Timex is an American watch brand, owned through the Netherlands, that manufactures watches in Himachal Pradesh and sells them in India through a company listed on the BSE and NSE. It sits in the low and middle price segments. The important thing about Timex in India is structural rather than horological: unlike almost every other foreign watch brand here, it is not really an importer.
Timex is American, owned through the Netherlands, and made in India. Watches from its Baddi plant in Himachal Pradesh skip the roughly 49% duty and tax an imported watch pays. So Timex competes on Indian manufacturing economics, not on a foreign badge. This audit quotes no rupee figures, because Timex India does not publish prices that can be verified.

How it started
Timex dates itself to 1854, when the Waterbury Clock Company began making clocks in Waterbury, Connecticut. In the company’s own words the aim was “to make fine watchmaking accessible to everyone” — an unusually accurate mission statement, because accessibility rather than craft is what the brand has actually delivered for 170 years. Timex says it has made more than two billion watches and runs 27 facilities worldwide.
The Indian chapter starts much later and matters more to an Indian buyer. Timex Group India Limited was incorporated on 4 October 1988 and began business on 5 January 1989. It traded as Timex Watches Limited until 15 October 2007, when it took its present name.
In between came the episode that shaped the Indian watch market. From 1992 Timex ran a joint venture with Titan, and by Titan’s own account the partnership worked well enough that Timex became second only to Titan in popularity in India. The venture was dissolved in 1998 — and Titan responded by launching Sonata to reclaim the budget share the partnership had held.

The Indian company has traded since 1989, and it manufactures here rather than importing.
What they actually make
In India, Timex Group’s business is broader than the Timex name. The group distributes Timex alongside Nautica, Guess, GC, Salvatore Ferragamo, Versace, Ted Baker, Missoni, Furla, adidas, Philipp Plein and Plein Sport — a portfolio of licensed fashion watch brands sold through the same organisation.
That matters for a buyer, because several watches that look like they come from a fashion house are made and supported by the same company that makes a budget Timex. The name on the dial is a licence; the watch behind it is Timex Group’s.
The Indian entity is registered to manufacture and trade watches and to provide after-sales service, and it runs a plant at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh. That single fact separates Timex from most foreign watch brands in India, and the pricing section explains why.
What Timex costs in India
A caution first, and an unusual one for this section: Timex’s India site does not expose prices in a form that can be independently verified, so this audit does not quote specific rupee figures rather than repeat marketplace listings that may be grey market. The company describes its own positioning as the low and middle price segments.
What can be established is the structure behind the price, which is more durable than any individual number.
An imported wristwatch entering India pays roughly 49% in basic customs duty, cess, social welfare surcharge and IGST before any importer or retailer margin. That single fact is why Seiko and Tissot start where they do in India, and why Titan has been able to hold about 55% of the market below ₹25,000.
Timex is on the other side of that wall. Because Timex Group India manufactures at Baddi, watches made there are not imports, and the duty stack does not apply to them.
The ownership chain behind that Indian plant is worth seeing laid out, because “who owns Timex” is one of the most confidently answered and most frequently wrong questions about the brand.
- Baddi plant, Himachal PradeshWhere the watches sold in India are manufactured
- Timex Group India LimitedThe Indian company, listed on the NSE and BSE
- Timex Group Luxury Watches B.V.The parent company, registered in the Netherlands
- BP Horological Group L.L.C.Ultimate holding company; family controlled, not a listed conglomerate
The chain runs from the Baddi plant up to the family-controlled holding company that ultimately owns the brand.
Who Timex is actually for
Timex suits the buyer who wants a plain, legible, reliable watch and does not want to pay a duty premium for a foreign name. Its strength has always been the honest end of the market: simple analog dials, dependable quartz movements, and designs that do not pretend to be more than they are. For a first office watch or an everyday second watch, that is a sensible proposition.
The licensed fashion brands are a different purchase. Buying a Guess or a Ted Baker watch is buying a design and a name; the engineering and the service behind it are Timex Group’s, which is worth knowing before paying a fashion premium for it.
Skip Timex if you want mechanical watchmaking, materials like sapphire crystal as standard, or resale value — none of those are what this brand does. And be careful assuming a Timex is automatically cheaper than an Indian brand; Titan and Sonata are made inside the same duty-free position and have a far larger service network.
Structurally, Timex is closer to Titan than it is to Casio or Fossil.
Reputation and controversies
Timex has no major documented controversy in India as of August 2026. No regulatory action, product recall, advertising adjudication, labour finding or pattern of consumer commission orders against the brand or Timex Group India could be sourced.
There is, however, a piece of misinformation worth correcting, because it circulates in company profiles to this day. Several financial data sites still describe Timex India as distributing through “Titan’s marketing network of over 4,300 outlets”. That describes the 1992 to 1998 joint venture, which was dissolved more than twenty-five years ago. Timex has run its own Indian distribution since. If you read a company profile that says otherwise, it has not been updated since the last century.
Buying it in India
Buy through an authorised channel
Use Timex’s official India channels and authorised multi-brand watch retailers. On marketplaces you are buying from a seller rather than the platform, so confirm that seller is authorised.
Know where the fakes actually sit
Counterfeit risk on core Timex models is moderate and lower than for G-Shock, because the designs are plainer and the margins on faking a budget analog watch are thin. It rises sharply on Guess, Versace and Philipp Plein branded watches, where the name carries a premium worth counterfeiting.
Inspect the case back, the card and the second hand
Look at the case back engraving and the warranty card, then watch the movement’s second-hand sweep. Those three together catch most copies of a plain analog watch.
Treat a steep discount as a warning
A sharp price cut from an unknown seller means a “first copy”, the common Indian term for a counterfeit. This matters most on the licensed fashion brands, which are copied far more often than Timex’s own range.
Do not bother buying it abroad
Watches made at Baddi are already inside India’s duty wall, so the overseas arbitrage that works for Swiss and Japanese brands does not apply here.
Common questions
Who owns Timex?
Timex Group Luxury Watches B.V. of the Netherlands, with BP Horological Group L.L.C. as the ultimate holding company. In India it operates through Timex Group India Limited, a separate company listed on the NSE and BSE. It is family controlled rather than part of a listed watch conglomerate.
Are Timex watches made in India?
Many sold here are. Timex Group India Limited manufactures at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh, and its registered activity is the manufacture and trading of watches plus after-sales service. That places it inside India’s duty wall, unlike most imported watch brands.
Is Timex related to Titan or Sonata?
Not now, but historically yes. Titan and Timex ran a joint venture from 1992 that was dissolved in 1998, after which Titan launched Sonata to reclaim the budget share the partnership had held. The two have been separate competitors ever since.
Is Timex a good watch brand?
For plain, dependable quartz watches at accessible prices, yes. It does not offer mechanical watchmaking, premium materials as standard, or resale value. Judge it against Titan and Sonata, which share its Indian manufacturing position, rather than against Swiss brands.
Does Timex make Guess and Versace watches?
Timex Group distributes Timex alongside Nautica, Guess, GC, Salvatore Ferragamo, Versace, Ted Baker, Missoni, Furla, adidas, Philipp Plein and Plein Sport. Those are licensed fashion brands — the name on the dial is licensed, and the watch and its service come from Timex Group.
