How it started
Bata India Limited was incorporated in 1931 as Bata Shoe Company Private Limited, and began as a small operation at Konnagar near Calcutta in 1932. The company went public in 1973 and took its present name.
Then it built a town. The manufacturing township that grew around the factory became known as Batanagar — named for the Bata family, not the other way round. It was also the first manufacturing facility in the Indian shoe industry to receive ISO 9001 certification.
That township is the whole reason for the confusion. A company with a factory town in West Bengal, a Bengali workforce and school shoes on every child in the country does not feel foreign. But the town was built by a foreign parent that predates the Indian company by roughly forty years.

Manufacturing is properly Indian. Bata India runs plants in West Bengal, Bihar, Haryana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, with capacity around 46.38 million pairs a year — which is why nothing in the range carries import duty.

There is no import duty here — Bata India manufactures in five states. That is the structural reason it can sell a leather-look formal shoe at ₹1,299 while imported brands start several times higher. It is also why the Indian buyer gets a genuinely better deal from Bata than a European buyer gets from the same organisation.
Who Bata is actually for
School shoes, first office shoes, and anyone who wants a formal black shoe that costs about a thousand rupees and can be replaced without thinking. On that job Bata is close to unbeatable in India, and 2,000 stores means there is one near you when a sole gives way.
Comfit and Bubblegummers do their jobs well too — cushioned everyday women’s footwear and children’s shoes where outgrowing them matters more than outlasting them.
Skip it if you want leather that ages. At this price the materials are what they are, and a ₹1,299 formal shoe is a synthetic-heavy product built to a number. Skip Power if you are running seriously. And do not pay a premium for Hush Puppies or Red Label expecting a different company — the gap against other budget Indian brands is smaller than the branding suggests.
That is not deception. It is silence that pays.
Reputation and controversies
Bata India has no significant documented consumer controversy as of August 2026 — no product recall, advertising adjudication or pattern of consumer commission orders could be sourced.
The honest criticism is about perception rather than conduct, and Bata has never actively claimed to be Indian. It simply never corrected an assumption that suits it. A company whose registered office is a township named after its founding family, whose shoes were on two generations of Indian schoolchildren, has every commercial reason to let people keep believing.

Do not lose sleep over fakes
Counterfeit risk is low and barely matters here. The margins on faking a ₹1,200 shoe are thin, and the store network keeps most buyers away from grey channels.
Check the website before you pay in a shop
The real risk is buying an older line at full price in a small-town store while the same model sits at 50% off online.
Do not buy it abroad
It is made in India, priced for India, and cheaper here than the same organisation’s shoes are almost anywhere else.
