How it started
Relaxo Footwears Limited was incorporated on 13 September 1984 as a private company and converted to public limited status on 31 March 1993. The business itself is older, and the family behind it — the Duas — built it out of Bahadurgarh in Haryana.
Relaxo’s original product was the Hawaii slipper, the cheapest possible footwear made at enormous volume. Sparx exists because that business eventually needed a way to sell something other than slippers.
A company known for ₹100 rubber chappals cannot easily charge ₹1,200 for a sports shoe under the same name. So it built a second brand with a harder, more athletic-sounding name, and that name is now more familiar to young Indian buyers than the parent’s is.

What they actually make
Sparx covers sports shoes, running-styled trainers, sandals, floaters and sliders. The catalogue is enormous — 825 Sparx products were listed at the time of checking.
Manufacturing is entirely Indian and industrial in scale. Relaxo runs eight facilities across Bahadurgarh in Haryana, Bhiwadi in Rajasthan and Haridwar in Uttarakhand, with a ninth Rajasthan plant added by FY 2019. Capacity reached 10.5 lakh pairs a day in FY 2025, up from 50,000 pairs a day in 1995-96.
That number is the whole business model. At a million pairs a day, unit costs fall to a level no importer can match, which is why a Sparx sandal costs what it does and why no foreign brand competes at this price in India.

The shape matters more than any single price. Almost the entire range lives under ₹1,500, and exactly one product crosses ₹2,000.
There is no import duty in any of it. Relaxo manufactures in three states, so the roughly 49% that duty, cess and IGST add to imported footwear simply does not apply.
Sparx is not a brand with a premium tier; it is a brand built to sit under the price at which imports become possible.
Who Sparx is actually for
Everyday wear on a real budget — college, commuting, gym-adjacent use, and sandals for daily life. Between ₹600 and ₹1,300 the value is honest — a band it shares with Bata and the service network is wherever footwear is sold in India, which is everywhere.
Sandals and floaters are the strongest part of the range. That is what the parent company has been engineering for decades, and it shows.
Skip Sparx for real running or any sport played seriously — the shoes are styled athletically rather than engineered for it. Skip it if you want a shoe to last years; at this price the soles and uppers are consumables. And do not pay a premium for Sparx over other budget Indian brands on the assumption that it is imported, because that assumption is the only thing the name is buying you.
Reputation and controversies
Sparx has no significant documented controversy as of August 2026. No regulatory action, product recall, advertising adjudication, labour finding or pattern of consumer commission orders against Relaxo Footwears Limited or the Sparx brand could be sourced.
The fair observation is about naming rather than conduct. Sparx is a deliberately international-sounding name on a Bahadurgarh product, and the brand does not go out of its way to correct the impression. That is ordinary brand-building, not deception — but it is why so many Indians end up searching for which country Sparx is from.
