The North Face Brand Audit: VF-Owned, Fill Power Published

The North Face is owned by VF Corporation. Where its Indian listings are declared made, who sells them, its ₹4,999 median price, and what backs its down claims.

The North Face is an American outdoor label owned by VF Corporation, the New York-listed group behind Vans and Timberland. On 15 September 2026 we read forty of its product records in full on an Indian fashion marketplace; every one declared a country of origin, mostly China. The brand’s down jackets publish fill power and a named certifier for their down. Trade press in January 2016 reported an exclusive online arrangement with Myntra for The North Face; nothing later was announced.

The short answer

The North Face belongs to VF Corporation, the New York-listed owner of Vans and Timberland. Its 100 listings read on 15 September 2026 sold at a median 48.6% of MRP, every one reduced. Its down jackets publish fill power and name Control Union as the down certifier.

What The North Face listings declare

All forty records we read on 15 September 2026 declared a country of origin outside India: China on 31, Vietnam on 6, the Philippines on 2 and Indonesia on 1.

The same day we read records for seven other brands, including Calvin Klein Jeans, Columbia and Decathlon.

What that reading does and does not mean

A shopping page is not the garment label, and nothing we read establishes what is printed on the garment itself.

The full declaration block is printed on the box. Read it when the parcel arrives.

Three things on that label repay a minute: the importer’s name and address, the country of origin — declared on all forty records, China on 31 — and the MRP line, which rule 6(1)(e) requires to state as “the maximum retail price inclusive of all taxes”.

Who sells The North Face in India

VF runs two reportable segments: Outdoor, holding The North Face and Timberland, and Active, holding Vans, Kipling, Eastpak and JanSport. Its annual report for the year to 28 March 2026 calls The North Face the largest brand in Outdoor. Outside the United States VF sells through “independent distributors and licensees”, with about 2,100 partnership stores independently owned.

That filing’s segment, distribution and sourcing descriptions do not name India. It names Singapore, Panama and Switzerland as sourcing hubs, and says the goods came from approximately 216 contractor factories in approximately 24 countries without naming them.

The list of significant subsidiaries filed with that report names exactly one Indian company: VF Sourcing India Private Limited. Its corporate identity number records incorporation in Karnataka in 2013.

There used to be a second one

The same list for fiscal 2019 carried two Indian rows.

The second Indian company on the 2019 list
  1. VF Brands India Private LimitedNamed in VF’s significant-subsidiary list for fiscal 2019
  2. Kontoor Brands separation completed23 May 2019 — Wrangler, Lee and Rock & Republic leave VF
  3. Fiscal 2026 listVF Sourcing India is the only Indian company named

A significant-subsidiary list is only a threshold list, so a company dropping off it does not by itself show where it went.

The 2016 arrangement

One published account exists of how the brand entered the country. Trade press of 8 January 2016 reported an exclusive, online-only arrangement with Myntra, and a second report called Myntra the exclusive seller in India. Neither says whether that was a licence or a distribution deal, and both are ten years old — a dated reading, not a standing fact. Nothing later was announced.

The brand’s own site offers a delivery-location selector of forty countries and regions; on 15 September 2026 India was not among them. The Indian trade marks stand registered to The North Face Apparel Corp on every record we read.

The counter you actually buy from

On the records read on 15 September 2026, the seller of record was the same third-party marketplace seller throughout.

Worth knowing

The seller of record is the party a buyer’s contract is with, and the returns window and refund come from the marketplace carrying the listing.

What The North Face costs in India

We read 100 distinct listings from a 338-item shelf on 15 September 2026. The median MRP was ₹9,999 and the median price actually charged ₹4,999 — 48.6% of the tag.

Every listing was reduced, all one hundred. The next nearest that day were Decathlon at 99 and Nautica at 98, while Columbia sat at 24. The whole 338-item shelf runs on eighteen MRPs and seven discount rungs, against Decathlon’s 43 and 65 — a price grid, not a price per garment.

Decathlon71.0%99 of 100
Ted Baker79.6%58 of 100
Superdry83.9%31 of 97
Columbia97.7%24 of 100

The table does not support the idea that an imported shelf discounts in proportion to how foreign it is. The North Face declares a foreign origin on 40 of 40 and charges 48.6%. Columbia declares a foreign origin on 40 of 40 and charges 97.7% — same platform, same day, same origin profile, forty-nine points apart.

The tier follows what buyers pay. T-shirts were 40 of our hundred listings and jackets 27, so the core here is a T-shirt and a jacket at a median ₹4,999 paid — premium rather than luxury.

Why this page prints no India-versus-America gap

The American range is coded and the codes are public. Three read on 15 September 2026: the Venture 2 Jacket, NF0A2VD3, at US$110.00; the 1996 Retro Nuptse, NF0A3C8D, at US$380.00; and the Summit Series Himalayan Down Parka, NF0A8C95, at US$780.00. An American list price excludes sales tax; an Indian MRP includes all taxes by rule.

No Indian listing we read carried one of those style codes, so no comparison is printed here. That is a limit of the listings read, not a finding that no matching garment is sold in India.

What stands behind the performance claims

The North Face describes its shell, insulation and down technologies on its own pages, read on 15 September 2026.

DryVent is described as “engineered to be fully waterproof, windproof and breathable”. On the pages read on 15 September 2026, the DryVent, FUTURELIGHT and ThermoBall pages cite no test method or figure for their waterproofing, breathability or insulation claims, and the down pages name no test method for fill power.

The product pages read the same way. The Venture 2 page describes a seam-sealed DryVent 2.5L shell and a fabric line of “40D 86 g/m²”, the denier and weight of the cloth.

The down figures

Fill power — the loft of a given weight of down, and the ordinary measure of warmth per gram — is given as 550, 600, 700, 800 and 1000, and repeated per product: 700 on the 1996 Retro Nuptse, 800 on the Himalayan parka — on the page before you buy.

The sourcing claim names a certifier too. The brand states that “since Fall 2016 we have only purchased RDS-certified down”, with Control Union Certifications named as the accredited third-party body working with Textile Exchange. Very few brands audited here name their certifier at all.

Nothing on this page tests a garment.

Can a buyer check that a jacket is genuine?

Not from anything the brand was found to publish. No code, serial number, hologram, QR verification, chip or lookup page was found. The brand’s general help section answers the question by saying “we cannot completely prevent the selling of non genuine products”.

Some brands do publish one: Diesel publishes a check page describing a label with a QR code and a twelve-digit code, on jeans since SS2017 and everything else from AW2021. For any jacket, the practical checks are to keep the invoice and read the label when it arrives.

What the courts have decided

The plaintiff in every Indian matter we read is The North Face Apparel Corp, the American mark owner, not any Indian company. The brand enforces its marks here directly, and has both won and lost doing so.

Three suits were decreed in its favour. A Delhi district court at Saket, on 10 January 2019, granted a permanent injunction for passing off and infringement, with ₹1,00,000 in damages — ₹50,000 punitive, to the Bharat Ke Veer Fund, and ₹50,000 compensatory — plus costs. The same court on 29 October 2022 decreed a second suit with an injunction, destruction of the impugned materials, ₹3,00,000 in damages and costs.

The third decree tells the other half of the story. On 8 January 2025 a Delhi commercial court decreed a suit against the first and third defendants with costs, and refused damages, finding the plaintiff had not proved the ₹3,50,000 it claimed.

Two decisions in Himachal Pradesh

On 10 January 2020 the High Court of Himachal Pradesh at Shimla dismissed the brand’s application and vacated the interim injunction it had obtained in 2018, taking the view that section 12 of the Trade Marks Act allows registration on honest concurrent use.

On 8 March 2022 a Division Bench dismissed the brand’s appeal against the refusal of a temporary injunction: “In view of the above, no ground for interference is made out. Accordingly, the appeal is dismissed.” The reasoning turned on class — the brand’s registrations are in classes 25, 18, 35, 9, 20 and 22, while the respondent, trading as North Face Adventure Tours, is in class 39, travel services.

The limits cut both ways. Each decision was on the matter before that court as it then stood, and none is a general ruling about the brand, its goods or its Indian listings. Nobody has ruled on anything beyond those five matters, and nothing here is a finding against anyone who was not a party.

What the advertising record shows

India’s advertising council publishes the complaints it has decided, and nothing on that record, read on 20 September 2026, names The North Face or VF Corporation.

Two limits go with it. The council is a self-regulatory body rather than a statutory regulator, so nothing it decides binds anyone. And the record covers complaints decided up to that day: nobody has ruled on any advertisement running now.

Common questions

Who owns The North Face?

VF Corporation, listed on the New York Stock Exchange as VFC. VF calls it the largest brand in its Outdoor segment, alongside Timberland. The Indian trade marks are held by The North Face Apparel Corp, an American company in the same group.

How is The North Face sold in India?

Through marketplace listings. Trade press of January 2016 reported an exclusive online arrangement with Myntra, and nothing later was announced. The brand’s own site did not list India as a delivery location on 15 September 2026.

What do The North Face listings declare?

On the 40 records read on 15 September 2026, country of origin was declared on all forty, mostly China. A shopping page is not the physical label; the declaration block is printed on the box, so read it when the parcel arrives.

What does The North Face say about DryVent?

The brand says DryVent is engineered to be fully waterproof, windproof and breathable. Nothing on this page tests the fabric; for a specific jacket, read the label and ask the brand for its test data.

Can I check whether a jacket is genuine?

Not against anything the brand was found to publish — no code, tag or lookup page. The practical check is the statutory declaration on the package. Read the label when the parcel arrives and keep the invoice.

Why is everything discounted?

On 15 September 2026 every one of 100 listings was reduced, at a median of ₹4,999 against a median MRP of ₹9,999. The whole 338-item shelf runs on eighteen MRPs and seven discount rungs, which is a price grid rather than a price per garment.

The FA take

The down is the strongest part of the case. Fill power is published per product, from 550 to 1000, and the sourcing claim names Control Union as certifier rather than waving at a standard. At the median ₹4,999 paid here, that is a lot of jacket.

The shells are a harder call to make from a product page; check the pack and ask the brand for its test report before paying for a technical jacket. In India the jacket is bought from a marketplace listing, so check its seller of record and the label on the box. At an every-listing discount to a median ₹4,999, the price is the shelf’s strongest argument.

Buy the down at the discounted price, and read the label the day it arrives.
