

Reputation and controversies

The most relevant decided matter is Indian and recent. On 12 September 2024 the Commercial Courts at Patiala House, New Delhi, granted Rado Uhren AG and others a permanent injunction against Surjeet Singh and another, restraining them from selling goods under the RADO, TISSOT, OMEGA, LONGINES, CK, CALVIN KLEIN and SWATCH marks. The court ordered the counterfeit stock delivered up for destruction and awarded costs to the group. It cuts both ways: counterfeit Longines is common enough in Delhi to be litigated to judgment, and the owner does enforce.

Longines does not always win. On 12 February 2015 the EU General Court dismissed a Longines trademark opposition, upholding the earlier refusal. Longines had objected to another party’s figurative mark for horological instruments on the strength of its winged hourglass, and lost — a useful counterweight to the oldest-trademark framing.

Commercially, 2025 was hard. The same estimates record an 18% fall in Longines sales, taking it below the billion-franc line. Swatch Group publishes no brand-level figures, so every Longines revenue number in circulation is an outside estimate. That also means “India’s best-selling Swiss luxury watch” cannot be verified, however often it is repeated.

We found no regulatory action, product recall, advertising adjudication or consumer commission order against Longines or Swatch Group’s Indian company. Read that as nothing found rather than a clean bill of health.

Buying it in India

Longines publishes no consumer guide to spotting a fake, and this audit will not invent one. Case engraving depth, crown feel, bracelet weight — none of that is brand-published. What Longines does give a buyer is better, because it is documentary and it is priced.

Check 01

Is the seller on Longines’ own list?

Longines runs a store locator on its Indian site. If the shop is not on it, the watch is not arriving with a warranty Longines will honour.

Check 02

Is the price at the published price?

Authorised dealers transact at Longines’ own listed figure. A heavy discount on new Indian stock is the most useful warning available, and it needs no expertise.

Check 03

Is the warranty card filled in by hand?

Longines requires a retailer stamp or sticker, a handwritten purchase date, the model reference and the serial number on the case. A blank card is one the brand will refuse.

Check 04

Mechanical or quartz?

Five years of warranty applies to mechanical watches bought from 1 January 2021. Quartz gets two. Ask which one you are buying, because the ranges mix both.

Check 05

Genuinely unsure what you have?

Longines sells a certificate of authenticity in India for ₹20,000. Its serial-number registers run unbroken since 1832, which is what makes that certificate possible.

The warranty is international, which settles the grey-market question. A card properly stamped by an authorised Longines dealer anywhere in the world is honoured in India. An unstamped card is worth nothing anywhere.

The arithmetic no longer favours buying abroad, though. That Legend Diver is ₹2,42,373 pre-tax in India against ₹2,86,813 on the Swiss shelf. A traveller pays the foreign price with foreign tax inside it, gets ₹75,000 of duty-free baggage allowance under the rules in force from 2 February 2026, and pays duty on the excess. The one real saving is a Swiss or EU VAT refund on export, which takes the Swiss piece to about ₹2,65,300 — and duty above the allowance eats most of that back.

Finally, service. Longines names two customer service points in India, both run by Swatch Group’s Indian company: Saket in New Delhi and Khar West in Mumbai. Retail has grown from nine boutiques and 90 points of sale in 2016 to company-owned stores, franchise boutiques and 80-plus multi-brand dealers, with new boutiques in Pitampura and Bengaluru in 2026. The buying network expanded; the servicing network is still two addresses. A reader in Coimbatore or Indore is buying into a courier relationship for the life of the watch. Anyone shopping this band should also read our guide to everyday watches.

Common questions

Is Longines the world’s oldest watch brand?

No, and Longines does not claim it. Its claim is that it holds the oldest trademark still in use in its original form on WIPO’s international register, filed in 1893. The workshop dates to 1832 and the company was only officially named Longines in 1900.

Are Longines movements in-house?

No. They are designed to Longines’ specification and built by ETA, a sister company inside the same group, and they are exclusive to Longines. They are also upgraded over catalogue parts, with 72-hour barrels, silicon balance springs and chronometer certification on many references.

Is a Longines cheaper in Dubai or Switzerland?

Not meaningfully. On the Legend Diver, the Indian shelf price sits within 0.3% of the Swiss one, and India is 11.1% cheaper than the United States before tax. A VAT refund abroad helps until duty applies above the ₹75,000 baggage allowance, and the saving mostly disappears.

How long is the Longines warranty in India?

Five years on mechanical watches bought from 1 January 2021, and two years on quartz. It is an international warranty, but only on a card stamped by an authorised dealer and completed by hand with the date, the model and the serial number on the case.

What does servicing a Longines cost in India?

Longines publishes them in rupees: a full mechanical service ₹28,000, a chronograph ₹36,800, a quartz service ₹19,000 and a battery change ₹1,500, checked on 30 August 2026. A full service is recommended every six to eight years.

The FA take

Longines is the most transparent watch brand in India above ₹1 lakh, and that is not a compliment about its marketing. It publishes a rupee price on every reference and a rupee service price with an interval, and its dealers sell at those prices. An Indian buyer pays 11.1% less than an American does before tax.

Two things deserve scepticism. The calibres are excellent and exclusive, but ETA builds them, and anyone paying up believing they are buying a manufacture movement is paying for a story the brand itself never tells. And the servicing reality is thin: two addresses in the country and ₹28,000 every six to eight years. On a ₹1,52,000 Conquest that is 18% of the purchase price, for a watch you cannot hand across a counter in your own city.

Worth buying in India rather than abroad, and worth buying mechanical rather than quartz — but if you live more than a flight from Delhi or Mumbai, budget the courier before you budget the strap.
