A Seiko Prospex diver costs ₹1,25,000 in India and $1,300 in the United States. Strip the tax off both and India is 15% cheaper. Move to a Presage Cocktail Time and India is 8% dearer. Same brand, same week, same official shops. Seiko does not price India to a formula the way the Swiss houses do.
Seiko sells in India through its own subsidiary at ₹35,000 to ₹4,00,000, with Grand Seiko a separate boutique at ₹2,60,000 to ₹40,00,000. Across ten references India runs from 16.4% below the US to 8.2% above it. Japan is cheaper than both. Prices checked 30 August 2026.

How it started
Kintaro Hattori was 21 when he opened K. Hattori & Co. in Tokyo in 1881 to sell and repair imported clocks. Eleven years later he built the Seikosha factory and began making wall clocks himself. Japan’s first wristwatch, the Laurel, followed in 1913. The Seiko name arrived only in 1924, which makes 2026 the group’s 145th year.

The company is 43 years older than the brand, which is why both dates get quoted as its founding.
What they actually make
Here is what most writing about this brand gets wrong. Seiko is not one company with divisions. It is at least four businesses, two separately listed with different shareholders.

Epson’s revenue is roughly five times the Seiko group’s, and Epson is not part of that group.
That last line matters. The 1969 Quartz Astron — sold from 25 December 1969 at ¥450,000 in solid gold — was built by Suwa Seikosha, now Epson, and Spring Drive was developed there too. Epson says both on its own site, while Grand Seiko names its three watch studios and never mentions Epson.
Spring Drive is a mechanical watch — mainspring, no battery — in which the escapement is replaced by a quartz-regulated electromagnetic brake. It is not a quartz watch, and Grand Seiko’s own figures settle it: a standard 9R runs to ±15 seconds a month, its 9F quartz to ±10 seconds a year. Grand Seiko was separated in March 2017, and separated is the right word. The Seiko logo came off the dial and the Grand Seiko logo moved to 12 o’clock. Nothing changed legally. There is no Grand Seiko company; Seiko Watch Corporation still handles the brand.
What Seiko costs in India
Seiko India sells through its own e-store and 20 exclusive boutiques, targeting 30 by 2028. Seiko Watch India Private Limited is a subsidiary of the Japanese parent, not a distributor.
The prices below are Seiko’s own. Indian MRP includes 18% GST and Japanese lists include 10% consumption tax, so both are stripped before comparison, at ₹95.70 to the dollar and ₹0.6022 to the yen.

Across all ten references India averages 7.4% below the US, but the spread runs 24.6 points end to end. The Swiss houses hold India within a point of their home shelf price on every reference. Seiko does not. Its Indian prices are round numbers, set model by model. Global price parity is a Swiss policy, not an industry one.
Nor is there a rule inside the deviation. The cheap Presage is dearer here and the costly Grand Seikos cheaper, until you reach the ₹85,000 ladies’ Prospex, 14% below the US.
The second finding is bigger. Japan is the cheapest place on earth to buy a Seiko. The US pays 20% to 42% over Japanese list; India pays 17.5% on average. India’s premium over Japan is roughly what a duty-paid import should cost, since the non-creditable part of the duty stack works out near 10% of the shelf price. The odd number is that India sits below the US, which pays no import duty at all.
The 20% to 42% gap between Japan and America is not clever arbitrage by grey dealers. It is Seiko’s own list price in Seiko’s own two shops.
Seiko publishes no Indian service price and no recommended interval. For a brand whose argument below ₹1 lakh is value for money, an unbudgetable running cost is a real gap. Nor does its own store discount: MRP and selling price are identical on every page. Authorised retailers may go below MRP, so ask before paying the sticker.
Who Seiko is actually for
Seiko’s Indian range starts at ₹35,000, above the entire Fastrack catalogue of ₹1,299 to ₹7,995. These sit on opposite sides of a 20% tariff wall. If that is your budget, our everyday and college watch guide is the more useful page.
Where Seiko is unmatched is mechanical watches between ₹35,000 and ₹1,25,000. A ₹55,000 Presage Cocktail Time or a ₹1,25,000 Prospex diver has no real Swiss competitor at that price here.
Above ₹2,60,000 you are in Grand Seiko territory, at 10% to 16% below Grand Seiko’s own US price. The cheapest, SBGX265, is a 9F quartz and more accurate than any mechanical at any price, so treating quartz as the cheap option gets this brand wrong. Our wider watch coverage compares across brands.
Reputation and controversies
Seiko India issued a dated public notice on 6 October 2025 warning about counterfeits, scam websites and modified watches, which it says are sometimes indistinguishable from genuine products. It names auction sites, marketplaces and social media.
It also extended the worldwide Seiko warranty to three years, announced 18 September 2024 and effective that October, covering the watch head and metal bracelet.
Two things are less flattering. Eleven authorised service centres across nine cities is thin for what Seiko calls its fourth-largest market, with nothing in Hyderabad or Chennai. And executives told the press in 2026 that the Indian business grew 162% year on year, while the filed FY2025 accounts show 54.55%. The gap is unexplained.
Buying it in India
The warranty question has a written answer, and it is the most useful thing on this page. Seiko’s Japanese after-sales provisions state that Seiko, Grand Seiko and Credor watches are covered overseas by means of the warranty card. Alba, Wired and the licensed brands are covered only within Japan. What voids cover is not the country but the card: no retailer’s stamp and purchase date, no warranty.
Seiko’s Japanese text is explicit about overseas cover, but no Indian page confirms how the appointed centres here apply it. Ring the centre you would actually use before you buy abroad, not after.
Buy from a channel Seiko names
Seiko publishes no serial check, case-back marking or verification portal, so the channel is the check: its own store, a boutique, or a named authorised retailer.
Make them stamp the card
The retailer’s stamp and purchase date carry the warranty. A seller who cannot stamp one is telling you something.
Know the price floor
Seiko’s own store does not discount. A ₹1,25,000 SPB453J1 offered at ₹60,000 by an unknown seller is not a bargain — nobody legitimate halves the price.
A mod is not a Seiko
A modified watch has a genuine movement with an aftermarket dial and hands. It is not a counterfeit, but it is not a Seiko for warranty or service either.
Bringing one back from Japan is worth the arithmetic. The duty-free baggage allowance is ₹75,000, so a Seiko 5 at ₹35,000 sits inside it. Above that you declare, and the rate on the excess is currently disputed. Below roughly ₹1.5 lakh the case works either way: the SPB453J1 saves 16% to 21% of Indian MRP at either rate. Above ₹2.5 lakh it collapses — on a Grand Seiko SBGM257 the saving is 18% at the lower rate and 1% at the higher.
Common questions
Is Seiko owned by Epson?
No, and neither owns the other. Seiko Epson is a separately listed company absent from Seiko Group Corporation’s list of affiliates, with roughly five times its revenue. Epson did build the Astron and develop Spring Drive.
Will a Seiko bought in Japan be covered under warranty in India?
Seiko’s Japanese after-sales provisions say Seiko, Grand Seiko and Credor watches are covered overseas, provided the card carries the retailer’s stamp and purchase date. Alba and Wired are Japan-only. Confirm with the Indian centre you would use.
Is Spring Drive a quartz watch?
No. It runs on a mainspring with no battery, using a quartz oscillator only to regulate an electromagnetic brake. A standard 9R is accurate to ±15 seconds a month, against ±10 a year for the 9F quartz.
Is Grand Seiko a separate company?
No. It was separated as a brand in March 2017, when the Seiko logo came off the dial. Seiko Watch Corporation still handles it, and in India it sells through its own boutique.

Between ₹35,000 and ₹1,25,000 Seiko does something nobody else does here: it sells in-house mechanical watches at prices where the Swiss are absent. A ₹55,000 Presage or a ₹1,25,000 Prospex is a genuinely good buy, and on six of our ten references you pay less than an American does.
What deserves scepticism is the pricing and the support behind it. A 24.6-point spread means the tag reflects a decision, not a formula, and on the Presage Cocktail Time that decision costs 8.2% more than a US buyer pays. Eleven service centres is thin for a market Seiko calls its fourth largest, and no Indian service price is published.
Buy the mechanical Seikos below ₹1.5 lakh with confidence; above ₹2.5 lakh, price your model against Japan and the US first, because Seiko clearly did.
