Dior Beauty Brand Audit: LVMH Owner and India Prices vs US

Dior Beauty was part of LVMH before the couture house joined. India prices sit above US list at MRP and below it before GST; what its pages and shelves show.

Most people assume Dior’s beauty business is a licence — that some other company makes the lipstick and pays for the name, the way YSL Beauty belongs to L’Oréal while the clothes belong to Kering. The record says the opposite, and it says it in Christian Dior SE’s own words.

Parfums Christian Dior was already an LVMH company when the couture house was not. LVMH bought Christian Dior Couture in April 2017, for €6.5 billion, expressly to put the two back together. The perfume was inside first.

The short answer

Dior Beauty is Parfums Christian Dior, owned by LVMH — and it was inside LVMH before the clothing house joined in 2017, not the other way round. On four hero products checked on 2 September 2026, Indian prices ran 5% to 17% above US list, but 1% to 11% below it once 18% GST is stripped out. No Indian Dior company for beauty could be found on the register, and Dior’s two Indian boutiques do not list beauty at all.

How it started

Christian Dior founded his house in Paris in 1946 and described himself as a fashion and perfume designer. Perfume was in the plan from the beginning. Miss Dior arrived in 1947, created at 30 Avenue Montaigne alongside the New Look, and LVMH’s own account credits the Maison with inventing the idea of global beauty through Rouge Dior and the cosmetic lines that followed.

The ownership question is where most writing about the brand goes wrong. Two Dior companies exist: Parfums Christian Dior, which makes the fragrance, makeup and skincare, and Christian Dior Couture, which makes the clothes and leather goods. Both sit inside LVMH today. They did not arrive together.

Which Dior joined LVMH first
  1. Parfums Christian DiorAlready owned by LVMH before the 2017 deal
  2. Christian Dior CoutureHeld by the listed holding company, Christian Dior SE
  3. 25 April 2017LVMH agrees to buy Couture for €6.5 billion
  4. One group, both housesThe stated purpose: regrouping the Couture and Parfums brands

The beauty business was never licensed out to anyone — it was the half that was already home.

That matters for a practical reason. There is no third-party licensee setting beauty prices to a different plan, and no separate company to point at when a product disappoints. One listed group answers for the lipstick and the handbag.

LVMH itself reported revenue of €80.8 billion for 2025, down 5% as reported, with net profit of €10.9 billion. Perfumes and Cosmetics — the division Dior Beauty sits in — brought in €8,174 million with an 8.9% operating margin. That is roughly a tenth of group revenue, at a lower margin than the group as a whole.

What they actually make

Fragrance first — Miss Dior, J’adore, Sauvage — then makeup and skincare. In India the readable range is retailer-assembled: Sephora India listed 214 Dior items on 2 September 2026 and Nykaa’s Luxe brand page 121, covering Rouge Dior and Dior Addict lipsticks, the Lip Glow balms and oils, Forever Skin Glow and Forever Skin Wear foundations, Backstage blushes and concealers, Diorshow mascaras, and the fragrance line.

On substantiation, Dior’s own product pages footnote each numeric claim with the test type and the panel size. Forever Skin Glow’s “24-hour wear” is footnoted to an instrumental test on 25 subjects, its “48-hour hydration” to 30 subjects, and its one-week skin-improvement claim to a clinical test on at least 31. Dior Addict Lip Glow’s 48-hour hydration claim cites 31 subjects and its eight-hour smoothness claim 20 women.

The footnotes give panels of 20 to 31 people; the pages do not name a laboratory or link a report. On Rouge Dior, the “24 hours of comfort” claim is footnoted to a self-rating by at least 31 subjects, meaning it records how users rated the product rather than an instrumental measurement.

One more piece of small print deserves translating. Dior Addict Lip Glow is sold as a “97% lip care base formula”, and Dior’s own page explains that this is the minimum percentage of the lip balm base before colour agents are added — not 97% of what is in the tube. The explanation is on the brand’s own page.

Where the Indian listings fall silent is on the pack declaration. We read three Dior product pages in full on Nykaa plus the brand listing pages on Nykaa and Sephora India. Country of origin appeared on none of the three. Importer, none. Manufacturer, none. What every page did carry was the seller — Nykaa E-Retail Limited — and the retailer’s statement that the stock is bought directly from Dior.

Worth knowing

The three Dior listings we read did not show the importer or the country of origin. Both are printed on the carton itself, so check the pack, and ask before you pay rather than after.

What Dior Beauty costs in India

We priced four heroes like-for-like on 2 September 2026 — Indian MRPs from Sephora India and Nykaa Luxe against Dior’s own American and British list prices, converted at ₹95.38 to the dollar and ₹129.29 to the pound (Federal Reserve rates for 28 August 2026).

Rouge Dior lipstick, 3.5 g₹5,100–₹5,2007–9% dearer

India prices from Sephora India and Nykaa Luxe; US prices from dior.com and, for the blush, Ulta. All read 2 September 2026.

Now strip the tax, because the comparison is not like-for-like without it. Indian MRPs include 18% GST and American shelf prices exclude sales tax entirely. On a pre-tax basis the same four products sit 8–9%, 5–7%, 1% and 11% below their US prices. Against the British list, India was at or under on every product where a UK price was readable.

This is not what an Indian buyer expects from an imported French brand, and it is worth knowing why the expectation is wrong. Tariff databases put basic customs duty on imported perfumes and lip preparations at 20%, plus a 10% social welfare surcharge on the duty and 18% IGST — roughly 44% of the value declared at the border, of which the IGST part is creditable. Duty is charged on that declared value, not on an American shelf price, so an Indian MRP is built off wholesale value plus a chosen margin. Some of the parity is currency too: at ₹95.38 to the dollar, a $50 lipstick converts to ₹4,769, and it did not a few years ago.

Per gram, the numbers are less comfortable. Rouge Dior works out to roughly ₹1,470 a gram and Lip Glow to about ₹1,390 a gram, while the 6 ml Lip Glow Oil at ₹4,500 is ₹750 a millilitre. A 100 ml bottle of Sauvage at ₹14,200 costs ₹142 a millilitre — a tenth of the lipstick’s rate, on the product everyone thinks of as the expensive one. Working out the unit price before you buy is the same discipline we apply to price gaps in our Liberty audit.

The shade range is the other side of the arithmetic. Counted on the same day, Dior’s American page carried 76 Rouge Dior shades against 18 on Nykaa’s Indian listing, and 42 Forever Skin Glow shades — 45 on the British page — against 19 on Nykaa and 21 on Sephora India. These are retailer assortments on one date rather than a statement by Dior, but the shelf a buyer in Mumbai sees is roughly a quarter of the lipstick range and under half the foundation range.

Who Dior Beauty is actually for

The prices place it. Almost the whole readable Indian makeup line sits above ₹4,000 — lipsticks at ₹4,700 to ₹5,200, foundations at ₹6,700 to ₹7,700, mascara at ₹4,600 — with the cheapest readable item a brow product at ₹2,500 and the range topping out at ₹14,200 for a 100 ml fragrance. This is a luxury counter line by any Indian measure.

It suits a buyer who wants the fragrance heroes at close to what an American pays, and who values a brand that prints a panel size next to a number. It suits a shade-matching buyer much less: a fifth of the global lipstick range is on the Indian shelf. And it does not suit anyone who wants a first-party Indian relationship, because there is not one to have. A brand fronted here by companies other than its own is a structure Indian shoppers know from footwear; our Bata audit sets out the best-known case, and our Campus audit the opposite one, where the brand owns the factory.

Reputation and controversies

Start with the most recent decided case. On 12 May 2026 the Delhi District Court dismissed Parfums Christian Dior’s own trademark suit over the mark POISON, brought in 2012 against sellers of perfumery called “POISON POT”. The suit was dismissed in full, the interim orders vacated, and Dior ordered to pay ₹2 lakh in costs to the first defendant.

Among its reasons, the court found no deceptive similarity, holding that the two products had different visual presentation and separate customer bases, and it noted the price gap: Dior’s product at ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 against the defendant’s at ₹700 to ₹800.

The judgment does not record a finding on whether DIOR or POISON is a well-known mark in India. It is a district-court decision of 12 May 2026, reported here as decided on that date.

Dior has won in India too, and it is worth noting which Dior. Parfums Christian Dior obtained an ex-parte permanent injunction and ₹75,000 in damages on 1 May 2015 against a trader using CHRISTIAN DIOR and DIOR on leather goods. Christian Dior Couture — the clothing company, not the beauty one — won a decree with ₹3 lakh in damages over counterfeit sunglasses on 11 April 2023, and another on 29 February 2024 with ₹1 lakh against each of three defendants, after court-appointed commissioners recovered 40 Dior sunglasses and 40 frames of inferior quality.

Each of those decided outcomes concerns leather goods, sunglasses or frames rather than perfume, makeup or skincare.

On advertising, the Advertising Standards Council of India’s published complaint-outcomes database carries no outcome for Dior, Christian Dior, Guerlain, Givenchy or LVMH as at 2 September 2026.

On animal testing, the brand and PETA’s directory differ, and both are quoted here. Dior’s own beauty page states that Parfums Christian Dior does not conduct animal testing, “in accordance with applicable European regulations”. PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies directory does not list Dior as cruelty-free, on the reasoning that some markets legally require testing. No certifier’s badge was shown on the Dior pages read.

Buying it in India

The channel matters here. Dior’s two Indian boutiques — DLF Emporio in Delhi and Jio World Plaza in Mumbai — list ready-to-wear, leather goods, shoes, accessories, sunglasses and timepieces between them. Neither lists beauty or fragrance. Every authorised online shelf we could verify belongs to somebody else: Nykaa, and Reliance’s Sephora India and Tira. No Dior company appears on the Indian register for beauty at all.

For reference, the Indian retail price for Sauvage Eau de Parfum 100 ml was ₹14,200 at the authorised retailers read, and the brand’s own range pages did not show a 150 ml or 500 ml Sauvage. Whatever the shop, check that the bottle size appears on Dior’s own range pages and read the carton before buying.

Check 01

Check the pack size against the brand’s range

Check the bottle size against the sizes on Dior’s own range pages. An unusual volume at a low price is worth questioning before you buy.

Check 02

Find the importer on the carton

The importer’s name and address and the country of origin are printed on the pack. The listings we read did not show them, so the box is where you check. Ask to see it before payment.

Check 03

Work out the price per gram

Divide price by net quantity. Rouge Dior at ₹5,100 for 3.5 g is about ₹1,470 a gram; Sauvage at ₹14,200 for 100 ml is ₹142 a millilitre. The lipstick is the extravagance, not the perfume.

Check 04

Read the footnote under the claim

Dior prints its test type and panel size. “24 hours of comfort” on Rouge Dior is a self-rating by at least 31 people rather than an instrumental test. Knowing which is which helps you weigh the number.

Check 05

Do not expect the boutique to stock it

Neither Indian Dior store lists beauty among its categories. If you want to try a shade in person, the counter you need is a multi-brand retailer’s, not Dior’s own.

Common questions

Is Dior Beauty a licence, like YSL Beauty?

No — and the history runs the other way. Parfums Christian Dior was already owned by LVMH when Christian Dior Couture was still held by the listed holding company. LVMH bought the couture house in 2017 for €6.5 billion, expressly to regroup the two.

Is Dior Beauty cheaper in India?

At the price on the shelf, no — the four products we priced on 2 September 2026 ran 5% to 17% above US list. Strip out 18% GST and the picture flips: India then sits 1% to 11% below the American pre-tax price.

Can I buy Dior makeup at the Dior store in Delhi or Mumbai?

Not on the evidence of the stores’ own category listings. DLF Emporio shows women’s and men’s fashion and timepieces; Jio World Plaza shows ready-to-wear, leather goods, shoes, accessories and sunglasses. Beauty appears in neither.

Is Dior cruelty-free?

Dior states that Parfums Christian Dior does not conduct animal testing, in accordance with applicable European regulations. PETA’s directory does not list Dior as cruelty-free, on the reasoning that some markets legally require testing. Both were read on 2 September 2026, and the section above sets out each position.

Why are there so few shades in India?

The Indian shelves we counted carried 18 Rouge Dior shades against 76 in America, and 19 to 21 foundation shades against 42 to 45. These are retailer assortments on one day, not something Dior has said about India — but they are what a buyer here can actually pick from.

How much does Dior Beauty sell in India?

No figure exists on the public record. LVMH discloses no country-level or brand-level revenue below its divisions, and no Indian operating company for the beauty business appears on the register to file accounts.

The FA take

Dior Beauty does well on disclosure: it publishes the test type and the panel size beside its numeric claims. And the price is closer to the US than many Indian buyers expect. At 5% to 17% over American list, and 1% to 11% under it before GST, a French luxury house is charging India roughly what it charges Americans — after a 20% import duty.

The limits are about access. We found no Dior beauty company on the Indian register and no Dior beauty counter of its own; neither Indian boutique lists beauty, so a shopper buys through a multi-brand retailer, and the listings we read did not show the importer or country of origin. The Indian lipstick shade range was about a quarter of the US one on the day counted.

The fragrance is the better value at ₹142 a millilitre; at ₹5,100 for 3.5 g, the lipstick is a luxury buy, so check the carton at an authorised retailer.
