Red Chief is an Indian leather footwear brand from Kanpur, known for tan boots and brown leather formals. It launched in 1997 and the shoes are made by Leayan Global Private Limited at that company’s own plants. On the brand’s website on 22 August 2026, leather styles carried MRPs of ₹4,799 to ₹6,299 and sold for ₹1,900 to ₹2,600. The ownership is what most people get wrong: this is the Ghadi detergent family’s shoe brand, and it is not Red Tape.
Red Chief belongs to the Gyanchandani family of Kanpur, the family behind Ghadi detergent, whose promoters have put about ₹157 crore into the shoe business. The shoes are genuinely made in India by the company that sells them. But the business is shrinking: ₹242.56 crore of revenue in FY2025 against a net loss of ₹29.17 crore. Buy the product, not the growth story.

How it started
Four founding years circulate for this brand, and all four are true about different things. RSPL began in 1988 as Rohit Surfactants, a Kanpur detergent maker started by the late Dayal Das and his sons Murli Dhar and Bimal Kumar. Shoes came later.
- RSPL, 1988Rohit Surfactants founded in Kanpur — detergent, not shoes
- Leather, 1995The group enters leather and footwear, on its own account
- Red Chief, 1997The brand launches for the Indian market
- Leayan Global, 2009Incorporated 22 October; owns and makes the brand today
A page that says Red Chief was founded in 1995 has confused the group’s entry into leather with the brand.
Whose money built it
Leayan Global’s registered office on Kalpi Road is the same address RSPL Limited gives as its head office. The shoe company’s two founding directors, appointed on 22 October 2009, are Murlidhar and Bimal Kumar Gyanchandani — the two sons named on RSPL’s own About Us page. CRISIL recorded in October 2022 that the promoters had provided about ₹157 crore of financial support to Leayan Global, and treated group backing as a rating strength. Detergent pays for the shoes.
Leayan Global’s site calls RSPL Limited its parent company, but CRISIL’s rationale on RSPL names a single consolidated subsidiary, and it sits in health, not footwear. Sister company under common family ownership is the safer reading, so read the parent-company line as the company’s own.
Red Chief is not Red Tape
These are two separate companies and the confusion never stops. Both sell leather shoes out of the Kanpur belt and both start with “Red”. Nothing else connects them.

What they actually make
The manufacturing claim here is unusually strong and it is checkable. The Legal Metrology block on Red Chief’s own product pages names the manufacturer and packer as “Leayan Global Pvt. Ltd., P. No.119-121, Block P&T, Kalpi Road, Fazalganj, Kanpur 208012”, with country of origin “Made in India”. The company selling the shoe is the company declaring it made the shoe. The MCA registry agrees from another direction: the activity code is NIC 1911, tanning and dressing of leather.
Leayan Global says it runs seven footwear units across North India, three of them export-dedicated, plus its own tannery of 100,000 sq ft. Those are the company’s figures. Its former COO added in 2021 that a share of output comes from vendors in Agra, so in-house is not the whole of it.
The export side is the part nobody writes about. The company’s B2B site states that it produces for Zara, H&M, Lee Cooper, Tesco, Kickers and Sainsbury’s. Red Chief, on its own account, is the domestic label of a contract manufacturer for the Western high street. Compare that with Mochi, whose owner Metro Brands runs no factory at all and earns roughly ten times the revenue.
What Red Chief costs in India
The leather line, where the discount never ends
Every price below was read from the brand’s own storefront on 22 August 2026. MRPs cluster between ₹4,799 and ₹6,299, the prices actually charged cluster between ₹1,900 and ₹2,600, and the markdown holds at 58% to 60% across style after style.
| Style | MRP | Selling price |
|---|---|---|
| Brown Casual Boot RC3841 | ₹6,299 | ₹2,582 (59% off) |
| Brown Leather Formal RC3970 | ₹6,199 | ₹2,603 (58% off) |
| Leather Formal RC4089 | ₹5,999 | ₹2,399 (60% off) |
| Chelsea Boot RC3498 | ₹5,849 | ₹2,339 (60% off) |
| Leather Formal RC4097 | ₹5,099 | ₹2,039 (60% off) |
| Brown Leather Formal RC4098 | ₹4,799 | ₹1,919 (60% off) |

A ₹5,999 MRP that sells for ₹2,399 on an ordinary Saturday is not a discount. It is the price.
The sports line is priced honestly
Red Chief Sports, launched in August 2025, sells at MRP with no inflated compare-at price at all: walking shoes W7026 at ₹1,075, running shoes R1776 at ₹1,895, sneakers W7022 at ₹2,395, all at list. One catalogue therefore runs two pricing philosophies — an old leather line with an MRP nobody pays, and a newer sports line with a price that means something. No regulator has acted against the company over either, and we are not suggesting one has.
Who Red Chief is actually for
This brand serves the 25 to 40 year old working professional who wants a real leather formal or a tan boot for about ₹2,500 and does not mind whose logo is on it. At that price, from a maker with its own tannery, the leather content is a real argument. The company says Gen Z is only about 10% of sales.
Skip it if you want cushioned running shoes or a sneaker with resale value: the sports line is new and undifferentiated, and Campus owns that ground at similar money. Relaxo’s Sparx sits below on price, Nike and Adidas sit above, and that squeeze is exactly what the accounts show. Red Chief’s catalogue page shows what the leather range covers.
Reputation and controversies
The reputation problem here is not scandal. It is arithmetic. Revenue peaked at ₹352 crore in FY2023 and has fallen in both years since, while losses of roughly ₹29 crore have now repeated twice.
- FY2023₹352 crore — the peak
- FY2024₹287.37 crore, net loss ₹28.75 crore
- FY2025₹242.56 crore, net loss ₹29.17 crore
Down about 31% from the peak in two years.
FY2023 from CRISIL, December 2024; FY2024 and FY2025 from filings reported by Open, 24 April 2026.
CRISIL downgraded Leayan Global to BBB/Stable on 2 December 2024. RSPL Limited, the detergent company, is rated AA/Stable, five notches higher. Ignore the ₹324 crore revenue figure still repeated in most write-ups: it is undated and describes a company that no longer exists at that size.
On 15 December 2025 the Delhi High Court dismissed Leayan Global’s appeal in Bata’s trademark suit. The court held that POWER is distinctive for footwear and left the injunction standing, restraining the company from using POWER or POWER FLEX on footwear, clothing and accessories, while allowing the tagline “The Power of Real Leather” as advertising copy. A separate 2019 rebuke in the same litigation, over “defendant masking”, was aimed at Bata for naming a small retailer as first defendant and the manufacturer second. It is not a finding against Red Chief.
Kanpur’s tannery cluster has a long documented regulatory history, and Leayan Global’s name does not appear anywhere in it. Treat that clean record as nothing found rather than nothing there.
Buying it in India
Distribution is what matters for authenticity here. Red Chief runs about 182 exclusive stores, per CRISIL’s December 2024 rating, while the group’s site claims over 5,000 multi-brand outlets. Roughly twenty unowned counters for every owned one is structurally high exposure, though we found no seizure or enforcement report involving fake Red Chief goods.
Start with the owned channels
The brand’s own website, its exclusive stores, and official storefronts on Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Ajio and Tata Cliq. Cash on delivery stops above ₹6,000 and returns run 10 days.
Read the statutory block on the box
A genuine pair declares Leayan Global Pvt. Ltd., Kalpi Road, Fazalganj, Kanpur 208012 as manufacturer and packer, with “Made in India”, one pair as net quantity, and an MRP inclusive of taxes. This is the one authenticity check backed by law.
There is no code to scan
Red Chief publishes no hologram, QR code, serial number or verification portal, and none is documented anywhere. Anyone selling you a verification method for this brand has invented it, and the listicles offering stitching tells cite nothing.
Know the real price floor
Leather styles transact at ₹1,900 to ₹2,600 on the brand’s own site, checked 22 August 2026. A genuine-leather Red Chief at ₹899 in a multi-brand shop is not a clearance find. Ask for a GST bill naming the style code.
Common questions
Is Red Chief an Indian brand?
Yes, completely. It launched in Kanpur in 1997, and the Legal Metrology declaration on its product pages names Leayan Global Pvt. Ltd., Kanpur, as manufacturer and packer, with origin “Made in India”. The English name and the western styling are the only reason anyone thinks otherwise.
Is Red Chief the same as Red Tape?
No. Red Chief belongs to Leayan Global Private Limited, a private Kanpur company owned by the Gyanchandani family. Red Tape belongs to Redtape Limited, a listed Noida company from the Mirza family, demerged from Mirza International in 2023. They share a leather belt and a word.
Who owns Red Chief?
Leayan Global Private Limited, owned by the Gyanchandani family of Kanpur, who also own RSPL, the maker of Ghadi detergent. The two share a head office address and two founding directors. Whether Leayan is a subsidiary or a sister company is disputed between its website and its rating agency.
Are Red Chief shoes real leather?
The leather line is sold as genuine leather, and the company runs its own tannery in Kanpur, which it says covers 100,000 sq ft. Its registry classification is tanning and dressing of leather. The sports line launched in 2025 is a synthetic sneaker range, priced accordingly.
Why is Red Chief always 60% off?
Because the MRP is a marketing device rather than a price. Across eleven leather styles checked on 22 August 2026, the markdown held between 58% and 60%, which reads as a fixed formula rather than a sale. The newer sports line carries no such markup.

At ₹2,399 for a genuine-leather formal declared as made by the company that sells it, in its own Kanpur plants, from its own tannery, Red Chief is honest value. Very little else in Indian mid-market footwear is vertically integrated to that degree, and the Legal Metrology block proves it rather than asserting it.
The company around the product is another matter. Revenue has fallen 31% from a ₹352 crore peak to ₹242.56 crore in FY2025, losses of about ₹29 crore have repeated twice, and CRISIL cut the rating to BBB/Stable in December 2024 — five notches below the detergent business that funded it with ₹157 crore. A permanent 60% markdown is a brand telling you its own MRP means nothing.
A good ₹2,500 leather shoe from a brand that has not worked out what it is worth.
