Fenty Beauty Brand Audit: The Shade Range India Never Got

Fenty Beauty is a joint venture with LVMH's Kendo Brands and no party has ever published a share. Indian prices run 4.8% to 9.4% above the US list, and the shade ranges shrink at the border.

Fenty Beauty was built on one promise: forty foundation shades on day one, so nobody walked away empty-handed. Nine years on, the American site offers fifty. The Indian shelf offers considerably fewer, and on the products where a like-for-like count exists, India gets 43 of the 69 shades the brand sells at home. That is the first thing an Indian buyer should know before paying ₹2,400 for a lip gloss.

The second is that the ownership everybody repeats has never been published by anyone who would know.

The short answer

Fenty Beauty is a joint venture between Rihanna and Kendo Brands, LVMH’s beauty incubator, and no party has ever stated who holds what share. Indian prices run 4.8% to 9.4% above the American list, checked 2 September 2026, and the 50-shade Pro Filt’r foundation the brand was founded on could not be found on any of the three Indian retailers read that day.

How it started

The launch release of 7 September 2017 described the venture plainly: Rihanna, in partnership with Kendo Brands, an LVMH-owned beauty developer. The product that carried it was Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, in 40 shades. Within a year the shade count had become the industry’s benchmark for what a launch range should look like.

Fenty Skin followed on 31 July 2020, then fragrance and hair. Kendo’s own site now lists Fenty Beauty, Fenty Skin, Fenty Hair and Fenty Fragrance alongside OLEHENRIKSEN and Lip Lab, distributed in more than 60 countries. LVMH still carries the entry “Fenty Beauty by Rihanna – Since 2017” in its Perfumes and Cosmetics division, read on 2 September 2026.

A separate Fenty fashion house was announced in May 2019 and its ready-to-wear was put on hold on 10 February 2021, with both sides saying they would concentrate on cosmetics, skincare and lingerie. Savage X Fenty, the lingerie business, is not an LVMH company at all. Three ventures, three structures, and only one of them is the make-up.

What they actually make

Complexion, lips and eyes, sold out of one global assortment that gets edited on the way into each market. No manufacturer is named on any Fenty page read, American or Indian. That is normal at this price, but the brand’s own site does not say who makes the product either.

The shade edit is where the Indian assortment stops matching the American one, and the numbers are not small.

Counts read from fentybeauty.com and sephora.in on 2 September 2026.

The collapse is not uniform, and the exceptions matter. The lip liner loses one shade of sixteen. The We’re Even concealer tile in India states 50 shades, the same number as the American foundation range. The heaviest losses fall on colour cosmetics rather than on the complexion products the shade argument was actually about.

The foundation itself is the gap that should trouble a buyer most. Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, the 50-shade product the whole brand was built on, does not appear on Sephora India’s Fenty page, does not appear on Tira’s, and the single Pro Filt’r listing found on Nykaa is a 12 ml mini in 13 shades that was out of stock on 2 September 2026. The March 2024 launch coverage named it as a hero product for India.

A brand founded on the idea that nobody gets left out ships India about six shades in ten.

Worth knowing

Shade numbers on Indian retail tiles are the shop’s copy, not a stock count, and one sibling brand’s tile was already out of step with its own shade list. Open the selector and count before you trust the number.

What Fenty Beauty costs in India

Every product with a like-for-like American price costs more here. The band is tight and it never turns negative, which puts Fenty at the dear end of the imported prestige counter, alongside Dior and above Guerlain. Several bigger American and French houses undercut their own US list in India; this one does not.

US list, Gloss Bomb 9 ml
$23.00, about ₹2,194
Indian MRP
₹2,400
Gap
+9.4%
Checked on

That works out at ₹267 per millilitre of lip gloss. The Gloss Bomb Stix is ₹2,700 against $27, a gap of 4.8%; Gloss Bomb Heat is ₹2,700 against $26, or 8.9%; the Trace’d Out liner is ₹2,400 against $24, again 4.8%. Converted at ₹95.38 to the dollar, the Federal Reserve rate for 28 August 2026.

Lip make-up carries 20% basic customs duty under tariff heading 3304 per trade databases, plus a surcharge on the duty and 18% IGST. Compounded, that is roughly 44% on the assessable value before anyone’s margin. A 5% to 9% retail premium over the US shelf price is, on that arithmetic, a fairly disciplined outcome — the buyer is paying the border, not a gouge.

Who Fenty Beauty is actually for

Someone who wants a specific gloss or liner shade and accepts that the Indian shelf is an edit of the American one. The formulas are the same goods; the choice is narrower. If you want the foundation, check availability before you build a routine around it.

It is not for a buyer chasing value per millilitre. At ₹267 per ml, a lip gloss here costs about what a full-size Indian foundation costs per gram, and the same MRP-versus-shelf-price question this site asks of Bata and Metro applies with more force to an imported cosmetic, where the printed number is the number you pay.

Reputation and controversies

The ownership question is the one this audit exists to settle, and the answer is that it cannot be settled from anything either party has published. Fenty Beauty’s own FAQ says Rihanna is “Founder and CEO, and an owner” of Fenty Beauty and Fenty Skin, and that both are joint ventures with Kendo Brands. An indefinite article, and no percentage.

Reuters reported on 21 October 2025, citing people familiar with the matter, that Rihanna and LVMH each own half of the company, and that LVMH was exploring a sale of its stake with Evercore handling the process. LVMH declined to comment on that report. No transaction has been announced as at 2 September 2026, and LVMH still lists the brand among its Maisons. Anyone telling you Rihanna owns 50% is repeating an unnamed source, not a filing.

Whose hands a Fenty gloss passes through
  1. Fenty BeautyJoint venture between Rihanna and Kendo Brands
  2. Kendo BrandsA division of LVMH, the listed French luxury group
  3. Indosing Distribution Pvt LtdImporter of record, Bhiwandi; a Luxasia subsidiary
  4. Reliance Luxe Beauty LimitedNamed as marketer on the Sephora India listing

No LVMH company imports Fenty into India. The route runs through a Singapore-parented distributor incorporated in 2018 with paid-up capital of ₹5.7 lakh, and the marketer line belongs to Sephora India’s operating company, not to the brand.

On animal testing, the brand’s wording is unusually absolute: it never tests products or ingredients on animals, in any region, and does not permit suppliers or retailers to test on its behalf. PETA’s directory places Fenty Beauty under “may not be cruelty-free”, on the stated ground that the company has not signed PETA’s assurance. That is a paperwork gap rather than a finding of testing, and the brand displays no certifier’s badge.

Fenty Beauty has no ASCI complaint outcome on record as at 2 September 2026, over the whole life of that database. India’s case law carries nothing on the brand either. Both are true and neither is a compliment — an imported brand that barely advertises in the mass channels ASCI polices has little to be adjudicated on.

Buying it in India

Three retailers, three very different levels of disclosure, all read on the same day.

Fenty in India, 2017 to 2026
  • 2017Global launch, 40 foundation shades
  • 2024India entry on 7 March, through Nykaa’s cross-border store
  • 2025Reuters reports LVMH exploring a sale of its stake
  • 2026Still listed as an LVMH Maison; no transaction announced

Nine years in, and the Indian shelf is still younger than most of the shade range it sells.

Check 01

Find the importer line

The statutory block names the importer and the country of origin. On Sephora India it read Indosing Distribution Pvt Ltd, Bhiwandi, origin United States. If a listing shows no such block, you do not know who is answerable for the goods.

Check 02

Look for cross-border wording

The Nykaa listing read on 2 September 2026 was sold by an offshore trading company and stated that returns are not available on cross-border products. That is a different consumer position from a normal MRP-labelled import.

Check 03

Divide by the net volume

The Gloss Bomb is 9 ml, not the 36.7 g pack size printed beside it. ₹2,400 over 9 ml is ₹267 per ml. Do that sum before you compare it with anything else on the counter.

Check 04

Count the shades yourself

Open the shade selector rather than reading the number in the tile copy. The two Gloss Bomb ranges lose 37% and 63% of their American shade counts at the Indian border.

Check 05

Convert the US price

At about ₹95 to the dollar, a $23 gloss is ₹2,194 before duty. Anything far below the Indian MRP on a marketplace deserves a hard look at the seller and the seal.

Sellers of Indian footwear brands such as Campus print a manufacturer on the box because they own the factory. An imported cosmetic gives you an importer instead, and that name is the only party you can hold to anything.

Common questions

Does Rihanna own 50% of Fenty Beauty?

No published record says so. Fenty Beauty’s FAQ calls her “Founder and CEO, and an owner” and describes the business as a joint venture with Kendo Brands. The 50/50 figure comes from a Reuters report of 21 October 2025 citing unnamed sources, on which LVMH declined to comment.

Is Fenty Beauty owned by LVMH?

Partly, and the wording matters. Rihanna’s joint-venture partner is Kendo Brands, a division of LVMH, and LVMH lists the brand among its Maisons. It is a joint venture rather than a wholly owned house.

Is the 50-shade foundation sold in India?

It could not be found on Sephora India, Tira or Nykaa on 2 September 2026. The only Pro Filt’r listing found was a 12 ml mini in 13 shades on Nykaa, marked out of stock. Ask the counter before assuming your shade exists here.

Is Fenty Beauty cruelty-free?

The brand says it never tests on animals in any region and does not permit suppliers or retailers to do so. PETA lists it under “may not be cruelty-free” because it has not signed PETA’s assurance. Animal testing of cosmetics has been unlawful in India since 21 May 2014 in any case.

Why is Fenty dearer in India than in the United States?

Lip make-up attracts 20% basic customs duty plus a surcharge and 18% IGST, roughly 44% on the assessable value. The Indian premium of 4.8% to 9.4% is smaller than that stack, so the margin is being absorbed somewhere along the chain.

Did LVMH shut Fenty down?

No. The ready-to-wear fashion house was put on hold on 10 February 2021, and the same statement said both sides would concentrate on cosmetics, skincare and lingerie. The beauty joint venture continued and is still trading.

The FA take

The formulas are good and the Indian premium is modest — 4.8% to 9.4% over the US list against a duty stack of roughly 44% means somebody is absorbing the difference rather than passing it on. If you want a Gloss Bomb, buy it from a shop that prints the importer’s name and pay the ₹2,400 without feeling robbed.

What does not survive the journey is the argument the brand was built on. India gets 43 of the 69 shades counted across four products, one range loses 63% of its options, and the 50-shade foundation could not be found on any of three retailers on 2 September 2026. Meanwhile the founder’s stake, the fact every article about this brand states as though it were filed somewhere, exists only as an unnamed source in a wire report the parent would not comment on.

Buy the gloss, ignore the fable: on the Indian shelf, inclusivity is a marketing position that lost seven shades at customs, and nobody has ever told you what Rihanna owns.
