Grand Seiko sells watches in India from ₹2,60,000 to ₹40,00,000, through four salons in Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai. Its international service network, checked on 31 August 2026, lists one Indian address, in Kochi. On a watch the brand wants overhauled every three to four years, the service route is worth asking about before you buy.
On 31 August 2026 Grand Seiko’s Indian prices averaged 12.65% below the American list across nine references, and about 14.8% above Japan’s. The brand recommends an overhaul every three to four years; its service network lists one Indian address, in Kochi, and publishes no service price, so ask the salon about the overhaul route.

How it started
The first Grand Seiko arrived in 1960 with Caliber 3180, which the brand says passed an in-house process “equivalent to” the superior grade of the Swiss chronometer standard. In-house, and equivalent to — it has never claimed the watch was certified by anybody else. In 1966 it wrote its own precision standard, tightened in 1969 to +5 to −3 seconds a day, still the number on the spec sheet.
- 1960First Grand Seiko, Caliber 3180, certified in-house
- 1967The 44GS sets the house style; Neuchâtel places Daini 2nd
- 1968Geneva trials — Suwa takes 4th to 10th place
- 1993Caliber 9F quartz, ±10 seconds a year
- 2017Separated as a brand on 24 March; the Seiko logo leaves the dial
Grand Seiko calls those Geneva placings the highest ranking for a mechanical wristwatch movement, not a win. It dates the 44GS to 1967, though 1968 is widely repeated.
What they actually make
Grand Seiko sells three engines at overlapping prices, and intuition gets all three wrong. Quartz is not the cheap option here. It is the accurate one.
| Movement | Best published accuracy | Cheapest in India |
|---|---|---|
| 9F quartz, from 1993 | ±10 seconds a year | ₹2,60,000 (SBGX265) |
| 9S mechanical, from 1998 | +5 to −3 seconds a day | ₹5,10,000 (SBGM257) |
| 9R Spring Drive, from 2004 | ±20 seconds a year (U.F.A.) | ₹9,90,000 (SBGY043) |

Spring Drive is what many buyers come for, and it is often misunderstood. It is mechanical — mainspring, gear train, no battery — but it has no escapement. The mainspring drives a rotor called the glide wheel, which turns eight times a second and generates a small current. That current runs a quartz oscillator at 32,768 Hz and an integrated circuit, which compares the reference signal against the wheel’s speed and applies an electromagnetic brake when it runs quick. Grand Seiko calls those three flows the Tri-synchro Regulator.
A brake can only subtract, so there is no tick and the seconds hand glides. You get a mechanical watch keeping far better time than mechanical watches can, with 72 to 192 hours of reserve. You give up accuracy against quartz, and any local watchmaker’s ability to regulate it.
The cheapest Grand Seiko sold in India is also the most accurate watch the brand makes, by a margin nothing else in the catalogue comes near.
A ₹9,90,000 Spring Drive at ±15 seconds a month is eighteen times less accurate than the ₹2,60,000 quartz SBGX265 at ±10 seconds a year. Even the U.F.A. Spring Drive at ±20 seconds a year and ₹11,00,000 is half as accurate as a movement launched in 1993. Both figures are Grand Seiko’s own, and our analogue versus digital comparison explains why quartz wins that fight.
What Grand Seiko costs in India
We compared nine references on Grand Seiko’s own Indian, American and Japanese sites, stripping 18% GST and 10% Japanese consumption tax, at ₹95.70 to the dollar. India came below the United States on every one.
- US list, SBGJ277 Hi-Beat GMT
- ₹7,27,320 ($7,600)
- Indian MRP
- ₹7,20,000, including GST
- Indian price, tax stripped
- ₹6,10,169

Across all nine, India averages 12.65% below the American list, from a ₹2,60,000 quartz watch to a ₹15,00,000 chronograph, with a spread of only 7.1 points. Plain Seiko, sold here by the same subsidiary, swings across 24.6 points and changes sign. Same company, same country, two brands priced on different patterns.
Duty is charged on a watch’s landed import value, not its shelf price, so the headline rate does not pass through to the shelf in full. On the same references, India ran 14.8% above Japan and the United States 31.5% above Japan.
The boutique never discounts, and once a watch is delivered and accepted there is no refund — a defect must be raised within 48 hours.
Who Grand Seiko is actually for
On price Grand Seiko sits with Omega and Rolex, and on published accuracy its cheapest watch beats both: the ₹2,60,000 SBGX265 is about seventy times more accurate than a Rolex at −2 to +2 seconds a day. The catch is that it is quartz, which many buyers at this price do not want.
On mechanical accuracy it is more modest: an eight-second band, against Rolex’s four seconds and Omega’s five. So buy the 9F quartz for the most accurate watch in the room and a battery every three years, a 9S mechanical for finishing better than almost anything at the price, or Spring Drive for the glide. If none of that moves you, our watch coverage starts at ₹695.
Reputation and controversies
Grand Seiko calls itself a true manufacture, responsible for every stage of its watchmaking. That is true of the brand, not of any single company. Its own Shinshu Watch Studio page places that studio inside a Seiko Epson facility, and Seiko Epson is separately listed rather than a Seiko Group subsidiary. The mechanical watches come from a third firm in Iwate, so the stages sit with more than one company.
The accuracy claim survives checking. The Grand Seiko Standard allows +5 to −3 seconds a day, tested in six positions and three temperatures on the bare movement before it leaves the factory. COSC allows −4 to +6 — a ten-second band against Grand Seiko’s eight, measured the same way.
Three caveats belong with it. Grand Seiko never mentions COSC, so the comparison above is ours, from two published specifications. The brand publishes no number of testing days. And COSC is an independent third party, while the Grand Seiko Standard is applied by Grand Seiko to its own watches: a tighter number, verified in-house.
Seiko India’s notice of 6 October 2025 warns about counterfeits and “Seiko mod” watches, but gives no serial check and no verification portal. The channel is your only protection.
Buying it in India
Grand Seiko India lists eighteen points of sale, four of them full salons: two in Bengaluru, one in Delhi, one in Mumbai. The rest are Seiko boutiques and named retailers in Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Noida and Pune. Seiko Watch India Private Limited sells both brands.
For service, Grand Seiko’s international network lists one Indian address, a service centre in Kochi, which also appears on Seiko India’s list of eleven service centres. That list does not mention Grand Seiko or Spring Drive by name. The brand’s own American service facility says some work is sent to Japan.
No page read says whether a Spring Drive is fully overhauled inside India or sent to Japan. Ask the salon before you pay, and allow for the time and shipping.
Buy from the published list
The brand publishes no authentication tells, so its list of eighteen outlets is your defence. A “Grand Seiko mod” is never a Grand Seiko.
Make them stamp the card
The five-year worldwide warranty needs the retailer’s stamp and the purchase date. Without both it is void.
Treat a discount as a warning
A ₹5,10,000 SBGM257 offered at ₹2,00,000 by an unknown seller is not a bargain.
Ignore the extra letter
India lists SBGX265, the American site SBGX265G. Same watch, different market code.
A Grand Seiko bought abroad and carried home has to be declared if it exceeds the duty-free allowance. The allowance and the rate are set by the Baggage Rules 2026, so check the current figures with customs before counting any saving. Indian service runs through the same listed network either way.
Common questions
Where do I get a Grand Seiko serviced in India?
Grand Seiko lists one Indian address, in Kochi, and sends service enquiries to Seiko India’s support portal. Ask the salon where your watch goes, and what that costs.
Is Grand Seiko a separate company from Seiko?
No. It was separated as a brand on 24 March 2017, when the Seiko logo left the dial. There is no Grand Seiko company; the Indian seller is Seiko Watch India Private Limited.
Is Spring Drive Grand Seiko’s most accurate movement?
No. The 9F quartz from 1993 runs to ±10 seconds a year, standard Spring Drive to ±15 seconds a month, and the top U.F.A. version ±20 seconds a year at four times the price.
Is Grand Seiko cheaper abroad?
In Japan, yes, by roughly 15% before duty. In the United States, no — its prices ran 9% to 16% above Indian ones on 31 August 2026.

The watches are excellent and the Indian pricing is fair — 12.65% under the American list across nine references, with a 7.1-point spread that shows a policy rather than guesswork. The ₹2,60,000 SBGX265 quartz is the most accurate watch in almost any room.
The question to settle before buying is servicing. Grand Seiko sells an ₹11,00,000 Spring Drive in Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai, recommends an overhaul every three to four years, and lists a service centre in Kochi as its Indian address, with no service price published. Ask the salon about the overhaul route.
Worth buying with your eyes open: get the overhaul route and its cost from the salon in writing first, because over twenty years the ₹2,60,000 quartz that needs a battery is a more sensible watch than the ₹9,90,000 Spring Drive that needs a workshop.
