Urban Monkey is a Mumbai streetwear brand best known for caps, along with wallets, T-shirts, shirts and backpacks. It was started by Yash Gangwal, grew out of India’s skate and hip-hop scene, and appeared on the first season of Shark Tank India.

Unlike most brands in this price range, it barely discounts. Across the 16 Urban Monkey products we track, the typical piece sold for ₹1,599, only 11% below its MRP. That makes it an expensive cap, and an honest price tag.

The short answer

Urban Monkey is a genuine Mumbai brand run by Urban Monkey Private Limited, and its caps sell for a typical ₹1,549 at a median discount of just 11%. You are paying for the street-culture brand and the design, so a ₹1,500 cap is only worth it if you care about those. Where it is made depends on the item: one cap we checked said China, two other items said India.

How it started

Yash Gangwal started Urban Monkey in Mumbai, with sources dating it to 2013 or 2014. It began with headwear and skateboards, aimed at underground artists, rappers and athletes, and it built its name inside that scene.

In Season 1 of Shark Tank India, Gangwal asked for ₹1 crore for 1% of the company, which implied a ₹100 crore valuation. He left without a deal. In May 2024, the brand joined Myntra’s Rising Stars programme for Indian direct-to-consumer labels, bringing more than 170 styles to the platform.

Worth knowing

Published sales figures for Urban Monkey conflict and come from weak sources, so this page does not rely on them. The ₹100 crore valuation was the founder’s ask on television, not a value any investor paid.

What they actually make

Caps are half of our list, eight of 16 products, followed by wallets, T-shirts and a shirt. It also sells backpacks, pullovers, denim and shorts.

Where a piece is made varies. On 30 October 2026, an embroidered cap on Myntra listed China as the country of origin and named Arya Designs with a Hong Kong address. A baseball cap and a printed 3M Thinsulate item listed India, and named Urban Monkey Private Limited, Bhumi World Industrial Park, Pimplas. Since China-made and India-made pieces sit side by side, check the listing if that matters to you.

A ₹1,550 cap is expensive, but at least the tag is close to what you actually pay.

Urban Monkey belongs with the brands that hold their prices, such as Snitch and The Souled Store, and well away from the labels that print ₹2,000 MRPs on ₹500 clothes. Its price is the price, which is unusual. On our list, a typical Bewakoof piece sells for about half as much.

Who Urban Monkey is actually for

It suits buyers who follow Indian skate, hip-hop and street culture, and who want a cap or wallet from a brand that belongs to that scene. If the design matters to you, ₹1,500 can be reasonable.

It is hard to justify if you only want a cap to keep off the sun, because plain caps cost a fraction of this. It is also not a value play: the price is close to the MRP almost everywhere.

Reputation and controversies

Urban Monkey has a strong identity and a lot of attention, thanks in part to Shark Tank India. The Sharks passed on it, and the valuation Gangwal asked for was never tested by an investor there.

Some profiles repeat claims such as India’s largest headwear brand, and net-worth figures that conflict with one another. We could not confirm them, and buyers should read them as marketing rather than as facts.

Buying it in India

Check 01

Check the origin on each cap

Some caps list China and others list India. If that matters to you, read Product Details before you pay.

Check 02

Buy from Urban Monkey directly

Its own website or listings sold by Urban Monkey Private Limited on Myntra are the safe route.

Check 03

Compare the site and Myntra

Three items we checked sold for ₹1,097 to ₹1,439 on Myntra, below the typical price on our list. Check both.

Check 04

Be wary of big discounts

A median 11% off is normal. A very cheap Urban Monkey cap from an unknown seller deserves suspicion.

The FA take

Urban Monkey is a real Mumbai street-culture brand with one rare virtue: an honest price tag, at a median 11% below MRP.

It is still a ₹1,500 cap. You are paying for an identity, not for the cloth, and the Sharks’ refusal to invest at ₹100 crore is a reminder that attention is not the same as scale. Check the origin too, because some caps are made in China.

Buy Urban Monkey if you belong to the culture it speaks to; if you just want a cap, spend ₹300.
