Chanel is one of the least reported of the big luxury houses. It publishes results once a year as a press release — no annual report, no segment tables, no subsidiary list — and its holding company, Chanel Limited, has sat on the London register since February 1925.
India is unusual in a second way. Chanel sells perfume, makeup, skincare and eyewear here online at a rupee MRP, and sells bags only over a counter — one counter, on its own store locator.
Chanel’s group accounts to 31 December 2025 were filed in London on 29 June 2026, but the statements inside were not readable in this pass, so every figure here comes from its results release of 19 May 2026 — revenue $19,269 million, operating profit $4,712 million — not from the accounts. India is served by Chanel’s own subsidiary, which a tribunal order of 27 July 2026 calls a distributor, so there is no licensee. Fashion is boutique-only and only beauty carries an Indian MRP, so no price band is set here.

What the owner actually publishes
Chanel describes its own parent in one sentence, in the release: “Chanel Limited is a private company and parent of the Chanel group, a world leader in creating, developing, manufacturing and distributing luxury products.” The London register carries the plain facts — company number 00203669, incorporated 6 February 1925, status “Active”, 5 Barlow Place — and records the accounts: “Group of companies’ accounts made up to 31 December 2025”, filed 29 June 2026, 199 pages, behind three earlier group filings.
That filing is dated and its cover page is there; the statements inside were not readable in this pass. So no revenue, profit or geography figure here is attributed to the accounts: everything below is the results release of 19 May 2026, which covers the same year end and went out six weeks earlier.
- 31 December 2025Financial year ends
- 19 May 2026Results release: revenue $19,269 million
- 29 June 2026Group accounts filed in London, 199 pages
- 16 July 2026Last confirmation statement on the register
Every figure in this audit comes from the May release, not from the June filing.
On the release’s own numbers, 2025 was flat at the top and down at the bottom: revenue $19,269 million against $18,699 million, operating profit $4,712 million with “an increase of 5% compared to 2024”, profit after tax $2,913 million against $3,399 million, capital expenditure down from $1,755 million to $1,449 million, employees from 38,422 to 37,984. The growth wording does not settle either: the release headlines revenue “up 2% compared to 2024” while its own numbers give +3.0% reported and +1.8% at constant currency. Both are Chanel’s.
By region, 2025 revenue was Europe $6,054 million, Asia Pacific $9,182 million — down 0.8% comparable, the only region going backwards — and the Americas $4,033 million. There is no country line, so no India figure, and no category split, so nothing says what bags, watches or beauty contribute.
On who owns all this, the register points the other way. Chanel Limited’s register of persons with significant control carries an active statement, made 29 July 2016: “The company knows or has reasonable cause to believe that there is no registrable person or registrable relevant legal entity in relation to the company.” No person and no entity is registered as controlling it, Chanel’s own site and release name no shareholder, and this audit names none. The register does show a board of ten directors, on which Alain Wertheimer has sat since 26 January 2022 and the chief executive, Leena Nair, since 27 January 2022. A directorship is a register fact; a family holding is not one any filing read here establishes.
How Chanel reaches India
Through a company of its own, and the CIN says so first. CHANEL (INDIA) PRIVATE LIMITED carries CIN U46909DL2004FTC350283, and the FTC block in that number is the register’s own marker for a subsidiary of a foreign company — not the PTC an ordinary Indian private company carries. It was incorporated on 29 June 2004, has ₹46.5 crore of authorised and ₹36.81 crore of paid-up capital, and is registered with the Registrar of Companies in Delhi at Worldmark 3 in Aerocity, the address printed on chanel.com/in. Its status in the register mirrors’ own words is “Active” and “Active Foreign Private Limited Company” — mirrors, not the filings themselves. Two earlier CIN spellings exist, one of them from before the registered office moved from Maharashtra to Delhi: one company, three strings.
The clearest description of what it does comes from a tribunal, not from Chanel. An order of 27 July 2026 of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal in Delhi records that it “acts as a distributor in India for the range of products manufactured by various Chanel entities” and is “a subsidiary of Chanel International BV”, operating “pursuant to the overall strategic guidance and supervision” of its associated enterprise. That Dutch company is the only intermediate holding company named in anything read here, and there is no subsidiary list to check it against.
So there is no Indian licensee: no franchisee, no distribution partner and no joint venture appears in any document read. The company answerable to an Indian buyer is Chanel’s own.
One register figure needs tongs. A mirror reports operating revenue of ₹189.53 crore for FY 2025, up 92% on the year, while the same page says the latest filing is for the year ended 31 March 2024 and the last annual general meeting was 30 September 2024. Those statements do not sit together, so the figure appears only with that caveat. The mirrors also disagree on the board, one listing three directors and the other none, so no director is named here.
A second Indian company carries the name and is not the shop: CHANEL INDIA BUSINESS SOLUTIONS PRIVATE LIMITED, CIN U72200KA2016FTC087123, incorporated 21 March 2016 in Bengaluru under software publishing and consultancy, with ₹30 lakh of paid-up capital against the seller’s ₹36.81 crore. Its status in the register mirror’s own words is “Under Liquidation”.
On its own Indian site, read on 23 September 2026, Chanel is precise about what it will sell online. Fragrance, makeup, skincare and eyewear carry a “SHOP ONLINE” route and rupee prices; fashion and haute couture carry “Exclusively in Boutiques”; high jewellery, fine jewellery and watches carry “EXCLUSIVELY IN BOUTIQUES AND AUTHORIZED RETAILERS”, yet no list of those authorised Indian retailers is published, unlike a chain such as Tanishq, whose counters are its own. The footer names CHANEL (INDIA) PRIVATE LIMITED at the Aerocity address, and client care is an email address and a toll-free number, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. No grievance officer or nodal officer is named on the India terms page as read.
| Location, as the locator names it | Categories, in Chanel’s own words |
|---|---|
| CHANEL CHANAKYA | “Fashion, Watches & Fine Jewellery, Fragrance and Beauty, Eyewear” |
| CHANEL PROMENADE | “Fragrance and Beauty, Eyewear” |
| CHANEL CITYWALK | “Fragrance and Beauty, Eyewear” |
| CHANEL AMBIENCE | “Fragrance and Beauty, Eyewear” |
| CHANEL MALL OF INDIA | “Fragrance and Beauty, Eyewear” |
| CHANEL IGI Airport, T1 | “Fragrance and Beauty, Eyewear” |
Chanel’s India store locator, read 23 September 2026. The locator printed names and category labels, not street addresses.
All six are Delhi and the National Capital Region; the locator showed no Mumbai, Bengaluru or Hyderabad entry on the day read. Only Chanakya is labelled as carrying Fashion — a single counter in the country at which the house will sell you a handbag.
Who sells Chanel on the Indian shelf
Nobody, on the shelf that matters most. Myntra showed eight results for Chanel on 24 September 2026 and no Chanel brand facet at all — no catalogue, no listings, no handbags. The platform was answering: a control brand read in the same session, Columbia, gave a sounding of 60 listings at a median MRP of ₹3,749, the median price paid 93.3% of MRP. An absence, not a failed reading.
That matters because a listing is where an Indian buyer reads the accountability lines — seller of record, importer, country of origin. For Chanel there are none, and no list of authorised Indian sellers either. Indian bag brands like Wildcraft carry both those lines and a price.
What Chanel costs in India
There is no Chanel answer for a bag. The house does publish a bag price — just not here.
| Bag | Reference code as printed | Price, 23 September 2026 | Tax basis stated on the page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic 11.12 handbag, lambskin and gold-tone metal, chanel.com (US) | A01112-Y01295-94305 | $11,700* | Footnote reads “Suggested retail price.” No tax wording |
| Classic 11.12 handbag, chanel.com (France) | A01112-Y01295-94305 | 10 500 €* | Footnote reads “Prix de vente suggéré.” No VAT line printed |
| 2.55 handbag, aged calfskin and gold-tone metal, chanel.com (US) | A37586-Y04634-C3906 | $11,700* | “Suggested retail price.” No tax wording |
| 2.55 handbag, chanel.com (France) | A37586-Y04634-C3906 | 10 500 €* | “Prix de vente suggéré.” No VAT line printed |
| Any Chanel handbag, India | — | No price published | No statement exists |
Prices printed raw, with no conversion and no computed gap. A French retail price is inclusive of VAT under French consumer-pricing law, though the page prints no VAT line; the American page makes no tax statement.
Both bags carry the same figure in both markets on the day read, and both pages say the bag is sold only in boutiques — Chanel publishes the price of a bag it will not let you order.
The Indian price list covers a different shelf, and it is complete. On chanel.com/in on 23 September 2026, COCO MADEMOISELLE EAU DE PARFUM SPRAY 100 ml, reference 116520, was ₹16,750, worded as “MRP (inclusive of all taxes)”, the seller named as CHANEL (INDIA) PRIVATE LIMITED at the Aerocity address, the country of origin France and the manufacturer “CHANEL ZAC de Mercières 60200 Compiegne – France”. Five more references on that page ran from ₹10,250 to ₹21,000.
The only Chanel price an Indian buyer can read is on a bottle of perfume.
So no price band is set for Chanel. A band here comes from an actual Indian selling price, and for a bag none exists — not from the house, and not from a marketplace median, because there is no shelf. The empty band is the fact. Bag audits that do carry an Indian price set by the brand include our VIP Industries and Safari pages.
Where the bags are made
Chanel does not say. No page read in this pass — the American and Indian handbag category pages, both product pages priced above, the house FAQ — states a country of manufacture for a handbag, and there is no supplier list, factory count or country-share table anywhere.
What it publishes about its supply base is money and craft names. The release records “Over $700 million invested last year to acquire long-standing suppliers who provide us with the finest materials and craftsmanship”, naming no supplier, no country and no count. Its savoir-faire page names six houses with their crafts, and says: “They are part of the 11 Maisons d’art residing at le19M, a creative hub initiated by CHANEL in 2021, in Paris.”
| House, as Chanel names it | Craft, in Chanel’s words |
|---|---|
| Lesage | Embroidery and tweed; partnership dated on the page to 1983 |
| Massaro | Shoemaking; partnership dated to 1957 |
| Goossens | Jewellery and casting |
| Lemarié | Feathers and flowers; partnership dated to 1962 |
| Atelier Montex | Embroidery |
| Maison Michel | Hats |
The page words those relationships as long partnerships and does not there say Chanel owns any of them. le19M’s own site lists twelve Paris houses and names no owner either.
Against that, the one origin declaration Chanel publishes for an Indian buyer sits on a perfume box: France, manufactured at Compiègne, printed beside an MRP. The bag pages carry nothing of the kind, in any market.
Checking a bag is the real thing
Chanel offers a buyer nothing to check: no serial lookup, no code checker, no QR page, no chip-reading tool on chanel.com, and no list of authorised Indian sellers. What it publishes is policy, in its own FAQ: “CHANEL relentlessly pursues counterfeiters by initiating legal proceedings and participating extensively in awareness campaigns to inform consumers of the risks they face”, and a claim that “rigorously selecting our distribution partners” gives customers “access to authentic products”. Neither gives anyone a verdict on a specific bag.
The embedded microchip that resale and authentication businesses describe in handbags from 2021 does not change that. No Chanel page read in this pass confirms it, explains it or offers a way to read it — those accounts come from resellers and authenticators. This audit prints no tell, because a test the house does not publish is not one to rely on when paying.
The industry route is open and Chanel is not on it. The Aura Blockchain Consortium’s own site, read 23 September 2026, calls itself “the non-profit trust infrastructure for luxury – founded by LVMH, OTB Group, Prada Group and Richemont”, and lists member brands including Prada, Bvlgari, Tod’s, Loro Piana and Tiffany & Co. Chanel is named nowhere on it. The list names known positives, so the absence is a finding rather than a gap in the reading.
The record in India
Chanel’s Indian court footprint is thin, and the thinness has been tested. Searched on 23 September 2026, the courts database held seven results for the exact phrase “Chanel Ltd”, one of them about a Chanel company, and two for “Chanel (India)”. A bare search for Chanel showed 1,004 results, overwhelmingly people and businesses of that name, so nothing is claimed on that term. The control, “Louis Vuitton Malletier” the same day, showed 304: the database answers.
Three matters involving a Chanel company came out of that search and two reached a decision, both tax appeals concerning Chanel (India) Private Limited, argued on two sides. On 27 July 2026, in ITA No. 2341/DEL/2022 for assessment year 2012-13, the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal in Delhi allowed the company’s appeal and deleted a transfer-pricing adjustment of ₹3,08,28,457 in its entirety: “In the result, appeal filed by the assessee is allowed.” On 22 May 2023, in ITA No. 2723/Del/2022 for 2020-21, it dismissed the Revenue’s appeal and upheld the deletion of a ₹76,979 disallowance on a delayed provident fund deposit, finding the amount had been disallowed twice.
Read both for what they are. Each was decided on that appeal as it then stood, on the material before that bench, and each concerns one assessment year — neither reaches any other year or company. Nobody has ruled on Chanel’s Indian pricing, its stores or its declarations, and nothing here is a finding against anyone.
Two points of fairness. The same search showed no Chanel counterfeiting suit against an Indian seller — read that as nothing found under those terms. And the trade-mark register’s public search now requires a one-time-password sign-in, so it was not readable in this pass: this audit says nothing about who holds the Chanel marks in India.
Common questions
Can I buy a Chanel bag online in India?
No. Chanel’s own Indian site says fashion and haute couture are “Exclusively in Boutiques”, and the India handbags page shows no price. Of the six Indian locations on its store locator, only Chanakya in Delhi is labelled as carrying Fashion. A marketplace search on 24 September 2026 showed no Chanel shelf either.
Who sells Chanel in India?
Chanel’s own subsidiary, CHANEL (INDIA) PRIVATE LIMITED, CIN U46909DL2004FTC350283, incorporated 29 June 2004 with ₹36.81 crore of paid-up capital. A tribunal order of 27 July 2026 describes it as a distributor in India and as a subsidiary of Chanel International BV. No Indian licensee, franchisee or distribution partner is named in anything read.
What does a Chanel bag cost in India?
Chanel publishes no Indian price for a handbag. On 23 September 2026 the same two reference codes were $11,700 on its American site and 10 500 € on its French one, each footnoted as a suggested retail price. This audit prints those raw and makes no conversion.
Does Chanel say who owns it?
No filing read here names a shareholder. The London register carries an active statement, dated 29 July 2016, that the company believes there is no registrable person or registrable relevant legal entity in relation to it. Alain Wertheimer has been a serving director since 26 January 2022, which is a register fact and the whole of what filings establish.
Can Chanel tell me whether my bag is real?
No route was found. There is no serial lookup, code, QR check or certificate on chanel.com, and Chanel is not named on the Aura Blockchain Consortium’s member list. Its FAQ describes pursuing counterfeiters and selecting distribution partners, which is policy rather than a check on an individual bag. That leaves ordinary care: keep the boutique invoice, check the reference code against chanel.com, and on the beauty side match the box against the product page, which prints the MRP, the seller, the origin and the manufacturer.
Where are Chanel bags made?
Chanel does not say. No page read in this pass states a country of manufacture for a handbag, and there is no supplier list or factory count. The one origin declaration for an Indian buyer is on perfume: country of origin France, manufactured at Compiègne.

What Chanel does well here is corporate plumbing. India is served by its own subsidiary with ₹36.81 crore of paid-up capital, named in full on its own site, with no licensee between the house and the buyer — and on the beauty side that subsidiary prints what a buyer should expect: an MRP inclusive of all taxes, a seller’s address, an origin, a named manufacturer. It also puts revenue and profit in public, $19,269 million and $4,712 million, which the houses inside LVMH and Kering do not — even if that comes from a press release rather than the filing on the London register.
On bags, it publishes almost nothing an Indian buyer can use: no Indian price and no shelf to take one from, no country of manufacture on any handbag page in any market, no serial, code or certificate to check a bag against, no authorised-seller list here, no place on the industry’s digital-passport consortium. One counter in the country is labelled for Fashion, and the register’s own statement is that nobody is recorded as controlling the company behind it.
A house that sells a ₹16,750 bottle of perfume with its full declaration printed, and a bag with no Indian price, no stated origin and no check — one counter in Delhi, or bought on trust.
