GANT Brand Audit: Swiss Owner, Jaipur Operator, India Prices

Who owns GANT, which Jaipur company operates gant.in, which countries of origin 40 Indian listings declare, and what its shirts cost against MRP in India.
GANT brand audit by FashionAudit: GANT logo and the headline “Swiss Owner, Jaipur Operator, India Prices” over a folded pastel oxford shirt and a cable-knit cotton sweater

GANT sells oxford shirts under a Swedish name, an American founding story and a Swiss owner. In India its median listed price on 15 September 2026 was ₹6,049, and its shirts are mostly made here rather than imported.

Its Indian site is operated by a Jaipur company, Samarth Lifestyle Retailing.

The short answer

GANT belongs to Maus Frères SA of Geneva, which also owns Lacoste. Its Indian site says it is owned and operated by Samarth Lifestyle Retailing Private Limited, a Jaipur company incorporated in 1995. Across 100 listings read on 15 September 2026 it charged 80.9% of MRP, and India was the declared origin on 21 of 40 records read.

Who owns GANT

One shirt brand, four homes
  1. Bernard GantmacherNew Haven, Connecticut, 1949 — a shirtmaker’s business
  2. Phillips-Van HeusenBuys the US operations from Crystal Brands, 1995
  3. Pyramid SportswearSweden buys it for $71 million, 1999; Stockholm listing 2006
  4. Maus FrèresAcquires the group in 2008; delisted 20 March that year

The Swedish chapter is why the brand reads as Scandinavian; the money has gone to Geneva since 2008.

Maus Frères SA calls itself a joint stock company wholly owned by the founding Maus and Nordmann families. Its brand arm, MF Brands Group, holds four names: Aigle, GANT, Lacoste and Tecnifibre.

That matters if you are shopping. Lacoste and GANT sit a shelf apart in most Indian showrooms and read as rivals, and they have the same ultimate owner, Maus Frères, whose MF Brands Group lists both.

MF Brands’ own GANT page calls it “the American-Swedish shirtmaking brand”, and carries two figures for the brand’s size that do not agree: a card reading 234 stores in 61 countries, and a sentence below saying 750 stores in 70 countries. Neither carries a year.

The accounts that exist, and the ones that do not

Maus Frères publishes no financial results, and MF Brands’ site has no finance or sustainability section at all. Sweden is the opposite: Gant AB files accounts anyone can read.

YearGant AB revenue, SEK thousandEmployees
20212,560,890172
20223,838,162185
20233,735,278214
20243,602,388212
20253,636,203203

Read that carefully. The Swedish registry describes Gant AB as wholesale of clothing and footwear along with trademark acquisition and licensing — the wholesale and trademark company, not the brand’s worldwide turnover. No group accounts were found.

Who sells you GANT in India

gant.in’s terms of service state that the site is “an Internet based E-Commerce portal owned and operated by Samarth Lifestyle Retailing Pvt Ltd”. Its contact page puts that company at 706, 7th Floor, Kailash Tower, Lal Kothi, Jaipur, and its privacy policy places payment disputes under the exclusive jurisdiction of Jaipur courts.

On the company register, Samarth Lifestyle Retailing Private Limited, CIN U24114RJ1995PTC009990, was incorporated at Jaipur on 12 May 1995, under the former name Venus Coatings Pvt Ltd.

The company one door along

Iconic Fashion Retailing Private Limited sits at 701, 7th Floor of the same Kailash Tower, five doors from Samarth’s 706. Incorporated on 13 May 2011, it has directors in common with Samarth.

Iconic runs a multi-brand chain. Its site lists GANT alongside True Religion and DKNY, and says it carries more than 40 brands across more than 25 stores.

Sixteen of the 40 entries on GANT’s Indian store locator are named ICONIC rather than GANT, and the Jaipur store is at G-3, Kailash Tower — the ground floor of the building whose seventh floor holds both offices.

How GANT trades in India

GANT sells in India through gant.in, 40 listed stores and the marketplaces, where three sellers of record covered all 40 declarations read on 15 September 2026.

Money is published. Samarth reported operating revenue of ₹275.63 crore for the year to 31 March 2025, down 3%; Iconic reported ₹319.56 crore, up 1%. Neither belongs to GANT alone, because nothing splits either company’s revenue by brand.

The sellers of record were Omnitech Retail on 22 records, Samarth on 11 and Iconic on 7 — two of the three being the Jaipur companies behind the brand’s own site and stores. By comparison, Diesel‘s seller the same day was a third-party importer on 40 of 40.

What GANT costs in India

One hundred listings were read on 15 September 2026, from a facet carrying 1,868 items.

Median listed MRP
₹6,049
Share of MRP actually charged
80.9%
Listings reduced
57 of 100
Checked on
15 September 2026

The shape behind that number is the interesting part. Those hundred listings carried 37 distinct MRPs and only four discount rungs — a grid of a few percentages, not a decision taken garment by garment. Lacoste, read the same day, had 67 distinct MRPs and six rungs.

The brand’s own site agrees with the marketplace more than most do. Of 18 oxford shirts on gant.in that day, nine carried a struck-through comparison price, against 57 of 100 reduced on the marketplace. Those shirts listed between ₹5,099 and ₹8,999, and cotton trousers at ₹14,999.

What import duty does and does not explain

Every product sold in India carries a Legal Metrology declaration: the MRP inclusive of taxes, the country of origin, and the manufacturer, packer or importer.

Across 40 GANT declarations read on 15 September 2026, India was the declared origin on 21, Turkey on 6 and Hong Kong on 5. Twenty distinct manufacturer names appeared, two records carried none, and every one is an Indian garment exporter.

So customs duty does not apply to most of what GANT sells here, because a shirt made in India never crosses a border. On the imported minority, duty falls on the landed value rather than the shelf price, so it accounts for little of the Indian MRP, the same finding the site reached on Levi’s.

The comparison that could not be taken

This site normally prices the same garment here and in the brand’s home market. On GANT it could not be done: the two sites share no product identifier, gant.com using codes like 3263019-435 and gant.in codes like gms26-003000300662. No shirt appears on both, so no price gap and no conversion is printed here.

What GANT publishes about where its clothes are made

The brand and its owner publish little on this.

The published supply-chain record, in full
  • Content pagesNo gant.com page on suppliers, factories, audits or a code of conduct was found
  • Sustainability pageThree paragraphs of general prose
  • Factory listNone found, for any year, and no supplier list
  • CertificationNo GOTS, OEKO-TEX, Better Cotton or similar membership named
  • The ownerMF Brands’ site has no sustainability or supply-chain section

gant.in, read on 15 September 2026, did not link to gant.com.

The sustainability page reads, in part: “Sustainability is woven into everything we do… we work to reduce our footprint, improve industry standards and create pieces that combine timeless style with responsible practices.”

The best guide to where a GANT shirt sold in India was made is the origin line on its own label.

Compare a brand one price band below. Jack & Jones‘s parent publishes a public factory list, updated six times a year by its own statement, and every Indian manufacturer named on that brand’s listings turns up on it. We found no comparable list for GANT.

What the shirts claim, and what stands behind them

GANT makes precise-sounding claims. Its heritage page says the locker loop, box pleat and back-collar button “set the standard for how an Oxford Cloth Button-Down should look”, and records an Esquire Best Shirt award in 1963.

The Indian product copy is in the same register. A pink pinpoint oxford at ₹8,999 is “crafted from high-quality pinpoint cotton”; a grey classic oxford at ₹7,499 is “made from premium quality cotton”. The owner’s page adds “traceable and sustainable plant-based materials globally” and a trademarked Tech Prep claim about moving moisture away from the body.

The pages read on gant.com, gant.in and the owner’s site did not cite a durability, pilling, shrinkage or fabric-weight test, a certification, or a named mill or weaver.

The oxford-shirt descriptions on gant.in carried no fibre percentage, thread count, origin or manufacturer, and the gant.com product page read the same day carried none of those either; the origin and manufacturer appear on the marketplace declarations and the label instead.

Buying GANT in India

GANT has one page on counterfeits, on its global site. It warns that fake GANT items still appear in stores, street markets and online, cautions buyers about listings using words such as “replica”, “dupe” or “overrun”, and asks anyone who suspects one to use the contact form. “First copy” is the Indian term for the same thing.

That page does not describe an authentication code, hologram, serial number or QR check, or list authorised retailers. gant.in has no brand-protection page and names no authorised online channel in India, so buying from a listed store or gant.in and keeping the bill is the practical safeguard.

Worth knowing

GANT’s Indian store locator listed 40 stores on 15 September 2026. Store lists change, so ring ahead before travelling.

What to check before you pay

Check 01

Turn the packaging over

It carries MRP, origin and the manufacturer. On 21 of the 40 records read it said India; on two it named nobody.

Check 02

Ask whose name is on the bill

Three sellers covered all 40 marketplace records, two of them the Jaipur companies behind gant.in.

Check 03

Do not wait for a deep sale

Only four discount rungs appeared across 100 listings, at 80.9% of MRP overall.

Check 04

Ask for the composition in writing

The product pages read on both sites did not show a fibre percentage. Above ₹7,000, check the label before you pay.

Reputation, and what has been decided

GANT enforces its mark in India, alongside its Geneva stablemate. On 9 April 2026 a Delhi District Court sitting in its commercial jurisdiction delivered final judgment in CS (COMM) 125/2022, brought jointly by Lacoste S.A. and Gant AB against a trader in tags and labels. The suit was partially decreed: the court granted injunctive relief, restraining the defendant from using, selling, marketing or manufacturing the disputed mark and label, and refused the rest — damages of ₹25 lakh, a restraint on assets and delivery up of goods, all rejected for want of sufficient evidence of quantifiable harm. No appeal was reported as at 15 September 2026.

The two brands filing one suit together reflects the shared ownership described above.

A second suit by the same two companies, in the Madras High Court, was dismissed as withdrawn on 18 August 2025.

Who GANT is actually for

GANT suits a buyer who wants a well-cut oxford button-down, likes the collegiate look, and is buying the shirt rather than the story. At a median MRP of ₹6,049 with 80.9% charged, it prices roughly where a good Indian-made premium shirt should.

It suits you less if you want detailed product information online: the pages read gave no fibre percentage, mill, factory list, certification or test result. And it suits you least if the Swedish name is part of what you are buying — the brand was founded in Connecticut by an American shirtmaker, has been Swiss-owned since 2008, and most of what reaches an Indian shelf under it was made here.

Common questions

Who owns GANT?

Maus Frères SA of Geneva, a Swiss family holding company, through its brand arm MF Brands Group. It bought GANT in 2008, two years after the company listed in Stockholm. The same group owns Lacoste, Aigle and Tecnifibre.

Is GANT a Swedish brand?

In part. It was founded in New Haven, Connecticut in 1949 by Bernard Gantmacher, sold to Sweden’s Pyramid Sportswear for $71 million in 1999, listed in Stockholm in 2006, and has been Swiss-owned since 2008. Its operating company is still Swedish.

Who sells GANT in India?

gant.in states it is owned and operated by Samarth Lifestyle Retailing Private Limited, a Jaipur company registered in 1995. Its stores include GANT and ICONIC outlets, and Samarth and Iconic were sellers of record on 18 of 40 marketplace records read on 15 September 2026.

Is GANT made in India?

Mostly, on the evidence available. India was the declared country of origin on 21 of 40 listings read on 15 September 2026, Turkey on 6 and Hong Kong on 5, and all twenty named manufacturers are Indian garment exporters. Origin varies by style, so read the declaration on the packaging.

How can I tell if a GANT shirt is genuine?

The brand’s pages describe no code, hologram, serial number or other check, and list no authorised Indian retailers or online sellers. Buying from a listed store or from gant.in and keeping the bill is the practical safeguard.

Does GANT discount in India?

Moderately, and predictably. Of 100 listings read on 15 September 2026, 57 carried a reduction and the brand charged 80.9% of MRP — but there were only four distinct discount rungs across 37 different MRPs, which reads as a pricing grid rather than per-garment pricing.

The FA take

The shirts are the easy part. At a median MRP of ₹6,049 with 80.9% of it charged, GANT prices roughly where a good premium oxford should, and India was the declared origin on 21 of the 40 listings read, so customs duty accounts for little of the shelf price.

Online product detail is thin. The pages read showed no factory list, code of conduct or certification, and no fibre percentage on a ₹8,999 “high-quality pinpoint cotton” shirt, so the label is where to look. gant.in is operated by a Jaipur company, Samarth Lifestyle Retailing.

A good, mostly Indian-made shirt under a Swedish name and a Swiss owner, at a fair premium price — buy it for the cut, and read the label for the rest.
