Fossil Brand Audit: A Licensing House That Quit Smartwatches

Fossil makes watches for Michael Kors, Armani and Diesel, left the smartwatch business in 2024, and is shrinking its way back to profit. What that means for buyers.

Fossil is an American fashion watch company that also designs and makes watches for other people’s brands. In India its own watches typically sell around ₹10,000, imported and carrying full duty. Two facts explain the brand better than any product description: it left the smartwatch business in January 2024, and a large part of what it does is manufacture watches that carry someone else’s name on the dial.

The short answer

Fossil sells design rather than watchmaking. A Townsman costs about ₹10,395 at an authorised Indian retailer, a price carrying an import stack worth roughly 49% of assessable value. The same company also builds the watches sold under Michael Kors, Emporio Armani and Diesel, and it left the smartwatch business in January 2024. Buy one for the way it looks, not for value or resale.

How it started

Fossil was founded in 1984 and, in the company’s own words, “the Fossil brand was the springboard for everything the company has become”. It went public in 1993 and later entered the S&P 500.

The idea was straightforward and, for its moment, clever. Swiss watchmaking sold precision at high prices and Japanese quartz sold accuracy cheaply, but nobody was selling a watch primarily as an accessory — something bought to match an outfit rather than to keep time. Fossil built a business on vintage-inspired design, tin packaging and a price that let a customer own several.

The second business grew out of the first. Having built the design and supply chain to produce fashion watches at scale, Fossil began doing the same for fashion houses that had a name but no watch capability. That is now central to what the company is.

What they actually make

Fossil Group operates two portfolios: brands it owns, and brands it makes watches for under licence.

This is the single most useful thing an Indian buyer can know about the fashion watch aisle. Several of the brands sitting at different price points in the same shop come out of the same company, with broadly the same movements and case construction.

You are choosing a badge and a design, not a different manufacturer.

The other defining decision was strategic retreat. In January 2024 Fossil announced it was leaving the smartwatch business. Having spent years building Wear OS watches under its own and licensed names, it concluded it could not compete with Apple, Samsung and the cheap Indian brands at either end.

What Fossil costs in India

A Fossil Townsman sells at about ₹10,395 through an authorised Indian retailer as of August 2026. That is roughly the middle of the brand’s Indian range.

Fossil watches are imported, so they carry the full stack before an importer or retailer takes anything.

What an imported watch pays
  1. Basic customs duty20% of assessable value
  2. Cess20% of that basic customs duty
  3. Social welfare surchargePart of the same import stack
  4. IGST18% on the landed value
  5. Total incidenceRoughly 49% of assessable value

That is what an imported watch carries before anyone adds margin.

It is the same wall that keeps Seiko and Tissot starting where they do in India, and it is why Titan holds about 55% of the market below ₹25,000.

An honest limitation, stated plainly: neither Fossil’s Indian site nor its international ones publish prices in a form we could verify, so a like-for-like global price against the Indian figure could not be confirmed for this audit and is not estimated here. The Indian price above comes from an authorised multi-brand retailer rather than a marketplace listing.

What can be judged is whether the proposition holds at Indian prices, and that depends on where Fossil’s business is going.

Who Fossil is actually for

Fossil suits the buyer who wants a good-looking watch as an accessory and is honest with themselves that this is the purchase. The designs are genuinely well done, the leather straps are decent, and at around ₹10,000 a Fossil looks more expensive than it is — which is precisely the job it was built to do.

It works well as a second or third watch, as a gift, and for anyone who wants to match a watch to an outfit rather than own one watch forever.

Skip Fossil if value per rupee is the priority. At ₹10,000 you are paying roughly half the price in duty and importer margin, and Titan offers more steel, a bigger service network and no import premium at the same money. Skip it if you want mechanical watchmaking or resale value, neither of which fashion watches provide. And if you were considering a Fossil smartwatch, note the company exited that business in January 2024 — buying old stock means buying a platform with no future support.

Reputation and controversies

Fossil has no major documented controversy in India as of August 2026. No regulatory action, product recall, advertising adjudication, labour finding or pattern of consumer commission orders against the brand could be sourced.

The substantive criticisms are commercial and strategic rather than ethical. The company misjudged smartwatches, spending years on a Wear OS business it abandoned in January 2024, and its core fashion watch category has been squeezed from both directions — by smartwatches above and by cheap Indian brands below. Sales fell 12.3% in 2025.

There is also a transparency point worth naming. The licensing model is not hidden, but it is not advertised either, and most buyers of a Michael Kors or Armani Exchange watch do not know they are buying a Fossil product. That is legal and normal in the industry; it is still information a buyer paying a fashion-house premium deserves to have.

Buying it in India

Check 01

Buy from an authorised seller

Use Fossil India stores, Helios, or authorised multi-brand watch retailers. On a marketplace, confirm the seller is authorised rather than a third party.

Check 02

Expect fakes, most of all on the licensed brands

Counterfeit risk is high for Fossil and higher still for Michael Kors and Armani Exchange, which are among the most copied watches in Indian markets. The name carries a premium and the construction is simple to imitate.

Check 03

Read the four tells before you pay

Look at the case back engraving quality, the movement’s smoothness, the strap leather and stitching, and the serial number.

Check 04

Treat a steep discount as a warning

A heavy cut from an unknown seller usually means a “first copy”, the common Indian term for a counterfeit.

Check 05

Buying it abroad genuinely saves money

The Indian price carries roughly 49% in duty and cess that an overseas purchase does not. Weigh that against warranty service, which is easier to claim here.

Common questions

Does Fossil make Michael Kors and Armani watches?

Yes. Fossil Group designs and manufactures watches under licence for Michael Kors, Emporio Armani, Armani Exchange and Diesel, among others over the years. The name on the dial is licensed; the watch is Fossil’s.

Why is Fossil expensive in India?

Import duty. An imported wristwatch pays 20% basic customs duty, a cess, a social welfare surcharge and 18% IGST, coming to roughly 49% of assessable value before margin. Indian-made brands like Titan pay 18% GST and none of the rest.

Did Fossil stop making smartwatches?

Yes. Fossil announced in January 2024 that it was leaving the smartwatch business. Buying remaining stock means buying a platform the manufacturer has exited, with no assurance of future software support.

Is Fossil a luxury brand?

No. Fossil is a fashion watch brand — quartz movements, design-led, typically around ₹10,000 in India. It does not compete with Swiss watchmaking on movements, materials or resale value, and it has never claimed to.

Is Fossil worth buying in India?

Only if you want it for the design. At the same money Titan gives more watch without the import premium. Fossil earns its place as a second watch or an accessory, not as a value purchase or a lasting one.

The FA take

A good-looking watch at a price inflated by import duty — buy it for the design, never for the value.
