Steve Madden Brand Audit: NASDAQ Owner, Mostly China-Made

Who owns Steve Madden, which company its Indian website names, what the press reports on a licence, and what its Myntra shelf held on 21 September 2026.
Steve Madden brand audit by FashionAudit: Steve Madden logo and the headline “NASDAQ Owner, Mostly China-Made” over a pair of chunky platform sandals and studded ankle boots on a mirrored stage

Steve Madden is an American footwear brand owned by Steven Madden, Ltd., a company listed on NASDAQ that files its accounts with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Its latest annual report names India once, as one of the countries its shoes are made in, and says nothing about who sells them here.

The answer to that second question comes from a different document: the terms and conditions of stevemadden.in, the brand’s Indian website. They name Reliance Brands Limited as the company behind the site. On Myntra, the Steve Madden shelf read on 21 September 2026 held sunglasses and perfumes rather than shoes.

The short answer

Steve Madden belongs to Steven Madden, Ltd. (NASDAQ: SHOO), which reported US$2,534.1 million of revenue for 2025. Its filings name no Indian partner; the terms of stevemadden.in, read on 21 September 2026, name Reliance Brands Limited, an unlisted Mumbai company, as the operator. On Myntra that day, 96 of the brand’s 98 listings were sunglasses, and 38 of the 40 records read named Safilo as maker and China as origin, so the ₹5,500 median there is an eyewear price, not a shoe price.

Who owns Steve Madden

The brand and the company share a name, and nothing read shows the brand ever changing hands. Steven Madden, Ltd. is a public company with a financial year ending on 31 December; a 2011 trade report dates its NASDAQ listing to 1993. Its headquarters, as the annual report gives them, are at 52-16 Barnett Avenue, Long Island City, New York.

The latest annual report is the Form 10-K for 2025, filed on 2 March 2026. A search of the company’s 2026 filings to 21 September found two quarterly reports since, the latest filed on 31 July.

For 2025 the company reported revenue of US$2,534.1 million, up from US$2,282.9 million in 2024. Net income attributable to the company fell to US$44.7 million, from US$169.4 million. The United States supplied about 66.2% of global sales, and the company employed about 6,300 people, some 4,200 of them outside the US.

The first half of 2026 reads differently. Revenue for the six months to 30 June was US$1,319.0 million, and net income attributable was US$99.5 million, against less than US$1 million in the same half of 2025. The second quarter alone brought US$27.7 million of profit, where the same quarter a year earlier had produced a loss of US$39.5 million.

Part of the growth is a purchase. On 6 May 2025 the company completed its acquisition of the ultimate parent of the UK-based Kurt Geiger business. When the deal was announced on 13 February 2025, the company put its enterprise value at about £289 million in cash. Kurt Geiger matters to the Indian story too, as the next section shows.

No entry comes from a Steven Madden, Ltd. filing about India.

Who sells Steve Madden in India

Indian brand partners reach the public record in different ways. Where the partner is listed, its own filing usually says so: Metro Brands, covered in our Metro Shoes audit, names Clarks and FILA, and Bata India names Hush Puppies. Steve Madden is on a different route: its Indian partner is unlisted, and the only first-hand statement of who runs the business is the brand’s own Indian website.

Start with the owner. Steven Madden, Ltd.’s 2025 annual report describes joint ventures in South Africa, the Middle East, Israel, Australia, parts of Europe, Latin America and “certain countries in Asia”. It also describes distribution arrangements across the Asia-Pacific region. It names neither India nor Reliance, and India appears in the document only as a sourcing country. The quarterly report for June 2026 does not mention India either.

The company’s 2025 subsidiary list names companies in Hong Kong and China but none in India. Such lists can leave out smaller subsidiaries, so that shows only that no Indian company is listed. It is a contrast with Nike, whose Indian subsidiary was seller of record on all 40 Myntra listings read on 20 September 2026.

What the Indian website says

The terms and conditions of stevemadden.in, read on 21 September 2026, name the operator as “Reliance Brands Limited, having registered office at 5th Floor, Court House, Lokmanya Tilak Marg, Dhobi Talao, Maharashtra, Mumbai 400002, India”. The page gives no company number and no tax number. It says nothing about a licence from Steven Madden, Ltd.

The site’s privacy policy gives the same address but calls the company “General Reliance Brands Limited”. The two pages print the name differently, and both are quoted here as they read.

That is the site’s own description of who runs it. It is not a statement of a licence, a term or an exclusive right, and no filing by either company describes the arrangement.

Reliance Brands on the register

Register mirrors carry Reliance Brands Limited under company number U51900MH2007PLC174470. The U marks it as unlisted, and the rest shows a public limited company incorporated in Maharashtra in 2007; the mirrors give 25 September 2007 as the date and the company as active. The registered office matches the one in the site’s terms.

This is a large operating business, not a small office. Tofler’s mirror carries revenue of ₹2,337.1 crore for the year to March 2025 and a net loss of ₹278.8 crore, for the whole multi-brand company rather than Steve Madden alone. On paid-up capital the mirrors disagree: ZaubaCorp carries about ₹2,130.4 crore, Tofler ₹1,805.4 crore. None of these are audited accounts read at source.

Because Reliance Brands is unlisted, it has no exchange filings to read. The retail section of Reliance Industries’ 2025-26 annual report does not name Steve Madden or Madden NYC. It does name “exclusive associations with Stella McCartney, Kurt Geiger, Max & Co. and Fabletics”, and Kurt Geiger has belonged to Steven Madden, Ltd. since May 2025. The report does not say what kind of association that is.

What the press says

Fibre2Fashion reported on 3 March 2011 that Reliance Brands had “secured an exclusive licensing deal with Steven Madden Ltd.”, quoting the then chief executive, Edward Rosenfeld: “India and its diverse consumer base is a very important and strategic market for us.” No term was reported.

A press release of 11 August 2026 announced “Madden NYC Launches in India” with Reliance Brands, sold online through stevemadden.in. It quoted executives of both companies and said Steve Madden had “35 current exclusive stores across 16 cities” in India. The release does not use the word licence. On 21 September 2026 the store locator on stevemadden.in showed “No stores available”.

Retail Insight Network wrote on 12 August 2026 that the companies had “entered an exclusive licensing agreement” that was “structured to run for 20 years”, expanding a partnership dating to 2011. It gave no source, and it is unclear whether the 20 years covers Madden NYC or the whole relationship. Treat the licence and the term as trade reporting.

What Myntra’s Steve Madden shelf actually holds

On 21 September 2026 Myntra’s Steve Madden brand filter carried 98 listings. Of the 98, 96 were sunglasses and 2 were perfumes. There were no shoes on it.

Forty product records were read for the statutory declaration, the block that names the maker, the country of origin and the seller. Thirty-eight named Safilo S.p.A. as manufacturer and declared China as the country of origin. The other two named Givaudan Fragrances Corp as manufacturer and declared the USA.

Myntra product records, read 21 September 2026. Counts are per field; the table does not pair one field with another.

The declaration names Safilo as the maker of the sunglasses.

On 21 September 2026, the Steve Madden shelf on Myntra was Safilo-made sunglasses and two perfumes, not shoes.

What Steve Madden costs in India

The Myntra numbers are real, but they are eyewear numbers. Across all 98 listings the median MRP was ₹5,500 and the median price paid was also ₹5,500: 100% of MRP. Only 2 of the 98 were reduced, both by 10%, and the shelf carried just five distinct MRPs.

That ₹5,500 is what Steve Madden sunglasses cost on Myntra. It says nothing about Steve Madden shoes in India, and this page sets no Indian price band or tier for the brand on the strength of it. No Indian footwear price was read for this audit.

On the American site, stevemadden.com, on 21 September 2026, the POSSESSION women’s sneaker in black was on sale at US$79.99 against a list price of US$99.95. The BERKLEIGH women’s knee boot was US$129.95 and the DACK men’s sneaker US$89.95, both at list. Those are American prices before sales tax.

stevemadden.com, read 21 September 2026. No Indian comparison was taken, so no gap and no currency conversion are shown.

No Indian listing for these styles was read, so there is no like-for-like comparison. That is a gap in this reading, not evidence that no matching pair is sold here.

If a pair on sale in India was imported, customs duty is charged on its landed cost; if it was made in India, it is not. The box says which.

Where Steve Madden is made

The company owns no factories. Its 2025 annual report says it uses agents and its own sourcing offices “to source our products from independently owned manufacturers in China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Mexico, Brazil, India, and various other countries”. It adds: “We have not entered into any long-term manufacturing or supply contracts.”

China made 56.1% of the company’s purchases in 2025 and Cambodia 24.6%. India is named as a sourcing country, but the report gives no share for it, so there is no way to say from the filing how much Steve Madden footwear is Indian-made.

What stands behind the claims

Steve Madden makes few product claims to test. The three American product pages read describe materials and little else: the POSSESSION page lists a “Synthetic upper material”, a “Synthetic and textile lining”, a “Textile sock” and a “Synthetic sole”.

None of the three names a comfort or sole technology, and none claims to be waterproof. No tannage or Leather Working Group statement, the leather industry’s audit scheme, appeared on them. That is a statement about three pages on one day, not about the whole range.

Fakes and how to check

Steve Madden publishes no product-level authenticity check that a buyer can use: no code, hologram, QR or serial lookup appeared on the American help centre or on the stevemadden.in pages read on 21 September 2026. Those Indian pages also carry no list of authorised Indian sellers. Columbia’s Indian site, read the same way that day, does publish one, naming its Myntra seller.

Check 01

Read the manufacturer line

On Myntra, Safilo S.p.A. means licensed sunglasses. For shoes, look for who made the pair and who imported or marketed it.

Check 02

Turn the box over

The declaration should give the MRP inclusive of taxes, the country of origin and the manufacturer or importer.

Check 03

Know who runs the Indian site

stevemadden.in names Reliance Brands Limited in its terms. Whichever seller you buy from, read its returns and warranty terms before paying.

The Indian court record

A search of Indian Kanoon for “Steven Madden” finds no judgment, and a search for “Steve Madden” finds one: CS(COMM) 691/2024, decided by Commercial Court-06, West District, Delhi, on 22 January 2026. It is a payment dispute between two Indian companies, and neither Steven Madden, Ltd. nor Reliance Brands was a party.

The brand appears only in the facts: the judgment records purchase orders from May 2021 to October 2022 for goods supplied “on behalf of the global brand ‘Steve Madden'” through an American importer. The court decreed ₹10,63,057 for the plaintiff, with 12% annual interest. It decided that dispute between those two companies as it then stood, and nobody has ruled on anything about the brand, its goods or its Indian operator.

Who Steve Madden is actually for

Steve Madden suits a buyer who wants a mainstream American fashion shoe from a company whose finances are public every quarter. The owner is clear, its sourcing countries are named, and the Indian website says plainly which company runs it.

It suits less well a buyer who wants the Indian arrangement set out in a filing. The owner’s filings do not mention an Indian partner, and the licence and its 20-year term are press reports. The Steve Madden shelf on Myntra on 21 September 2026 held sunglasses.

The FA take

The owner is easy to read. Steven Madden, Ltd. publishes its revenue, profit and sourcing countries every quarter, and its 2025 accounts show US$2,534.1 million of sales, 56.1% of purchases made in China and India on the list of sourcing countries. Its Indian website names the company behind it in plain words.

Beyond that, the Indian side rests on the operator’s own site terms and on press. No filing by either company describes the arrangement. On Myntra on 21 September 2026, 96 of 98 Steve Madden listings were sunglasses, so the ₹5,500 median there is not a shoe price.

A transparent American owner with an Indian business you know only from its own website: buy from stevemadden.in or check the box, and do not mistake the Myntra sunglasses shelf for the brand.
