Guess Brand Audit: Mostly-PU Handbags, Own Indian Arm

Who owns Guess after its January 2026 take-private, which three companies sell it in India, and why most of its handbags are declared PU, not leather.
Guess brand audit by FashionAudit: Guess logo and the headline “Mostly-PU Handbags, Own Indian Arm” over a fitted denim jacket

Guess sells handbags, denim, footwear, watches and fragrance in India, and a shopper meets the brand through three different companies. On the marketplace shelf the median listing sits at ₹8,400; on the brand’s own site, handbag MRPs run from about ₹7,200 to ₹30,000. The most useful thing about it is also the plainest: on most of its own bag pages the declared material is PU, and the page says so.

The short answer

Guess stopped being a New York listed company in January 2026. Its Indian arm, Guess? India Private Limited, is a 100% subsidiary of the group and the seller of record on 22 of 40 marketplace records read on 15 September 2026. On the same forty records, 20 showed no manufacturer or importer name. On the brand’s own site that line is filled, and most handbags are declared PU rather than leather.

What Guess actually sells here

Search the brand on Myntra and the shelf looks like a handbag business. Of 100 listings read on 15 September 2026 under the GUESS facet, 94 were handbags. The two Guess facets there carry a catalogue of 8,931 between them.

That is how the marketplace files the brand, though, not the brand’s Indian range, and it would be wrong to read one off the other. The brand’s own shop, guess.in, opened in April 2025 and carries men’s and women’s sections with shirts, T-shirts, polos, jeans and innerwear, alongside handbags, footwear, watches, men’s accessories, lingerie and perfume.

Both readings are true at once, and you need both. The shelf most Indians will scroll is 94% bags; the range the brand actually sells here is much wider, and to see it you have to go to its own site or its own stores.

Who owns Guess now

This is where most writing about the brand is out of date. It is no longer a New York listed company.

The take-private completed in January 2026, and the structure it left behind has three parts. Authentic Brands Group holds 51% of substantially all the Guess intellectual property. The founders — Maurice, Paul and Nicolai Marciano — with chief executive Carlos Alberini and related entities hold the other 49% of it. And current management owns 100% of the operating company, the company that trades and owns the Indian subsidiary. Guess?, Inc. then filed a Form 15 in February 2026, ending the registration of its securities and with it the duty to publish accounts.

What changed above the brand
  1. Guess?, Inc., listed in New YorkLast annual report filed 11 April 2025, for the year to 1 February 2025
  2. Take-private completesJanuary 2026; Authentic Brands Group takes 51% of substantially all the IP
  3. Founders and management keep the restMarcianos and Alberini 49% of the IP; management 100% of the operating company
  4. Registration terminatedForm 15 filed February 2026 — no more public accounts

That split matters practically: the company owning the trademarks is not the company running the shops. Authentic Brands Group has held Reebok since 2022 on the same shape — a licensing house holding a name while others make and sell the goods.

None of the ownership labels this site uses describes that split neatly. Guess is filed here as independent because its founders and managers are still in it and no outside group controls the trading company — but half the trademark sits with a brand-management firm, and you should know that before taking the label at face value.

Three companies stand behind one shopfront

India is the cleanest part of the structure, and better than the shelf suggests.

Guess? India Private Limited is a 100% subsidiary of the group. That is not an inference from a press release: it comes from Exhibit 21.1 to the parent’s last annual report, where the row reads “Guess? India Private Limited | India | 100%”. The company was incorporated on 25 May 2018, holds a GST registration whose nature of business includes “Import”, and filed accounts for the year ended 31 March 2025.

Behind it sit two more parties. Gaurik Lifestyle Private Limited runs the Guess stores, under what its own corporate site calls a “non-exclusive Franchise agreement with Guess? India Private Limited, to open retail stores at different locations under the Guess? Brand”. The same group has held the Skechers franchise here since 2019. Separately, Tata CLiQ is the named franchise partner for the Guess Jeans line, announced on 15 January 2025 as its “official retailer”.

Who you are actually buying from
  • Guess? India Private LimitedThe 100% subsidiary — imports and wholesales; runs guess.in
  • Gaurik Lifestyle Private LimitedNon-exclusive franchisee — runs the Guess stores
  • Tata UniStore Limited (Tata CLiQ)Franchise partner for the Guess Jeans line since January 2025

Three companies sit behind the one brand name.

On 22 of 40 marketplace records read, the seller of record was the brand’s own Indian subsidiary.

What the label declares

The Legal Metrology declaration on a retail package gives the name and address of the manufacturer or packer, and for an imported package, the importer. It is the most useful line on any listing, and it is printed on the box too, so you can read it in the shop. Forty Guess records were read in full on 15 September 2026.

What was readCount, of 40
Manufacturer or importer line left blank20
Guess Europe SAGL named on the line18
Guess? India Private Limited as seller of record22
Net quantity declared38
Country of origin given as Myanmar16

The good half first. Guess is the one expensive foreign label on that shelf whose own Indian company is the seller of record on most records. Read the same day, Diesel’s seller was a third-party importer on 40 of 40, Hugo Boss’s on 38 of 40 and Ralph Lauren’s on 39 of 40. Buying from the brand’s own subsidiary is a different proposition, and Guess earns the point.

What the blanks mean

The other half: twenty of the forty records showed no manufacturer or importer name. On the brand’s own site the line is filled properly — one bag page names “Guess? India Private Limited” with a Gurugram address and gives Italy as the origin, another names the company without an address and gives Myanmar. Both readings belong here. Who prints the declaration on a marketplace listing is not established. A buyer’s job is simple — look for the line, and prefer the listing that carries it.

Sixteen of the forty records declare Myanmar as the country of origin, nine Indonesia, eight Vietnam and five Cambodia. That is what the records say, and nothing more is drawn from it.

What Guess costs in India

Across 100 listings read on 15 September 2026, Guess charged 73.0% of MRP, with 95 of 100 reduced and a median listing price of ₹8,400. A retail group’s own offer document, reported in May 2026, corroborates that from another direction: a Guess average selling price of ₹7,299 and an average order value of ₹11,303 for the nine months to December 2025.

The interesting number is not the discount but its shape. Those 100 listings carried 24 distinct MRPs and only four distinct discount rungs. Four rungs across twenty-four price points is a grid — pricing set by band rather than item by item. Read the percentage as the rung an item was filed under, and judge the bag on the price you actually pay.

What duty does and does not explain

The goods are imported, so duty is a live question here in a way it is not for a brand making its stock in India. On the handbag tariff lines — leather bags, and bags with a plastic or textile outer surface — the basic customs duty reads 15%, with a social welfare surcharge of 10% of that duty and 18% IGST on top. That figure comes from commercial tariff mirrors read on 15 September 2026 rather than from the customs notification itself, and one older mirror still shows 10% on the same lines. Treat 15% as the working figure, not the last word.

Either way, the arithmetic does not carry a ₹13,000 MRP on its own. Duty is charged on the landed value of the goods — what the importer paid — not on the shelf price, and that value is a fraction of MRP. Where an Indian price looks high, the bigger part is a margin decision rather than a tax.

What the claims stand on

The material disclosure is genuinely good. On guess.in each product page carries a “Composition & Care” block naming the primary material, and on most handbags read on 15 September 2026 that material is PU — polyurethane, a plastic coating on a fabric backing, not leather. The Silia crossbody is “crafted from 100% PU fabric”; the Jane tote is 100% PU. Leather appears at the top of the range, on the ₹30,000 Alizee crossbody and on footwear. A brand selling ₹9,100 bags that says PU on the page has done something worth crediting — and you can check it in seconds.

Every handbag page read carries the line “This item is made with recycled components”, and the Guess Jeans launch describes an Airwash process said to “significantly reduce” water and energy use by using air and bubbles instead of water and pumice stones; on the pages read on 15 September 2026, neither cites a percentage, baseline or certification.

Authentication and warranty

No authentication method is published. Neither the Indian site’s terms nor the group’s own pages carry an authenticity statement, a list of authorised sellers, a hologram, a serial or a code to check. For comparison, Hugo Boss’s corporate site publishes a fake-products page.

What it publishes instead is a list of official stores. Set that against the warranty in Guess? India’s own terms: three months on handbags and one month on apparel from delivery, plus a 30-day withdrawal right online. That three-month cover applies across the range, up to bags with a ₹30,000 MRP.

Who Guess is actually for

This is a logo-forward accessories brand at roughly ₹7,000 to ₹13,000 for a bag. If you want the look, the hardware and something that reads as branded at a mall price, Guess delivers it, and it tells you what the bag is made of before you buy.

Skip it if you are buying leather. Most of the range is declared PU. If leather is the point, go to the leather pieces at the top of the range or spend the same money on a smaller, plainer leather bag elsewhere.

The apparel is a separate judgement, sold mainly through the brand’s own site and stores, so weigh it against the mid-premium denim you would otherwise buy — and remember the one-month warranty. The footwear sits against mall names such as Crocs on price rather than performance.

Record and reputation

No advertising adjudication naming the brand was found on the searches made on 15 September 2026. Findings of that kind are self-regulatory rather than law in any case, and this is nothing found rather than nothing there.

On the money, a register mirror gives Guess? India operating revenue of ₹168.45 crore for the year ended 31 March 2025. Trade press from June 2025 reported ₹162 crore for FY24 and a ₹300 crore target for FY25. The two figures are consistent with each other; the ₹300 crore was a target, and the register figure for that year is below it.

Worth knowing

The newest store count Guess has published for India is 21, dated June 2025, with a plan to add 18 more. That is fifteen months old. Treat any store number quoted today, including that one, as stale until the company gives a fresh one.

Buying it in India

Check 01

Read the material line before the price

On guess.in the “Composition & Care” block names the primary material, and on most handbags it says PU. If you are paying for leather, make the page say leather.

Check 02

Look for the importer on the listing

The importer line names the company answerable for an imported product. The brand’s own pages carry it; on a marketplace, look for it and prefer the listing that shows it.

Check 03

Count the warranty, not the discount

Guess? India’s terms give three months on handbags and one month on apparel, with a 30-day withdrawal right online. That is the cover you are buying.

Check 04

Treat the discount as a band

A hundred listings showed 24 MRPs and four discount rungs. The percentage tells you which band an item sits in, not how good the deal is.

Common questions

Who owns Guess now?

Since January 2026 it has been private. Authentic Brands Group holds 51% of substantially all the Guess intellectual property, the Marciano family and chief executive Carlos Alberini hold 49%, and current management owns 100% of the operating company. The company terminated its US share registration in February 2026.

Is Guess sold officially in India?

Yes. Guess? India Private Limited is a 100% subsidiary of the group, incorporated in 2018, and it runs guess.in, which opened in April 2025. Stores are run by a franchisee, and the Guess Jeans line has a separate franchise arrangement with Tata CLiQ announced in January 2025.

Are Guess handbags real leather?

Mostly not. On the brand’s own Indian site, the declared primary material on most handbags is PU, a polyurethane coating on a fabric backing. Leather appears on higher-priced pieces such as the ₹30,000 Alizee crossbody and on some footwear. The material is named on each product page.

Why are Guess listings always discounted?

Of 100 listings read on 15 September 2026, 95 were reduced and the average price charged was 73.0% of MRP. Those listings carried 24 distinct MRPs but only four discount rungs, which points to pricing set by band. Judge the bag on the price you pay.

How can I tell a genuine Guess bag?

No authentication method is published — no code, hologram, serial or verification service, on either the Indian or the global site. What the brand publishes is a list of its official stores and its own shop, so channel is the check: buy from guess.in, a Guess store, or a seller whose name you can read on the listing.

How many Guess stores are there in India?

The most recent published figure is 21, given in April and again in June 2025, with a stated plan to add 18 more. No newer count has been published, so that number is now fifteen months old and should be treated as out of date.

The FA take

Guess does two things its neighbours on the same shelf do not. Its own Indian subsidiary is the seller of record on 22 of 40 records, so the company taking your money is the brand’s own. And it tells you the bag is PU, on the page, before you pay — at ₹9,100 that is worth more than any amount of marketing copy.

Against that: twenty of forty marketplace records showed no importer name, while the brand’s own site fills the line, so guess.in or a Guess store is the simpler place to buy. A ₹30,000 bag carries a three-month warranty.

Buy the PU bag knowing it is PU, at 73% of MRP, and you have bought exactly what you were shown — just do not expect leather or a long warranty at that price.
