Tumi Brand Audit: Samsonite-Owned Luggage, Made in Asia

Tumi is owned by Samsonite; its Indian pages declare Indonesia, Thailand or China. Who imports it into India, tumi.in prices and the five-year warranty terms.
Tumi brand audit by FashionAudit: Tumi logo and the headline “Samsonite-Owned Luggage, Made in Asia” over a black ballistic-nylon business backpack and a sleek carry-on briefcase

Tumi is an American luggage and business-bag brand that has belonged to Samsonite Group S.A. since August 2016. Samsonite is listed in Hong Kong and, unusually for a bag group, publishes Tumi’s sales as a separate line.

In India the brand reaches buyers through a Reliance company rather than through Samsonite’s own Indian subsidiary. On 22 September 2026 its Indian website priced a carry-on suitcase at ₹90,000, while every Tumi listing on the marketplace Myntra was a bottle of perfume.

The short answer

Tumi is wholly owned by Samsonite, which reported US$870.7 million of Tumi sales for 2025. In India, tumi.in is run by a Reliance Brands company, product pages name Reliance Brands Limited as importer, and a customs tribunal record shows a 2011 distributorship agreement with Tumi Inc. Indian prices on 22 September 2026 ran from ₹70,000 to ₹95,000, and the five-year warranty applies only to purchases from an authorised Tumi store or dealer.

Who owns Tumi

Samsonite bought Tumi in a deal that closed on 1 August 2016. Its press release that day said Tumi shareholders became entitled to “US$26.75 per Tumi share in cash”, and that “Tumi became an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of the Company”. Tumi’s Indian trade mark is still filed in the name of Tumi, at an address in Edison, New Jersey, and the application claims use since 6 March 1985 — the applicant’s own claim.

Samsonite’s shares trade only in Hong Kong. Its 2025 results, released on 19 March 2026, said it intended to complete a US dual listing in 2026; the half-year release of 13 August 2026 added “if conditions improve”. Nothing read shows that listing has happened.

Owner revenue is not brand revenue, and here the owner gives both. Group net sales were US$3,497.6 million in 2025, down 2.5%. The Tumi line was US$870.7 million against US$860.2 million in 2024: the brand table shows 1.2% growth as reported, while the text says “increased by 1.0%”, the constant-currency figure. In the first half of 2026 Tumi sold US$404.2 million, 24.0% of the group, up 0.5% as reported and down 0.5% at constant currency.

India appears in those releases only as a market. Samsonite said group sales in India rose 4.3% in 2025 after an 18.3% fall in 2024, and in August 2026 it named India and the Middle East as the markets most affected by the Middle East conflict. Neither release gives an Indian figure for Tumi.

How Tumi reaches India

Samsonite has a large Indian company of its own, Samsonite South Asia Private Limited, with a factory at Gonde near Nashik. A Samsonite announcement of 12 October 2017 said 40% of it was held by members of the Tainwala Group; no later document on the split was read. Its website, samsonite.in, sold Samsonite goods on 22 September 2026 and had no Tumi section or link.

Tumi’s Indian site tells a different story. The terms of use, privacy policy and warranty page of tumi.in all name a Reliance company as the operator, though not identically: the terms say “Reliance Brands Luxury Fashion Limited”, the other two pages “… Private Limited”. The site’s footer reads “Copyright © 2026 Tumi, Inc.” and shows no company number. Product pages name a second company, Reliance Brands Limited, as importer and marketer.

A decided case supplies the arrangement in a document’s own words. In a customs appeal decided on 1 April 2024, the tribunal known as CESTAT listed a “Distributorship Agreement dated 01.04.2011 with Tumi Inc, USA” held by the operator, then called Genesis Luxury Fashion. So the relationship on the record, as at 2024, is a distributorship.

The company named on tumi.in
  1. Genesis Luxury Fashion Private LimitedIncorporated 20 September 2007, Mumbai
  2. Distributorship with Tumi Inc, USAAgreement dated 1 April 2011, per CESTAT
  3. Reliance Brands Luxury Fashion Private LimitedIts later name; operator named on tumi.in

The chain follows one company from incorporation to the name printed on tumi.in.

The operator’s own accounts for 2022-23, published on ril.com, name Reliance Retail Ventures as its immediate holding company and Reliance Industries as the ultimate one, with Genesis Colors holding 49.67% and Reliance Brands Limited 48.27%. That year it reported ₹308.82 crore from operations — the company’s revenue across everything it sold, not Tumi’s. Reliance Retail’s partner page lists Tumi under global brand partnerships without saying what kind.

On Myntra, Tumi means perfume

Search Myntra for Tumi and the brand filter returns 12 products. On 22 September 2026 all 12 were perfume, and not one was a bag.

The declarations on those 12 name the Fragrance Group of 70 West 36th Street, New York, as manufacturer on 11 and Contract Filling Inc. of New Jersey on one, with Global SS Beauty Brands Ltd of Malad, Mumbai, as importer on all 12. Every one declares the USA as country of origin, which is also the brand’s home country.

The perfume carried a median MRP of ₹6,150 and a median price paid of ₹3,690, or 60.0% of the tag, with all 12 reduced. Those numbers describe fragrance, not luggage, and this page sets no price band from them.

Where Tumi is made

Samsonite’s 2025 modern slavery statement, signed on 19 March 2026, says the group owns factories in Oudenaarde in Belgium, Szekszárd in Hungary and Nashik in India, and that “the remainder of our products are manufactured by independently owned and operated facilities”. Most of those outside makers are in Asia, it says, and it lists countries from China and Vietnam to Bangladesh. The statement does not break Tumi out, or say how many makers there are or in what share.

The Indian product pages are more specific. Of six read on 22 September 2026, two declared Indonesia, three Thailand and one China. The owner runs a factory in Nashik, yet none of the Tumi items read declared India.

What Tumi costs in India

Every tumi.in product page reads “Price inclusive of all taxes”, and none of the six was reduced on the day. tumi.com does not say whether its prices include sales tax. The two sites also use different style numbers, and the US site no longer serves the Indian carry-on’s code, so the pairs below are nearest equivalents by name, not matched codes. The Indian Brief Pack read was a camouflage colourway, not black.

Producttumi.com, US$ (tax basis not stated)tumi.in, ₹ (taxes included)Origin on tumi.in
19 Degree carry-on, blackUS$795 (1396831041)₹90,000 (0228771D2)Indonesia
Tumi Brief PackUS$695, black (1589571041)₹90,000, camo (02603580FCM4)Thailand
Alpha Bravo Navigation BackpackUS$550, black (1424791041)₹70,000, black (0232793D); ₹95,000 (0932793D)Thailand; China
Alpha Medium 15″ Expandable BriefcaseNot read₹85,000 (02603141GRYRFL4)Thailand

All prices read 22 September 2026. Names matched, not codes. No currency conversion is printed.

The Indian site sells one product name at two prices. “Alpha Bravo Navigation Backpack” appeared as a black Thai-made bag at ₹70,000 and, under another code, as a Chinese-made one at ₹95,000. Both are recorded here, because the page gives no reason for the difference.

Part of the Indian tag is tax. Bags of this kind, heading 4202, carry 18% integrated GST under Notification No. 9/2025-Integrated Tax (Rate) of 17 September 2025, and that tax sits inside the rupee price. We have not printed a basic customs duty rate, because none was read from an official source, and no exchange rate was read either, so this page puts the two prices side by side and computes no gap. For a Tumi bought abroad and sent home, the Budget 2026-27 cut duty on goods imported for personal use from 20% to 10% from 1 April 2026; how a courier parcel is assessed in practice is not established.

For scale, Indian hard-shell makers such as VIP Industries and Safari sell in a different market altogether. The cheapest Tumi read on tumi.in is ₹70,000, which puts every piece read in this site’s luxury band for bags, above ₹40,000.

The five-year warranty, and where it applies

Tumi’s warranty is long, with conditions attached. On tumi.com it runs five years on wheeled luggage and body-worn bags and two years on accessories and small leather goods. Airline and transit damage is covered only in the first year, cosmetic damage never. The terms are “valid on purchases from an authorized TUMI store, dealer or TUMI.com”, and Tumi “reserves the right to reject warranty claims for products purchased from unauthorized sellers, including unauthorized Internet sites”.

The Indian version is issued by the Reliance operator under Mumbai jurisdiction. It opens with five years “after the User(s) purchases a Product from the Website”, or two for wallets, accessories and outerwear, and later says the warranty “only applies to Products that were purchased from an authorized TUMI store or dealer”. Year one covers wear, airline and transit damage; years two to five cover defects and structural parts only.

Neither page says whether a Tumi bought in Dubai or New York will be repaired in Mumbai, or the reverse. tumi.com’s help pages say returns “can only be made within the original country of purchase”, but that line is about returns, not the warranty. Keep the Indian invoice, and ask the seller in writing before relying on a foreign purchase.

A five-year warranty is only as useful as the seller who issues it, and tumi.in’s own terms tie it to an authorised store or dealer.

Checking a Tumi is genuine

Tumi makes a strong claim for its serial plate. tumi.com says the Tracer code “cannot be duplicated, so you can rest assured that you’re carrying a genuine TUMI product”, and its warranty page says registering it “verifies the authenticity of your product”. The same site says not every product carries one, and its registration covers purchases in the US and Canada.

The Indian route does not repeat the authenticity claim. tumi.in’s “Register Your TUMI” link leads to a Singapore form that lists India as a country but describes only lost and stolen item recovery, and the Indian FAQ calls Tracer a “product recovery program”. A fake-website notice on Tumi’s Hungarian site tells buyers to check the list of official sites on tumi.com; it does not mention India.

No list of authorised Indian sellers appeared on any Tumi page read, whether tumi.in’s footer, FAQ and store page or tumi.com’s help and warranty pages. That is a contrast with Casio, which publishes an authorised-seller list in India, as our Casio audit shows. With Tumi, the declaration on the box is the more useful check.

Check 01

Read the importer line

Tumi bags sold on tumi.in name Reliance Brands Limited as importer. A different name is not proof of a fake, but it is a question for the seller.

Check 02

Match the origin

The pages read declared Indonesia, Thailand or China. The Legal Metrology block on the box must name a country of origin, an MRP inclusive of taxes and the importer.

Check 03

Know what the Myntra filter holds

On 22 September 2026 the Tumi brand filter on Myntra held perfume only. For a bag, buying from tumi.in or an authorised Tumi store keeps the warranty conditions met.

Check 04

Keep the Indian invoice

The warranty depends on an authorised store or dealer, and neither warranty page says a foreign purchase is serviced in India.

What the product claims rest on

tumi.com calls its FXT ballistic nylon “virtually abrasion proof versus standard ballistic nylon”, but the pages read give no abrasion figure or yarn weight. The 19 Degree carry-on shell is “at least 70% Recycled Polycarbonate” and linings are “100% Recycled PET”, with no certifier named. The Indian page for the same case says only “Made with a recycled polycarbonate shell”, with no percentage. These are the brand’s descriptions, not test results.

The record in India

The one decided matter about Tumi’s Indian business is the customs appeal above, and it went the distributor’s way. The question was whether marketing money the importer had to commit under its distribution agreements, Tumi’s among them, belonged in the customs value of the goods. On 1 April 2024 CESTAT set aside the order of 29 May 2020 and allowed the appeal. It was a valuation ruling on that matter as it then stood, it says nothing about product quality, and nobody has ruled on anything beyond it.

Samsonite’s Indian arms have won two decrees in Delhi against sellers of counterfeit Samsonite and American Tourister bags, in April 2024 and February 2026, both ex parte because the defendants did not appear. Tumi was named only in the group’s list of brands; neither judgment concerned Tumi goods. Searches of Indian judgments under “Tumi, Inc”, “Tumi luggage” and “Tumi trademark” showed no decided case about counterfeit Tumi goods, and none against Tumi or its Indian distributor on product or consumer grounds. Consumer commission records were not part of that search.

Who Tumi is actually for

Tumi suits a frequent flyer who wants a business bag or carry-on with a long, written warranty and will buy it from the brand’s own Indian channel to keep that warranty intact. At ₹70,000 to ₹95,000 for the pieces read, it is priced well above Indian brands such as Skybags, and a buyer is paying for the name, the materials described and the after-sales promise rather than for any published durability figure.

Common questions

Is Tumi owned by Samsonite?

Yes. Samsonite’s acquisition closed on 1 August 2016 and Tumi has since been an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsonite Group S.A., which is listed in Hong Kong.

Who sells Tumi in India?

tumi.in names a Reliance Brands Luxury Fashion company as its operator, and its product pages name Reliance Brands Limited as importer. A 2024 CESTAT decision records a 2011 distributorship agreement between the operator and Tumi Inc, USA. Samsonite’s Indian company did not sell Tumi on its website on 22 September 2026.

Is Tumi made in India?

None of the six tumi.in product pages read on 22 September 2026 declared India. Two declared Indonesia, three Thailand and one China, although Samsonite owns a factory in Nashik.

Why does Myntra show Tumi perfume but no bags?

On 22 September 2026 all 12 Tumi listings on Myntra were fragrances made by the Fragrance Group, New York, and imported by Global SS Beauty Brands. No bag was listed under the brand filter.

Does the Tumi warranty work in India?

tumi.in offers five years on bags and two on accessories, but only for products bought from an authorised Tumi store or dealer. Neither the Indian nor the US page says whether a bag bought abroad is serviced here.

The FA take

Tumi is easier to trace than most luxury bag brands. Its owner publishes the brand’s sales, the Indian operator is named on the Indian site, and a tribunal record puts a date on the distributorship. For a buyer who wants a long written warranty and will buy from tumi.in or an authorised store, that paper trail is worth something.

The caveats are practical. The five-year warranty depends on buying from an authorised seller, no Indian authorised-seller list appeared on the pages read, and neither warranty page says how a bag bought abroad is handled. The “cannot be duplicated” serial claim is not repeated on the Indian route, which treats Tracer as lost-bag recovery. On Myntra the Tumi name sells perfume at a median ₹3,690, not luggage.

A well-documented ₹70,000 bag, worth buying only where the seller can honour its five-year warranty.
