Safari Brand Audit: It Passed VIP, But Read the Warranty

Safari overtook VIP in FY2026 on both revenue and profit. Its polycarbonate hard luggage is made in India, its soft bags and backpacks are imported, and the five-year warranty it advertises appears in no published policy.

For decades VIP was the default name on Indian luggage. In the year to 31 March 2026 that stopped being true. Safari Industries booked ₹2,047.02 crore against VIP’s ₹1,858.13 crore, and made ₹167.76 crore where VIP lost ₹338.01 crore. Both sets of figures come from audited filings. But the suitcase in front of you is a different question from the balance sheet, and on that question Safari’s own product pages are more honest than its marketing.

The short answer

Safari passed VIP in the year to March 2026 — ₹2,047.02 crore against ₹1,858.13 crore, and a ₹167.76 crore profit against a ₹338.01 crore loss. Its polycarbonate hard luggage really is made in Gujarat and Rajasthan; its soft bags come from China and its backpacks from Bangladesh, and it declares that on every product page. The five-year warranty it advertises appears in no published Safari document.

How it started

Safari’s about page says “Sharing your Safaris since 1974”. The Registrar of Companies gives the incorporation date of Safari Industries (India) Limited as 8 July 1980, and the CIN encodes that year. Both dates are real and they measure different things. What traded as Safari in between, the company does not explain.

The documented part begins in 2011. Sudhir Jatia had spent 22 years in luggage, latterly as Managing Director of VIP Industries. A private equity firm wanted him in at Safari as a minority holder; he refused and bought control himself, taking 41.34% at ₹170 a share in April 2012. In 2015 he added the Genius, Genie and Magnum brands for ₹5.5 crore.

Then he built factories. Halol capacity rose twice in January 2023, taking the group to 5,25,000 pieces a month, and a Jaipur plant began production on 2 December 2024, now making wheels and trolleys in-house. Prices rose 4 to 6% in May 2026 and discounting was pulled back.

Revenue, Safari against VIP (₹ crore)
  • FY2024VIP 2,244.96, Safari 1,550 — VIP ahead by ₹695 crore
  • FY2025VIP 2,178.43, Safari 1,771.58 — VIP ahead by ₹407 crore
  • FY2026VIP 1,858.13, Safari 2,047.02 — Safari ahead by ₹189 crore
  • Q1 FY2027VIP 578.36, Safari 588.58 — Safari ahead again

Safari made ₹167.76 crore in FY2026; VIP lost ₹338.01 crore.

Both companies’ audited filings, year ended 31 March 2026 and quarter ended 30 June 2026.

The counterweight is that FY2026 was a volume year, not a margin year. Safari’s operating margin peaked at 18% in FY2024 and was 13% in both FY2025 and FY2026. Its rival’s loss came largely from a ₹122.66 crore inventory writedown, which is a competitor’s accident rather than Safari’s achievement. In the next quarter Safari’s revenue rose 11.51% while its profit fell 5.43%.

What they actually make

Safari owns its factories, which in this category is unusual enough to state plainly. It also imports a great deal, and the split runs by product type. Its about page admits as much: hard luggage is made in-house at Halol, while soft luggage “is mainly imported by Safari”.

Better still, every Safari product page carries a full Legal Metrology declaration — maker or importer, address and country of origin. Its largest rival’s site carries none. Here is what those declarations said on 31 August 2026.

Product Shell or fabric Declared origin
Safari Hue and Brooklyn hard trolleys Polycarbonate India, made by Safari
Safari SELECT Panorama and Ascent Polyester China, imported
Safari Seek Overnighter backpack Polyester Bangladesh, imported
Genie Sketch 40L backpack Nylon Bangladesh, imported
Urban Jungle Caliber cabin Polycarbonate China, imported

The last row is the one that matters. The Caliber is a polycarbonate hard case, exactly the product Safari says it moulds at Halol, and it is imported — the page even names the Chinese maker, Shanghai Damao-Shine Technical Co Ltd. Anyone choosing Urban Jungle as the Indian company’s premium line is buying a Chinese-made bag. Credit where it is due: Safari says so, in full, where the rival publishes nothing.

What Safari costs in India

The MRP is a marketing device, not a price. Nothing on Safari’s own sites sold at MRP on 31 August 2026, and the discount is permanent rather than seasonal — the same standing discount that makes a Campus sneaker’s printed MRP meaningless, and that our Sparx audit documents in the same terms.

Printed MRP, Safari Hue cabin

Price actually charged

Across the range that day, hard luggage ran from ₹3,299 for the Hue cabin to ₹8,499 for a SELECT Aerolite. Imported soft luggage cost more for less Indian content: the Ascent laptop trolley at ₹6,999, the Phoenix at ₹9,999. Discounts ranged from 4% to 61%, shallower than its main rival’s 85% the same day.

Who Safari is actually for

Safari is a mid-market brand that has stopped pretending otherwise. Its own presentation claims a dominant share of the mid and economy segment, and the prices bear that out — the core hard luggage line sells between ₹3,299 and ₹6,315.

The house of brands is cleanly separated, which is rare here. Genie sits under ₹2,800, Safari and Safari SELECT hold ₹2,900 to ₹10,000, and Urban Jungle, launched in 2023 under Tanisha Jatia, runs ₹3,995 to ₹13,995. The largest rival funnels five brands into one shop in overlapping bands, so you are less likely to buy the same bag twice here under two names.

Soft luggage costs more for an imported bag on the same terms. And buying for a schoolchild, note that Genie’s ₹1,099 to ₹1,699 backpacks carry a stated twelve-month cover, not five years.

Reputation and controversies

Safari advertises a five-year warranty. The homepage carries the badge, the Brooklyn page states it, and Urban Jungle promises a “5 Year International Warranty” on the Caliber. The policy Safari actually publishes states no duration at all, for any product.

Safari’s warranty policy names wheels, zips, trolleys and fabric — as the four parts it does not cover.

Where it appears What it says
Safari homepage badge 5 year warranty
Brooklyn hard trolley page 5-year warranty
Urban Jungle, Caliber page 5 Year International Warranty, defects only
Genie backpacks 12 Month International Warranty
The published policy “for the period specified in the authorized Warranty Card” — no years given

The policy covers defects in materials or workmanship. It then says “certain component parts such as wheels, zippers, trolleys, fabric etc. will show wear and tear” and that this “is not covered”. It also excludes zip bursts, cracks, dents, transit damage and any repair Safari did not carry out, and runs to the first purchaser only. So the badge covers a shell cracking from a moulding fault, not the wheel that seizes, the zip that bursts or the handle that jams — the three things that end a suitcase’s life.

One decided matter sits on the record. On 15 October 2024 the Assistant Excise and Taxation Officer at Sonipat, Haryana passed a demand order on Safari under section 129(3) of the CGST Act for ₹1,95,032, over a mismatch in an e-way bill. Safari disclosed it and reported no material impact. That is a paperwork penalty of under ₹2 lakh against a company earning ₹2,047 crore, and deserves no more weight.

How CARLTON reached Safari
  1. VIP IndustriesAcquires Carlton International plc’s trademark rights, 2004
  2. Delhi High CourtEarly July 2025 — VIP’s appeal dismissed, injunction on bags upheld
  3. VIP’s own brand listCarlton is absent from the company’s brand list
  4. Safari IndustriesTwenty-year India licence signed 18 February 2026

A Division Bench held that goodwill attaches to a mark rather than a product category, and that a passing-off action needs goodwill inside India. Safari was not a party, and that order decided the use of one mark in India on the case as it then stood in July 2025. It is not a standing ban reaching any other brand, and no finding was made about any product. Seven months later Safari licensed CARLTON for India in Class 18 from Carlton Retail Private Limited, a Delhi company incorporated in 2018 and not the party to that appeal. The terms deserve a second read: twenty years with a further twenty-year option, a royalty of the higher of ₹45 lakh a year or 5% of net sales, and a ₹99.50 crore interest-free refundable deposit — a little under 60% of Safari’s entire FY2026 profit, for the right to use a name. No Carlton product was on sale on its sites as at 31 August 2026.

Buying it in India

GST on suitcases is 18% under HSN 4202, unchanged after the September 2025 revisions. There is no anti-dumping duty on luggage and no Quality Control Order making a BIS mark compulsory, so imported bags pay ordinary customs duty plus IGST and nothing more. This industry was not built behind a trade barrier, unlike the domestic manufacturing our Bata audit describes.

Check 01

Find the Legal Metrology block

Scroll past the marketing to the small print naming the importer or manufacturer, the address and the country of origin. It is the only origin claim on a listing that carries legal weight.

Check 02

Do not read origin off the material

Polycarbonate under the Safari name is Indian, but Urban Jungle’s polycarbonate Caliber is Chinese. The shell does not tell you the country; only the declaration does.

Check 03

Open the warranty card in the first week

The duration lives on a card inside the bag, not in the policy. Read it while you can still return the bag, and have the dealer stamp it — an unstamped card is not valid.

Check 04

Treat the MRP as noise

An ₹8,140 sticker on a bag that has sold at ₹3,299 all year tells you nothing. Compare what two or three sellers actually charge on one day and ignore the crossed-out figure.

Check 05

Buy the wheels you can live with

Wheels, zips and trolleys are excluded as wear. Roll the case loaded in the shop, and pick the bag whose hardware you would still accept unrepaired in year three.

Worth knowing

Safari does not publish how much of what it sells it makes itself. Judge each bag by the origin line on its own page rather than by the company’s factory story.

Safari counts roughly 8,800 touchpoints, and the same model carries different prices on the same day, exactly as at the footwear chains our Mochi audit covers. The bag is identical; the discount is not.

Common questions

Is Safari an Indian brand?

Yes, and unusually so. Safari Industries (India) Limited is a standalone listed company with no foreign parent and no private equity owner. Sudhir Jatia’s promoter group held 44.70% at 30 June 2026.

Are Safari bags made in India?

Some are. Safari-branded polycarbonate hard luggage declares India. Soft luggage declares China, backpacks declare Bangladesh, and Urban Jungle’s Caliber declares China — all on Safari’s own product pages.

Does Safari really give a five-year warranty?

The badge says five years; the published policy states no duration and points to a card inside the box. It excludes wear on wheels, zips, trolleys and fabric by name, plus zip bursts and cracks, and covers only the first owner.

Is Safari bigger than VIP now?

On revenue and profit, yes, for the year to 31 March 2026 — ₹2,047.02 crore and a ₹167.76 crore profit against ₹1,858.13 crore and a ₹338.01 crore loss. FY2025 went the other way, so this is one year, not an era.

Is Urban Jungle a Safari brand?

Yes. Urban Jungle launched in 2023 and its site carries Safari’s own CIN. Genie, Genius and Magnum are Safari’s too, bought in 2015. Carlton is licensed for India, not owned.

The FA take

Buy the Indian-made polycarbonate. At ₹3,299 to ₹5,899 for a hard cabin or medium case, Safari does what almost nobody here does — moulds the shell in its own plant and prints where it came from on the page you buy it from. Its biggest rival publishes no origin at all.

Be sceptical of two things. The five-year warranty is a badge, not a policy: the published document sets no duration and lists wheels, zips, trolleys and fabric as uncovered wear. And FY2026 was a volume win on a 13% margin, well off its 18% peak, against a rival writing off ₹122.66 crore of stock — a quarter later Safari’s own profit was down 5.43%.

Buy Safari hard, cabin-sized and Indian-made, at the price it charges rather than the one it prints — and assume the cover stops at the shell.
