Hidesign Brand Audit: Puducherry-Made Leather, Half MRP on Myntra

Hidesign, the Puducherry leather brand, makes its bags in its own Indian units. Who owns it, who sells it on Myntra, what it costs and what its warranty says.
Hidesign brand audit by FashionAudit: Hidesign logo and the headline “Puducherry-Made Leather, Half MRP on Myntra” over a brown leather messenger bag and a hand-stitched leather wallet

Hidesign is a Puducherry leather-goods brand founded by Dilip Kapur, and it is sold today by an unlisted Indian company, Hidesign India Private Limited. It makes bags, wallets and belts in its own units, and its own labels name that company as manufacturer.

On Myntra on 22 September 2026, all 40 Hidesign listings read declared India as the country of origin and named Hidesign India as maker. The median listing sold at 49.7% of its MRP, while the three bags read on the brand’s own site sold at full MRP.

The short answer

Hidesign is an Indian brand, made in India by its own company, and every Myntra declaration read said so. LVMH was reported to have bought a minority stake in 2007, put at 20% in one report and 15% in another; no later investor document says whether it is still held. Its site states warranty and return terms in several places, with the detailed policy in its FAQ.

Who owns Hidesign

The company that sells Hidesign is Hidesign India Private Limited. Its corporate identity number says what kind of company it is: U for unlisted, TN for Tamil Nadu, 2007 for the year, and PTC for an ordinary private company rather than the FTC a foreign subsidiary carries. The register mirror Zauba Corp gives an incorporation date of 22 November 2007 and paid-up capital of ₹1,02,00,000.

Dilip Kapur has been a director since incorporation. The hidesign.com footer and terms name the same company, and its contact page gives an address on Saint Martin Street, Pondicherry. The registered office on the register is in Adyar, Chennai.

The brand is much older than the company. The About page opens “The year is 1977”, when Kapur returned to India after a doctorate in international affairs, while the same page’s title reads “Handcrafting Leather Since 1978”. The trade-mark filing claims use since 1 January 1978. We print both years because the brand’s own page does.

The company’s registered activity code, the “63040” inside its CIN, is a services code. The business described on its own site, its labels and its trade-mark filing is leather goods.

The LVMH stake, 2007

In May 2007 the LVMH group announced it would acquire a stake in Hidesign, according to Indian Retailer’s year review that December, which gave no percentage. Outlook Business wrote in 2012 that LVMH “picked up 20% stake in Hidesign in 2007”. A DNA interview with Kapur, on a page dated 18 March 2018, said LVMH held “a 15% stake”. Neither report cites a filing.

Kapur told Business Today in May 2015 that, when Louis Vuitton invested, it advised the brand against “pretending to be European”.

Worth knowing

No investor has published a document on the stake, and no filing seen gives today’s shareholders, so this page treats LVMH’s 2007 investment as history. A minority stake is not control; we tag Hidesign Independent on that basis.

The 2007 announcement came before the company existed; which entity took the stake is not established.

Who makes Hidesign bags

Hidesign’s own product pages name the maker. The Count 02 briefcase, the Moon 04 tote and the Opera 01 tote, read on 22 September 2026, each say “Manufacturer: Hidesign India Pvt. Ltd., 244/1, Odhiampet, Villianur, Puducherry” and “Country of Origin: India”. The Opera 01 page also prints a month and year of manufacture.

A Madras High Court order of 20 January 2015 directed police protection for “the Petitioner’s Units I, II and III” and the company’s shops in Puducherry. The petition, as the order records it, said 90% of the workforce were women. The brand’s About page describes the same work in its own words: “At our atelier, craftswomen work in groups to construct a bag”.

The Myntra declarations agree. We read 40 Hidesign product records on 22 September 2026 — the block the Legal Metrology rules require, naming the country of origin and the company answerable for the goods. India was the country of origin on all 40, and Hidesign India Pvt Ltd was the manufacturer on all 40, at St Martin Street, Sedarapet Road and Thondamanatham Village addresses. Goods made in India pay no import duty, so duty plays no part in a Hidesign price.

The origin wording and the declarations say the same thing. The name is English, “hide” plus “design”, no foreign design city is claimed, and every label read says India.

Who is selling Hidesign on Myntra

On the same 40 records, two names appeared as seller of record.

What Hidesign costs in India

On its own site Hidesign sells at the printed price. The three bags read on 22 September 2026 all charged the full MRP, each marked “Inclusive of all taxes”.

Count 02 Green Leather Briefcase₹16,995₹16,995

Opera 01 Black Leather Tote Bag₹12,995₹12,995

Myntra reads differently. We sampled 100 distinct Hidesign listings there on 22 September 2026, from a brand listing of 1,965 products. The median MRP was ₹5,945 and the median price paid ₹2,957, which is 49.7% of MRP. Ninety-three of the hundred were reduced, across 41 distinct MRPs. Wallets and handbags made up 42 listings each, with belts and laptop bags at eight each.

The two readings cover different products, so they are not a like-for-like comparison: the Myntra median includes a great many wallets, and the own-site bags are large leather pieces. Da Milano, another Indian leather brand read that day, sold at 72.7% of MRP on the same measure.

The price band here is Mid-range, computed from the ₹2,957 median paid on Myntra, where wallets and handbags — Hidesign’s core line — make up most of the shelf. The three full-price bags on the brand’s own site sit higher, between ₹12,995 and ₹16,995.

There is no home market abroad to compare against. A US store trading as hidesignusa.com lists different styles in dollars, such as a Toledo messenger bag at $98.00. Its terms name “HIDESIGN” at a Pondicherry address. Because the ranges differ, no price gap is worked out here.

Full grain, vegetable tanned: what the claims rest on

Hidesign sells on its leather. The About page, read on 22 September 2026, says: “Hidesign uses only 100% full grain, top quality leathers”. It says the brand “revived the slow, labour intensive method of vegetable tanning” when other tanneries moved to chrome, “using natural seeds and barks native to South India”. The sustainability page speaks of “vegetable tanned leathers, solid brass fittings”.

All 40 Myntra declarations read named Hidesign India as manufacturer and India as the country of origin.

hidesign.com About, sustainability and blog pages, read 22 September 2026.

The product pages vary. The Count 02 briefcase says “Handcrafted in real vegetable tanned leather” and “Natural and full-grain leather”. The Moon 04 tote says “vegetable tanned leather, handcrafted slowly with natural seeds and barks”. The Opera 01 tote says “Hidesign Mongolia Leather” with a “natural grain print”, and gives no tannage at all. The US store’s About page puts the scope differently again: “many of which are purely vegetable-tanned”.

The pages read do not name a tannery or publish a certification for the leather or tanning claims.

The warranty and returns, as published

Hidesign describes its warranty on several pages. The sustainability page says: “With a lifetime warranty, customers can have their products repaired”. The Count 02 and Opera 01 product pages say: “Free repairs covered under the 1 Year warranty period (for manufacturing defects only), with lifetime service support available thereafter”.

The FAQ sets out the policy in terms. It covers manufacturing defects only: one year for bags and jackets, six months for small leather goods and three months for shoes. After that, “damages or repairs of any kind will be chargeable”. Repairs take three to six weeks plus shipping, and warranty and returns apply only to products bought in India.

The return window is also stated in more than one place. The product pages say “15 days free return”. The refund policy says “We have a 7-day return policy”, and the FAQ says “up to 7 days from the date of delivery”, with a mandatory unboxing video. A buyer should keep a copy of the terms shown at the time of purchase. Buyers comparing this with other Indian bag makers can read our audits of VIP Industries, Safari and Skybags.

Authenticity and the record

The hidesign.com terms, FAQ and store locator, read on 22 September 2026, publish no way to check a specific bag — no code, hologram, QR or verification page — and no list of authorised online or multi-brand sellers. For a Hidesign buyer, the practical check is the manufacturer line on the box, which named Hidesign India on all 40 Myntra records read.

The tax matters read were decided in the company’s favour, though not all on the merits. An Income Tax Appellate Tribunal order for assessment year 2013-14 dismissed the Revenue’s appeal and upheld the deletion of two additions. The Madras High Court dismissed Revenue appeals on 22 October 2018 and 7 January 2021 because the tax at stake was below the threshold for appeal; the 2021 order left the questions of law open, so neither is a ruling on the merits.

Who Hidesign is actually for

Hidesign suits a buyer who wants a leather bag made in India by the company that owns the brand, with the maker’s name and address on every label read. A buyer who wants independent certification of the vegetable tanning will not find one published on the pages read.

Anyone weighing it against older Indian names such as Bata or Wildcraft is buying from a founder-run private company with a single maker on the box. On Myntra, where most listings read were sold by Truecom Retail, the median piece sold at half its MRP; on the brand’s own site the bags read sold at full MRP.

The FA take

Hidesign is one of the more answerable names on the Indian bag shelf. Its own company made all 40 pieces read on Myntra, its own labels carry a Puducherry factory address, and the brand’s origin wording matches its declarations. On Myntra the median piece sold for ₹2,957, about half its MRP, which makes it a Mid-range buy there.

What it publishes about its leather is descriptive rather than certified: the full-grain and vegetable-tanning wording names no tannery or certifier, and the Opera 01 page gives no tannage. Warranty wording runs from a “lifetime warranty” on the sustainability page to one year on bags in the FAQ, and both 15-day and 7-day return windows appear, so check the terms that apply to your purchase.
