Sonata Brand Audit: Why No Import Beats the 695 Rupee Watch

What Sonata watches cost in India, why no imported brand can match them under ₹1,500, who owns the brand and where it stops being worth buying.

Sonata is Titan’s budget watch brand — Indian, owned by Titan Company — a Tata–TIDCO joint venture in which TIDCO is the largest single shareholder — and built almost entirely around the ₹695 to ₹2,500 band. It is the watch most Indians actually buy: plain quartz analog and digital pieces sold through small-town shops as much as through malls. The important thing to understand about Sonata is that it was created to occupy a gap left by a departing foreign partner, and it has defended that gap ever since.

The short answer

No imported watch can reach ₹695 in India. Duty, cess, surcharge and IGST add roughly 49% to an import before anyone takes a retail margin. Sonata is made in India by Titan, pays none of that, and sells most of its range under ₹1,500.

Where Sonata came from
  1. Titan–Timex joint ventureFrom 1992; Timex became second only to Titan in India
  2. DissolutionThe partnership ended in 1998
  3. Budget share left openAnd open to the partner Titan had just separated from
  4. SonataLaunched 1998 to reclaim that share

Sonata was built to hold a gap in the market rather than to create one.

How it started

Sonata exists because a partnership broke down. From 1992 Titan ran a joint venture with Timex, the American watch brand. By Titan’s own account the venture worked: helped by the JV, Timex was second only to Titan in popularity in India.

The partnership was dissolved in 1998. That left Titan with a problem and an opportunity at the same time — a large, price-sensitive part of the market it had been serving through a partner brand was suddenly open, and about to be served by a competitor it had just separated from. Titan’s response was to launch Sonata and, in the company’s own words, reclaim the share.

That origin explains the brand’s character better than any marketing line. Sonata was never designed to be aspirational. It was designed to be bought — cheap enough for a first job, distributed widely enough to reach towns where Titan showrooms do not exist, and reliable enough not to embarrass the parent brand.

What they actually make

Quartz watches, almost entirely. The main Sonata line covers plain analog dress watches on leather or metal. SF is the sportier arm — digital displays, polyurethane straps, chunkier cases. Poze is the fashion-led line aimed at women, and it is where Titan has been putting new design work; the company said it expanded the Poze portfolio again in the quarter to June 2026.

There are no mechanical movements, no in-house complications and no attempt at watchmaking as a craft. Cases are steel, brass or plastic, glass is mineral rather than sapphire, and straps are leather, polyurethane or steel bracelet. That is the correct specification for the price, and it is worth being clear about it rather than dressing it up.

On manufacturing, Titan does not publish plant-level detail for Sonata specifically. At company level it reports 11 manufacturing and assembly facilities, with watch assembly at Hosur in Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore, Pantnagar in Uttarakhand and Rangpo in Sikkim. Sonata benefits from the same domestic manufacturing base as Titan, which is the whole reason its pricing is possible.

Sonata describes itself as “India’s largest selling watch brand” and claims more than 8,000 authorised sellers. Treat the first as a company claim rather than an audited figure — Titan does not publish brand-level unit volumes in its quarterly reporting, so there is no public number to check it against.

What Sonata costs in India

Sonata is not sold at scale outside India, so there is no global price to compare against. The more useful comparison is what an imported watch would have to cost to sit on the same shelf — and that is where the numbers become interesting.

What an imported watch pays at the border
  • Basic customs duty20% of assessable value
  • AIDC cess20% of that duty
  • Social welfare surcharge20% of the two combined
  • IGST18% on the whole landed value

Roughly 49% of assessable value, before the importer, distributor and retailer take anything.

Apply that to a watch that needs to retail at ₹795 and the arithmetic collapses. Sonata’s competition at this price is not Casio or Timex; it is unbranded quartz and the second-hand market.

Two things stand out. Sonata’s discounting is far milder than Fastrack’s — where Fastrack routinely sells at 60% or more below MRP, Sonata’s discounted lines sit around 30% off, and much of the range is simply listed at one price. That is a healthier pricing structure and a small point in the brand’s favour. Titan’s own Sonata page advertises a starting price of ₹549, below anything visible in the current catalogue, so treat that as a promotional floor rather than a shelf price.

There is no imported watch at ₹795 in India, and there cannot be one.

Who Sonata is actually for

Sonata is for the buyer who needs a watch rather than wants one. A first watch for a school student, a spare for a parent, a gift where the budget is genuinely ₹1,000, a watch for work where an expensive one would be a liability — this is the brand for all of those, and nothing else at the price is as safe a purchase, because the service network behind it is Titan’s.

The Poze line has a narrower but real audience: women who want a slim, current-looking dress watch at under ₹1,500 and are not pretending it is jewellery.

Skip Sonata if you care how a watch is made. There is nothing here for anyone interested in movements, materials or longevity, and the resale value is zero. If your budget stretches to ₹4,000 or more, Titan’s own range is a better watch in every respect that matters, and above ₹8,000 the imported brands finally become worth their duty. Buying a Sonata as a “starter watch collection” piece is a category error — it is a tool, not a collectible.

Reputation and controversies

Sonata has no major documented controversies as of August 2026. No labour dispute, regulatory action, product recall, advertising adjudication or pattern of consumer commission orders against the brand could be sourced.

That is a genuine finding rather than a gap in research, and it is worth saying plainly: a brand selling watches at ₹700 across tens of thousands of outlets has a large surface area for complaints, and none of it has produced a documented pattern. Online criticism of Sonata exists and is mostly about durability at the very bottom of the range, but it sits in forums and reviews rather than in any adjudicated finding, so it does not belong on this page as fact.

The one structural risk is inherited. Sonata’s parent, Titan Company, has had its own controversies — most prominently the withdrawal of a Tanishq advertisement in October 2020 after an online boycott campaign, and a 2022 SEBI penalty on eight designated employees over undisclosed share transactions. Neither involved Sonata or the watch business.

Buying it in India

Sonata is the easiest Titan brand to buy safely, for a straightforward commercial reason: there is no margin in faking a ₹795 watch.

Check 01

Buy from an authorised seller

sonatawatches.in, titan.co.in, Titan World, Helios or any authorised multi-brand watch retailer. Sonata’s distribution is the widest of the Titan watch brands, and the company claims more than 8,000 authorised sellers.

Check 02

Read the seller name on marketplaces

Amazon, Flipkart, Tata CLiQ, Myntra and Ajio carry authorised stock. On a marketplace you are buying from a seller rather than the platform.

Check 03

Watch for lookalike names

Where fakes do appear they tend to be unbranded quartz sold under a Sonata-like name in unorganised shops, rather than convincing copies.

Check 04

Run the usual three checks

A clean model number on the case back, an intact warranty card, and printed packaging.

Check 05

Do not bother buying it abroad

Sonata is an India-first brand, the price is lowest here, and the warranty is only practically claimable here.

Common questions

Is Sonata a good watch brand?

For its price, yes. Sonata sells working quartz watches from ₹695 with Titan’s service network behind them. Expect mineral glass, brass or plastic cases and no mechanical movements. It is a reliable everyday watch, not a durable or collectible one.

Is Sonata owned by Titan?

Yes. Sonata is a brand of Titan Company Limited, the Tata group company that also owns Titan, Fastrack, Xylys and Tanishq. Titan launched Sonata in 1998, after its joint venture with Timex was dissolved, to reclaim the budget share that venture had held.

What is the difference between Sonata and Fastrack?

Both belong to Titan. Sonata is cheaper, plainer and aimed at buyers who need a functional watch, typically ₹695 to ₹2,500. Fastrack is styling-led, aimed at 15 to 25 year olds, and sells at higher prices with far steeper permanent discounts off its MRP.

Why are Sonata watches so cheap?

Because they are made in India by Titan. An imported watch carries roughly 49% in customs duty, cess, surcharge and IGST before any retail margin, which makes a ₹795 imported watch impossible. Sonata pays none of that, and shares Titan’s manufacturing scale.

Do Sonata watches last?

At the bottom of the range, expect two to four years of ordinary use before the strap, glass or movement gives trouble. That is normal for the price. Titan’s service network makes battery and strap replacement easy, which extends useful life more than the specification suggests.
