Ask an Indian makeup buyer to name one prestige lipstick and the answer is usually MAC’s Ruby Woo. Ask where MAC comes from and most people will say America, which is wrong. Ask where to buy it online and, since 15 December 2025, the brand’s own site has an answer few expected: maccosmetics.in “has permanently discontinued accepting orders”.
This audit traces the brand from Toronto to the Lauder family’s New York conglomerate, checks Indian prices against the US and UK line by line, and does the arithmetic on a ₹280 “MAC” foundation.
MAC was founded in Toronto in 1984 and has belonged fully to New York’s Estée Lauder Companies since 1998. On three hero products checked on 2 September 2026, Indian MRPs ran from 9% below to 16% above US list prices, and roughly 20% below the UK. The brand’s own India webstore permanently stopped taking orders on 15 December 2025; the authorised online shelves we could verify are Tira and Sephora India.

How it started
M·A·C — Make-up Art Cosmetics — was created in Toronto in 1984 by Frank Toskan, a make-up artist and photographer, and Frank Angelo, a hair-salon owner. It began as a professional’s toolkit: colours built for photographers, models and artists, sold by working make-up artists. RuPaul fronted its VIVA GLAM campaign; the tagline is still “All Ages, All Races, All Genders”.
The independence is now historical. Estée Lauder bought a majority interest in 1994 — its own heritage page says “majority”, and the widely repeated “51%” appears nowhere in the primary record. Angelo died in 1997, aged 50, and Estée Lauder completed the acquisition the next year.

The artist brand has answered to a New York conglomerate for nearly three decades.
That owner deserves a look. The Estée Lauder Companies trades on the NYSE, and the Lauder family controls 82% of its voting power after a November 2025 share sale. The year to 30 June 2026 brought net sales of $15,049 million, up 5%, and a profit of $0.50 per diluted share — against a loss of $3.15 a share on sales of $14,326 million the year before. M·A·C sits on the right side of that swing: the group puts the brand’s higher sales down to shipments for a March 2026 launch in selected US Sephora doors, a year after naming it for weaker face-product sales and retailer destocking. Prestige is a market position, not a statement of corporate health.
In India the brand is run by ELCA Cosmetics Private Limited, incorporated in Delhi on 10 January 2000, with FY2024 revenue in the ₹750–1,000 crore band per the corporate-records service Tofler. A global name fronted locally by a separate company is a structure Indian shoppers know from footwear — our Bata audit covers the best-known example.
What they actually make
The Indian range is wide: Tira listed 910 MAC items on 2 September 2026 — MACximal, Powder Kiss and Retro Matte lipsticks, Studio Fix foundations and powders, Fix+ sprays, paint pots, liners and Skinfinish highlighters. Sephora India carried 164 the same day. The shade claims are genuinely large: “67 shades” on Studio Fix Fluid, “40 Artist-appoved shades” — the typo is the brand’s — on MACximal.
The wear claims deserve more scrutiny. Studio Fix Fluid carries “24HR” in its name, MACximal promises “12 hours of non-fading, long-lasting colour”, and Pro Longwear Paint Pot says its colour “lasts for 24 hours”. On every product page we read on 2 September 2026, the substantiation published beside these numbers was: none. No lab, no panel size, no protocol. We do not say the claims are false — only that the pages offer nothing to check them against.
Who makes MAC, and where, is the question the listings will not answer. We read five MAC listings in full on Tira; not one displayed a country of origin, an importer’s name or a manufacturer. Estée Lauder describes itself as a manufacturer, and nothing we read claims manufacturing in India — but no “made in” line appears here because none could be read. Brands that make their own products, the way Campus does in footwear, are the exception.
None of the five MAC listings we checked online carried the importer, manufacturer or country-of-origin declaration. That declaration is mandatory on the pack itself — ask to see the box before you pay.
What MAC costs in India
We priced three hero products like-for-like on 2 September 2026: India MRP on Tira against list prices on MAC’s own US and UK sites, converted at ₹95.38 to the dollar (Federal Reserve H.10 rate for 28 August 2026).
| Product | India MRP | US list, in ₹ |
|---|---|---|
| MACximal Matte Lipstick, Ruby Woo, 3.5 g | ₹2,550 | ₹2,385 ($25) — India +7% |
| Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15, 30 ml | ₹3,400 | ₹3,720 ($39) — India −9% |
| Pro Longwear Paint Pot, 5 g | ₹3,100 | ₹2,671 ($28) — India +16% |
India prices from Tira, US from maccosmetics.com, UK from maccosmetics.co.uk; all checked 2 September 2026.
Against UK list prices the gap reverses: the lipstick is 21% cheaper in India, the foundation 23%, and only the paint pot 9% dearer. The MRP comparison even understates it. Indian MRPs include 18% GST while US shelf prices exclude sales tax; strip the GST and India is below the US on all three. Part of the arithmetic is currency — at ₹95.38 to the dollar, US prices convert to more rupees than they once did.
Despite a 20% import duty, MAC costs no more in India than it does in America — and less than it does in Britain.
That duty is real: tariff databases carry a 20% basic customs duty on lip make-up, doubled in the 2018 Budget, plus surcharge and IGST — roughly 44% in import taxes, most of the IGST creditable. Parity despite that stack means Indian prices are set off wholesale values and a chosen margin, not duty stacked on US retail.
Within the shelf, the smallest packs carry the steepest rates: the lip pencil works out to ₹1,586 per gram, the Skinfinish highlighter ₹444, Studio Fix Fluid ₹113 per ml. MRP and the price charged also part ways here, a gap our Mochi audit documents on footwear shelves: on the day we checked, Tira sold Ruby Woo at ₹1,912 against its ₹2,550 MRP — 25% off, and 20% below MAC’s own US price.
- Fix+ spray, 30 ml (Tira)
- ₹1,600 — ₹53 per ml
- Fix+ spray, 100 ml (Tira)
- ₹2,300 — ₹23 per ml
- Small-bottle premium
- 2.3 times the per-ml rate

Who MAC is actually for
On its Indian prices, MAC is a premium-tier buy, not a luxury one: the core line runs from ₹1,150 for a mini lipstick to ₹4,000 for a Skinfinish, with the big sellers between ₹2,550 and ₹3,400. You are paying for a professional-heritage formula, an unusually wide shade run and a counter artist to match you.
The minis change the maths less than you would think. The 1.7 g MACximal mini costs ₹676 per gram against the full size’s ₹729 at MRP — but at Tira’s ₹1,912 selling price the full size drops to ₹546. Buy the mini to test a shade, the full size to wear it.
Reputation and controversies
On animal testing, three pages read on 2 September 2026 say three different things. PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies directory lists MAC under “does test on animals” — wording that covers testing directly, through suppliers, or selling where authorities require tests. Estée Lauder’s policy page says “We don’t test our products on animals and we don’t ask others to test for us”, qualified in the next breath by “Some regulatory bodies require the testing of our products or ingredients on animals”. And MAC’s long-standing animal-testing web address now opens an ingredients page with no animal-testing statement at all. MAC makes no cruelty-free claim we could find; beyond these three facts, we assert nothing.
On advertising, ASCI’s published annual complaints report for 2024–25 names no complaint against MAC, Estée Lauder or ELCA, while flagging personal care as a top violative category without naming advertisers.
On counterfeiting, the decided record sits abroad. In January 2015 a US federal court in Arizona awarded Estée Lauder $1,862,604 — about $1.86 million — in trademark damages, plus a permanent injunction, against an online seller of fake MAC, finding the defendants “turned a blind eye to the counterfeit nature of the products”. In India, fake-cosmetics enforcement is real — a ₹1.20 crore Bareilly seizure on 11 April 2025, for one — but the reports we read name other brands, not MAC. The listicle line that MAC is “India’s most-faked makeup brand” has no dated seizure behind it that we could find, so it does not appear here as fact.
Buying it in India
The channel story is the freshest part of this audit. Before 15 December 2025, Shoppers Stop Limited sold MAC through maccosmetics.in as an authorised seller; the site now states it “has permanently discontinued accepting orders” and points shoppers to stores at Select Citywalk in Delhi, Mall of Asia in Bangalore and Palladium in Mumbai. Whether those three are the whole estate, the site does not say. Who now holds MAC’s official online distribution is not on the record — the 2016 Nykaa exclusivity is plainly over, since Tira and Sephora India both list the brand today.
- July 2005Estée Lauder enters India with a MAC store in Mumbai
- 22 December 2016MAC goes online, exclusively on Nykaa
- 15 December 2025maccosmetics.in permanently stops taking orders
- 2 September 2026Tira lists 910 MAC items; Sephora India lists 164
Who now holds MAC’s official online distribution in India is not on the record.
A brand webstore going dark pushes buyers towards marketplaces, and that is exactly where the price arithmetic turns dangerous. On the day we checked, a wholesale listing on IndiaMART offered “MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation” at ₹280 a piece — a twelfth of the genuine ₹3,400 MRP. We make no claim about that seller’s goods; the arithmetic makes its own point.
Treat a deep discount as a warning
Genuine Studio Fix Fluid carries a ₹3,400 MRP. Anything near ₹280 is not a bargain, whatever the seller says.
Read the box, not the listing
The importer’s name, the import registration and the country of origin are mandatory on the pack. Make the shop show you.
Ignore anyone selling “via maccosmetics.in”
The official webstore permanently stopped taking orders on 15 December 2025. A link to it is a dead end, not a source of stock.
Do the per-ml maths before picking a size
The 30 ml Fix+ costs about ₹53 per ml against the 100 ml bottle’s ₹23. If you use it daily, the big bottle wins by a distance.
Stick to shelves you can trace
Tira, Sephora India and the brand’s own stores in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai were the verifiable authorised options on 2 September 2026.
Common questions
Is MAC an American brand?
No. MAC was founded in Toronto, Canada, in 1984 by Canadians Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo. The owner is American — The Estée Lauder Companies of New York, full owner since 1998.
Is MAC cruelty-free?
MAC itself makes no cruelty-free claim we could find, and PETA’s directory currently lists it as a company that does test on animals. Owner Estée Lauder says it does not test except where regulators require it.
Can I still order from maccosmetics.in?
No. The site states it has permanently discontinued accepting orders as of 15 December 2025, and now points buyers to three physical stores. Shoppers Stop Limited, which sold through it until then, remains responsible for earlier orders.
Is MAC cheaper abroad than in India?
Not on the products we checked on 2 September 2026. Indian MRPs ran from 9% below to 16% above US list, and about 20% below UK prices on two of three items. Pre-tax, India was the cheapest of the three markets on all three.
Where are MAC products sold in India made?
We could not establish it — none of the five listings we read carried a country of origin, and this audit prints no “made in” line it cannot source. The declaration is mandatory on the pack, so read the box.

The surprise of this audit is the price. On the three hero products checked, MAC in India sits between 9% below and 16% above the US, about 20% under the UK, and cheapest of the three markets before tax — with Ruby Woo actually selling at ₹1,912, a fifth below US list. If you want MAC, India is a fair place to buy it.
Scepticism belongs elsewhere. The 24-hour and 12-hour wear numbers come with no published test we could find. PETA’s directory lists MAC as a brand that does test on animals, while the owner says it does not test except where authorities require it — read both sentences, not the marketing. And with the brand’s own webstore gone since 15 December 2025 and no listing showing an origin declaration, verifying what is in the box now falls to you.
Pay the ₹2,550, skip the ₹280 miracle, and make the shop show you the box.
