Birkenstock is a sandal maker whose parent company trades on the New York Stock Exchange, and which says it produces every one of its shoes inside the European Union. In India it does not work through a local partner. It sells through a company of its own.
On 21 September 2026, all 40 Birkenstock product records read on Myntra named the same seller, Birkenstock India Private Limited, and the same country of origin, Germany. Across 100 listings the brand charged 94.4% of the price on the tag — the firmest pricing of any footwear brand read on that shelf that day.
Birkenstock reaches India through Birkenstock India Private Limited, a Delhi-registered subsidiary of a foreign company that appears on its parent’s own subsidiary table. Where rival heritage brands mostly declare Indian factories and Indian partners, every Birkenstock record read declared Germany and named the brand’s own company as seller. It rarely discounts: 94.4% of MRP charged on 100 listings, median price paid ₹8,490.

Who owns Birkenstock
The brand sits under Birkenstock Holding plc, which listed on the New York Stock Exchange with a prospectus filed on 12 October 2023. Its earlier registration statement dates the change of control to 30 April 2021, when Birkenstock Holding Limited completed what the filing calls the acquisition of “the shares and certain assets that comprised the BIRKENSTOCK Group”.
For the year to 30 September 2025 the group reported revenue of EUR 2,097.4 million and a profit of EUR 348.3 million, against EUR 1,804.7 million and EUR 191.6 million a year earlier. That annual report, filed on 18 December 2025, is still the latest: the company’s filings since then are interim notices and one prospectus supplement. The year to 30 September 2026 has not yet been reported.
The most recent figures cover nine months. To 30 June 2026 revenue was EUR 1,739.8 million and net profit EUR 242.0 million, down from EUR 254.5 million in the same nine months a year before. The third quarter alone brought EUR 720 million of revenue, up 13%, and EUR 110 million of net profit, down 15%.
The controlling holder sold down in August 2026
A filing of 16 June 2026 said the principal shareholder and its affiliates were known to own “approximately 54.1%” of the ordinary shares. The prospectus supplement of 14 August 2026 put entities affiliated with L Catterton at 55.9% before a secondary offering. Two dates, two figures, with a share buyback in between, so both are printed here.
The same supplement set out two outcomes after the sale: 44.75% if the underwriters took no extra shares, or 42.43% if they took their full option. The closing notice of 17 August 2026 records 28,146,226 shares sold by BK LC Lux MidCo S.à r.l. at US$39.35 each — 15,384,613 to the public and 12,761,613 bought back by the company — but gives no resulting percentage. No filing read since states one, so this page prints no current stake.
- April 2021Birkenstock Holding Limited acquires the group
- October 2023Birkenstock Holding plc lists in New York
- June 2026Principal shareholder at approximately 54.1%
- August 202628,146,226 shares sold; stake below half on either outcome
What the holding is today has not been published.
What can be said is narrow and firm: on both outcomes the prospectus described, the L Catterton-affiliated holding fell below half. Whether that changes anything at the company is not a question any filing read answers, so this page does not attempt it.
Who sells Birkenstock in India
Across the heritage footwear brands this site audited in September 2026, four routes into India appear, and the useful question is which document tells you the route. For Clarks and FILA, a listed Indian company, Metro Brands, names the brand in its own filings. For Hush Puppies, Bata India does. For some others, only the brand’s Indian website names the operator. Birkenstock is on a third route: its own subsidiary.
The company is Birkenstock India Private Limited, incorporated on 11 September 2019. The letters FTC inside its identity number are the companies register’s own marker for a subsidiary of a foreign company, and the parent confirms it. The subsidiary table in the annual report for the year to 30 September 2025 lists “Birkenstock India Private Ltd.” against India, as the 2023 listing documents did.
The register carries a history of moves. The company began with a Delhi number, moved to Haryana, and now holds a third number back in Delhi, U25209DL2019FTC458393 — one company, three identity numbers, because the number changes with the state. Register mirrors give ₹5 crore of authorised capital, ₹2.7 crore paid up, no charges registered and a last balance sheet dated 31 March 2025.
| Field | What the register mirrors carry |
|---|---|
| Current CIN | U25209DL2019FTC458393, Delhi |
| Earlier CINs | U25209DL2019FTC354967, Delhi; then U25209HR2019FTC096175, Haryana |
| Registered office, current number | Pacific Mall, Sarita Vihar, Mathura Road, New Delhi 110044 |
| Registered office, Haryana number | Capital Towers 1, Sector-26, Gurugram, Haryana 122002 |
| Holding company named | “Birkenstock International Mea” |
| Activity | Registered as “Manufacture of rubber and plastic products”; one aggregator labels it wholesale trading |
| Directors | Oliver Christian Joachim Reichert and Vinay Bansal from 11 September 2019; Alexander Nicolaus Hellmut Ulrich Hoff from 31 March 2022; Klaus Peter Baumann from 5 December 2024 |
One register aggregator gives revenue of ₹226.88 crore for the year to 31 March 2025, and 31% growth. That is a single aggregator’s figure, with no profit beside it, and no second source carries it. It fits an operating seller, not a buying office, and so do the stores: the group’s own release of 26 April 2024 announced the first Indian flagship on Linking Road, Mumbai, and named Vinay Bansal as managing director of Birkenstock India.
The chain on the declaration
- Birkenstock’s German companiesNamed as manufacturer on 39 of 40 records
- Birkenstock India Private LimitedImporter on the brand’s Indian compliance page
- A Myntra listing, 21 September 2026Seller of record on 40 of 40, Germany on 40 of 40
On 39 of the 40 records, maker and seller both carry the Birkenstock name, which is rarer on an Indian shelf than it sounds.
Who runs birkenstock.in — two answers
The brand’s Indian website gives two. Its terms of use, read on 21 September 2026, say the site is operated by Birkenstock India Private Limited, with a registered office at Capital Towers-1, Sector-26, Gurgaon, and courts in New Delhi. Its FAQ, read the same day, says: “You are shopping on the official Birkenstock India store, operated by Birkenstock Digital GmbH.” The footer reads “© 2026 BIRKENSTOCK DIGITAL GMBH”.
The address differs too. The site gives the Gurugram office; the register mirrors give Pacific Mall, New Delhi, for the current number, and the Gurugram office for the earlier Haryana one. This page prints both and picks neither. Before a large order online, read the terms page, which names the Indian company as the party.
What Birkenstock costs in India
Myntra’s Birkenstock brand listing held 336 products on 21 September 2026. A sounding of 100 distinct listings gave a median MRP of ₹8,990 and a median price actually paid of ₹8,490 — 94.4% of MRP in aggregate. Sandals made up 62 of the 100 and flats 31.
Only 24 of the 100 were reduced, on three discount rungs of 30%, 40% and 50%, across 21 distinct MRPs. Most listings carry the tag price and nothing else, so a buyer waiting for a general sale is waiting for something this shelf rarely offers.
Set against the other heritage footwear brands read on Myntra the same day, Birkenstock sits at the top of the table, and it is the only one whose records all declare a foreign origin.
| Brand | Main seller of record, of 40 | Declared origin, of 40 | Median paid | Share of MRP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Birkenstock | Birkenstock India Private Limited, 40 | Germany, 40 | ₹8,490 | 94.4% |
| Clarks | Metro Brands, 35 | India, 37 | ₹5,499 | 88.0% |
| Hush Puppies | Bata India Limited, 23 | India, 39 | ₹2,799 | 71.8% |
| ALDO | Apparel Group companies, 33 | India, 31 | ₹10,490 | 69.9% |
| FILA | Metro Brands, 34, plus Metro Athleisure, 1 | India, 40 | ₹3,872 | 64.5% |
Myntra, 21 September 2026: 100 listings per brand for price, 40 product records per brand for seller and origin.
Clarks, the closest on price, reduced 8 of its 100 listings and is sold mainly by Metro Brands, a single named partner; the brands sold by several sellers discount harder. Five brands on one day is an observation, not a rule, and nothing here shows that the selling arrangement causes the price.
Four foreign names on that shelf declared India on most of their records; the one that declared Germany on all forty held the highest share of its tag.
What the same sandal costs in America, and why no gap is printed
Birkenstock’s American shop, read on 21 September 2026, listed the Arizona in taupe suede, item 0051461, at US$139.95, and the Arizona in black Birko-Flor, item 0051791, at US$117.95, both at full price. The Boston in mauve suede, item 1030626, was listed at US$154.95 and shown reduced to US$100.72 — a markdown, not a comparable price.
The pages do not say whether sales tax is included. The Indian price of those two item numbers was not taken, and no exchange rate is fixed here, so no comparison appears. That is a gap in this page, not a statement that the same sandal is missing from Indian shops.
One thing is certain about the Indian price. Every pair on those 40 records declared a German origin, so each crossed a customs border. The landed value that import duty is charged on is not published, so no duty sum appears here either.
Where Birkenstock is made
The parent is unusually specific. Its filing of 16 June 2026 says: “We operate six manufacturing facilities in Germany and one component manufacturing facility in Portugal.” It owns the St. Katharinen, Görlitz, Bernstadt and Pasewalk plants and the Portuguese component plant, and states: “We engineer and produce 100% of our footwear within the European Union.”
The 2023 prospectus put it at five owned German factories, assembling over 95% of products and making all footbeds, with component work in Portugal. Five then and six now are different dates, not a conflict. Raw materials come “mainly” from Europe, with cork predominantly from Portugal. No contract manufacturer is described anywhere.
The Indian paperwork matches the filings. The brand’s Indian compliance page names Birkenstock Productions Sachsen GmbH, of Görlitz, as manufacturer and packer, Birkenstock India Pvt. Ltd. as importer, and “Germany and Portugal” as country of origin. On Myntra, all 40 records read declared Germany.
The 40 declarations, as read
The manufacturer line was blank on none of the 40. Three German companies carrying the Birkenstock name account for 39: Birkenstock Productions Sachsen GmbH on 14, Birkenstock GmbH & Co. KG Services on 14, and Birkenstock Digital GmbH on 11. Net quantity was left blank on 34 of the 40.
The contrast with the rest of the shelf is the point of this audit. On the same day, Clarks declared India on 37 of 40 records, FILA on 40 of 40, Hush Puppies on 39 of 40 and ALDO on 31 of 40, made by named Indian factories and sold by Indian partners such as Bata India. Birkenstock is the opposite case on every count.
What the footbed claims stand on
Birkenstock sells a footbed more than a shoe, so its claims were read on its Indian footbed page and American product pages on 21 September 2026, looking for a number, a named standard and a named test house.
| Claim, as worded | Number published | Standard named | Test house named |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contoured cork-latex footbed “creates custom support with wear” | No | No | No |
| Five layers: jute, cork-latex bed, second jute, suede cover, foam insert | A layer list only | No | No |
| “The natural materials have a heat and cold-insulating effect and ensure a good foot climate” | No | No | No |
| Birko-Flor upper: “skin-friendly, tear-resistant and easy-to-care-for” | No | No | No |
These are descriptions, and the pages publish no figure, standard or laboratory behind them. No medical or orthopaedic claim appears on the Indian footbed page, which is to the brand’s credit on a product so often sold on comfort. The suede is described as “a split leather with a napped finish”; the pages read give no tanning method and no certification.
For readers weighing a moulded sandal against a moulded clog, our Crocs audit runs the same test on a very different material.
Buying a genuine pair in India
Birkenstock’s Indian FAQ puts the burden on where you buy: “We guarantee the authenticity of Birkenstock products only when purchased from the brand authorized retailers.” It asks shoppers to use “our official website (www.birkenstock.in) or an approved marketplace site”.
Read the seller name
On all 40 Myntra records read on 21 September 2026 the seller of record was Birkenstock India Private Limited. A listing naming anyone else departs from every record read that day.
Turn the box over
The declaration carries MRP inclusive of taxes, origin and manufacturer. The brand’s own records name Germany and a Birkenstock company; the footbed itself carries a “Made in Germany” stamp on the pages read.
Treat a deep cut with care
Only 24 of 100 listings were reduced, and the deepest rung was 50%. A price far below that floor, from an unfamiliar seller, is a reason to ask questions before paying.
The figure of about 50 Indian outlets comes from a trade report of August 2025, not a filing, and does not say which are company-run. Use the brand’s store locator and ask at the till whose shop it is.
On the legal record, no decided Indian judgment involving Birkenstock came up in the searches made for this page. Read that as nothing found rather than proof of nothing there.
Who Birkenstock is actually for
A buyer who wants a sandal made in Germany, by the brand’s own factories, sold by the brand’s own Indian company, gets exactly that — the paperwork says so at every step. The trade-off is price. At a median of ₹8,490 paid and 94.4% of MRP charged, this is not a brand to buy on sale, and the discount-driven shelf around it offers no guide to what Birkenstock will do.
Anyone shopping mainly on comfort claims should know those claims are descriptions without published numbers. Anyone comparing it with Onitsuka Tiger, the ASICS-owned label, will find nothing to compare on Myntra: its brand listing there showed no products on the same day.
Common questions
Is Birkenstock a German brand?
Its shoes are made in Germany: the parent says it runs six German manufacturing facilities and produces all its footwear inside the European Union. Every Indian record read declared Germany. The parent company, Birkenstock Holding plc, is listed in New York.
Who sells Birkenstock in India?
Birkenstock India Private Limited, a subsidiary of a foreign company incorporated in 2019 and listed on the parent’s own subsidiary table. It was seller of record on all 40 Myntra records read on 21 September 2026. Those records name no other seller.
Is any Birkenstock sold in India made in India?
None of the 40 records read on 21 September 2026 declared India. All 40 declared Germany, and the brand’s Indian compliance page gives “Germany and Portugal”. That sets it apart from Clarks, FILA, Hush Puppies and ALDO, which mostly declared India the same day.
Does Birkenstock go on sale in India?
Rarely, on the reading taken. Of 100 Myntra listings on 21 September 2026, 24 were reduced, and the brand took 94.4% of MRP overall — the highest of the heritage footwear brands read that day.
What do the filings say about L Catterton’s Birkenstock stake?
The prospectus supplement of 14 August 2026 put L Catterton-affiliated entities at 55.9% before that month’s share sale, and at 44.75% or 42.43% afterwards depending on the underwriters’ option. The closing notice of 17 August 2026 gives no resulting percentage, and holdings can change, so check the latest filing.

Birkenstock in India is what it says it is. The parent names its Indian company in its own filing, the register marks that company as a foreign company’s subsidiary, and all 40 records read named Germany as origin and Birkenstock India as seller. On a shelf where Clarks, FILA, Hush Puppies and ALDO are mostly made here by Indian factories, that is the plainest chain of responsibility you will find.
Two things to weigh are the comfort claims and the price. The footbed pages describe materials and layers without publishing a figure, standard or laboratory, and at 94.4% of MRP a buyer pays close to the full tag, and this page has no matched Indian price to set against the American one.
Buy Birkenstock here for a German-made sandal with a traceable seller, and expect to pay close to the tag, about ₹8,490 at the median on 21 September 2026.
