Panerai puts two names on its dials, and neither was ever a watch. Radiomir was a radium-based luminous powder, named in the addendum of a patent filed in France on 23 March 1916. Luminor was a trademark registered on 11 January 1949 for dial material. The military history behind both is real. What is rarely said out loud is that Panerai sold nothing to the public until 1993.
Panerai is a Florentine name on a Swiss watch, owned by Richemont since 1997 and built at Neuchâtel. Its first watches for the public went on sale on 10 September 1993. Indian prices run ₹4,84,100 to ₹47,44,200, and on a Luminor Marina India is 17.0% below American list and 15.7% below Switzerland before tax. Prices checked 31 August 2026.

How it started
Giovanni Panerai’s Florence business was a watch shop, a workshop and the city’s first watchmaking school. From about 1900 it was also a dealer for other people’s watches — Rolex, Vacheron Constantin, Longines, Movado and later Patek Philippe. Panerai began as a shop that sold Rolexes, not a firm that made watches.
That makes the next fact legible. When the Italian navy wanted a large luminous diver’s watch in 1935, Panerai did not build it.
- CortébertSupplied the majority of the movements, including the 618
- RolexDesigned and made the cases; stripped its own stamps off the casebacks
- Officine Panerai, FlorenceSpecified the watch and supplied it on
- Regia Marina720 pieces of reference 3646, ordered 1943, delivered across 1943–44
Rolex did not make Panerai’s movements, and Panerai did not make Rolex’s watches. Both lines circulate and both are wrong.
The crown-protecting bridge, the most recognisable thing on a Panerai, is not wartime either: patented in Italy in the mid-1950s and the United States in 1960. Everything up to 1972 was issued to a navy — Italy’s, then Germany’s, and special models to Egypt.
Then, on 10 September 1993, aboard the navy cruiser Durand De La Penne at La Spezia, Panerai launched three collections drawn from ten references, all on a bought-in hand-wound ETA/Unitas 6497. On the published production runs, the whole pre-Vendôme output comes to roughly a thousand watches.
The Panerai you can buy is thirty-three years old, and the whole company was about a thousand watches deep when Richemont bought it.
Richemont’s predecessor, the Vendôme Luxury Group, bought the business in the spring of 1997. The heritage is genuine; the continuity is not. Understand the difference and you will value the watch correctly, rather than believe you are buying ninety years of manufacturing.
What they actually make
Panerai sits in Richemont’s Specialist Watchmakers division, which turned over €3,149m in the year to 31 March 2026 at a 3.4% operating margin, against €16,539m at 30.5% for the group’s jewellery houses. Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult estimate Panerai at about 55,000 watches and CHF 493 million of revenue in 2024, down from CHF 520 million in 2023.
- 1993Three collections launched on the ETA/Unitas 6497, bought in
- 1997Vendôme, now Richemont, buys Officine Panerai Srl
- 2005First own calibre, the P.2002
- 2014The current 10,000 square metre Neuchâtel manufacture opens
Panerai has made its own movements for about twenty years, in this building for about twelve.
Word the in-house claim carefully, because the marketing does not. SJX records that Richemont’s ValFleurier operation makes movements for most of the group’s brands, and names Panerai. Monochrome called the 2025 P.980 calibre a manufacture movement made by the Richemont Group. Panerai’s calibres are Richemont calibres, assembled at Panerai’s Neuchâtel manufacture — real and substantial, and not a house building movements from scratch.
The current range is entirely mechanical — worth understanding before you spend, because a mechanical movement changes what you own. The entry Luminor Base Logo runs the hand-wound P.6000; the Marina automatics run the P.900 family; the 2025 steel Marina runs the P.980 at 44 mm with 500 m water resistance. No Panerai specification page carries a COSC or METAS certification claim, so treat any article calling these certified chronometers as unsupported.
What Panerai costs in India
Panerai publishes no Indian prices. There is no India section on its website, and India does not appear in its boutique locator on either the American or the British site. Every rupee figure below is an authorised Indian retailer’s MRP.
Four unrelated references reproduce the same 15% gap against Switzerland to within six-tenths of a point, which is a pricing rule and not one shop’s margin. Still, confirm a seller’s Panerai authorisation from the seller’s side before you pay.
The cleanest comparison is the steel Luminor Marina PAM03313, a current reference sold in all three markets.
- US list, sales tax excluded
- ₹9,09,150
- Swiss shelf price, VAT stripped

That is not a one-off. Four references across two collections and both winding types land within six-tenths of a percentage point of each other against Switzerland.
| Reference | Indian MRP, GST stripped | Against Switzerland, VAT stripped |
|---|---|---|
| PAM03325 Luminor Marina | ₹8,45,169 | 15.1% cheaper |

So the line you read everywhere — that Indian duty makes a Swiss watch dear here — is wrong, and more wrong on Panerai than on any brand we have priced. Wristwatches attract 20% basic customs duty, a 4% cess and a 2.4% surcharge, plus 18% IGST: about ₹49 of tax on every ₹100 of assessable value.
Two things defuse it. Duty is charged on landed transfer value, not the shelf price, and a watch retailing at ₹8,90,800 does not land anywhere near that. The IGST is input tax credit for the importer, so the unrecoverable slice is 26.4% of a much smaller number. The rest is a pricing decision, and Richemont has priced India below global parity.
The range runs from ₹4,84,100 for a Radiomir to ₹47,44,200 for a Submersible, with the mass between ₹5.5 lakh and ₹13 lakh. ₹5,51,900 buys a 44 mm steel Luminor with a hand-wound three-day movement; ₹8,90,800 buys the same watch with an automatic. That is ₹3.4 lakh for a rotor, on two watches that look alike across a room.
Who Panerai is actually for
Panerai sells two case shapes, the cushion Radiomir and the crown-guarded Luminor, in a range of sizes, metals and dial colours. If you want a watch nobody has to be told the name of, that consistency is the point. If you want variety, it is a problem.
Size decides the rest. The core is 44 mm and wears large; the Luminor Due, from 2016, brought it down to 38 mm and 42 mm. Panerai’s former chief executive put men at 75 to 80% of customers. This is a specific taste — for a watch you will wear every day, our watch coverage starts in more sensible places.
The sharpest comparison is Omega: ₹8,90,800 against ₹9,29,300 for the flagship steel automatic, both Swiss, both group-owned. Omega has a METAS Master Chronometer certification and a Swatch-run Indian service network. Panerai has neither. Two steel watches at nine lakh, two different propositions.
Reputation and controversies
Panerai has won where it has gone to court. In China, the Shenzhen Luohu District People’s Court gave judgment on 12 October 2019, final on 13 April 2020, against the counterfeiter Awsky and its owner: sales to cease immediately and compensation to be paid. Awsky had produced 48 counterfeit models across at least 16 online platforms; neither published account gives the damages figure. In the United States, Officine Panerai AG was one of six Richemont plaintiffs who won a permanent injunction against the Pakistan-based Tradekey, reported on 8 November 2013.
The pressure on the brand is commercial rather than legal. It dropped out of the top 20 Swiss watch companies in the ranking published on 18 February 2026, on estimates that also show revenue falling. On the watches themselves, trade coverage describes the newest Panerai calibre as a Richemont group movement. Panerai’s own marketing does not draw that distinction.
Buying it in India
There are four Panerai boutiques — The Chanakya in New Delhi, Jio World Plaza and Palladium in Mumbai, and Mall of Asia in Bengaluru from March 2025 — and every one is run by a third-party retailer, Ethos or Art of Time, not by Richemont India. The official online channel is TimeVallée, which launched with Tata CLiQ Luxury on 16 March 2023. Against Richemont’s figure of 167 Panerai stores worldwide, four is about 2.4% of the network.
The counterfeit problem is real and the usual defence is missing. Panerai publishes no Indian dealer list, so you cannot check a shop against the brand’s own site as you would with most watch brands, and it publishes no authentication tells either. It does sell a Certificate of Authenticity from the manufacture, about €350 and six to eight weeks — but only for watches made from 1997, which excludes the vintage pieces most likely to be faked.
Establish authorisation from the seller
Ask the shop to show you the warranty card it will sign and stamp, before you pay. The brand’s own site will not confirm an Indian dealer for you.
Insist on the signature
The warranty runs 24 months, eight years on registration, only on a card signed by an authorised dealer. An unsigned card is the clearest sign something is wrong.
Treat ₹4,84,100 as the floor
That is the cheapest current-catalogue Panerai at authorised Indian retail. Anything well below it is not a bargain, it is a different object.
Ask which calibre is inside
A seller who cannot say whether the Luminor is the hand-wound P.6000 or an automatic P.900 does not know the product well enough to be trusted with ₹9 lakh.
Budget the certificate second-hand
About €350 buys Panerai’s own Certificate of Authenticity, for watches produced since 1997.
Buying abroad does not work here. The duty-free baggage allowance for a returning resident is ₹75,000 under the Baggage Rules 2026, and nothing in the catalogue comes near it, so any watch you carry in is declarable in full. India is already 15 to 17% cheaper before tax; adding foreign VAT or Indian duty turns a loss into a bigger one.
Then there is keeping it. Panerai’s published service list is in euros: €600 for a time-only overhaul, €790 for a chronograph or GMT. Those are European prices, not Indian ones, and Panerai names no Indian service centre publicly — which matters, because unauthorised servicing voids the warranty. Even at the European figure, €600 is about 7.5% of an ₹8,90,800 purchase, against roughly 4.3% for a comparable Cartier service, and water resistance is meant to be renewed every two years. Cheap to buy here, proportionally dear to keep.
Common questions
Are Panerai watches made in Italy?
No. They are Swiss Made, manufactured and assembled at Panerai’s Neuchâtel manufacture, where the operating company is also registered. The name and the design language are Florentine; the watch is Swiss.
Has Panerai really been making watches since 1860?
It dates from 1850 or 1860 depending on the account, but the Florence business was a shop, a workshop and a school, and from about 1900 a dealer for Rolex, Longines and Patek. It supplied the Italian navy from 1935–36 and sold nothing to the public until 10 September 1993.
Is a Panerai cheaper in India than abroad?
Yes, by an unusual margin. On four matched references India is 15.1% to 15.7% below Switzerland before tax, and on two of them 17.0% and 17.2% below American list. Prices checked 31 August 2026.
Where can I get a Panerai serviced in India?
Panerai does not publish an Indian service centre or an Indian service price list. Ask the boutique where your watch will go and how long it takes, and get the answer before you pay — third-party servicing voids the warranty.

On price, Panerai treats India better than any luxury watch brand we have measured. Four matched references land 15.1% to 15.7% below Switzerland before tax and two land 17% below American list. Anyone telling you duty makes this watch dear here has not checked. The range is also entirely mechanical, which at a ₹4,84,100 floor is more watch than a quartz Cartier at ₹3,85,000.
What deserves scepticism is everything around the watch. Panerai publishes no Indian prices, no Indian service list and no Indian dealer list, so the ordinary check on a seller does not exist here. The calibres are Richemont’s rather than Panerai’s alone, no reference carries a certification claim, and a €600 overhaul is about 7.5% of the purchase price each time, against roughly 4.3% for a Cartier.
Buy it for the shape, from one of the four boutiques, with the card signed in front of you — and if what you want is a nine-lakh Swiss steel automatic rather than a Luminor specifically, the Omega at ₹9,29,300 gives you a certification and a service network Panerai does not.
