A Rolex is the most written-about watch in the world and one of the least documented. The company has no shareholders, files no accounts and publishes no production figures. What it does publish is a rupee price for every current model. Set those against Rolex’s own Swiss and American lists and they say something almost no Indian article says: on this brand, India is the cheap market.
On Rolex’s own prices, checked 27 August 2026, a Submariner Date is ₹10,51,000 here against CHF 10,150 in Switzerland. Strip 18% GST from one side and 8.1% Swiss VAT from the other and India sits 20% below. The same gap holds on the ₹6,22,800 Oyster Perpetual and the ₹15,61,500 Daytona. Import duty is not what makes a Rolex costly here.

How it started
Rolex publishes the founding date itself: 1905, in London, when Hans Wilsdorf was 24. The record adds the part its own page leaves out. The firm was an equal partnership, Wilsdorf & Davis, formed on 22 June 1905 at 83 Hatton Garden with his brother-in-law Alfred James Davis.
The name became a Swiss trademark in 1908, and Montres Rolex S.A. was constituted in Geneva on 16 January 1920. Rolex is an English company that became Swiss — the reverse of what most Indian listicles say.

Rolex has not been sold, listed or part-sold in eighty years — the longest unbroken ownership in the luxury watch trade.
The Foundation is not a charity that happens to own a watch company. Its registered purpose runs two jobs together: keep the Rolex group under its control and profitable, and fund social and cultural work in Geneva, where its secretary general put annual giving at CHF 250 million in November 2019.
That structure explains the silence. A foundation has no shareholders and no listing, so no duty to publish accounts. Every figure you will read — including the CHF 11.0 billion in sales and roughly 1.1 million watches Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult estimated for 2025 — is a bank’s estimate, not a disclosure. The claim that Rolex “pays no tax because a charity owns it” is false: the Foundation gave up its exemption from 2020, expecting to pay over CHF 30 million a year, and Rolex SA pays tax like any Swiss company.
What they actually make
Rolex makes mechanical watches and nothing else. Every model runs a Rolex-made calibre — 3230 in the Oyster Perpetual 36, 3235 in the Submariner Date, 4131 in the Daytona — with no bought-in ETA or Sellita movement anywhere. One genuinely new movement architecture, ninety-nine years after the Oyster.
The certification point is the one most articles fumble. COSC certifies the movement to −4/+6 seconds a day. Rolex then tests the assembled, cased watch to its own standard of about −2/+2 seconds a day, covering precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. Two tests, two different objects, two stages.
What Rolex costs in India
Rolex publishes a rupee price for every current model on its Indian site, so you need not ask a dealer. Nothing is discounted anywhere, so list price is what you pay.

A fair comparison needs tax out of both sides: Indian shelf prices carry 18% GST, Swiss ones 8.1% VAT. At the mid-market rate of 27 August 2026, the Submariner looks like this.

The Oyster Perpetual comes out 19.8% below Switzerland, the Daytona 19.6%, and all three land about 18% under the United States. A gap that steady across three watches an order of magnitude apart is a pricing decision taken in Geneva, not rounding.
Why does everyone say duty makes Swiss watches dear here? Because they read the duty rate as if it applied to the shelf price. It does not. Duty is charged on the landed transfer value — what the Indian subsidiary pays for the watch — and on a luxury watch that is a fraction of retail. A headline rate adds a few points at the counter, not its full number.
The rate is falling anyway. The India–EFTA agreement came into force on 1 October 2025 and put Swiss watches on a seven-year glide path: 18.9% at the start, 15.71% from 1 January 2026, zero from 1 January 2031. GST stayed at 18%, and a proposal to move watches above ₹25,000 into a 28% slab was never implemented. Ethos chairman Yashovardhan Saboo said in March 2026 that Indian prices are already globally aligned. They are better than aligned.
Who Rolex is actually for
Start with the floor. The cheapest current Rolex in India is ₹6,22,800. Titan’s Swiss-made Xylys line, the top of the Indian mainstream, runs ₹16,450 to ₹66,600 — about a tenth of where Rolex begins. The second thing to understand is allocation. Rolex has commented on record about scarcity once, in a September 2021 statement, and the operative sentence is the last one.
Rolex watches are available exclusively from official retailers, who independently manage the allocation of watches to customers.
Rolex allocates stock to retailers; the retailer decides who gets the watch. There is no central queue, no position number and nothing to appeal. Any article describing “the Rolex waiting list” as one brand-run system is describing something Rolex says does not exist.
Scarcity has eased, too. In January 2025 only 56% of Rolex models traded above authorised-dealer retail on the secondary market, down from 68% a year earlier. Volumes then fell about 2% in 2025, a second consecutive decline on Morgan Stanley’s estimates.
Reputation and controversies
The largest decided matter against Rolex is French. On 19 December 2023 the Autorité de la concurrence fined Rolex France SAS €91,600,000, jointly with Rolex Holding SA, Rolex SA and the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, for barring its retailers from selling online for more than a decade. The regulator called the ban inherently restrictive of competition and rejected Rolex’s counterfeiting defence as disproportionate. It is also the clearest official confirmation that the Foundation sits atop a commercial group.
The other big change is structural. Rolex agreed on 24 August 2023 to buy Bucherer, its largest retail partner, with more than 100 outlets across Switzerland, the United States and Europe. The European Commission cleared the deal on 10 July 2024 and the Swiss authority approved it without conditions the next day. A manufacturer that had only ever sold through independents now owns the world’s largest multi-brand watch retailer.
None of that changed anything here, because Bucherer trades only in Europe and the United States. Carl F. Bucherer, the watch brand with Indian stockists that Rolex was reported in February 2025 to be winding down, is a different entity.
Two Indian judgments matter, though both went against the customs department rather than Rolex. On 19 February 2025 the Delhi High Court ordered a seized Rolex released, holding that an oral waiver of show cause notice had no legal validity. On 18 December 2025 the same court ordered another released as a personal effect under the Baggage Rules.
Buying it in India
Rolex owns no shop here. Its Indian subsidiary, at TCG Financial Centre in Bandra Kurla Complex, runs the Rolex India Mumbai service centre. Retail belongs entirely to independent authorised dealers — Ethos, Khimji Ramdas at Mumbai’s Jio World Centre, Cooke & Kelvey in New Delhi, Exclusive Lines in Kolkata. Roughly two dozen points of sale operate across about a dozen cities, and the current list is the store locator on rolex.com.
Now the part that matters most, because Rolex attracts more invented authentication tricks than any brand alive. Rolex publishes no consumer guide to spotting a fake. None. There is no Rolex page on serial-number formats, cyclops magnification, rehaut engraving or second-hand sweep. Rolex publishes one instruction — buy from an Official Rolex Retailer — and one statement: “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” The rest was invented elsewhere.
Use Rolex’s own locator
New Rolex watches are sold only by Official Rolex Retailers, who warrant authenticity. Check the shop on rolex.com first, and take a watch you already doubt to a Rolex service point, not a jeweller.
Watch the card being filled in
The five-year guarantee holds only if the retailer completed and dated the card at purchase and you present it with the watch. A blank card is printed plastic.
Treat ₹6,22,800 as the floor
That is Rolex’s published Indian price for its cheapest model. Anything materially below the published rupee price for a reference is either not that watch or not from the official network.
Refuse aftermarket parts
Substituting or adding components Rolex did not make voids the guarantee outright — aftermarket bezels, diamond-set dials and third-party bracelets included.
Buying abroad is fine within limits. The guarantee is international by Rolex’s own word, so a watch sold by an Official Rolex Retailer in Dubai, Singapore or London, card completed and dated, is covered here. A grey-market watch with a blank card is covered nowhere.
Customs is the harder part. The duty-free baggage allowance rose to ₹75,000 under the Baggage Rules, 2026, effective 2 February 2026 — irrelevant to a watch starting at ₹6.23 lakh. Any Rolex you carry in is a declarable, dutiable import, and both Delhi High Court cases began in a green channel and took a writ petition to resolve.
Budget for service too. Rolex recommends a full service roughly every ten years, covered afterwards by a two-year guarantee, but publishes no service price for India. The only honest figure is a written quote from an authorised service point. Ask before you buy.
Rolex Certified Pre-Owned carries a fresh two-year guarantee, but no Indian retailer is confirmed to offer it. Ask your dealer directly before paying a premium for the label here.
Common questions
Is a Rolex cheaper in India than abroad?
Yes, on Rolex’s own prices. Strip 18% GST from the Indian figure and 8.1% VAT from the Swiss one and India is about 20% lower, and about 18% below the American price, across three models on 27 August 2026.
Does import duty make Rolex expensive in India?
No. Duty is charged on the landed transfer value, not the shelf price, so it adds a few points rather than its headline rate. The preferential rate on Swiss watches is 15.71% and falls to zero by 1 January 2031.
Is there a Rolex waiting list?
Not a brand-run one. Rolex’s position is that official retailers independently manage allocation. Each dealer decides who gets which watch, so there is no central queue and no position number to check.
Will a Rolex bought in Dubai be under guarantee in India?
Yes, if it came from an Official Rolex Retailer and that retailer completed and dated the card at purchase. Present the card with the watch. A blank card means no cover anywhere, India included.
How do I spot a fake Rolex?
Rolex publishes no authentication guide and says only Rolex can confirm a Rolex. Ignore the online tests attributed to the brand. Buy from a retailer on rolex.com’s locator, insist on a completed and dated card, and treat ₹6,22,800 as the floor.

The engineering is real and the pricing here is genuinely good. Every calibre is Rolex’s own, every finished watch is tested to about −2/+2 seconds a day after casing, and at ₹10,51,000 the Submariner Date costs 20% less here than in Switzerland once tax comes off both sides. If you were buying one anyway, buy it in India, from a retailer on Rolex’s own locator.
What deserves scepticism is everything built around the watch. There is no brand-run waiting list: the queue you are in belongs to a shop, not to Geneva. The resale story has thinned, with only 56% of models trading above retail in January 2025 against 68% a year earlier. And a company with no shareholders publishes no accounts, so treat every revenue figure about Rolex, this page included, as an estimate.
A Rolex is a well-made mechanical watch sold at a brand price, and India is currently the cheapest place on earth to pay it.
