COSRX, the Seoul skincare brand now owned by Amorepacific, names one authorised seller in India on its own website: Nykaa. Its 100 ml snail essence is the hero product, and this audit sets out who owns the brand, who makes it and what it costs here.
COSRX has been consolidated into Amorepacific’s results since the second quarter of 2024. Its 100 ml snail essence sells at ₹1,267 on Nykaa on 3 September 2026 — about 6% under Korean list at MRP and 37.5% under the American price. The brand’s store list names Nykaa for India. Indian packs that print a declaration name Botera Ecommerce LLP of Mumbai as importer.

How it started
COSRX was founded in 2013. Its older About page still names Jun Sang Hun as founder and chief executive and gives 16 December 2013 as the incorporation date — the brand’s own account rather than a register entry. Amorepacific, which now owns it, describes it as “a first-generation indie beauty brand founded in 2013, one that gained international recognition before it was even widely known at home in Korea”.
That last clause is the growth story in one line. Recognition abroad before recognition at home is what an internet-led brand looks like from the inside, and it comes from the owner rather than from folklore. COSRX’s own communications manager, Hyein Lee, told a Los Angeles trade outlet that early advertising spend was minimal and the brand instead gifted products to content creators, because “recommendations came from an organic source people could trust”. By 2023 the snail essence was the eighth most-sold beauty item on Amazon in the United States.
The commonly repeated version credits Reddit. Nothing on the record supports Reddit specifically. What is sourced is creator gifting, short-video platforms and Amazon ranking.
The economics were remarkable before anyone bought it. Amorepacific’s own announcement records COSRX revenue of ₩204.4 billion in 2022, then ₩190.2 billion of sales in the first half of 2023 on ₩71.7 billion of operating profit — a 37.7% operating margin on those figures, the year Amorepacific agreed to buy the rest of it.

- ₩755.1 billion for the last 288,000 sharesAnnounced 30 October 2023, expected to reach 93.2%
- Consolidated into Amorepacific’s resultsFrom the second quarter of 2024, in the company’s own words
No Amorepacific disclosure gives a closing date for that purchase. The consolidation quarter is the only completion the company has ever published, and 93.2% was the expected holding in 2023, not a confirmed figure since.
The internet’s favourite indie skincare brand has been part of a Seoul-listed group since 2024, consolidated into Amorepacific’s results from the second quarter.
What they actually make
One product carries the brand. The Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence sells in 30 ml, 50 ml and 100 ml, and COSRX claims over 46 million bottles sold. Around it sit the Advanced Snail 92 cream, The 6 Peptide booster, The Retinol 0.1 and 0.3, Pure Fit Cica, two cleansers, two sunscreens and a set of masks — 34 listings on Nykaa on 3 September 2026.
On the one Indian listing read that names a manufacturer, the maker is Corea Cosmedical Center Co. of Cheonan, a Korean contract manufacturer. One declaration is not a pattern and this page does not claim one, but it does show the brand and the maker can be separate companies. It is the same distinction a reader meets with Bata, where the listed Indian company and the global name are separate things, and the opposite of Campus, which runs its own plants and says so.
On substantiation, COSRX publishes more than most imported skincare. Its essence page names a laboratory, names its instruments and gives panel sizes — which is more than the average sunscreen or serum sold in India offers.
| Claim on the brand’s own page | What is published behind it |
|---|---|
| “Clinically proven to repair the skin barrier” | 68 days on 87 participants, plus a second study run 26 May to 10 June 2025 on 20 adults, both by Dermacosmetic Skin Science Laboratory, Korea |
| “−80.23% reduction in redness” | Measured on an Antera 3D imaging system |
| “32.12% improvement in skin smoothness” | Measured on a Visioscan |
| “9.64% increase in skin transparency” | Measured on a Skin Glossymeter |
| “+196.17% increase in skin moisture” | No instrument named; a percentage change from a baseline that is not stated |
| “No snails are harmed” | The page does not cite a method or a certifier |
| SPF 50+ on two sunscreens sold in India | The product pages do not cite a test method, standard, laboratory or measured value |
The 87-participant study carries no date on the page, and none of the results links to a full report. For an Indian buyer, the evidence sits on cosrx.com rather than on the Indian listings where the purchase happens.
The study details behind the essence’s claims are published on cosrx.com rather than on the Indian listings where the purchase happens.
What COSRX costs in India
Korea is the comparison that matters here, not America. Converted at the Federal Reserve’s H.10 rates for 28 August 2026 — ₹95.38 and ₩1,379.41 to the dollar, so ₩1,000 works out at ₹69.15 — the Indian MRP lands under the Korean one.
- Korea, list and selling price
- ₩23,000 for 100 ml = ₹1,590 (₹15.90/ml)
- India, MRP on Nykaa
- ₹1,490 for 100 ml (₹14.90/ml)
- Gap
- 6.3% cheaper in India
- Checked on
- 3 September 2026
Against the United States the gap is wider. COSRX charges $25 for the same 100 ml bottle on its own site, or ₹2,385 — ₹23.85 per millilitre. India’s MRP is 37.5% below that, and at Nykaa’s actual selling price of ₹1,267 the Indian buyer pays 47% less than the American one and 20% less than Korean list. For a product that has crossed a border, cleared duty and paid an importer’s margin, that is an unusual result.
Two cautions belong beside it. First, these are prices from one day, 3 September 2026, and Amorepacific’s own 2025 results say COSRX “returned to revenue growth in the fourth quarter”, so the brand’s trading, and its discounts, can move. Second, the MRP differs by listing: Nykaa printed ₹1,490 for the 100 ml essence on 3 September 2026 while 1mg and Limese both declared ₹1,450 for the same bottle on the same day.
MRP is not the price either. Nineteen of the twenty COSRX products visible on Nykaa that day carried discounts of 5% to 15%, the Balancium lip mask at ₹2,000 being the only one at full price. That gap between printed and paid is the one documented on Metro — never buy on the strike-through.
Who COSRX is actually for
The core Advanced Snail line runs ₹638 for the mucin gel cleanser, ₹1,267 for the 100 ml essence and ₹1,400 for the 92 cream at selling prices on 3 September 2026. That is mid-range skincare in India: dearer than a domestic drugstore label, well below prestige counters. It suits a buyer assembling a simple routine of a cleanser, a hydrating essence and a moisturiser.
The actives are a different proposition. The Retinol 0.3 cream is ₹2,340 and the Advanced Snail Radiance Dual Essence ₹2,520. Nykaa’s product titles do not carry pack sizes, so the 100 ml essence is the only Indian COSRX product here with a per-millilitre figure — ₹12.67. Comparing a 30 ml bottle against a 100 ml one on headline price compares nothing.
Reputation and controversies
On animal testing, the published positions differ. PETA’s directory, read on 3 September 2026, states that COSRX “may not be cruelty-free” and that the company has not signed its statement of assurance. COSRX’s About pages make no animal-testing statement at all. Its parent, Amorepacific, has published an internal ban since 2008 and extended it to partners in 2013, and its sister brand Innisfree is listed by PETA as cruelty-free.
Then there is the snail. “COSRX collects mucin naturally without applying pressure or harm to the snails” appeared on the hero product’s page on 3 September 2026; the page does not cite a method or certifier for it. It is a statement about how the ingredient is collected rather than about the product’s results.
Buying it in India
Every cosmetic imported into India must be registered before it lands — Rule 12(1) of the Cosmetics Rules 2020, notified by GSR 426(E). The application is form COS-1 and the certificate is form COS-2, with COS-4 covering an additional import number and COS-12 a new cosmetic. The certificate carries an RC/COS number and it is held by the Indian importer or authorised agent, never by the Korean brand. A buyer can ask the seller for that number before paying.
Of five Indian channels checked on 3 September 2026, two print a full statutory declaration and both name the same importer: Botera Ecommerce LLP of Mumbai. A declared importer is what the law asks for.
- Corea Cosmedical Center Co.Cheonan, Korea — declared maker on the one Indian pack read
- COSRX inc., SeoulThe brand; Amorepacific-controlled since 2024
- Botera Ecommerce LLPSewree, Mumbai — importer and marketer of record
- The bottle you buy₹1,267 against ₹1,490 MRP on Nykaa, 3 September 2026
The maker and the importer are named on the pack declaration rather than on the brand’s own pages.
Ask the seller for the registration number
The certificate carries an RC/COS number and the Indian importer holds it. Ask for it before you pay.
Read the importer line on the box
Indian packs must declare manufacturer, packer and importer. On the COSRX listings that carry one, the importer is Botera Ecommerce LLP, Mumbai. No importer named, no purchase.
Check the brand’s own store list first
COSRX publishes its authorised sellers by country. For India it names Nykaa.
Treat an approval badge as a badge
An approval graphic on a listing does not show the registration number itself. Ask the seller for the number.
Divide by the pack size
The 100 ml essence at ₹1,267 works out at ₹12.67 per millilitre. A 30 ml bottle at ₹850 is nearly ₹28. Check the pack size before comparing headline prices.
An importer of record is printed on the pack, and a brand name and the company behind a given shelf can differ, as Liberty‘s retail history also shows.
Common questions
Who owns COSRX?
Amorepacific Corporation, listed on the Korea Exchange under code 090430. It took a minority stake in September 2021, announced on 30 October 2023 that it was buying the remaining 288,000 shares for ₩755.1 billion to reach an expected 93.2%, and has consolidated COSRX into its own results since the second quarter of 2024.
Is COSRX cheaper in India than in Korea?
At MRP, yes — the 100 ml snail essence is ₹1,490 here against ₩23,000, or ₹1,590, in Seoul on 3 September 2026, about 6% cheaper. At Nykaa’s selling price of ₹1,267 the gap widens to roughly 20%. Against the American price of $25 it is 37.5% cheaper at MRP.
Is it fine to buy COSRX from a seller other than Nykaa?
COSRX names Nykaa as its only authorised Indian seller and states that it cannot guarantee the safety or quality of products bought outside its authorised channels. Whichever seller you use, the pack should carry an importer declaration, and the seller can be asked for the registration number.
Does COSRX make its own products?
On the one Indian pack read that names a manufacturer, the maker is Corea Cosmedical Center Co. of Cheonan, a Korean contract manufacturer. That is a single declaration rather than a pattern, but it shows the brand and the factory can be separate companies.
Is COSRX cruelty-free?
PETA’s directory says COSRX “may not be cruelty-free” because the company has not signed its statement of assurance. Its parent Amorepacific has an internal ban dating to 2008 and its sister brand Innisfree is listed, which shows that certification is applied for brand by brand.
Did COSRX really blow up on Reddit?
Nothing on the record supports Reddit specifically. What the brand’s own manager describes is minimal advertising spend and product gifting to creators, alongside very large short-video hashtag counts and an Amazon best-seller position in the United States in early 2023.

On price and on published evidence, COSRX is good value in India. The 100 ml essence is 6% under Korean list at MRP and 37.5% under the American price, and at ₹1,267 on Nykaa it is one of the few imported serums that does not punish an Indian buyer. It also names a laboratory, names its instruments and gives panel sizes, which most brands on the same shelf do not.
On where to buy, the brand’s store list names Nykaa for India, and the pack’s importer line and registration number are the details to check with any seller. The sunscreen pages state SPF 50+ without a test method, so buyers who want that detail will not find it there.
Good value: buy the 100 ml essence from the seller the brand names for India, or ask any other seller for the registration number before you pay.
