Maybelline Brand Audit: L’Oréal-Owned, Half the US List Price

Maybelline's Indian MRPs run at about half its US list prices, and the Indian Fit Me differs from the US one. Who owns it, what it costs, and its wear claims.
Maybelline brand audit by FashionAudit: Maybelline logo and the headline “L'Oréal-Owned, Half the US List Price” over a mascara wand with dramatic lashes

Maybelline sells a foundation called Fit Me in America and in India, under one name, at very different specifications. The American bottle comes in 40 shades, claims “up to 12 hours” of wear and carries no SPF. The Indian one comes in 18 shades, claims “16 hours of oil control” and adds SPF 22 — at roughly half the US list price. The name on both says New York. The company was founded in Chicago, and the “New York” arrived with L’Oréal in 1996.

The short answer

Maybelline is L’Oréal’s mass-market makeup brand, sold in India by L’Oréal India Private Limited. Indian MRPs run at 52–60% of the brand’s own US list prices, and street prices sit 35–45% below MRP — Fit Me’s 30 ml sold at ₹382 against a ₹649–679 MRP on 2 September 2026. The range carries wear claims of 16, 24, 30 and 36 hours, and the product pages read do not cite a test method for them. The Indian Fit Me differs from the US one in shades, hour claim and SPF.

How it started

In 1915, 19-year-old Tom Lyle Williams started a mail-order business on Chicago’s Indiana Avenue after watching his sister Mabel darken her lashes. The first product was Lash-Brow-Ine; the brand name fuses Mabel with Vaseline. Maybelline’s own India page tells the origin as a 1917 spark — “a dash of ash creates our first mascara”.

  2. Plough Inc.Buys it in 1967 for $136 million; moves it to Memphis
  3. L’Oréal S.A.Wins a 1996 bidding war; has owned it since

The brand spent five decades in Chicago and was headquartered in Memphis when L’Oréal bought it — “Maybelline New York” is branding applied after the 1996 sale, not a birthplace.

The sale was a bidding war. L’Oréal agreed $36.75 a share, about $508 million; Germany’s Joh. A. Benckiser counterbid; L’Oréal won at $41 a share, a $570 million offer. Forbes later put the final cost at $660 million including assumed debt — other accounts run nearer $758 million, and the sources have never agreed. The result is undisputed: sales jumped from $350 million in 1996 to $1.1 billion by 2000, and Maybelline became America’s number one makeup.

The Indian company behind every Maybelline counter, L’Oréal India Private Limited, runs 26 brands here and reported ₹5,979.2 crore of FY25 revenue — for all of them together, so no Maybelline-only figure exists in public. Our Bata audit walks through the same structure in footwear: a global name whose Indian face is a separate company. Trade press puts Maybelline’s India launch at 1998, and L’Oréal’s own corporate blog credits the Colossal Kajal as a made-for-India success.

What they actually make

The Indian range covers eyes (Colossal mascara and kajal), face (Fit Me, Instant Age Rewind, SuperStay foundations) and lips (SuperStay inks, Color Sensational). Start with Fit Me, which is sold to a different specification in India and America.

Same name, about half the price, 18 shades against 40, an SPF the US bottle does not claim, and a different hour figure on the Indian page.

The kajal carries several figures. The regular Colossal Kajal, sold as “24Hr”, claims smudge-proof, waterproof wear “for up to 24 hours” and says “ophthalmologically tested”; the page does not name the tester or protocol. Its Super Black sibling claims 36 hours. A marketplace spec sheet for that same pencil prints “Wear Duration: 16 hours”.

None of the three pages cites a test method for its figure.

maybelline.co.in kajal pages and Flipkart listing, all read 2 September 2026.

SuperStay foundations claim “up to 30-hour wear” in India and America alike; the product page does not cite a test method for the claim. The About page states, in capitals, “WE ARE THE #1 MAKEUP BRAND AROUND THE WORLD”, without naming a source, metric or year. We found no accountable source for the separate claim, repeated online, that Maybelline is India’s largest colour-cosmetics brand: Euromonitor’s May 2026 summary has Hindustan Unilever, Lakmé’s owner, leading Indian colour cosmetics at company level.

Who makes the Indian stock? L’Oréal India owns factories at Baddi and Chakan and states “approximately 90% local production” for its whole portfolio — a company-level claim, not a Maybelline one; our Campus audit shows why the pack’s declaration matters even when a brand owns plants. Of ten Maybelline listings we read, only two carried an origin declaration: a Flipkart kajal listing naming L’Oréal India as manufacturer, “Country of Origin: India” — though the address is the Lower Parel registered office, not a plant — and a BigBasket Fit Me listing declaring India.

Worth knowing

maybelline.co.in publishes no manufacturer, licence number or country of origin on any page we read. Only two retail listings carried the declaration — kajal and Fit Me, both made in India. For everything else the pack is the only document; read it before you buy.

What Maybelline costs in India

Two prices exist for almost everything Maybelline sells: the MRP, and the 35–45% lower price the product actually transacts at online. Nobody paying attention pays MRP — a gap our Sparx audit tracks in footwear too. The MRPs printed also varied: the brand’s own site printed ₹599 on its foundation category page and ₹649 on the Fit Me product page the same day, while marketplaces printed ₹629–679.

Color Sensational Creamy Matte lipstick, 3.9 g₹299–329₹184 — ₹47.2 per gram

Divide by the grams and the counter rearranges itself. The 0.35 g kajal costs ₹389–514 per gram — ₹514–629 at MRP, and ₹586–857 for Super Black — which is seven to ten times the lipstick and roughly thirty times the foundation per unit of product. Lakmé’s rival Eyeconic kajal sits in the same ₹450–643 per gram band. Per gram, the kajal is the most expensive Maybelline product priced here.

Against the brand’s own American prices, though, India is the cheap market — the reverse of the imported-goods story.

American shops discount too, so read this as list against list rather than till against till — and it is not a like-for-like bottle, as the table above shows.

Who Maybelline is actually for

At street price, the foundation buyer does genuinely well: ₹12.7 per ml for a pump bottle, and the ₹181 Fit Me tube gets a student under ₹200. The kajal buyer pays the highest rate per gram, for the smallest pack on the counter. A buyer with deep or very fair skin should swatch before ordering: with 18 Fit Me shades against America’s 40, the shade you match to may simply not be sold here.

Reputation and controversies

On animal testing, both records are quoted as written. PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies directory lists Maybelline under “does test on animals” — a listing that covers testing directly, through suppliers, or selling in markets that mandate it. L’Oréal’s own page states: “Since 1989, we have not tested the safety of our products on animals, 14 years before regulations required us to do so.” Neither is a certification. Within the same company, Garnier holds Leaping Bunny approval; Maybelline holds no cruelty-free certification we could find, while rival Lakmé appears in PETA’s directory as cruelty-free. Animal testing of cosmetics has been illegal in India since 2014; the directory listing concerns the global company.

One decided matter sits at parent level. France’s competition authority fined L’Oréal €189.5 million on 18 December 2014 for price-fixing across home- and personal-care manufacturers; France’s highest court dismissed the final challenge on 18 October 2023. The case concerned products sold in France, not Maybelline makeup in India.

In India, ASCI’s published annual complaints report for 2024–25 names neither L’Oréal nor Maybelline; it flags personal care as a violative category without naming advertisers.

Counterfeits are documented and dated. On 14 March 2024, Hyderabad’s Task Force seized fake Maybelline stock worth ₹4.17 lakh from a Begum Bazar shop — 1,650 Baby Lips balms, 288 kajals, 97 Fit Me powders, 68 lipsticks and 9 foundations. Press coverage of an April 2022 Faridabad raid even misattributed the brand, describing seized goods as “Lakme and Fitme of Hindustan Uniliver” — Fit Me is Maybelline’s, which is to say L’Oréal’s. When newspapers get the owner wrong, buyers can be forgiven for not knowing what a genuine pack should say.

Buying it in India

Maybelline is sold everywhere — Nykaa, Purplle, Flipkart, BigBasket, beauty counters — which is why the pack matters more than the listing.

Check 01

Never pay MRP

Fit Me 30 ml sold at ₹382 against a ₹649–679 MRP on 2 September 2026. A 35–45% discount is the normal price, not a deal.

Check 02

Read the declaration on the pack

Look for the manufacturer or importer name and address on the pack itself. If the declaration is missing or misspelt, do not buy.

Check 03

Price the kajal per gram

Divide the price by 0.35 g: ₹136 is ₹389 per gram, ₹220 is ₹629. Compare that with a 3.9 g lipstick at ₹47 per gram before buying two.

Check 04

Test wear hours on your own skin

The kajal is listed with 16-, 24- and 36-hour figures across channels, and the pages read do not cite a test method. Judge wear on your own skin.

Check 05

Buy the cheap SKUs from big channels

The ₹136–205 kajal and balm price band is exactly where the Hyderabad counterfeits sat. Unknown sellers are the risk zone; the saving over an authorised listing is a few rupees.

Common questions

Is Maybelline a New York brand?

No. It was founded in Chicago in 1915 by Tom Lyle Williams and stayed there for five decades, then moved to Memphis under Plough Inc. “Maybelline New York” is branding applied after L’Oréal bought the company in 1996.

Who owns Maybelline?

L’Oréal S.A. of Paris, since a 1996 bidding war. In India it is sold by L’Oréal India Private Limited.

Is Maybelline cruelty-free?

PETA’s directory lists Maybelline as a company that does test on animals; L’Oréal states it has not tested its products on animals since 1989. Maybelline holds no cruelty-free certification we could find.

Is the Indian Fit Me the same as the American one?

Same name, different product. India gets 18 shades, a “16 hours of oil control” claim and SPF 22; America gets 40 shades, “up to 12 hours” of wear and no SPF — at roughly double the Indian MRP.

Is Maybelline India’s largest makeup brand?

We could not trace that claim to any accountable source. The brand’s own claim is global — “#1 makeup brand around the world”, with no metric named — and Euromonitor’s readable May 2026 summary gives company-level leadership in Indian colour cosmetics to Hindustan Unilever, which owns Lakmé.

The FA take

At street price, Maybelline is honestly cheap. Fit Me’s 30 ml at ₹382 works out to ₹12.7 per ml — a third of what the brand’s own US site asks — and SuperStay Matte Ink at ₹448 is real pigment for real money. For a working foundation or a liquid lipstick under ₹500, this counter is hard to beat.

Pay for the product. The wear figures — 12, 16, 24, 30 or 36 hours — vary by page and by market, and the pages read do not cite a test method. The Indian buyer of the same-named foundation gets 18 shades against America’s 40. On animal testing, PETA’s directory and L’Oréal’s own statement differ; both are quoted above.

Good value below MRP for foundation and liquid lipstick; judge it by the millilitres, and judge the wear hours on your own skin.
