Away Brand Audit: The US Luggage Brand That Does Not Ship to India

Who owns Away, why it has no Indian seller or price, where its suitcases are made, what the Carry-On costs in the US and what its warranty covers for Indian buyers.
Away brand audit by FashionAudit: Away logo over a matte carry-on suitcase with a passport

Away is an American luggage brand, founded in 2015 by Jen Rubio and Steph Korey and best known for its polycarbonate carry-on. Its own terms of use name the company behind it as JRSK, Inc., a private company based at 82 Mercer Street in New York.

For an Indian buyer the most important fact about Away is a short one. On 22 September 2026 its FAQ said, “We currently ship to the US, UK and CA.” It has no Indian website, no Indian store and no Indian partner named in anything read, and Myntra carried no Away listing at all.

The short answer

Away is run by JRSK, Inc., a privately held New York company whose last disclosed round, in May 2019, valued it at US$1.4 billion. It ships only to the US, the UK and Canada, and all 16 of its stores are in those three countries. Its warranty covers only bags bought from Away or an authorised reseller, and Away publishes no list of resellers. The Carry-On costs US$275 in the US before sales tax. Any Away bag sold in India comes from a seller the brand does not list.

Who owns Away

The owner is named in Away’s own paperwork. Its terms of use, last updated on 12 September 2025, are an agreement with “JRSK, Inc. (d/b/a Away) and its affiliates and subsidiaries” at 82 Mercer Street in New York, under the law of the State of New York. No stock-exchange listing, ticker or securities filing for JRSK was found, and the company publishes no annual report, so there are no audited accounts to quote.

What is on the record is the funding. A press release dated 14 May 2019 announced a US$100 million Series D at a valuation of US$1.4 billion, led by Wellington Management, with Baillie Gifford, Lone Pine Capital and Global Founders Capital also named. The release put “total equity funding to date” at US$156 million. Gunderson Dettmer, the law firm on the deal, confirmed the amount, lead investor and valuation the next day, and gave the purpose as to “expand Away’s product line, grow its physical retail footprint and expand internationally”.

Those were minority investments. No document read shows any investor controlling JRSK, and no later funding round, debt deal or recapitalisation was read from a primary source.

  3. February 2023Bloomberg reports Away exploring options, including a sale
  4. June 2025Jessica Schinazi named chief executive; Rubio executive chair

The chain records reported events in order; nothing read shows that a sale or change of control followed the 2023 report.

That 2023 report is the one loose thread. Bloomberg’s headline on 13 February 2023 read “Luggage Brand Away Is Exploring Options, Including a Sale”. Crain’s New York Business wrote that JRSK “is working with an adviser to solicit interest from potential buyers”, and Retail Dive, the next day, noted that “the company could ultimately decide against a sale”. Nothing read between 2023 and September 2026 shows a sale, a recapitalisation or a change of control, and nothing shows the process formally ended either.

Management has changed since. Retail Dive reported in February 2024 that Away cut 25% of its internal staff, including “the elimination of a traditional executive team structure”. In June 2025 it reported that Jessica Schinazi had been named CEO, with Rubio moving to executive chair, and that Away had launched on Amazon and at Nordstrom in 2025.

What Away has said about its sales

Away’s revenue figures all come from Away, and the newest is years old. The 2019 funding release said the company made “$12 million in sales in its first 12 months” and “$150 million in sales in 2018”, and that it expected to “double its sales in 2019”. That last line was a forecast, not a result, and no later figure was found from a named, checkable source.

Since then there have been growth claims without totals. Retail Dive reported in 2023 that holiday 2022 sales were “almost double that of 2021 and 60% above 2019 levels”, and in 2025 that bag offerings grew 16% year-over-year in 2024. Neither gives a sales figure, and estimates from data aggregators were left out.

How Away reaches India

It does not, on its own terms. Away’s FAQ answers “Where does Away ship to?” with “We currently ship to the US, UK and CA”, and the terms of use say the same. The store page lists 16 shops: Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, two in Los Angeles, London, Nashville, two in New York, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Toronto and Washington DC. None is in India or anywhere in Asia.

There is no Indian website, so there are no Indian terms, grievance officer or “sold by” line to read. A search of a companies register mirror found no Indian company linked to JRSK or Away and no foreign-subsidiary company carrying the name; searches for “Away Travel” turned up only Indian travel and tour firms with no luggage business. No Indian retail group was found naming Away in a filing or release. A distributor trading under an unrelated name would not show up in a name search, so this is a finding from the searches run, not proof across the whole register.

Away has, however, protected its name here. On the QuickCompany mirror of the Indian trade-mark register, marks reading “Away” stand in the name of JRSK at the same Mercer Street address as the terms of use, and the mirror records no registered user.

QuickCompany, a register mirror, read 22 September 2026. “Protection Granted” is the mirror’s wording for an international designation.

Owning a trade mark in India is not the same as selling in India, and none of these records says Away trades here.

Away on Myntra

Myntra carried no Away brand listing on 22 September 2026. A search for “away” offered no Away brand filter. The same reading of Columbia, used as the control that day, showed 2,425 listings, so the site was answering normally.

That leaves no marketplace price, seller of record or country-of-origin declaration to report. The 2025 Amazon launch reported in the US press does not extend to Amazon.in in any document read.

Where Away is made

The product pages do not say. The Carry-On and Bigger Carry-On pages read on 22 September 2026 gave dimensions, weight, materials and warranty text, so the reads reached the specification block, but neither stated a country of origin. As a private company, Away files no report listing its factories or their countries.

The only statement found is from a co-founder, in an interview with The Hustle on a page dated 1 October 2024 but recorded during Steph Korey’s earlier tenure: “The first prototype came from the same manufacturer we work with today, they’re based in China and probably the single most important partner to our business.” She added that “nearly all hard sided luggage is made in Asia”. That is a dated founder’s account, not a current statement of where every Away bag is made.

What Away costs, and what India would add

There is no Indian price to compare, because Away has no Indian site or MRP. The table below gives Away’s US prices as read, with codes where the product data gave them. The US prices exclude sales tax: the product data marks the Carry-On as taxable and the page does not say tax is included.

awaytravel.com product pages, collection page and product data, read 22 September 2026. No Indian listing existed to match by code; no currency conversion is printed.

Without an Indian selling price, this site sets no price tier for Away. The empty tier is itself the finding: the brand does not sell here and tells Indian buyers nothing about what its bags should cost.

Anyone bringing one in should know two tax facts. Suitcases fall under heading 4202, which carries 18% integrated GST under Notification No. 9/2025-Integrated Tax (Rate) of 17 September 2025. For goods imported for personal use, the Budget 2026-27 cut the duty to 10% from 1 April 2026. No basic customs duty rate was read from an official source and no exchange rate was read, so this page computes no landed cost; how a particular parcel or suitcase is assessed in practice is not established here.

For comparison, Indian hard-shell makers such as VIP Industries and Safari sell through their own Indian networks, with Indian prices and Indian after-sales addresses, which is exactly what Away does not offer.

The warranty, and why it matters more here

Away changed its luggage warranty on 14 April 2026. Bags bought before then carry the old “Limited Lifetime Warranty”, which ran “for the life of your luggage, when the Luggage is used normally” and covered cracks, broken wheels or handles, zips that do not work and fabric tears affecting pocket use. It excluded “scratches, dents, dings, scuffs, stains, color changes”, normal wear and tear, commercial or rental use and products from unauthorised resellers, and it applied only to the original purchaser with a receipt.

Bags bought since carry “Away LifetimeCare™ Coverage”. For the first five years it offers free repairs for “functional damage … due to manufacturing defects or the unpredictability of travel”, free round-trip shipping and “One luggage replacement within the first 5 years”. After five years the two Away pages read are not worded identically: the warranty page says repairs come “with a reasonable service fee”, while the LifetimeCare page says repair support “remains complimentary in Away stores” and also that “a reasonable service fee may apply after the first five years”. Read together, a service fee may apply after five years. Cosmetic wear, “Scuffs, Scratches, Dents & Stains that occur over time” and lost or stolen luggage are excluded. An optional “LifetimeCare Pro” costs US$35.00 and extends free repairs to ten years with up to two replacements. Bags and accessories get a “Limited one-year warranty”.

The catch for India is the seller condition. Away’s Authorized Reseller Policy, last updated on 25 June 2025, says: “A warranty is valid only for Products sold by Authorized Resellers. Products sold by unauthorized sellers are not eligible for warranty coverage provided by Away.” It also says resellers “are appointed at Away’s sole discretion”, but the page does not list them.

No Away page read sets a country limit in so many words. But every page describes shipping to the US, the UK and Canada only, and the claim process runs through shipping or stores in those countries. Nothing read says a claim lodged from India, or for a bag bought in India, will be honoured.

Worth knowing

A bag bought on a trip to London, New York or Toronto from Away itself keeps its warranty on paper, but repairs are organised in those countries. Keep the original receipt, because both versions of the warranty require it.

What the product claims rest on

Away’s case pages describe a “100% polycarbonate shell”. They do not name the grade or supplier of the polycarbonate, and they give no impact or drop test or standard. The Carry-On is listed at 22 x 14.4 x 9.1 inches outside, 7.5 lb and 41 litres. The Bigger Carry-On page gives 23 x 15.4 x 9.4 inches, 7.9 lb and 49 litres in its body, while the same page’s meta description says 47.9 litres.

The sustainability lines have no certifier behind them on the pages read: packaging “100% recyclable”, a laundry bag of “100% recycled polyester” and a luggage tag of “50% recycled leather”. These are the brand’s descriptions, not test results.

Checking an Away bag is authentic

Away offers buyers no verification tool. No serial lookup, QR code, hologram or verification page appeared on the pages read. That is a contrast with Tumi, which publishes an authenticity claim for its bags, TUMI Tracer. Away does not publish a list of authorised resellers on the pages we read, for India or anywhere else.

Check 01

Know the channel

Away sells directly in the US, the UK and Canada, online and through its 16 stores. No Indian seller is authorised in any document read.

Check 02

Ask for the receipt chain

The warranty needs proof of purchase from Away or an authorised reseller. A seller in India should be able to show where the bag was bought.

Check 03

Ask who handles a repair

Away’s claim process runs through shipping or stores in the US, the UK and Canada, and no page read says a claim from India will be honoured. Ask the seller, in writing, who will handle a repair.

Away’s warranty rests on an authorised-reseller list that the brand does not publish, and Away names no seller in India.

The record in India

A search of Indian Kanoon on 22 September 2026 for “JRSK”, “awaytravel” and “Away luggage” found no decided case involving the brand. The first two terms showed nothing; the third showed four matters that use the words “away luggage” in ordinary speech and have nothing to do with Away. The same search engine returned 2,164 results for “Samsonite South Asia” that day, so the search was working. Consumer commissions outside that database were not covered, so read it as nothing found under those terms.

Who Away is actually for

Away suits a traveller who lives in, or regularly visits, the US, the UK or Canada, wants a polycarbonate carry-on at US$275 before tax, and will buy it from Away directly so the warranty holds. For someone buying in India it is a harder case: there is no Indian price, no Indian seller named by the brand and no Indian repair route. An Indian brand such as Skybags or Uppercase comes with a local seller and a local address for claims.

Common questions

Who owns Away luggage?

JRSK, Inc., a private New York company, trading as Away. Its last disclosed round, a US$100 million Series D in May 2019, valued it at US$1.4 billion. No document read shows any investor controlling it, or a completed sale.

Does Away ship to India?

No. On 22 September 2026 Away’s FAQ said it ships to “the US, UK and CA”, and all 16 of its stores are in those three countries.

Is Away sold on Myntra?

No. A search on 22 September 2026 showed no Away brand listing on Myntra.

Does the Away warranty work in India?

Away’s warranty covers only bags sold by Away or an authorised reseller, and Away names no Indian seller. No page read says a claim from India will be honoured.

Where are Away suitcases made?

The product pages read do not state a country of origin. A co-founder told The Hustle that Away’s first prototype came from a manufacturer in China that it still worked with at the time.

The FA take

Away is easy to identify and hard to buy from India. Its terms name the company, its FAQ names the three countries it ships to, and its warranty is written out in detail, including the April 2026 change to five years of free repairs. For a traveller who can buy from Away in the US, the UK or Canada, the paperwork is clear.

The scepticism is about what reaches India. Away has no Indian seller, price or repair route, its warranty depends on an authorised-reseller list it does not publish, and its product pages name no polycarbonate grade, impact test, certifier or country of origin. The last sales figure the company published is for 2018.

A well-documented US$275 carry-on, worth buying only from Away itself, in a country it ships to.
