Ralph Lauren is an American clothing company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, known for its polo shirts. In India it sells through four stores, a cross-border website and a marketplace shelf whose median listed price on 15 September 2026 was ₹20,000.
It is also the rare imported brand whose Indian price is demonstrably higher than its American one — the same style code, on the company’s own two sites, the same afternoon.
Three Ralph Lauren style codes were read on the brand’s Indian and American sites on 15 September 2026. Two list at ₹17,400 here against $118 there; the third at ₹31,500 against $198. At the reference rate that is 54% and 66% dearer in India. The brand charged 93.2% of MRP across 100 Indian listings, only 24 of them reduced.

What Ralph Lauren costs in India
The brand’s Indian and American storefronts carry the same style code in the address, so a like-for-like comparison is possible. Three codes were read on both sites on 15 September 2026.
| Style code | Indian list price | US list price |
|---|---|---|
| 401481 — mesh polo shirt | ₹17,400 | $118.00 |
| 100007278 — slim fit stretch mesh polo | ₹17,400 | $118.00 |
| 100097159 — striped jersey rugby shirt | ₹31,500 | $198.00 |
The conversion, and what it is
The rate used here is ₹95.7245 to the US dollar, as at 1.00 p.m. on 11 September 2026, computed by FBIL and displayed by the Reserve Bank of India. There is no rate for 15 September, because 14 September was a market holiday.
At that rate $118 is ₹11,295 and $198 is ₹18,953. Against ₹17,400 and ₹31,500, India is 54.0% and 66.2% dearer.
That is arithmetic and nothing more — not what the shirt ought to cost, only the size of the difference on one day.
- US list, style 401481
- $118.00, or ₹11,295 converted
- Indian list, same code
- ₹17,400
- Gap
- +54%
- Checked on
- 15 September 2026
One adjustment is owed. American list prices exclude sales tax; Indian ones include GST, at 18% on apparel above ₹2,500. Strip that out and the gap narrows to roughly 31% and 41% — still dearer, still arithmetic.
The opposite answer, on the same shelf
Levi’s was read the same day, the same way. A 501 Original women’s jean, code 12501-0687, lists at $110.00 in the United States and ₹4,999 here; a Type III Sherpa Trucker jacket, codes 16365-0346 and 16365-0291, at $130.00 there and ₹7,999 here. India is the cheaper side on all three.
Same shelf, same day, same arithmetic: Levi’s is cheaper in India and Ralph Lauren is half again dearer.
They differ in one respect you can check. Levi’s declared India as the country of origin on 37 of 40 listings; Ralph Lauren on one of 40. So these goods are imported, and duty is a live question.
Does duty explain it?
Not on its own. Basic customs duty on apparel is 20%, doubled from 10% in July 2018 — a rate taken from a published summary of the customs notification. It is charged on the landed transfer value, not the shelf price, so 20% of a wholesale cost adds far less than that to the tag. No source found attributes the premium to duty.
The price does not move
Across 100 listings read on 15 September 2026, Ralph Lauren charged 93.2% of MRP and only 24 carried any reduction — the firmest pricing of any apparel name read that day, just ahead of Lacoste at 92.3% and a world away from Diesel’s 48.4%. Forty-seven distinct MRPs sat across six discount rungs.
The company does publish a pricing statement, and it is about going up. Its results release for the year to 28 March 2026 records that it “increased AUR by mid-teens for both the fourth quarter and full year, driven by … increased full-price selling and a reduction in discount rates.” AUR is its own shorthand for average unit retail.
That is a global statement of strategy. No statement about pricing or discounting in India was found — not in the annual filing, the results release, the Indian website or the trade press. Those documents do carry global pricing language, so the silence is India-specific.
Who actually sells you Ralph Lauren in India
There is no Indian retail company for this brand. Three Indian registrations exist, and none of them sells anything.
- 6 May 2011Liaison office registered, F04137
- 26 June 2013RL Sourcing India Private Limited incorporated
- 27 August 2019Sourcing LLP incorporated, AAQ-3747, in a Bangalore special economic zone
A liaison office cannot trade. A sourcing arm buys; it does not sell.
The live one is “RL Sourcing India LLP” in the parent’s list of subsidiaries and Ralph Lauren Sourcing India LLP on the Indian register. Both names are in use, and this page picks neither.
Trade press from October 2016 reports the brand closing its India liaison office and handing sourcing to New Times Group, when it was buying about $200 million of product a year from India.
The partner is Aditya Birla, and the shape is not published
Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited names Ralph Lauren among its brands on its own homepage and places it in its international business. Its annual report to 31 March 2026 carries a Ralph Lauren entry in its mono-brand portfolio.
What that report does not say is what the arrangement is. It uses no word for it — not licence, not franchise, not joint venture. Trade press from February 2019 calls it a “partnership” and goes no further. So this page leaves the form unpublished, where the sources leave it.
Nothing published connects Reliance to this brand, though the assumption is common. Reliance Brands’ arrangements for other labels are reported openly, in the same titles that carry Ralph Lauren’s India stories. Those stories name Aditya Birla.
The website is a Swiss shop with a rupee price tag
India sits in the brand’s own country list and resolves to a storefront showing rupee prices labelled “MRP, incl. of all taxes”. Read the imprint and the seller is Ralph Lauren Europe Sàrl of Plan-les-Ouates, Switzerland, company number CHE-109.810.419.
- Ralph Lauren CorporationNew York, the listed parent
- Ralph Lauren Europe SàrlPlan-les-Ouates, Switzerland — the named seller
- RL Finance B.V.Amsterdam — payment services
- A parcel cleared through Indian customsDuties prepayable at checkout
No Indian company is named in the imprint or the terms. Your contract is with Switzerland.
The storefront shows prices in rupees, while the terms of sale reached from the same footer refer to prices in euros. Both were read on 15 September 2026; a buyer may want to check the currency and total at checkout.
Who is answerable for the garment
Every product sold in India carries a Legal Metrology declaration: MRP inclusive of taxes, country of origin, and the manufacturer, packer or importer. It names who answers for the goods. Forty records were read in full on 15 September 2026.
The manufacturer line reads better than almost anything on that shelf. On 35 of the 40 it names “RL Fashions of Europe”, with a Milan address — a company that appears in Ralph Lauren Corporation’s own list of subsidiaries as RL Fashions of Europe S.r.l., jurisdiction Italy. Not one of the forty was blank.
Set that against two names read the same day. Diesel declares an Italian street address with no company name on it, Hugo Boss a German one on 38 of 40. Ralph Lauren names a company, and the company belongs to the brand.
The seller of record is another matter. On 39 of 40 records it is Westbury Holdings Private Limited, a Bangalore company on the register since 27 March 2007 — a third party, not an Indian arm of the brand, since no Indian arm exists.
Origins split Cambodia 10, Italy 9, China 5 and Turkey 5, with seven other countries and a single India behind. Net quantity was declared on 36 of the 40, and origin varies style by style, so read the box rather than the brand.
India in the annual filing: once
The parent’s filing for the year to 28 March 2026 mentions India exactly once, as a sourcing line: about 21% of products from Vietnam, 16% from Cambodia and 11% from India. India is not named as a market, a segment or a licensing territory.
The same document counts 177 Ralph Lauren stores in Asia and 135 run by international licensing partners, without saying which bucket any Indian store sits in, and carries no India revenue, profit or store count.
In its annual filing, then, India appears as a sourcing country rather than as a reported market.
Where you can actually buy it here
The brand’s own store directory listed four Indian addresses on 15 September 2026: Polo Ralph Lauren Chanakyapuri at DLF and Polo Ralph Lauren Emporio at DLF in New Delhi, Ralph Lauren Home at Seetu Kohli Home in Mehrauli, and Ralph Lauren Ambience in Gurgaon. It does not say who runs any of them.
A Mumbai store at Phoenix Palladium was reported in May 2023 but is not on the brand’s own locator on 15 September 2026. That is a reading of the locator, not a closure — ring ahead before travelling.
What the shirt claims, and what stands behind it
The Indian product page for the mesh polo, style 401481 at ₹17,400, describes the garment as made from “our highly breathable cotton mesh” and calls the polo shirt “an American style standard since 1972”. It publishes no percentage fibre composition and no country of origin.
The American page for the rugby shirt, style 100097159, does publish one: 100% cotton. The two sites present product details differently, so the American page is a useful place to check composition by style code.
The sustainability numbers, and what they measure
The company’s 2025 citizenship report, for the year to 29 March 2025, carries figures that read very well: 99% of cotton apparel units “met at least one of our defined sustainability attributes”, 98% of all units met “at least one of our sustainable material criteria”, and 99% of tanned leather came from Leather Working Group certified tanneries.
Those headlines rest on attributes and criteria the company defines for itself, and on meeting at least one of them — not the same as a certified share of certified fibre. Read them as the company’s own count.
Buying Ralph Lauren in India
The brand’s protection page is clear about channels and silent about garments. The only way to be sure of a new and authentic product, it says, is to buy from authorised retailers — its own stores, its own site, and “select third-party retailers” it never names.
It also says that Ralph Lauren does not authenticate products obtained from third parties. The page does not describe a code, hologram or serial check a buyer can run against a shirt, so the practical safeguard is buying from the brand’s own stores or site and keeping the receipt.
Compare the code, not the shirt
Both of the brand’s sites carry the style code in the address. Look it up on the American site before you pay and you will know that week’s premium exactly.
Turn the box over
The declaration should name a company, not only a street. Here it named RL Fashions of Europe, Milan, on 35 of 40 — the brand’s own Italian arm.
Read the seller line before the price
On 39 of 40 records the seller of record was a third party, not the brand. Whoever is named there is your first call if something goes wrong.
Treat a deep cut as a question
Only 24 of 100 listings carried any reduction and the shelf charged 93.2% of MRP. A polo at a third of its MRP is not the pattern this brand shows.
Reputation, and two decided cases
Ralph Lauren litigates its marks in India through The Polo/Lauren Company L.P., and two matters have been decided.
On 19 December 2011 the Delhi High Court decreed a suit in its favour with costs, confirming a permanent injunction first ordered on 20 December 2005 and awarding damages of ₹5 lakh. The defendants other than two who had settled did not defend, so it proceeded ex parte — decided without the other side appearing.
On 9 April 2026 a commercial court in Saket, New Delhi, decreed a second suit in part. It granted a permanent injunction restraining the defendant from using the disputed mark and refused the rest: no asset freeze, no delivery up, no account of profits, no ₹25 lakh in damages. That matter was also ex parte.
Two undefended decrees are weaker authority than contested ones, and both are disputes between the brand and individual traders. That is not a finding against anyone selling the brand in India today. No appeal has been reported in either, and nobody has ruled on anything beyond the above.
Who Ralph Lauren is actually for
It suits a buyer who wants a particular kind of American dress and is buying the garment rather than a bargain. The shelf is priced per garment and held there, and the declaration names a company inside the brand’s own group.
It suits you much less if you travel, since the same style code costs about half again more here than in America. And less again if you want the brand to stand behind the item rather than the shop: no authentication method is published, the seller of record is a third party, and there is no Indian company of the brand’s own to escalate to.
Common questions
Why is Ralph Lauren so expensive in India?
On three style codes read on the brand’s own Indian and American sites on 15 September 2026, India was 54% and 66% dearer at the reference rate. Duty on apparel is 20% and is charged on landed value rather than the shelf price, so it does not account for a gap that size. The company has published no explanation.
Who owns Ralph Lauren?
Ralph Lauren Corporation, a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker RL. It reported revenue of $8,114.5 million and net income of $941.1 million for the year to 28 March 2026. It has no parent group.
Does Ralph Lauren have a company in India?
Not for retail. Its Indian registrations are sourcing or liaison entities — a liaison office from 2011, a sourcing company from 2013 and a sourcing LLP from 2019. The Indian partner named in published sources is Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited, though the form of that arrangement is not published.
Is Ralph Lauren made in India?
Barely any of what is sold here. Of 40 Indian listings read on 15 September 2026, one declared India as the country of origin, against Cambodia 10, Italy 9, China 5 and Turkey 5. India is a large sourcing country for the group — 11% of products — but most of that output is sold elsewhere.
Does Ralph Lauren discount in India?
Rarely. Only 24 of 100 listings read on 15 September 2026 carried any reduction, and the shelf charged 93.2% of MRP across six discount rungs. That is the firmest pricing of any apparel brand read that day.
Can Ralph Lauren tell me if my polo is genuine?
No. The company states that it does not authenticate products obtained from third parties, and no authentication method is published — no code, serial or check you can run against the garment. Its guarantee attaches to where you bought it.

The declaration is the good news. On 35 of 40 listings the manufacturer line names RL Fashions of Europe, Milan — a company inside Ralph Lauren’s own group — where two of its price neighbours name only a street.
The price is the rest of it. Two mesh polos at ₹17,400 against $118, and a rugby shirt at ₹31,500 against $198, make India 54% and 66% dearer at the reference rate — 31% and 41% even after stripping out GST. Levi’s, read the same day by the same method, was cheaper here. And with 93.2% of MRP charged, that premium will not come down in a sale. There is also no Indian retail company of the brand’s own, and a third-party seller of record appeared on 39 of 40 listings, so buy from a channel you can go back to.
Buy it abroad if you can — in India you are paying half as much again for the same style code, and the shelf will not put it on sale.
